In this work, a study of the magnetic behavior of the spinel ZnFe2O4 is presented by using the Monte Carlo simulations (MCS). The iron atoms provide the magnetism in this material. In fact, the magnetic spin of moment of the Fe3+ ions is S=5/2. In this context, we propose a Hamiltonian describing and modeling this compound. Firstly, at zero temperature we have studied the ground state phase diagrams of the system in order to find the more stable configurations. On the other hand, for a non-null temperature values, we obtained the results of the Monte Carlo simulations, namely: the magnetizations and the susceptibilities as a function of temperature. The behavior of those physical parameters shows an anti-ferromagnetic behavior with a Neel-temperature of about TN=12 K. This value is found to be in good agreement with the literature. Moreover, the effect of varying the crystal field, the exchange coupling interactions and the external magnetic field is studied and discussed on the behavior of the magnetizations. To complete this study, we presented the magnetic hysteresis loops deducing the antiferromagnetic behavior of the ZnFe2O4 compound.
The non-equilibrium cation site occupancy in nanosized zinc ferrites (6-13 nm) with different degree of inversion (0.2 to 0.4) was investigated using Fe and Zn K-edge x-ray absorption spectroscopy XANES and EXAFS, and magnetic measurements. The very good agreement between experimental and ab-initio calculations on the Zn K-edge XANES region clearly show the large Zn2+(A)--Zn2+[B] transference that takes place in addition to the well-identified Fe3+[B]--Fe3+(A) one, without altering the long-range structural order. XANES spectra features as a function of the spinel inversion were shown to depen…
Magnetic materials with the spinel structure (A$^{2+}$B$^{3+}_2$O$^4$) form the core of numerous magnetic devices, but ZnFe$_2$O$_4$ constitutes a peculiar example where the nature of the magnetism is still unresolved. Susceptibility measurements revealed a cusp around $T_c=13\;\mathrm{K}$ resembling an antiferromagnetic transition, despite the positive Curie-Weiss temperature determined to be $Θ_{CW}=102.8(1)\;\mathrm{K}$. Bifurcation of field-cooled and zero-field-cooled data below $T_c$ in conjunction with a frequency dependence of the peak position and a non-zero imaginary component below …
We present a systematic study of the magnetic properties of semiconducting ZnFe$_2$O$_4$ thin films fabricated by pulsed laser deposition at low and high oxygen partial pressure and annealed in oxygen and argon atmosphere, respectively. The magnetic response is enhanced by annealing the films at 250$^{\circ}$C and diminished at annealing temperatures above 300$^{\circ}$C. The initial increase is attributed to the formation of oxygen vacancies after argon treatment, evident by the increase in the low energy absorption at $\sim$ 0.9 eV involving Fe$^{2+}$ cations. The weakened magnetic response …
Pure ultrafine ZnFe2O4 particles have been obtained from mechanosynthesis of the ZnO and Fe2O3 oxides. The average grain diameter was estimated from x-ray diffraction to be <d> = 36(6) nm. Refinement of neutron diffraction (ND) data showed that the resulting cubic spinel structure is oxygen-deficient, with ~7% of Fe3+ ions occupying the tetrahedral A sites. Magnetization curves taken at 4.2 K showed absence of saturation up to fields H = 9 Tesla, associated to a spin-canted produced by the milling process. Field-cooled (FC) and zero-field-cooled (ZFC) curves showed irreversible behavior extend…
We present a Density Functional Theory (DFT) based study of the structural and magnetic properties of the (001) surface of the semiconducting oxide ZnFe2O4 (spinel structure). The calculations were performed using the DFT based ab initio plane wave and pseudopotential method as implemented in the Quantum Espresso code. The all electron Full-potential linearized-augmented-plane-wave method (FP-LAPW) was also employed to check the accuracy of plane wave method. In both calculations the DFT+U methodology was employed and different (001) surface terminations of ZnFe2O4 were studied: We find that t…
Ultrasound velocity measurements were performed on a single crystal of spin-frustrated ferrite spinel ZnFe$_2$O$_4$ from 300 K down to 2 K. In this cubic crystal, all the symmetrically-independent elastic moduli exhibit softening with a characteristic minimum with decreasing temperature below $\sim$100 K. This elastic anomaly suggests a coupling between dynamical lattice deformations and molecular-spin excitations. In contrast, the elastic anomalies, normally driven by the magnetostructural phase transition and its precursor, are absent in ZnFe$_2$O$_4$, suggesting that the spin-lattice coupli…
Co$_3$O$_4$, ZnFe$_2$O$_4$, CoFe$_2$O$_4$, ZnCo$_2$O$_4$, and Fe$_3$O$_4$ thin films were fabricated by pulsed laser deposition at high and low temperatures resulting in crystalline single-phase normal, inverse, as well as disordered spinel oxide thin films with smooth surface morphology. The dielectric function, determined by spectroscopic ellipsometry in a wide spectral range from 0.5 eV to 8.5 eV, is compared with the magneto-optical response of the dielectric tensor, investigated by magneto-optical Kerr effect (MOKE) spectroscopy in the spectral range from 1.7 eV to 5.5 eV with an applied …
The structural and magnetic properties of ZnFe2O4 nanoparticles embedded in a non-magnetic ZnO matrix are presented. X-ray diffractograms and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) images showed that the resulting samples are composed of crystalline ferrite nanoparticles with average crystallite size <D> = 23.4(0.9) nm, uniformly dispersed within the ZnO matrix. Magnetization data indicated a superparamagnetic-like behavior from room temperature down to T_{M} ~ 20 K, where a transition to a frozen state is observed. The M(H) curves displayed nearly zero coercive field down to TM, where a sharp…
A thorough consideration of the relation between the lattice parameters of 185 binary and ternary spinel compounds, on one side, and ionic radii and electronegativities of the constituting ions, on the other side, allowed for establishing a simple empirical model and finding its linear equation, which links together the above-mentioned quantities. The derived equation gives good agreement between the experimental and modeled values of the lattice parameters in the considered group of spinels, with an average relative error of about 1% only. The proposed model was improved further by separate c…
Diamond-structure materials have been extensively studied for decades, which form the foundation for most semiconductors and their modern day electronic devices. Here, we discover a e$_g$-orbital ($d_{z^2}$,$d_{x^2-y^2}$ ) model within the diamond lattice (e$_g$-diamond model) that hosts novel topological states. Specifically, the e$_g$-diamond model yields a 3D nodal cage (3D-NC), which is characterized by a $d$-$d$ band inversion protected by two types of degenerate states (i.e., e$_g$-orbital and diamond-sublattice degeneracies). We demonstrate materials realization of this model in the wel…
Neutron and X-ray diffraction, magnetic susceptibility, and specific heat measurements have been used to investigate the magnetic and structural phase transitions of the spinel system Fe1+xCr2-xO4(0.0<=x<=1.0). The temperature versus Fe concentration (x) phase diagram features two magnetically ordered states and four structural states below 420 K. The complexity of the phase diagram is closely related to the change in the spin and orbital degrees of freedom induced by substitution of Fe ions for Cr ions. The systematic change in the crystal structure is explained by the combined effects of Jah…
Spinel structured compounds, $AB_2O_4$, are special because of their exotic multiferroic properties. In $ACr_2O_4$ ($A$=$Co$, $Mn$,$Fe$), a switchable polarization has been observed experimentally due to a non-collinear magnetic spin order. In this article, we demonstrated the microscopic origin behind such magnetic spin order, hysteresis, polarisation and the so-called magnetic compensation effect in $ACr_2O_4$ ($A$=$Co$, $Mn$,$Fe$, $Ni$) using Monte Carlo simulation. With a careful choice of the exchange interaction, we were able to explain various experimental findings such as magnetization…
Insights into the structural, electronic and optical properties of X$_2$MgZ$_4$($X=$ Sc, Y; $Z=$ S, Se) spinel compounds: Materials for the future optoelectronic applications
Based on density functional calculation with LDA+U method, we propose that hypothetical Osmium compounds such as CaOs2O4 and SrOs2O4 can be stabilized in the geometrically frustrated spinel crystal structure. They also show some exotic electronic and magnetic properties in a reasonable range of on-site Coulomb correlation U such as ferromagnetism and orbital magnetoelectric effect characteristic to Axion electrodynamics. Other electronic phases including 3D Dirac metal and Mott insulator exist and would make perspective 5d spinels ideal for applications.
The Jahn-Teller effect refers to the symmetry-lowering geometrical distortion in a crystal (or non-linear molecule) due to the presence of a degenerate electronic state. Usually, the Jahn-Teller distortion is not polar. Recently, GaV4S8 with the lacunar spinel structure was found to undergoes a Jahn-Teller distortion from cubic to ferroelectric rhombohedral structure at TJT = 38K. In this work, we carry out a general group theory analysis to show how and when the Jahn-Teller effect gives rise to ferroelectricity. On the basis of this theory, we find that the ferroelectric Jahn-Teller distort i…
We present the magnetic properties of complete solid solutions of ZnCr$_2$O$_4$ and CoCr$_2$O$_4$: two well-studied oxide spinels with very different magnetic ground states. ZnCr$_2$O$_4$, with non-magnetic $d^{10}$ cations occupying the A site and magnetic $d^3$ cations on the B site, is a highly frustrated antiferromagnet. CoCr$_2$O$_4$, with magnetic $d^7$ cations (three unpaired electrons) on the A site as well, exhibits both Néel ferrimagnetism as well as commensurate and incommensurate non-collinear magnetic order. More recently, CoCr$_2$O$_4$ has been studied extensively for its polar b…
We study the magnetically-induced phonon splitting in cubic ACr$_2$O$_4$ (A=Mg, Zn, Cd, Hg) spinels from first principles, and demonstrate that the sign of the splitting, which is experimentally observed to be opposite in CdCr$_2$O$_4$ compared to ZnCr$_2$O$_4$ and MgCr$_2$O$_4$, is determined solely by the particular magnetic ordering pattern observed in these compounds. We further show that this interaction between magnetism and phonon frequencies can be fully described by the previously proposed spin-phonon coupling model that includes only the nearest neighbor exchange. Finally, using this…
Structural, electronic, and magnetic properties of modified cubic spinel compound LiNi$_{0.5}$Mn$_{1.5}$O$_{4}$ are studied via x-ray diffraction, resistivity, DC and AC magnetization, heat capacity, neutron diffraction, $^7$Li nuclear magnetic resonance, magnetocaloric effect, magnetic relaxation, and magnetic memory effect experiments. We stabilized this compound in a cubic structure with space group $P4_{3}32$. It exhibits semiconducting character with an electronic band gap of $Δ/k_{\rm B} \simeq 0.4$ eV. The interaction within each Mn$^{4+}$ and Ni$^{2+}$ sub-lattice and between Mn$^{4+}$…
We apply the self-interaction corrected local spin density %(SIC-LSD) approximation to study the electronic structure and magnetic properties of the spinel ferrites MnFe$_{2}$O$_{4}$, Fe$_{3}$O$_{4}$, CoFe$_{2}$O$_{4}$, and NiFe$_{2}$O$_{4}$. We concentrate on establishing the nominal valence of the transition metal elements and the ground state structure, based on the study of various valence scenarios for both the inverse and normal spinel structures for all the systems. For both structures we find all the studied compounds to be insulating, but with smaller gaps in the normal spinel scenari…
We performed small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) measurements on the helimagnetic spinel compound ZnCr2Se4. The ground state of this material is a multi-domain spin-spiral phase, which undergoes domain selection in a magnetic field and reportedly exhibits a transition to a proposed spin-nematic phase at higher fields. We observed a continuous change in the magnetic structure as a function of field and temperature, as well as a weak discontinuous jump in the spiral pitch across the domain-selection transition upon increasing field. From our SANS results we have established the absence of any …
We show that the magnetic anisotropy in spinel-structure CoCr$_2$O$_4$ thin films exhibits a strain dependence in which compressive strain induces an out-of-plane magnetic easy axis and tensile strain an in-plane easy axis, exactly opposite to the behavior reported for the related compound CoFe$_2$O$_4$. We use density functional theory calculations within the LSDA+U approximation to reproduce and explain the observed behavior. Using second-order perturbation theory, we analyse the anisotropy tensor of the Co$^{2+}$ ions in both octahedral and tetrahedral coordination, allowing us to extend ou…
We have investigated the group 14 nitrides (M$_3$N$_4$) in the spinel phase ($γ$-M$_3$N$_4$ with M= C, Si, Ge and Sn) and $β$ phase ($β$-M$_3$N$_4$ with M= Si, Ge and Sn) using density functional theory with the local density approximation and the GW approximation. The Kohn-Sham energies of these systems have been first calculated within the framework of full-potential linearized augmented plane waves and then corrected using single-shot G$_0$W$_0$ calculations, which we have implemented in the modified version of the Elk full-potential LAPW code. Direct band gaps at the $Γ$ point have been fo…
Spinel compound, MgV$_2$O$_4$, known as a highly frustrated magnet has been extensively studied both experimentally and theoretically for its exotic quantum magnetic states. However, due to its intrinsic insulating nature in its antiferromagnetic (AFM) ground state, its realistic applications in spintronics are quite limited. Here, based on first-principles calculations, we examine the ferromagnetic (FM) phase of MgV$_2$O$_4$, which was found to host three-dimensional flat band (FB) right near the Fermi level, consequently yielding a large anomalous Hall effect (AHE, $σ\approx 670\,Ω^{-1}\cdot…
We examine the evolution of magnetic properties in the normal spinel oxides Mg(1-x)Cu(x)Cr2O4 using magnetization and heat capacity measurements. The end-member compounds of the solid solution series have been studied in some detail because of their very interesting magnetic behavior. MgCr2O4 is a highly frustrated system that undergoes a first order structural transition at its antiferromagnetic ordering temperature. CuCr2O4 is tetragonal at room temperature as a result of Jahn-Teller active tetrahedral Cu^2+ and undergoes a magnetic transition at 135 K. Substitution of magnetic cations for d…
We report on the electronic and optical properties of two theoretically predicted stable spinel compounds of the form ZnB2O4, where B = Ni or Cu; neither compound has been previously synthesized, so we compare them to the previously studied p-type ZnCo2O4 spinel. These new materials exhibit spin polarization that is ideal for spintronics applications, and broad conductivity maxima near the valence band edge that facilitate p-type dopability. We show that 3d electrons on the octahedrally coordinated Zn atom fall deep within the valence band and do not contribute significantly to the electronic …
Dynamical properties of the lattice structure was studied by optical spectroscopy in ACr2O4 chromium spinel oxide magnetic semiconductors over a broad temperature region of T=10-335K. The systematic change of the A-site ions (A=Mn, Fe, Co, Ni and Cu) showed that the occupancy of 3d orbitals on the A-site, has strong impact on the lattice dynamics. For compounds with orbital degeneracy (FeCr2O4, NiCr2O4 and CuCr2O4), clear splitting of infrared-active phonon modes and/or activation of silent vibrational modes have been observed upon the Jahn-Teller transition and at the onset of the subsequent …
A structural phase transition from cubic $Fd\bar{3}m$ to tetragonal $I$4$_1$/$amd$ symmetry with $c/a >$ 1 is observed at $T_{\rm{S}}$ = 16 K in spinel GeCo$_2$O$_4$ below the Néel temperature $T_N$ = 21 K. Structural and magnetic ordering appear to be decoupled with the structural distortion occurring at 16 K while magnetic order occurs at 21 K as determined by magnetic susceptibility and heat capacity measurements. An elongation of CoO$_6$ octahedra is observed in the tetragonal phase of GeCo$_2$O$_4$. We present the complete crystallographic description of GeCo$_2$O$_4$ in the tetragonal $I…
We report pressure-dependent reflection and transmission measurements on ZnCr$_2$Se$_4$, HgCr$_2$S$_4$, and CdCr$_2$O$_4$ single crystals at room temperature over a broad spectral range 200-24000 cm$^{-1}$. The pressure dependence of the phonon modes and the high-frequency electronic excitations indicates that all three compounds undergo a pressure-induced structural phase transition with the critical pressure 15 GPa, 12 GPa, and 10 GPa for CdCr$_2$O$_4$, HgCr$_2$S$_4$, and ZnCr$_2$Se$_4$, respectively. The eigenfrequencies of the electronic transitions are very close to the expected values fo…
The spinel cobalt oxide Co3O4 is a magnetic semiconductor containing cobalt ions in Co2+ and Co3+ oxidation states. We have studied the electronic, magnetic and bonding properties of Co3O4 using density functional theory (DFT) at the Generalized Gradient Approximation (GGA), GGA+U, and PBE0 hybrid functional levels. The GGA correctly predicts Co3O4 to be a semiconductor, but severely underestimates the band gap. The GGA+U band gap (1.96 eV) agrees well with the available experimental value (~ 1.6 eV), whereas the band gap obtained using the PBE0 hybrid functional (3.42 eV) is strongly overesti…
We examine the effect of small amounts of magnetic substituents in the $A$ sites of the frustrated spinels MgCr$_2$O$_4$ and ZnCr$_2$O$_4$. Specifically we look for the effects of spin and lattice disorder on structural changes accompanying magnetic ordering in these compounds. Substitution of Co$^{2+}$ on the non-magnetic Zn$^{2+}$ site in Zn$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$Cr$_2$O$_4$ where 0\,$<$\,$x$\,$\leq$\,0.2 completely suppresses the spin-Jahn-Teller distortion of ZnCr$_2$O$_4$ although these systems remain frustrated, and magnetic ordering occurs at very low temperatures of $T$\,$<$\,20\,K. On the ot…
The symmetry of local moments plays a defining role in the nature of exotic grounds states stabilized in frustrated magnetic materials. We present inelastic neutron scattering (INS) measurements of the crystal electric field (CEF) excitations in the family of compounds MgRE$_2$Se$_4$ (RE $\in$ $\{$Ho, Tm, Er and Yb$\}$). These compounds form in the spinel structure, with the rare earth ions comprising a highly frustrated pyrochlore sublattice. Within the symmetry constraints of this lattice, we fit both the energies and intensities of observed modes in the INS spectra to determine the most lik…
The interplay between covalency and magnetism is non-trivial and can be harnessed for designing new functional magnetic materials. Based on a survey using density functional calculations, we show that $TM\unicode{x2013}O$ bond covalency can increase the total magnetic moment of spinel compounds of $TMFe_2O_4$ composition ($TM = V-Ni, Nb-Pd$) which are isomorphic to the much-researched magnetite. Accordingly, $PdFe_2O_4$ was found to exhibit the highest magnetic moment of 7.809 $μ_B$ per formula unit which is approximately twice that of $Fe_3O_4$ with $T_c$ predicted to be well above ambient. W…
This paper presents the results of simulations of the magnetization field {\it ac} response (at $2$ to $12$ GHz) of various submicron ferrite particles (cylindrical dots). The ferrites in the present simulations have the spinel structure, expressed here by M$_{1-n}$Zn$_{n}$Fe$_2$O$_4$ (where M stands for a divalent metal), and the parameters chosen were the following: (a) for $n=0$: M = \{ Fe, Mn, Co, Ni, Mg, Cu \}; (b) for $n=0.1$: M = \{ Fe, Mg \} (mixed ferrites). These runs represent full 3D micromagnetic (one-particle) ferrite simulations. We find evidences of confined spin waves in all s…
CdIn2S4 thiospinel was studied by means of the first principles calculations in both generalized gradient and local density approximations (GGA and LDA). The structural, electronic, optical and elastic properties were calculated in the pressure range from 0 to 10 GPa, below the pressure of phase transition for this compound. One of the main results of the paper is that the previously encountered in the literature controversy regarding the character of the CdIn2S4 band gap was resolved in favor of the indirect gap. Pressure coefficient of the band gap estimated as 0.071/0.063 eV/GPa (GGA/LDA) i…
We report structural, susceptibility and specific heat studies of stoichiometric and off-stoichiometric poly- and single crystals of the A-site spinel compound FeSc2S4. In stoichiometric samples no long-range magnetic order is found down to 1.8 K. The magnetic susceptibility of these samples is field independent in the temperature range 10 - 400 K and does not show irreversible effects at low temperatures. In contrast, the magnetic susceptibility of samples with iron excess shows substantial field dependence at high temperatures and manifests a pronounced magnetic irreversibility at low temper…
The structural, elastic, electronic, Vickers-Hardness, vibrational, Optical and thermodynamical properties of potentially technologically significant superconductors CuRh2S4 and CuRh2Se4 have calculated using density functional theory (DFT) with CASTEP code. The calculated lattice parameters and other properties have compared with available experimental values and found good agreement with them. The valence band and conduction bands overlapped each other at the Fermi level indicates the metallic conductivity of CuRh2S4 and CuRh2Se4. The density of states shows that S-3p and Se-4p states are more…
A detailed investigation of the series CuCr(1-x)MgxO2 (x = 0.0 - 0.05) has been performed by making high-temperature resistivity and thermopower measurements, and by performing a theoretical analysis of the latter. Microstructure characterization has been carried out as well. Upon Mg2+ for Cr3+ substitution, a concomitant decrease in the electrical resistivity and thermopower values is found, up to x ~ 0.02 - 0.03, indicating a low solubility limit of Mg in the structure. This result is corroborated by scanning electron microscopy observations, showing the presence of MgCr2O4 spinels as soon a…

At room temperature, the normal oxide spinels NiCr_2O_4 and CuCr_2O_4 are tetragonally distorted and crystallize in the I4_1/amd space group due to cooperative Jahn-Teller ordering driven by the orbital degeneracy of tetrahedral Ni$^{2+}$ ($t_2^4$) and Cu$^{2+}$ ($t_2^5$). Upon cooling, these compounds undergo magnetic ordering transitions; interactions being somewhat frustrated for NiCr_2O_4 but not for CuCr_2O_4. We employ variable-temperature high-resolution synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction to establish that at the magnetic ordering temperatures there are further structural changes, whi…
High-performance thermoelectric oxides could offer a great energy solution for integrated and embedded applications in sensing and electronics industries. Oxides, however, often suffer from low Seebeck coefficient when compared with other classes of thermoelectric materials. In search of high-performance thermoelectric oxides, we present a comprehensive density functional investigation, based on GGA$+U$ formalism, surveying the 3d and 4d transition-metal-containing ferrites of the spinel structure. Consequently, we predict MnFe$_2$O$_4$ and RhFe$_2$O$_4$ have Seebeck coefficients of $\sim \pm …

We synthesize a new titanium-oxide compound AlTi2O5 with pseudobrookite-type structure. The formal valence of Ti is 3.5+ that is the same as the Magneli compound Ti4O7 and the spinel compound LiTi2O4. AlTi2O5 exhibits insulating behavior in resistivity. Using experimentally determined crystal structure, we perform the first-principles calculations for the electronic structures. Experimentally suggested random distribution of Al and Ti is not the origin of the insulating behavior. The Fermi surfaces for nonrandom AlTi2O5 show cylindrical shapes reflecting a layered structure, which indicates a …
Crystal structure, magnetic susceptibility, and specific heat were measured in the normal cubic spinel compounds MnSc_2S_4 and FeSc_2S_4. Down to the lowest temperatures, both compounds remain cubic and reveal strong magnetic frustration. Specifically the Fe compound is characterized by a Curie-Weiss temperature Θ_{CW}= -45 K and does not show any indications of order down to 50 mK. In addition, the Jahn-Teller ion Fe^{2+} is orbitally frustrated. Hence, FeSc_2S_4 belongs to the rare class of spin-orbital liquids. MnSc_2S_4 is a spin liquid for temperatures T > T_N \approx 2 K.
We report resistivity, thermopower and magnetic susceptibility measurements on the Nb$_4$-cluster compounds Ga$_{1.33}$Nb$_4$X$_{8}$ (X = S, Se), derived from vacancy ordered spinels A$_x$T$_4$X$_8$. The cubic selenide phase is insulating and its resistivity crosses over from $\lnρ \sim T^{-1}$ to $\sim T^{-1/2}$ on cooling below 150 K, indicating variable range hopping (VRH) conduction at low temperatures. This is similar to that previously reported for V$_4$ and Mo$_4$ cluster compounds. The rhombohedrally distorted sulfide is metallic and shows a minimum in resistance at $\sim $ 56 K below …
Experiments of various types on the metallic transition metal oxide compound LiV_{2}O_{4} with the fcc normal-spinel structure are reviewed. The low-temperature T < 10 K data consistently indicate heavy fermion (HF) behaviors characteristic of those of the heaviest-mass f-electron HF compounds. A crossover is observed above about 50 K in the magnetic susceptibility, ^{7}Li spin-lattice relaxation rate and neutron magnetic scattering function to a magnetic state variously described as an antiferromagnetically-coupled local-moment metal or, at the opposite extreme, as an itinerant nearly-ferroma…
Spin freezing in the $A$-site spinel FeAl$_2$O$_4$ which is a spin liquid candidate is studied using remnant magnetization and nonlinear magnetic susceptibility and isofield cooling and heating protocols. The remnant magnetization behavior of FeAl$_2$O$_4$ differs significantly from that of a canonical spin glass which is also supported by analysis of the nonlinear magnetic susceptibility term $χ_3 (T)$. Through the power-law analysis of $χ_3 (T)$, a spin-freezing temperature, $T_g$ = 11.4$\pm$0.9~K and critical exponent, $γ$ = 1.48$\pm$0.59 are obtained. Cole-Cole analysis of magnetic suscept…
The spinel oxides LiGaCr4O8 and LiInCr4O8 contain size-alternating pyrochlore lattices of spin-3/2 Cr3+ tetrahedra with different magnitudes of alternation. We show here that the solid solutions LiGa1-xInxCr4O8 between these two 'breathing' pyrochlore compounds display (i) rapid suppression of magnetic and structural transitions upon doping the end members, (ii) spin-glass-like freezing above 2 K in the range 0.1 $\lesssim$ x $\lesssim$ 0.6, and (iii) apparent spin-gap behavior for x $\gtrsim$ 0.7. Furthermore, no transitions are observed above 2 K at x ~ 0.9, where magnetic susceptibility rem…
The sulfur based Cr-spinels RCr2S4 with R = Cd and Hg exhibit the coexistence of ferromagnetic and ferroelectric properties together with a pronounced magnetocapacitive coupling. While in CdCr2S4 purely ferromagnetic order is established, in HgCr2S4 a bond-frustrated magnetic ground state is realized, which, however, easily can be driven towards a ferromagnetic configuration in weak magnetic fields. This paper shall review our recent investigation for both compounds. Besides the characterization of the magnetic properties, the complex dielectric permittivity was studied by means of broadband d…
LiV$_2$O$_4$ is a mixed-valent spinel oxide and one of a few transition-metal compounds to host a heavy fermion phase at low temperatures. While numerous experimental studies have attempted to elucidate how its 3$d$ electrons undergo giant mass renormalization, spectroscopic probes that may provide crucial hints, such as scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), remain to be applied. A prerequisite is atomically flat and pristine surfaces, which, in the case of LiV$_2$O$_4$, are difficult to obtain by cleavage of small, three-dimensional crystals. We report the epitaxial growth of LiV$_2$O$_4$ thin…
The current status and prospects of research on ferromagnetism in semiconductors are reviewed. The question of the origin of ferromagnetism in europium chalcogenides, chromium spinels and, particularly, in diluted magnetic semiconductors is addressed. The nature of electronic states derived from 3d of magnetic impurities is discussed in some details. Results of a quantitative comparison between experimental and theoretical results, notably for Mn-based III-V and II-VI compounds, are presented. This comparison demonstrates that the current theory of the exchange interactions mediated by holes i…
We report on a systematic optical investigation of wüstite. In addition, the sample under consideration, Fe0.93O, has been characterized in detail by electrical transport, dielectric, magnetic and thermodynamic measurements. From infrared reflectivity experiments, phonon properties, Drude-like conductivity contributions and electronic transitions have been systematically investigated. The phonon modes reveal a clear splitting below the antiferromagnetic ordering temperature, similar to observations in other transition-metal monoxides and in spinel compounds which have been explained in terms o…
