Spinel structured compounds, $AB_2O_4$, are special because of their exotic multiferroic properties. In $ACr_2O_4$ ($A$=$Co$, $Mn$,$Fe$), a switchable polarization has been observed experimentally due to a non-collinear magnetic spin order. In this article, we demonstrated the microscopic origin behind such magnetic spin order, hysteresis, polarisation and the so-called magnetic compensation effect in $ACr_2O_4$ ($A$=$Co$, $Mn$,$Fe$, $Ni$) using Monte Carlo simulation. With a careful choice of the exchange interaction, we were able to explain various experimental findings such as magnetization vs. temperature (T) behavior, conical stability, unique magnetic ordering and polarization in a representative compound $CoCr_2O_4$ which is the best known multiferroic compound in the $AB_2O_4$ spinel family. We have also studied the effect of $Fe$-substitution in $CoCr_2O_4$, with an onset of few exotic phenomena such as magnetic compensation and sign reversible exchange bias effect. These effects are investigated using an effective interactions mimicking the effect of substitution. Two other compounds in this family, $CoMn_2O_4$ and $CoFe_2O_4$, are also studied where no conical magnetic order and polarisation was observed, as hence provide a distinct contrast. Here all calculations are done using the polarisation calculated by the spin-current model. This model has certain limitation and it works quite good for low temperature and low magnetic field. But the model despite its limitation it can reproduce sign reversible exchange bias and magnetic compensation like phenomena quite well.
We report a ferroelectric order at ~ 98 K for NiFe2O4, which carries an inverse spinel structure with a centrosymmetric Fd3m structure at room temperature. The value of spontaneous electric polarization is considerably high as ~ 0.29 μC/cm2 for 5 kV/cm poling field. The electric polarization decreases considerably (~ 17 %) around liquid nitrogen temperature upon application of 50 kOe field, proposing a significant magnetoelectric coupling. The synchrotron diffraction studies confirm a structural transition at ~ 98 K to a noncentrosymmetric structure of P4122 space group. The occurrence of pola…
Controlling multiferroic behavior in materials will enable the development of a wide variety of technological applications. However, the exact mechanisms driving multiferroic behavior are not well understood in most materials. Two such materials are the spinels MnV2O4 and Mn3O4, where mechanical strain is thought to play a role in determining magnetic behavior. Bulk studies of MnV2O4 have yielded conflicting and inconclusive results, due in part to the presence of mesoscale magnetic inhomogeneity, which complicates the interpretation of bulk measurements. To study the sub-micron-scale magnetic…

The Jahn-Teller effect refers to the symmetry-lowering geometrical distortion in a crystal (or non-linear molecule) due to the presence of a degenerate electronic state. Usually, the Jahn-Teller distortion is not polar. Recently, GaV4S8 with the lacunar spinel structure was found to undergoes a Jahn-Teller distortion from cubic to ferroelectric rhombohedral structure at TJT = 38K. In this work, we carry out a general group theory analysis to show how and when the Jahn-Teller effect gives rise to ferroelectricity. On the basis of this theory, we find that the ferroelectric Jahn-Teller distort i…
The inverse spinels CoFe2O4 and NiFe2O4, which have been of particular interest over the past few years as building blocks of artificial multiferroic heterostructures and as possible spin-filter materials, are investigated by means of density functional theory calculations. We address the effect of epitaxial strain on the magneto-crystalline anisotropy and show that, in agreement with experimental observations, tensile strain favors perpendicular anisotropy, whereas compressive strain favors in-plane orientation of the magnetization. Our calculated magnetostriction constants $λ_{100}$ of about…

We report on the spin-Hall magnetoresistance (SMR) and spin Seebeck effect (SSE) in multiferroic CoCr2O4 (CCO) spinel thin films with Pt contacts. We observe a large enhancement of both signals below the spin-spiral (Ts = 28 K) and the spin lock-in transitions (T_{lock_in} = 14 K). The SMR and SSE response in the spin lock-in phase are one order of magnitude larger than those observed at the ferrimagnetic transition temperature (Tc = 94 K), which indicates that the interaction between spins at the Pt|CCO interface is more efficient in the non-collinear magnetic state below Ts and T_{lock-in}. …
Using a phenomenological Ginzburg-Landau theory for the magnetic conical cycloid state of a multiferroic, which has been recently reported in the cubic spinel CoCr$_{2}$O$_{4}$, we discuss its low-energy fluctuation spectrum. We identify the Goldstone modes of the conical cycloidal order, and deduce their dispersion relations whose signature anisotropy in momentum space reflects the symmetries broken by the ordered state. We discuss the soft polarization fluctuations, the `electromagnons', associated with these magnetic modes and make several experimental predictions which can be tested in neu…
We demonstrate that the onset of complex spin orders in ACr$_2$O$_4$ spinels with magnetic A$=$Co, Fe and Cu ions lowers the lattice symmetry. This is clearly indicated by the emergence of anisotropic lattice dynamics -- as evidenced by the pronounced phonon splittings -- even when experiments probing static distortions fail. We show that the crystal symmetry in the magnetic phase is reduced from tetragonal to orthorhombic for FeCr$_2$O$_4$ and CuCr$_2$O$_4$ with Jahn-Teller active A-site ions. The conical spin structure in FeCr$_2$O$_4$ is also manifested in the phonon frequencies. In contras…
Dynamical properties of the lattice structure was studied by optical spectroscopy in ACr2O4 chromium spinel oxide magnetic semiconductors over a broad temperature region of T=10-335K. The systematic change of the A-site ions (A=Mn, Fe, Co, Ni and Cu) showed that the occupancy of 3d orbitals on the A-site, has strong impact on the lattice dynamics. For compounds with orbital degeneracy (FeCr2O4, NiCr2O4 and CuCr2O4), clear splitting of infrared-active phonon modes and/or activation of silent vibrational modes have been observed upon the Jahn-Teller transition and at the onset of the subsequent …
Based on density functional calculation with LDA+U method, we propose that hypothetical Osmium compounds such as CaOs2O4 and SrOs2O4 can be stabilized in the geometrically frustrated spinel crystal structure. They also show some exotic electronic and magnetic properties in a reasonable range of on-site Coulomb correlation U such as ferromagnetism and orbital magnetoelectric effect characteristic to Axion electrodynamics. Other electronic phases including 3D Dirac metal and Mott insulator exist and would make perspective 5d spinels ideal for applications.
The sulfur based Cr-spinels RCr2S4 with R = Cd and Hg exhibit the coexistence of ferromagnetic and ferroelectric properties together with a pronounced magnetocapacitive coupling. While in CdCr2S4 purely ferromagnetic order is established, in HgCr2S4 a bond-frustrated magnetic ground state is realized, which, however, easily can be driven towards a ferromagnetic configuration in weak magnetic fields. This paper shall review our recent investigation for both compounds. Besides the characterization of the magnetic properties, the complex dielectric permittivity was studied by means of broadband d…
Multiferroic particulate composites have been fabricated by taking the morphotropic phase boundary composition of ferroelectric phase Bi(Ni1/2Ti1/2)O3-PbTiO3 and magnetic phase (Ni,Zn)Fe2O4. The ferroelectric phase has coexisting monoclinic and tetragonal perovskite structures with space group Pm and P4mm, respectively whereas the magnetic phase has spinel cubic structure with space group Fd3m. Rietveld structural analysis for the each components of composite reveals that the tetragonality (c/a) of the ferroelectric phase continuously increases with increasing the concentration of magnetic pha…
Recent experiments on Mn doped multiferroic $CoCr_{2}O_{4}$ indicate that a possible distribution of Mn atoms among tetrahedrally and octahedrally coordinated sites in the spinel lattice give rise to different variations in the structural parameters and saturation magnetisations in different concentration regimes of Mn atoms substituting the Cr. A composition dependent magnetic compensation behaviour points to the role conversions of the magnetic constituents. In this work, we have investigated the thermodynamics of cation disorder in $Co\left(Cr_{1-x}Mn_{x}\right)_{2}O_{4}$ system and it's co…
The lacunar spinel GeV4S8 undergoes orbital and ferroelectric ordering at the Jahn-Teller transition around 30 K and exhibits antiferromagnetic order below about 14 K. In addition to this orbitally driven ferroelectricity, lacunar spinels are an interesting material class, as the vanadium ions form V4 clusters representing stable molecular entities with a common electron distribution and a well-defined level scheme of molecular states resulting in a unique spin state per V4 molecule. Here we report detailed x-ray, magnetic susceptibility, electrical resistivity, heat capacity, thermal expansio…
Cubic spinel CoCr2O4 has attained recent attention due to its multiferroic properties. However, the Co site substitution effect on the structural and magnetic properties has rarely been studied in thin film form. In this work, the structural and magnetic properties of Co1-xNixCr2O4 (x = 0, 0.5) epitaxial thin films deposited on MgAl2O4 (100) and MgO (100) substrates to manipulate the nature of strain in the films using pulsed laser deposition (PLD) technique are presented. The epitaxial nature of the films was confirmed through X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Rutherford backscattering spectrometry…
In the present work, we address the question of an impurity-related origin of the colossal magnetocapacitive effect in the spinel system CdCr2S4. We demonstrate that a strong variation in the dielectric constant below the magnetic transition temperature or in external magnetic fields also arises in crystals prepared without chlorine. This excludes that an inhomogeneous distribution of chlorine impurities at the surface or in the bulk material gives rise to the unusual effects in the spinel multiferroics. In addition, we show that colossal magnetocapacitive effects can be also generated in chlo…
The phase diagram of quarter-hole-doped perovskite manganites is investigated using the doubleexchange model. An exotic striped type-II multiferroic phase, where 25% of the nearest-neighbor spin couplings are orthogonal to each other, is found in the narrow-bandwidth region. Comparing with the spiral-spin ordering phase of undoped manganites, the multiferroic Curie temperature of the new phase is estimated to be ~4 times higher, while the ferroelectric polarization is similar in magnitude. Our study provides a path for noncollinear spin multiferroics based on electronic self-organization, diff…
A unique type of frustrated lattice is found in two A-site ordered spinel oxides, LiGaCr4O8 and LiInCr4O8. Because of the large size mismatch between Li+ and Ga3+/In3+ ions at the A site, the pyrochlore lattice, made up of Cr3+ ions carrying spin 3/2, becomes an alternating array of small and large tetrahedra, i.e., a "breathing" pyrochlore lattice. We introduce a parameter, the breathing factor Bf, which quantifies the degree of frustration in the pyrochlore lattice: Bf is defined as J'/J, where J' and J are nearest-neighbor magnetic interactions in the large and small tetrahedra, respectivel…
Spinel compound, MgV$_2$O$_4$, known as a highly frustrated magnet has been extensively studied both experimentally and theoretically for its exotic quantum magnetic states. However, due to its intrinsic insulating nature in its antiferromagnetic (AFM) ground state, its realistic applications in spintronics are quite limited. Here, based on first-principles calculations, we examine the ferromagnetic (FM) phase of MgV$_2$O$_4$, which was found to host three-dimensional flat band (FB) right near the Fermi level, consequently yielding a large anomalous Hall effect (AHE, $σ\approx 670\,Ω^{-1}\cdot…
Strong spin-orbit coupling lifts the degeneracy of t2g orbitals in 5d transition-metal systems, leaving a Kramers doublet and quartet with effective angular momentum of Jeff = 1/2 and 3/2, respectively. These spin-orbit entangled states can host exotic quantum phases such as topological Mott state, unconventional superconductivity, and quantum spin liquid. The lacunar spinel GaTa4Se8 was theoretically predicted to form the molecular Jeff = 3/2 ground state. Experimental verification of its existence is an important first step to exploring the consequences of the Jeff = 3/2 state. Here, we repo…
The zero-temperature limit of a continuous phase transition is marked by a quantum critical point, which can generate exotic physics that extends to elevated temperatures. Magnetic quantum criticality is now well known, and has been explored in systems ranging from heavy fermion metals to quantum Ising materials. Ferroelectric quantum critical behaviour has also been recently established, motivating a flurry of research investigating its consequences. Here, we introduce the concept of multiferroic quantum criticality, in which both magnetic and ferroelectric quantum criticality occur in the sa…
The Haldane spin-chain compound, Tb2BaNiO5, with two antiferromagnetic transitions, one at T1=63K, and the other at T2=25K, has been recently shown by us to be an exotic multiferroic below T2. Here, we report the results of our investigations of Sr doping at the Ba site by magnetization, heat-capacity, magnetoelectric (MDE), and pyrocurrent measurements. An intriguing finding, which we stress, is that the ferroelectricity is lost even for a doping level of 10 atomic percent, though magnetic ordering prevails. The doped specimens however retain significant magnetodielectric behaviour, but with …
The lacunar spinel GaV4S8 exhibits orbital ordering at 44 K and shows a complex magnetic phase diagram below 12.7 K, which includes ferromagnetic and cycloidal spin order. At low but finite external magnetic fields, Néel-type skyrmions are formed in this material. Skyrmions are whirl-like spin vortices that have received great theoretical interest because of their non-trivial spin topology and that are also considered as basic entities for new data-storage technologies. Interestingly, we found that the orbitally ordered phase shows sizable ferroelectric polarization and that excess spin-driven…
A spin model of quasi-one dimensional LiCu$_{2}$O$_{2}$ compound with ground state of ellipsoidal helical structure in which the helical axis is along the diagonal of CuO$_{4}$ squares has been adopted. By taking into account the interchain coupling and exchange anisotropy, the exotic magnetic properties and ferroelectricity induced by spiral spin order have been studied by performing Monte Carlo simulation. The simulation results qualitatively reproduce the main characters of ferroelectric and magnetic behaviors of LiCu$_{2}$O$_{2}$ compound and confirm the low-temperature incollinear spiral …
The symmetry of local moments plays a defining role in the nature of exotic grounds states stabilized in frustrated magnetic materials. We present inelastic neutron scattering (INS) measurements of the crystal electric field (CEF) excitations in the family of compounds MgRE$_2$Se$_4$ (RE $\in$ $\{$Ho, Tm, Er and Yb$\}$). These compounds form in the spinel structure, with the rare earth ions comprising a highly frustrated pyrochlore sublattice. Within the symmetry constraints of this lattice, we fit both the energies and intensities of observed modes in the INS spectra to determine the most lik…
Competing interactions and geometric frustration provide favourable conditions for exotic states of matter. Such competition often causes multiple phase transitions as a function of temperature and can lead to magnetic structures that break inversion symmetry, thereby inducing ferroelectricity [1-4]. Although this phenomenon is understood phenomenologically [3-4], it is of great interest to have a conceptually simpler system in which ferroelectricity appears coincident with a single magnetic phase transition. Here we report the first such direct transition from a paramagnetic and paraelectric …
Magnetoelectric materials have generated wide technological and scientific interest because of the rich phenomena these materials exhibit, including the coexistence of magnetic and ferroelectric orders, magnetodielectric behavior, and exotic hybrid excitations such as electromagnons. The multiferroic spinel material, CoCr$_2$O$_4$, is a particularly interesting example of a multiferroic material, because evidence for magnetoelectric behavior in the ferrimagnetic phase seems to conflict with traditional noncollinear-spin-driven mechanisms for inducing a macroscopic polarization. This paper repo…
The coexistence and coupling of ferroelasticity and magnetic ordering in a single material offers a great opportunity to realize novel devices with multiple tuning knobs. Complex oxides are a particularly promising class of materials to find multiferroic interactions as they often possess rich phase diagrams and the interactions are very sensitive to external perturbations. Still, there are very few examples of these systems. Here we report the observation of twinning domains in ferroelastic LaCoO3 epitaxial thin films and their geometric control of structural symmetry that are intimately link…
Multiferroic materials, which reveal magnetic and electric order, are in the focus of recent solid state research. Especially the simultaneous occurrence of ferroelectricity and ferromagnetism, combined with an intimate coupling of magnetization and polarization via magneto-capacitive effects, could pave the way for a new generation of electronic devices. Here we present measurements on a simple cubic spinel with unusual properties: It shows ferromagnetic order and simultaneously relaxor ferroelectricity, i.e. a ferroelectric cluster state, reached by a smeared-out phase transition, both with …
Microscopic coupling between the electron spin and the lattice vibration is responsible for an array of exotic properties from morphic effects in simple magnets to magnetodielectric coupling in multiferroic spinels and hematites. Traditionally, a single spin-phonon coupling constant is used to characterize how effectively the lattice can affect the spin, but it is hardly enough to capture novel electromagnetic behaviors to the full extent. Here, we introduce a concept of spin-phonon dispersion to project the spin moment change along the phonon crystal momentum direction, so the entire spin cha…
Geometric frustration is a broad phenomenon that results from an intrinsic incompatibility between some fundamental interactions and the underlying lattice geometry1-7. Geometric frustration gives rise to new fundamental phenomena and is known to yield intriguing effects, such as the formation of exotic states like spin ice, spin liquids and spin glasses1-7. It has also led to interesting findings of fractional charge quantization and magnetic monopoles5,6. Geometric frustration related mechanisms have been proposed to understand the origins of relaxor behavior in some multiferroics, colossal …
Antiferromagnetic insulators on the diamond lattice are candidate materials to host exotic magnetic phenomena ranging from spin-orbital entanglement to degenerate spiral ground-states and topological paramagnetism. Compared to other three-dimensional networks of magnetic ions, such as the geometrically frustrated pyrochlore lattice, the investigation of diamond-lattice magnetism in real materials is less mature. In this work, we characterize the magnetic properties of model A-site spinels CoRh2O4 (cobalt rhodite) and CuRh2O4 (copper rhodite) by means of thermo-magnetic and neutron scattering m…

Using an electric field instead of an electric current (or a magnetic field) to tailor the electronic properties of magnetic materials is promising for realizing ultralow energy-consuming memory devices because of the suppression of Joule heating, especially when the devices are scaled to the nanoscale. In the review, we summarize recent results on the giant magnetization and resistivity modulation in a metamagnetic intermetallic alloy - FeRh, which is achieved by electric-field-controlled magnetic phase transitions in multiferroic heterostructures. Furthermore, the approach is extended to top…
The ferroelectric phase of the multiferroic hexagonal manganites (h-ReMnO3) has been reported to undergo a series of magnetic transitions involving long-range ordering/reorientation of 4fRe3+ and/or 3dMn3+ spins below room temperature. These transitions have attracted a lot of attention in recent years due to the geometrically frustrated nature of magnetic interactions. We have revisited these transitions in high quality single crystals of h-DyMnO3 using dc and ac susceptibility measurements as a function of temperature (T), magnetic field (H) and frequency (w) supplemented by specific heat me…
Our world is composed of various materials with different structures, where spin structures have been playing a pivotal role in spintronic devices of the contemporary information technology. Apart from conventional collinear spin materials such as collinear ferromagnets and collinear antiferromagnetically coupled materials, noncollinear spintronic materials have emerged as hot spots of research attention owing to exotic physical phenomena. In this Review, we firstly introduce two types noncollinear spin structures, i.e., the chiral spin structure that yields real-space Berry phases and the cop…
