The emergence of a compressible insulator phase, known as the Bose glass, is characteristic of the interplay of interactions and disorder in correlated Bose fluids. While widely studied in tight-binding models, its observation remains elusive owing to stringent temperature effects. Here we show that this issue may be overcome by using Lieb-Liniger bosons in shallow quasiperiodic potentials. A Bose glass, surrounded by superfluid and Mott phases, is found above a critical potential and for finite interactions. At finite temperature, we show that the melting of the Mott lobes is characteristic of a fractal structure and find that the Bose glass is robust against thermal fluctuations up to temperatures accessible in quantum gases. Our results raise questions about the universality of the Bose glass transition in such shallow quasiperiodic potentials.
Nonequilibrium dynamics of a Lieb-Liniger system in the presence of the hard-wall potential is studied. We demonstrate that a time-dependent wave function, which describes quantum dynamics of a Lieb-Liniger wave packet comprised of N particles, can be found by solving an $N$-dimensional Fourier transform; this follows from the symmetry properties of the many-body eigenstates in the presence of the hard-wall potential. The presented formalism is employed to numerically calculate reflection of a few-body wave packet from the hard wall for various interaction strengths and incident momenta.
We study the nonequilibrium properties of the one dimensional Lieb Liniger model in the finite repulsion regime. Introducing a new version of the Yudson representation applicable to finite size systems and appropriately taking the infinite volume limit we are able to study equilibration of the Lieb Liniger gas in the thermodynamic limit. We provide a formalism to compute various correlation functions for highly non equilibrium initial states. We are able to find explicit analytic expressions for the long time limit of the expectation of the density, density density and related correlation func…
We address the problem of calculating finite-temperature response functions of an experimentally relevant low-dimensional strongly-correlated system: the integrable 1D Bose gas with repulsive δ-function interaction (Lieb-Liniger model). Focusing on the observable dynamical density-density function, we present a Bethe Ansatz-based method allowing for its accurate evaluation over a broad range of momenta, frequencies, temperatures and interaction parameters, in finite but large systems. We show how thermal fluctuations smoothen the zero temperature critical behavior and present explicit quantita…
In this work we study a quench between a Mott insulator and a repulsive Lieb-Liniger liquid. We find explicitly the stationary state when a long time has passed after the quench. It is given by a GGE density matrix which we completely characterize, calculating the quasiparticle density describing the system after the quench. In the long time limit we find an explicit form for the local three body density density density correlation function and the asymptotic long distance limit of the density density correlation function. The later is shown to have a Gaussian decay at large distances.
A one-dimensional model of bosons with repulsive short-range interactions, solved analytically by Lieb and Liniger many years ago, predicts existence of two branches of elementary excitations. One of them represents Bogoliubov phonons, the other, as suggested by some authors, might be related to dark solitons. On the other hand, it has been already demonstrated within a framework of the classical field approximation that quasi-one-dimensional interacting Bose gas at equilibrium exhibits excitations which are phonons and dark solitons. By showing that statistical distributions of dark solitons …
We study how dark solitons, i.e. solutions of one-dimensional single-particle nonlinear time-dependent Schrödinger equation, emerge from eigenstates of a linear many-body model of contact interacting bosons moving on a ring, the Lieb-Liniger model. This long-standing problem was addressed by various groups, which presented different, seemingly unrelated, procedures to reveal the solitonic waves directly from the many-body model. Here, we propose a unification of these results using a simple Ansatz for the many-body eigenstate of the Lieb-Liniger model, which gives us access to systems of hundr…
This article presents an elementary introduction on various aspects of the prototypical integrable model the Lieb-Liniger Bose gas ranging from the cooperative to the collective features of many-body phenomena [1]. In 1963 Lieb and Liniger first solved this quantum field theory many-body problem using the Bethe's hypothesis, i.e. a particular form of wave function introduced by Bethe in solving the one-dimensional Heisenberg model in 1931. Despite the Lieb-Liniger model is arguably the simplest exactly solvable model, it exhibits rich quantum many-body physics in terms of the aspects of mathem…
The large-distance behavior of the density-density correlation function in the Lieb-Liniger model at finite temperature is investigated by means of the recently derived nonlinear integral equations characterizing the correlation lengths. We present extensive numerical results covering all the physical regimes fromweak to strong interaction and all temperatures. We find that the leading term of the asymptotic expansion becomes oscillatory at a critical temperature which decreases with the strength of the interaction. As we approach the Tonks-Girardeau limit the asymptotic behavior becomes more …
While Padé approximation is a general method for improving convergence of series expansions, Gell-Mann--Low renormalization group normally relies on the presence of special symmetries. We show that in the single-variable case, the latter becomes an integral Hermite-Padé approximation, needing no special symmetries. It is especially useful for interpolating between expansions for small values of a variable and a scaling law of known exponent for large values. As an example, we extract the scaling-law prefactor for the one-body density matrix of the Lieb-Liniger gas. Using a new result for the 4…
We study the integrable model of one-dimensional bosons with contact repulsion. In the limit of weak interaction, we use the microscopic hydrodynamic theory to obtain the excitation spectrum. The statistics of quasiparticles changes with the increase of momentum. At lowest momenta good quasiparticles are fermions, while at higher momenta they are Bogoliubov bosons, in accordance with recent studies. In the limit of strong interaction, we analyze the exact solution and find exact results for the spectrum in terms of the asymptotic series. Those results undoubtedly suggest that fermionic quasipa…
We derive a connection between the fourth coefficient of the short-distance Taylor expansion of the one-body correlation function, and the local three-body correlation function of the Lieb-Liniger model of $δ$-interacting spinless bosons in one dimension. This connection, valid at arbitrary interaction strength, involves the fourth moment of the density of quasi-momenta. Generalizing recent conjectures, we propose approximate analytical expressions for the fourth coefficient covering the whole range of repulsive interactions, validated by comparison with accurate numerics. In particular, we fi…
The universal Tan relations connect a variety of microscopic features of many-body quantum systems with two-body contact interactions to a single quantity, called the contact. The latter has become pivotal in the description of quantum gases. We provide a complete characterization of the Tan contact of the harmonically trapped Lieb-Liniger gas for arbitrary interactions and temperature.Combining thermal Bethe ansatz, local-density approximation, and exact quantum Monte Carlo calculations,we show that the contact is a universal function of only two scaling parameters, and determine the scaling f…
We probe the excitation spectrum of an ultracold one-dimensional Bose gas of Cesium atoms with repulsive contact interaction that we tune from the weakly to the strongly interacting regime via a magnetic Feshbach resonance. The dynamical structure factor, experimentally obtained using Bragg spectroscopy, is compared to integrability-based calculations valid at arbitrary interactions and finite temperatures. Our results unequivocally underly the fact that hole-like excitations, which have no counterpart in higher dimensions, actively shape the dynamical response of the gas.
We present an exact numerical study of the scaling of density and momentum distribution functions of harmonically trapped one-dimensional bosons with repulsive contact interactions at zero and finite temperatures. We use path integral quantum Monte Carlo with worm updates in our calculations at finite interaction strengths, and the Bose-Fermi mapping in the Tonks-Girardeau regime. We discuss the homogeneous case and, within the local density approximation, use it to motivate the scaling in the presence of a harmonic trap. For the momentum distribution function, we pay special attention to the …
We use Gaudin's Fermi-Bose mapping operator to calculate exact solutions for the Lieb-Liniger model in a linear (constant force) potential (the constructed exact stationary solutions are referred to as the Lieb-Liniger-Airy wave functions). The ground state properties of the gas in the wedge-like trapping potential are calculated in the strongly interacting regime by using Girardeau's Fermi-Bose mapping and the pseudopotential approach in the $1/c$-approximation ($c$ denotes the strength of the interaction). We point out that quantum dynamics of Lieb-Liniger wave packets in the linear potentia…
We show that the contact parameter of N harmonically-trapped interacting 1D bosons at zero temperature can be analytically and accurately obtained by a simple rescaling of the exact two-boson solution, and that N-body effects can be almost factorized. The small deviations observed between our analytical results and DMRG calculations are more pronounced when the interaction energy is maximal (i.e. at intermediate interaction strengths) but they remain bounded by the large-N local-density approximation obtained from the Lieb-Liniger equation of state stemming from the Bethe Ansatz. The rescaled …
We study long-time dynamics of a bosonic system after suddenly switching on repulsive delta-like interactions. As initial states, we consider two experimentally relevant configurations: a rotating BEC and two counter-propagating BECs with opposite momentum, both on a ring. In the first case, the rapidity distribution function for the stationary state is derived analytically and it is given by the distribution obtained for the same quench starting from a BEC, shifted by the momentum of each boson. In the second case, the rapidity distribution function is obtained numerically for generic values …
Using the Bethe ansatz solution, we analytically study expansionary, magnetic and interacting Grüneisen parameters (GPs) for one-dimensional (1D) Lieb-Liniger and Yang-Gaudin models. These different GPs elegantly quantify the dependences of characteristic energy scales of these quantum gases on the volume, the magnetic field and the interaction strength, revealing the caloric effects resulted from the variations of these potentials. The obtained GPs further confirm an identity which is incurred by the symmetry of the thermal potential. We also present universal scaling behavior of these GPs in…
We review the recent theoretical and experimental progress regarding the Generalized Hydrodynamics (GHD) behavior of the one-dimensional Bose gas with contact repulsive interactions, also known as the Lieb-Liniger gas. In the first section, we review the theory of the Lieb-Liniger gas, introducing the key notions of the rapidities and of the rapidity distribution. The latter characterizes the Lieb-Liniger gas after relaxation and is at the heart of GHD. We also present the asymptotic regimes of the Lieb-Liniger gas with their dedicated approximate descriptions. In the second section we enter t…
We study the density-density correlation function of the 1D Lieb-Liniger model and obtain an exact expression for the small momentum limit of the static correlator in the thermodynamic limit. We achieve this by summing exactly over the relevant form factors of the density operator in the small momentum limit. The result is valid for any eigenstate, including thermal and non-thermal states. We also show that the small momentum limit of the dynamic structure factors obeys a generalized detailed balance relation valid for any equilibrium state.
We study the classical and quantum Fisher information for the Lieb-Liniger model. The Fisher information has been studied extensively when the parameter is inscribed on a quantum state by a unitary process, e.g., Mach-Zehnder or Ramsey interferometry. Here, we investigate the case that a Hamiltonian parameter to be estimated is imprinted on eigenstates of that Hamiltonian, and thus is not necessarily encoded by a unitary operator. Taking advantage of the fact that the Lieb-Liniger model is exactly solvable, the Fisher information is determined for periodic and hard-wall boundary conditions, va…
Quantum systems exhibit recurrence phenomena after equilibration, but it is a difficult task to evaluate the recurrence time of a quantum system because it drastically increases as the system size increases (usually double-exponential in the number of particles) and strongly depends on the initial state. Here, we analytically derive the recurrence times of the Lieb-Liniger model with relatively small particle numbers for the weak and strong coupling regimes. It turns out that these recurrence times are independent of the initial state and increases only polynomially in the system size.
The Lieb-Liniger model describes one-dimensional bosons interacting through a repulsive contact potential. In this work, we introduce an extended version of this model by replacing the contact potential with a decaying exponential. Using the recently developed continuous matrix product states techniques, we explore the ground state phase diagram of this model by examining the superfluid and density correlation functions. At weak coupling superfluidity governs the ground state, in a similar way as in the Lieb-Liniger model. However, at strong coupling quasi-crystal and super-Tonks-Girardeau reg…
In 1963, Lieb and Liniger solved exactly a one dimensional model of bosons interacting by a repulsive δ-potential and calculated the ground state in the thermodynamic limit. In the present work, we extend this model to a potential of three δ-functions, one of them is repulsive and the other two are attractive, modeling some aspects of the interaction between atoms, and present an approximate solution for a dilute gas. In this limit, for low energy states, the results are found to be reduced to the ones of an effective Lieb Liniger model with an effective δ-function of strength $c_{eff}$ and th…
Taking advantage of an exact mapping between a relativistic integrable model and the Lieb-Liniger model we present a novel method to compute expectation values in the Lieb-Liniger Bose gas both at zero and finite temperature. These quantities, relevant in the physics of one-dimensional ultracold Bose gases, are expressed by a series that has a remarkable behavior of convergence. Among other results, we show the computation of the three-body expectation value at finite temperature, a quantity that rules the recombination rate of the Bose gas.
The repulsive Lieb-Liniger model can be obtained as the non-relativistic limit of the Sinh-Gordon model: all physical quantities of the latter model (S-matrix, Lagrangian and operators) can be put in correspondence with those of the former. We use this mapping, together with the Thermodynamical Bethe Ansatz equations and the exact form factors of the Sinh-Gordon model, to set up a compact and general formalism for computing the expectation values of the Lieb-Liniger model both at zero and finite temperature. The computation of one-point correlators is thoroughly detailed and, when possible, co…
In this letter we derive formulas for multi point correlation functions, in the thermodynamic limit, for the Lieb Liniger gas taken with respect to arbitrary eigenstates. These results apply for the ground state, thermal states and GGE states. We obtain these correlation functions as a series of multiple integrals of progressively higher dimensions. These integrals converge rapidly for short distance correlation functions and low densities of particles. The series derived matches exactly the LeClair Mussardo formula for correlation functions of relativistic integrable models.
The Lieb-Liniger model which has a weak external potential term under the periodic boundary condition is investigated. By exploiting the Bethe states as bases, we perform a perturbation analysis up to the first order to obtain the shifts of eigenenergies and corresponding eigenstates which have been brought about by the external potential. If we take a sufficiently large system, the eigenstates can be "the Schrödinger's cat states". Expectation values of the density operator taken between two Bethe states can be calculated with the aid of the Slavnov's formula and we evaluate the influence of …
We derive explicit expressions for dynamical correlations of the field and density operators in the Lieb-Liniger model, within an arbitrary eigenstate with a small particle density ${\cal D}$. They are valid for all space and time and any interaction strength $c>0$, and are the leading order of an expansion in ${\cal D}$. This expansion is obtained by writing the correlation functions as sums over form factors when formally decomposed into partial fractions.
We consider the construction of a generalized Gibbs ensemble composed of complete bases of conserved charges in the repulsive Lieb-Liniger model. We will show that it is possible to construct these bases with varying locality as well as demonstrating that such constructions are always possible provided one has in hand at least one complete basis set of charges. This procedure enables the construction of bases of charges that possess well defined, finite expectation values given an arbitrary initial state. We demonstrate the use of these charges in the context of two different quantum quenches:…
We examine a parametric cycle in the N-body Lieb-Liniger model that starts from the free system and goes through Tonks-Girardeau and super-Tonks-Girardeau regimes and comes back to the free system. We show the existence of exotic quantum holonomy, whose detailed workings are analysed with the specific sample of two- and three body systems. The classification of eigenstates based on clustering structure naturally emerges from the analysis.
We review the recently introduced thermodynamic form factors for pairs of particle-hole excitations on finite-entropy states in the Lieb-Liniger model. We focus on the density operator and we show how the form factors can be used for analytic computations of dynamical correlation functions. We derive a new representation for the form factors and we discuss some aspects of their structure. We rigorously show that in the small momentum limit (or equivalently, on hydrodynamic scales) a single particle-hole excitation fully saturates the spectral sum and we also discuss the contribution from two p…
We study a one-dimensional multicomponent anyon model that reduces to a multicomponent Lieb-Liniger gas of impenetrable bosons (Tonks-Girardeau gas) for vanishing statistics parameter. At fixed component densities, the coordinate Bethe ansatz gives a family of quantum phase transitions at special values of the statistics parameter. We show that the ground state energy changes extensively between different phases. Special regimes are studied and a general classification for the transition points is given. An interpretation in terms of statistics of composite particles is proposed.
Ultracold atoms placed in a tight cigar-shaped trap are usually described in terms of the Lieb-Liniger model. We study the extensions of this model which arise when van der Waals interaction between atoms is taken into account. We find that the corrections induced by the finite range of interactions can become especially important in the vicinity of narrow Feshbach resonances and suggest realistic schemes of their experimental detection. The interplay of confinement and interactions can lead to effective transparency where the one-dimensional interactions are weak in a wide range of parameters…
We derive the large particle number limit of the Bethe equations for the ground state of the attractive one-dimensional Bose gas (Lieb-Liniger model) on a ring and solve it for arbitrary coupling. We show that the ground state of this system can be mapped to the large-N saddle point of Euclidean Yang-Mills theory on a two-sphere with a U(N) gauge group, and the phase transition that interpolates between the homogeneous and solitonic regime is dual to the Douglas-Kazakov confimenent-deconfinement phase transition.
In this paper, we apply experimental number theory to two integrable quantum models in one dimension, the Lieb-Liniger Bose gas and the Yang-Gaudin Fermi gas with contact interactions. We identify patterns in weak- and strong-coupling series expansions of the ground-state energy, local correlation functions and pressure. Based on the most accurate data available in the literature, we make a few conjectures about their mathematical structure and extrapolate to higher orders.
We consider the entanglement between two spatial subregions in the Lieb-Liniger model of bosons in one spatial dimension interacting via a contact interaction. Using ground state path integral quantum Monte Carlo we numerically compute the Rényi entropy of the reduced density matrix of the subsystem as a measure of entanglement. Our numerical algorithm is based on a replica method previously introduced by the authors, which we extend to efficiently study the entanglement of spatial subsystems of itinerant bosons. We confirm a logarithmic scaling of the Rényi entropy with subsystem size that is…
Lieb-Liniger model describes bosons with contact interactions in one-dimensional space. In the limit of weak repulsive particle interactions, there are two types of low lying excitation spectrum. The first is reproduced by the Bogoliubov dispersion relation, the other is believed to correspond to dark soliton excitations. While there are various evidences that the type II spectrum is related to dark solitons, it has not been shown that measurements of positions of particles reveal dark soliton density profiles. Here, we employ the Bethe ansatz approach and show that dark solitons emerge in the…
We study the ground state one-body correlation function in the Lieb-Liniger model. In the spectral representation, correlations are built from contributions stemming from different excited states of the model. We aim to understand which excited states carry significant contributions, specifically focusing on the small energy-momentum part of the dynamic one-body function. We conjecture that relevant excitations take form similar to two-spinon states known from XXZ spin chain. We validate this hypothesis by numerical evaluation of the correlator with ABACUS algorithm and by analytical computati…
Recently, Imambekov and Glazman [Phys. Rev. Lett. 100, 206805 (2008)] showed that the dynamic structure factor (DSF) of the 1D Bose gas demonstrates power-law behaviour along the limiting dispersion curve of the collective modes and calculated the corresponding exponents exactly. Combining these recent results with a previously obtained strong-coupling expansion we present an interpolation formula for the DSF of the 1D Bose gas. The obtained expression is further consistent with exact low energy exponents from Luttinger liquid theory and shows nice agreement with recent numerical results.
We present a systematic procedure to extract the perturbative series for the ground state energy density in the Lieb-Liniger and Gaudin-Yang models, starting from the Bethe ansatz solution. This makes it possible to calculate explicitly the coefficients of these series and to study their large order behavior. We find that both series diverge factorially and are not Borel summable. In the case of the Gaudin-Yang model, the first Borel singularity is determined by the non-perturbative energy gap. This provides a new perspective on the Cooper instability.
In a previous series of papers it was proposed that black holes can be understood as Bose-Einstein condensates at the critical point of a quantum phase transition. Therefore other bosonic systems with quantum criticalities, such as the Lieb-Liniger model with attractive interactions, could possibly be used as toy models for black holes. Even such simple models are hard to analyse, as mean field theory usually breaks down at the critical point. Very few analytic results are known. In this paper we present a method of studying such systems at quantum critical points analytically. We will be able…
We consider the time evolution of local observables after an interaction quench in the repulsive Lieb-Liniger model. The system is initialized in the ground state for vanishing interaction and then time-evolved with the Lieb-Liniger Hamiltonian for large, finite interacting strength $c$. We employ the Quench Action approach to express the full time evolution of local observables in terms of sums over energy eigenstates and then derive the leading terms of a $1/c$ expansion for several one and two-point functions as a function of time $t > 0$ after the quantum quench. We observe delicate cancel…
Recent exact solutions of the 1D Kardar-Parisi-Zhang equation make use of the 1D integrable Lieb-Liniger model of interacting bosons. For flat initial conditions, it requires the knowledge of the overlap between the uniform state and arbitrary exact Bethe eigenstates. The same quantity is also central in the study of the quantum quench from a 1D non-interacting Bose-Einstein condensate upon turning interactions. We compare recent advances in both domains, i.e. our previous exact solution, and a new conjecture by De Nardis et al.. This leads to new exact results and conjectures for both the qua…
We investigate the relaxation dynamics of the integrable Lieb-Liniger model of contact-interacting bosons in one dimension following a sudden quench of the collisional interaction strength. The system is initially prepared in its noninteracting ground state and the interaction strength is then abruptly switched to a positive value, corresponding to repulsive interactions between the bosons. We calculate equal-time correlation functions of the nonequilibrium Bose field for small systems of up to five particles via symbolic evaluation of coordinate Bethe-ansatz expressions for operator matrix el…
The kicked rotor system is a textbook example of how classical and quantum dynamics can drastically differ. The energy of a classical particle confined to a ring and kicked periodically will increase linearly in time whereas in the quantum version the energy saturates after a finite number of kicks. The quantum system undergoes Anderson localization in the angular-momentum space. Conventional wisdom says that in a many-particle system with short-range interactions the localization will be destroyed due to the coupling of widely separated momentum states. Here we provide evidence that for an in…
We develop an alternative description to solve the problem of the ground-state energy of the Lieb-Liniger model that describes one-dimensional bosons with contact repulsion. For this integrable model we express the Lieb integral equation in the representation of Chebyshev polynomials. The latter form is convenient to efficiently obtain very precise numerical results in the singular limit of weak interaction. Such highly precise data enable us to use the integer relation algorithm to discover the analytical form of the coefficients in the expansion of the ground-state energy for small values of…
The one-dimensional Lieb-Liniger Bose gas is a prototypical many-body system featuring universal Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid (TLL) physics and free fermion quantum criticality. We analytically calculate finite temperature local pair correlations for the strong coupling Bose gas at quantum criticality using the polylog function in the framework of the Yang-Yang thermodynamic equations. We show that the local pair correlation has the universal value $g^{(2)}(0)\approx 2 p/(n\varepsilon)$ in the quantum critical regime, the TLL phase and the quasi-classical region, where $p$ is the pressure per uni…
The Lieb-Liniger model is a prototypical integrable model and has been turned into the benchmark physics in theoretical and numerical investigations of low dimensional quantum systems. In this note, we present various methods for calculating local and nonlocal $M$-particle correlation functions, momentum distribution and static structure factor. In particular, using the Bethe ansatz wave function of the strong coupling Lieb-Liniger model, we analytically calculate two-point correlation function, the large moment tail of momentum distribution and static structure factor of the model in terms of…
Aiming at studying the emergence of Non-Equilibrium Steady States (NESS) in quantum integrable models by means of an exact analytical method, we focus on the Tonks-Girardeau or hard-core boson limit of the Lieb-Liniger model. We consider the abrupt expansion of a gas from one half to the entire confining box, a prototypical case of inhomogeneous quench, also known as "geometric quench". Based on the exact calculation of quench overlaps, we develop an analytical method for the derivation of the NESS by rigorously treating the thermodynamic and large time and distance limit. Our method is based …
