High-performance thermoelectric oxides could offer a great energy solution for integrated and embedded applications in sensing and electronics industries. Oxides, however, often suffer from low Seebeck coefficient when compared with other classes of thermoelectric materials. In search of high-performance thermoelectric oxides, we present a comprehensive density functional investigation, based on GGA$+U$ formalism, surveying the 3d and 4d transition-metal-containing ferrites of the spinel structure. Consequently, we predict MnFe$_2$O$_4$ and RhFe$_2$O$_4$ have Seebeck coefficients of $\sim \pm 600$ $μ$V K$^{-1}$ at near room temperature, achieved by light hole and electron doping. Furthermore, CrFe$_2$O$_4$ and MoFe$_2$O$_4$ have even higher ambient Seebeck coefficients at $\sim \pm 700$ $μ$V K$^{-1}$. In the latter compounds, the Seebeck coefficient is approximately a flat function of temperature up to $\sim 700$ K, offering a tremendous operational convenience. Additionally, MoFe$_2$O$_4$ doped with $10^{19}$ holes/cm$^3$ has a calculated thermoelectric power factor of $689.81$ $μ$W K$^{-2}$ m$^{-1}$ at $300$ K, and $455.67$ $μ$W K$^{-2}$ m$^{-1}$ at $600$ K. The thermoelectric properties predicted here can bring these thermoelectric oxides to applications at lower temperatures traditionally fulfilled by more toxic and otherwise burdensome materials.
I review the microscopic spin-orbital Hamiltonian and ground state properties of spin one-half spinel oxides with threefold $t_{2g}$ orbital degeneracy. It is shown that for any orbital configuration a ground state of corresponding spin only Hamiltonian is infinitely degenerate in the classical limit. The extensive classical degeneracy is lifted by the quantum nature of the spins, an effect similar to order-out-of-disorder phenomenon by quantum fluctuations. This drives the system to a non-magnetic spin-singlet dimer manifold with a residual degeneracy due to relative orientation of dimers. Th…
Single-crystalline thin film of an iridium dioxide polymorph Ir2O4 has been fabricated by the pulsed laser deposition of LixIr2O4 precursor and the subsequent Li-deintercalation using soft chemistry. Ir2O4 crystallizes in a spinel (AB2O4) without A cations in the tetrahedral site, which is isostructural to lambda-MnO2. Ir ions form a pyrochlore sublattice, which is known to give rise to a strong geometrical frustration. This Ir spinel was found to be a narrow gap insulator, in remarkable contrast to the metallic ground state of rutile-type IrO2. We argue that an interplay of strong spin-orbit …
Dynamical properties of the lattice structure was studied by optical spectroscopy in ACr2O4 chromium spinel oxide magnetic semiconductors over a broad temperature region of T=10-335K. The systematic change of the A-site ions (A=Mn, Fe, Co, Ni and Cu) showed that the occupancy of 3d orbitals on the A-site, has strong impact on the lattice dynamics. For compounds with orbital degeneracy (FeCr2O4, NiCr2O4 and CuCr2O4), clear splitting of infrared-active phonon modes and/or activation of silent vibrational modes have been observed upon the Jahn-Teller transition and at the onset of the subsequent …
A unique type of frustrated lattice is found in two A-site ordered spinel oxides, LiGaCr4O8 and LiInCr4O8. Because of the large size mismatch between Li+ and Ga3+/In3+ ions at the A site, the pyrochlore lattice, made up of Cr3+ ions carrying spin 3/2, becomes an alternating array of small and large tetrahedra, i.e., a "breathing" pyrochlore lattice. We introduce a parameter, the breathing factor Bf, which quantifies the degree of frustration in the pyrochlore lattice: Bf is defined as J'/J, where J' and J are nearest-neighbor magnetic interactions in the large and small tetrahedra, respectivel…
Spinel oxides are an ideal setting to explore the interplay between configurational entropy, site selectivity, and magnetism in high entropy oxides. In this work we characterize the magnetic properties of the spinel (Cr,Mn,Fe,Co,Ni)$_3$O$_4$ and study the evolution of its magnetism as a function of non-magnetic gallium substitution. Across the range of compositions studied here, from 0% to 40% Ga, magnetic susceptibility and powder neutron diffraction measurements show that ferrimagnetic order is robust in the spinel HEO. However, we also find that the ferrimagnetic order is highly tunable, wi…
We report a correlation between structural phase stability and magnetic properties of Co2FeO4 spinel oxide. We employed mechanical alloying and subsequent annealing to obtain the desired samples. The particle size of the samples changes from 25 nm to 45 nm. The structural phase separation of samples, except sample annealed at 9000C, into Co rich and Fe rich spinel phase has been examined from XRD spectrum, SEM picture, along with EDAX spectrum, and magnetic measurements. The present study indicated the ferrimagnetic character of Co2FeO4, irrespective of structural phase stability. The observat…
Mg batteries with oxide cathodes have the potential to significantly surpass existing Li-ion technologies in terms of sustainability, abundance, and energy density. However, Mg intercalation at the cathode is often severely hampered by the sluggish kinetics of Mg$^{2+}$ migration within oxides. Here we report a combined theoretical and experimental study addressing routes to identify cathode materials with an improved Mg-ion mobility. Using periodic density functional theory calculations, Mg$^{2+}$ migration in oxide spinels has been studied, revealing key features that influence the activatio…
Through direct nanoparticle nucleation and growth on nitrogen doped, reduced graphene oxide sheets and cation substitution of spinel Co3O4 nanoparticles, a manganese-cobalt spinel MnCo2O4/graphene hybrid was developed as a highly efficient electrocatalyst for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in alkaline conditions. Electrochemical and X-ray near edge structure (XANES) investigations revealed that the nucleation and growth method for forming inorganic-nanocarbon hybrid results in covalent coupling between spinel oxide nanoparticles and N-doped reduced graphene oxide (N-rmGO) sheets. Carbon K-edg…
We have investigated the static and dynamic response of magnetic clusters in Co_{0.2}Zn_{0.8}Fe_{1.6}Ti_{0.4}O_4 spinel oxide, where a sequence of magnetic phase transitions, i.e., paramagnetic (PM) to ferromagnetic at T_{C} $\leq$ 270K and ferromagnetic to canted spin glass state at T_f$ $\leq$ 125K is observed.
The discovery of two-dimensional electron gases (2DEGs) at the heterointerface between two insulating perovskite-type oxides, such as LaAlO3 and SrTiO3, provides opportunities for a new generation of all-oxide electronic and photonic devices. However, significant improvement of the interfacial electron mobility beyond the current value of approximately 1,000 cm2V-1s-1 (at low temperatures), remains a key challenge for fundamental as well as applied research of complex oxides. Here, we present a new type of 2DEG created at the heterointerface between SrTiO3 and a spinel γ-Al2O3 epitaxial film w…
Sintered samples of a spinel oxide LiFeCr4O8, where Cr3+ and Fe3+ ions have localized moments, were found to show a large magnetic-field-induced volume increase approaching 500 ppm by applying a magnetic field of 9 T. This large volume increase appeared only at around 30 K. At 30 K, a spin-reorientation transition from ferrimagnetic to conical order occurs, giving rise to this large volume increase. The coexistence of ferrimagnetic and conical phases at this transition was found to be important, suggesting that such a large magnetic-field-induced volume change can be realized at various magnet…
High-Tc Cu oxides consist of the alternating stack of the superconductive CuO2 layer and the block layer, such as Bi2Sr2O4 or La2-xSrxO2. By changing the block layer, we can change their physical properties, such as transition temperature Tc. The thermoelectric Co oxides have a similar layered structure composed of the conductive CoO2 layer and the blocking layer. Thus, we propose that their thremoelectric properties can be finely tuned by modifying the block layer.
We report high temperature synchrotron X-ray diffraction (SXRD), dc magnetization and current-voltage (I-V) characteristics for the samples of Co$_{2.75}$Fe$_{0.25}$O$_4$ ferrite. The material was prepared by chemical reaction of the Fe and Co nitrate solutions at pH = 11 and subsequent annealing at temperatures 200 0C, 500 0C and 900 0C. The measurements were performed by cycling the temperature from 300 K to high temperature (warming mode) and return back to 300 K (cooling mode). The SXRD patterns indicated a fine bi-phased cubic spinel structure in the highly Co rich spinel oxide. Magnetiza…
The normal spinel oxide MgCr2O4 is cubic at room temperature while the normal spinel CuCr2O4 is tetragonal as a consequence of the Jahn-Teller nature of Cu2+ on the tetrahedral sites. Despite different end-member structures, complete solid solutions of Mg_{1-x}Cu_xCr2O4 can be prepared that display a first-order structural transition with composition x = 0.43 at room temperature. Reverse Monte Carlo analysis of total neutron scattering on data acquired between 300 K and 15 K on samples with x = 0.10, 0.20, and 0.43 provides unbiased local and average structure descriptions of the samples, incl…
Various physical quantities are measured and analysed for the Cu-substituted thermoelectric oxide NaCo_{2-x}Cu_xO_4. As was previously known, the substituted Cu enhances the thermoelectric power, while it does not increase the resistivity significantly. The susceptibility and the electron specific-heat are substantially decreased with increasing x, which implies that the substituted Cu decreases the effective-mass enhancement. Through a quantitative comparison with the heavy fermion compounds and the valence fluctuation systems, we have found that the Cu substitution effectively increases the …

We report neutron scattering measurements of the spinel oxide LiGaCr$_{4}$O$_{8}$, in which magnetic ions Cr$^{3+}$ form a breathing pyrochlore lattice. Our experiments reveal the coexistence of a nearly dispersionless resonance mode and dispersive spin wave excitations in the magnetically ordered state, which can be quantitatively described by a quantum spin model of hexagonal loops and linear spin wave theory with the same set of exchange parameters, respectively. Comparison to other Cr spinel oxides reveals a linear relationship between the resonance energy and lattice constant across all t…
We prepared the brownmillerite oxide Ca_{2-y}La_yCo_{2-x}Al_xO_5, and found that it was an n-type conductor. The thermopower and the resistivity of the single crystal are -90 microV/K and 68 mOhm cm along the ab direction at 440 K, which suggest relatively good thermoelectrical properties, compared with other transition-metal oxides. Their temperature dependences are of activation type, and the activation energies are 0.2 eV for the resistivity and 0.04 eV for the thermopower. These energies differ by one order in magnitude, which implies that a polaron dominates the charge transport. A sign o…
We prepared polycrystalline samples of NaCo2-xMxO4 substituted for the Co site by other 3d or 4d elements (M=Mn,Cu, Zn, Ru, Rh, and Pd). While some of the elements (M=Mn,Ru and Rh) act as a strong scatterer to give rise to a rapid increase in resistivity, the others (M=Cu, Zn and Pd) do not deteriorate the electric conduction of the host. Most unusually, the Cu substitution significantly enhances the thermopower, which increases the figure of merit by several times at 100 K.

High-temperature Cu-Mn-Fe spinel-oxide nanoparticle solar selective absorber coatings are investigated experimentally and theoretically. A reliable, general approach to evaluate absorption coefficient spectra from the optical measurements of the nanoparticle-pigmented coatings is developed based on solving the inverse problem using four-flux-radiative method. The derived absorption properties of NP materials can be directly applied to predict the solar absorptance, optimize the nanoparticle-pigmented coatings, and analyze the thermal degradation, which agree well with the experimental results.…
The layered cobaltite [Ca$_2$CoO$_3$]$_{0.62}$[CoO$_2$], often expressed as the approximate formula Ca$_3$Co$_4$O$_9$, is a promising candidate for efficient oxide thermoelectrics but an origin of its unusual thermoelectric transport is still in debate. Here we investigate \textit{in-plane} anisotropy of the transport properties in a broad temperature range to examine the detailed conduction mechanism. The in-plane anisotropy between $a$ and $b$ axes is clearly observed both in the resistivity and the thermopower, which is qualitatively understood with a simple band structure of the triangular…
We discuss and present search strategies for finding new thermoelectric compositions based on first principles electronic structure and transport calculations. We illustrate them by application to a search for potential n-type oxide thermoelectric materials. This includes a screen based on visualization of electronic energy isosurfaces. We report compounds that show potential as thermoelectric materials along with detailed properties, including SrTiO3, which is a known thermoelectric, and appropriately doped KNbO3 and rutile TiO2.
The spinel cobalt oxide Co3O4 is a magnetic semiconductor containing cobalt ions in Co2+ and Co3+ oxidation states. We have studied the electronic, magnetic and bonding properties of Co3O4 using density functional theory (DFT) at the Generalized Gradient Approximation (GGA), GGA+U, and PBE0 hybrid functional levels. The GGA correctly predicts Co3O4 to be a semiconductor, but severely underestimates the band gap. The GGA+U band gap (1.96 eV) agrees well with the available experimental value (~ 1.6 eV), whereas the band gap obtained using the PBE0 hybrid functional (3.42 eV) is strongly overesti…
LiTi2O4 is a unique material in that it is the only known oxide spinel superconductor. Although bulk studies have demonstrated that superconductivity can be generally described by the Bardeen-Cooper-Schreiffer theory, the microscopic mechanisms of superconductivity are not yet resolved fully. The sensitivity of the superconducting properties to various defects of the spinel crystal structure provides insight into such mechanisms. Epitaxial films of LiTi2O4 on single crystalline substrates of MgAl2O4, MgO, and SrTiO3 provide model systems to systematically explore the effects of lattice strain …
Epitaxial Fe/magnesium gallium spinel oxide (MgGa2O4)/Fe(001) magnetic tunnel junctions (MTJs) were fabricated by magnetron sputtering. Tunnel magnetoresistance (TMR) ratio up to 121% at room temperature (196% at 4 K) was observed, suggesting a TMR enhancement by the coherent tunneling effect in the MgGa2O4 barrier. The MgGa2O4 layer had a spinel structure and it showed good lattice matching with the Fe layers owing to slight tetragonal lattice distortion of MgGa2O4. Barrier thickness dependence of the tunneling resistance and current-voltage characteristics revealed that the barrier height of…
We report the thermoelectric transport properties in the orbital-ordered Mott insulating phase of Ca$_2$RuO$_4$ close to and far from equilibrium. Near equilibrium conditions where the temperature gradient is only applied to the sample, an insulating but non-monotonic temperature variation of the Seebeck coefficient is observed, which is accounted for in terms of a temperature-induced suppression of the orbital order. In non-equilibrium conditions where we have applied high electrical currents, we find that the Seebeck coefficient is anomalously increased in magnitude with increasing external …
We report the magnetic properties of mechanically milled Co$_{0.2}$Zn$_{0.8}$Fe$_2$O$_4$ spinel oxide. After 24 hours milling of the bulk sample, the XRD spectra show nanostructure with average particle size $\approx$ 20 nm. The as milled sample shows an enhancement in magnetization and ordering temperature compared to the bulk sample. If the as milled sample is annealed at different temperatures for the same duration, recrystallization process occurs and approaches to the bulk structure on increasing the annealing temperatures. The magnetization of the annealed samples first increases and the…

Many positive electrode materials in lithium ion batteries include transition metals which are difficult to describe by electronic structure methods like density functional theory (DFT) due to the presence of multiple oxidation states. A prominent example is the lithium manganese oxide spinel Li$_x$Mn$_2$O$_4$ with $0\leq x\leq2$. While DFT, employing the local hybrid functional PBE0r, provides a reliable description, the need for extended computer simulations of large structural models remains a significant challenge. Here, we close this gap by constructing a DFT-based high-dimensional neural…
High-temperature concentrating solar power (CSP) system is capable of harvesting and storing solar energy as heat towards cost-effective dispatchable solar electricity. Solar selective coating is a critical component to boost its efficiency by maximizing solar absorptance and minimizing thermal emittance losses. However, maintaining a high solar-thermal conversion efficiency >90% for long-term operation at >750 degrees C remains a significant challenge. Herein, we report spray-coated spinel Cu-Mn-Cr oxide nanoparticle-pigmented solar selective coatings on Inconel tube sections maintaining >94%…
We report on the electronic and optical properties of two theoretically predicted stable spinel compounds of the form ZnB2O4, where B = Ni or Cu; neither compound has been previously synthesized, so we compare them to the previously studied p-type ZnCo2O4 spinel. These new materials exhibit spin polarization that is ideal for spintronics applications, and broad conductivity maxima near the valence band edge that facilitate p-type dopability. We show that 3d electrons on the octahedrally coordinated Zn atom fall deep within the valence band and do not contribute significantly to the electronic …
We have evaluated the power factor of transition metal oxides at high temperatures using the Heikes formula and the Ioffe-Regel conductivity. The evaluated power factor is found to be nearly independent of carrier concentration in a wide range of doping, and well explains the experimental data for cobalt oxides. This suggests that the same power factor can be obtained with a thermopower larger than $2k_B/e$, and also suggests a reasonably high value of the dimensionless figure of merit $ZT$. We propose an oxide thermoelectric power generator by using materials having a thermopower larger than …
Co$_3$O$_4$, ZnFe$_2$O$_4$, CoFe$_2$O$_4$, ZnCo$_2$O$_4$, and Fe$_3$O$_4$ thin films were fabricated by pulsed laser deposition at high and low temperatures resulting in crystalline single-phase normal, inverse, as well as disordered spinel oxide thin films with smooth surface morphology. The dielectric function, determined by spectroscopic ellipsometry in a wide spectral range from 0.5 eV to 8.5 eV, is compared with the magneto-optical response of the dielectric tensor, investigated by magneto-optical Kerr effect (MOKE) spectroscopy in the spectral range from 1.7 eV to 5.5 eV with an applied …
We present measurements of electrical resistivity, thermal conductivity and thermopower of polycrystalline Sr-doped LaCoO3 with composition La0.95Sr0.05CoO3. Our data show that the investigated compound exhibits a very respectable room temperature thermoelectric figure of merit value of 0.18. Our results not only show that oxides are promising candidates for thermoelectric cooling applications, but also point towards the need for careful theoretical calculations that will serve as a guide in producing the next generation of thermoelectric materials.
Magnesium oxide and sulfide spinels have recently attracted interest as cathode and electrolyte materials for energy-dense Mg batteries, but their observed electrochemical performance depends strongly on synthesis conditions. Using first principles calculations and percolation theory, we explore the extent to which spinel inversion influences Mg$^{2+}$ ionic mobility in MgMn$_2$O$_4$ as a prototypical cathode, and MgIn$_2$S$_4$ as a potential solid electrolyte. We find that spinel inversion and the resulting changes of the local cation ordering give rise to both increased and decreased Mg$^{2+…

Using first-principles electronic structure calculations, we studied the electronic and thermoelectric properties of SrTiO3 based oxide materials and their nanostructures identifying those nanostructures which possess highly anisotropic electronic bands. We showed recently that highly anisotropic flat-and-dispersive bands can maximize the thermoelectric power factor, and at the same time they can produce low dimensional electronic transport in bulk semiconductors. Although most of the considered nanostructures show such highly anisotropic bands, their predicted thermoelectric performance is no…
We experimentally investigated the magnetic properties of NiCo$_2$O$_4$ epitaxial films known to be conductive oxides with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) at room temperature. Both magneto-torque and magnetization measurements at various temperatures provide clear experimental evidence of the spin reorientation transition at which the MA changes from PMA to easy-cone magnetic anisotropy (ECMA) at a certain temperature ($T_{\rm{SR}}$). ECMA was commonly observed in films grown by pulsed laser deposition and reactive radio frequency magnetron sputtering, although $T_{\mathrm{SR}}$ is dep…
Oxides have many potentially desirable characteristics for thermoelectric applications, including low cost and stability at high temperatures, but thus far there are few known high $zT$ $n$-type oxide thermoelectrics. In this work, we use high-throughput first principles calculations to screen transition metal oxides, nitrides, and sulfides for candidate materials with high power factors and low thermal conductivity. We find a variety of promising materials, and we investigate these materials in detail in order to understand the mechanisms that cause them to have high power factors. These mate…
We perform a comparative study on thermoelectric performance of antiperovskite oxides $Ae_3Tt$O and nitrides $Ae_3Pn$N ($Ae=$ Ca, Sr, Ba; $Tt=$ Ge, Sn, Pb; $Pn=$ As, Sb, Bi) by means of first-principles calculation. As for the oxides with the cubic structure, Ca$_3$GeO with a sizable band gap exhibits high thermoelectric performance at high temperatures, while Ba$_3$PbO with Dirac cones without the gap is favorable at low temperatures. The latter high performance owes to high valley degeneracy including the multiple Dirac cones and the valleys near the $Γ$ and R points. For the nitrides with t…
We have performed both in-plane resistivity, Hall effect and specific heat measurements on the thermoelectric cobalt oxide Ca$_{3}$Co$_{4}$O$_{9}$. Four distinct transport regimes are found as a function of temperature, corresponding to a low temperature insulating one up to $T_{min}\approx $63 K, a strongly correlated Fermi liquid up to $T^*\approx $140 K, with $ρ=ρ_0+AT^2$ and $A\approx 3.63$ $10^{-2} μΩcm/K^{2}$, followed by an incoherent metal with $k_Fl\leq 1$ and a high temperature insulator above T$^{**}\approx $510 K . Specific heat Sommerfeld coefficient $γ= 93$ mJ/(mol.K$^{2}$) confi…
Magnetic insulators are important materials for a range of next generation memory and spintronic applications. Structural constraints in this class of devices generally require a clean heterointerface that allows effective magnetic coupling between the insulating layer and the conducting layer. However, there are relatively few examples of magnetic insulators which can be synthesized with surface qualities that would allow these smooth interfaces and precisely tuned interfacial magnetic exchange coupling which might be applicable at room temperature. In this work, we demonstrate an example of …
In-plane thermal conductivity of the thermoelectric layered cobalt oxides has been measured using the Harman method, in which thermal conductivity is obtained from temperature gradient induced by applied current. We have found that the charge reservoir block (the block other than the CoO$_2$ block) dominates the thermal conduction, where a nano-block integration concept is effective for material design. We have further found that the thermal conductivity shows a small but finite in-plane anisotropy between $a$ and $b$ axes, which can be ascribed to the misfit structure.
We report the thermoelectric properties of polycrystalline samples of Ca3Pb1-xBixO (x = 0, 0.1, 0.2) and Ca3SnO, both crystallizing in a cubic antiperovskite-type structure. The Ca3SnO sample shows metallic resistivity and its thermoelectric power approaches 100 uV K-1 at room temperature, resulting in the thermoelectric power factor of Ca3SnO being larger than that of Ca3Pb1-xBixO. On the basis of Hall and Sommerfeld coefficients, the Ca3SnO sample is found to be a p-type metal with a carrier density of ~1019 cm-3, a mobility of ~80 cm2 V-1 s-1, both comparable to those in degenerated semicon…
Ni incorporation has been studied in a comprehensive range of Zn/Co-based magnetic oxides to elucidate it valence state and lattice incorporation. The resulting structural and magnetic properties are studied in detail. To the one end Ni in incorporated by in-diffusion as well as reactive magnetron co-sputtering in wurtzite ZnO where only the Ni-diffused ZnO exhibits significant conductivity. This is complemented by Ni and Co codoping of ZnO leading. To the other end, the ZnCo$_2$O$_4$ spinel is co-doped with varying amounts of Ni. In the wurtzite oxides Ni is exclusively found on tetrahedral l…
Motivated by recent experiments, we present a comprehensive theoretical study of the geometrically frustrated strongly correlated magnetic insulator Mn$_3$O$_4$ spinel oxide based on a microscopic Hamiltonian involving lattice, spin and orbital degrees of freedom. Possessing the physics of degenerate e$_g$ orbitals, this system shows a strong Jahn-Teller effect at high temperatures. Further, careful attention is paid to the special nature of the superexchange physics arising from the 90$^o$ Mn-O-Mn bonding angle. The Jahn-Teller and superexchange-based orbital-spin Hamiltonians are then analys…
We have prepared polycrystalline samples of (Sr$_{1-x}$La$_x$)$_2$ErRuO$_6$ and (Sr$_{1-x}$La$_x$)$_2$YRuO$_6$, and have measured the resistivity, Seebeck coefficient, thermal conductivity, susceptibility and x-ray absorption in order to evaluate the electronic states and thermoelectric properties of the doped double-perovskite ruthenates. We have observed a large Seebeck coefficient of -160 $μ$V/K and a low thermal conductivity of 7 mW/cmK for $x$=0.1 at 800 K in air. These two values are suitable for efficient oxide thermoelectrics, although the resistivity is still as high as 1 $Ω$cm. From …

The gamma-NaxCoO2 nanotubule using urea-based route can be achieved at 650 degree C at a heating rate of 1 degree C/min and held for 4h. The gamma-NaxCoO2 nanotubule using citric acid-based route can be achieved at 500 degree C using a rapid-heat-up procedure and held for 30 min. The products were investigated using various techniques including XRD, SEM and TEM. Electron diffraction patter…
Nanostructured Zinc oxide (ZnO) was synthesized via a ball milling for 10 hours using high energy planetary ball mill. Phase purity and homogeneity of all the samples have been investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FE-SEM). All the diffraction peaks can be indexed to the hexagonal phase ZnO with hexagonal symmetry (space group P63mc). Average crystallite size was observed to be 20 nm. There was a remarkable suppression in thermal conductivity (κ) compared to the bulk values by a factor of ~50 at room temperature. This suggests to the possibili…
