Aiming at studying the emergence of Non-Equilibrium Steady States (NESS) in quantum integrable models by means of an exact analytical method, we focus on the Tonks-Girardeau or hard-core boson limit of the Lieb-Liniger model. We consider the abrupt expansion of a gas from one half to the entire confining box, a prototypical case of inhomogeneous quench, also known as "geometric quench". Based on the exact calculation of quench overlaps, we develop an analytical method for the derivation of the NESS by rigorously treating the thermodynamic and large time and distance limit. Our method is based on complex analysis tools for the derivation of the asymptotics of the many-body wavefunction, does not make essential use of the effectively non-interacting character of the hard-core boson gas and is sufficiently robust for generalisation to the genuinely interacting case.
We study the non-equilibrium dynamics of a Tonks-Girardeau gas released from a parabolic trap to a circle. We present the exact analytic solution of the many body dynamics and prove that, for large times and in a properly defined thermodynamic limit, the reduced density matrix of any finite subsystem converges to a generalized Gibbs ensemble. The equilibration mechanism is expected to be the same for all one-dimensional systems.
A significant feature of the one-dimensional super Tonks-Girardeau gas is its metastable gas-like state with a stronger Fermi-like pressure than for free fermions which prevents a collapse of atoms. This naturally suggests a way to search for such strongly correlated behaviour in systems of interacting fermions in one dimension. We thus show that the strongly attractive Fermi gas without polarization can be effectively described by a super Tonks-Girardeau gas composed of bosonic Fermi pairs with attractive pair-pair interaction. A natural description of such super Tonks-Girardeau gases is prov…
We present results from quantum Monte Carlo simulations of trapped bosons in optical lattices, focusing on the crossover from a gas of softcore bosons to a Tonks-Girardeau gas in a one-dimensional optical lattice. We find that depending on the quantity being measured, the behavior found in the Tonks-Girardeau regime is observed already at relatively small values of the interaction strength. A finite critical value for entering the Tonks-Girardeau regime does not exist. Furthermore, we discuss the computational efficiency of two quantum Monte Carlo methods to simulate large scale trapped bosoni…
We study the local correlations in the super Tonks-Girardeau gas, a highly excited, strongly correlated state obtained in quasi one-dimensional Bose gases by tuning the scattering length to large negative values using a confinement-induced resonance. Exploiting a connection with a relativistic field theory, we obtain results for the two-body and three-body local correlators at zero and finite temperature. At zero temperature our result for the three-body correlator agrees with the extension of the results of Cheianov et al. [Phys. Rev. A 73, 051604(R) (2006)], obtained for the ground-state of …
Using a scaling transformation we exactly determine the dynamics of an harmonically confined Tonks-Girardeau gas under arbitrary time variations of the trap frequency. We show how during a one-dimensional expansion a ``dynamical fermionization'' occurs as the momentum distribution rapidly approaches an ideal Fermi gas distribution, and that under a sudden change of the trap frequency the gas undergoes undamped breathing oscillations displaying alternating bosonic and fermionic character in momentum space. The absence of damping in the oscillations is a peculiarity of the truly Tonks regime.
We consider the general problem of quenching an interacting Bose gas from the noninteracting regime to the strong repulsive case described by the Tonks-Girardeau limit, with the initial state being a gaussian ensemble for the bosons. A generic multi-point correlation function in the steady state can be fully described in terms of a Fredholm-like determinant suitable both for a numerical study and for an analytical study in certain limiting cases. Finally, we extend the study to the presence of a smooth confining potential showing that, in the thermodynamic limit, the time evolution of the two-…
We investigate the large-time asymptotical behavior of a mobile impurity immersed in a degenerate Tonks-Girardeau gas. We derive a correct weak-coupling kinetic equation valid for arbitrary ratio of masses of gas and impurity particles. When gas particles are either lighter or heavier than the impurity we find that our theory is equivalent to the Boltzmann theory with the collision integral calculated via the Fermi Golden Rule. On the contrary, in the equal-mass case, Fermi Golden Rule treatment gives false results due to not accounting for multiple coherent scattering events. The latter are t…
Recent experiments on ultracold atomic alkali gases in a one-dimensional optical lattice have demonstrated the transition from a gas of soft-core bosons to a Tonks-Girardeau gas in the hard-core limit, where one-dimensional bosons behave like fermions in many respects. We have studied the underlying many-body physics through numerical simulations which accommodate both the soft-core and hard-core limits in one single framework. We find that the Tonks-Girardeau gas is reached only at the strongest optical lattice potentials. Results for slightly higher densities, where the gas develops a Mott-l…
We provide evidence in support of a recent proposal by Astrakharchik at al. for the existence of a super Tonks-Girardeau gas-like state in the attractive interaction regime of quasi-one-dimensional Bose gases. We show that the super Tonks-Giradeau gas-like state corresponds to a highly-excited Bethe state in the integrable interacting Bose gas for which the bosons acquire hard-core behaviour. The gas-like state properties vary smoothly throughout a wide range from strong repulsion to strong attraction. There is an additional stable gas-like phase in this regime in which the bosons form two-bod…
Correlation functions related to the dynamic density response of the one-dimensional Bose gas in the model of Lieb and Liniger are calculated. An exact Bose-Fermi mapping is used to work in a fermionic representation with a pseudopotential Hamiltonian. The Hartree-Fock and generalized random phase approximations are derived and the dynamic polarizability is calculated. The results are valid to first order in 1/γwhere γis Lieb-Liniger coupling parameter. Approximations for the dynamic and static structure factor at finite temperature are presented. The results preclude superfluidity at any fini…
We consider the non-equilibrium dynamics of a gas of impenetrable bosons released from a harmonic trapping potential to a circle. The many body dynamics is solved analytically and the time dependence of all the physically relevant correlations is described. We prove that, for large times and in the thermodynamic limit, the reduced density matrix of any subsystem converges to a generalized Gibbs ensemble as a consequence of the integrability of the model. We discuss the approach to the stationary behavior at late times. We also describe the time-dependence of the entanglement entropy which atta…
We apply the theory of Quantum Generalized Hydrodynamics (QGHD) introduced in [Phys. Rev. Lett. 124, 140603 (2020)] to derive asymptotically exact results for the density fluctuations and the entanglement entropy of a one-dimensional trapped Bose gas in the Tonks-Girardeau (TG) or hard-core limit, after a trap quench from a double well to a single well. On the analytical side, the quadratic nature of the theory of QGHD is complemented with the emerging conformal invariance at the TG point to fix the universal part of those quantities. Moreover, the well-known mapping of hard-core bosons to fre…
We derive an exact description of the non-equilibrium dynamics at finite temperature for the anyonic Tonks-Girardeau gas extending the results of Atas et al. [Phys. Rev. A 95, 043622 (2017)] to the case of arbitrary statistics. The one-particle reduced density matrix is expressed as the Fredholm minor of an integral operator with the kernel being the one-particle Green's function of free fermions at finite temperature and the statistics parameter determining the constant in front of the integral operator. We show that the numerical evaluation of this representation using Nyström's method signi…
We study the quantum dynamics of a one-dimensional gas of impenetrable bosons on a ring, and investigate the interference that results when an initially trapped gas localized on one side of the ring is released, split via an optical-dipole grating, and recombined on the other side of the ring. Large visibility interference fringes arise when the wavevector of the optical dipole grating is larger than the effective Fermi wavevector of the initial gas.
We investigate a dilute mixture of bosons and spin-polarized fermions in one-dimension. With an attractive Bose-Fermi scattering length the ground-state is a self-bound droplet, i.e. a Bose-Fermi bright soliton where the Bose and Fermi clouds are superimposed. We find that the quantum fluctuations stabilize the Bose-Fermi soliton such that the one-dimensional bright soliton exists for any finite attractive Bose-Fermi scattering length. We study density profile and collective excitations of the atomic bright soliton showing that they depend on the bosonic regime involved: mean-field or Tonks-Gi…
A kinetic theory describing the motion of an impurity particle in a degenerate Tonks-Girardeau gas is presented. The theory is based on the one-dimensional Boltzmann equation. An iterative procedure for solving this equation is proposed, leading to the exact solution in number of special cases and to an approximate solution with the explicitly specified precision in a general case. Previously we have reported that the impurity reaches a non-thermal steady state, characterized by an impurity momentum $p_\infty$ depending on its initial momentum $p_0$. In the present paper the detailed derivatio…
In this paper, we investigate the ground-state properties of a bosonic Tonks-Girardeau gas confined in a one-dimensional periodic potential. The single-particle reduced density matrix is computed numerically for systems up to $N=265$ bosons. Scaling analysis of the occupation number of the lowest orbital shows that there are no Bose-Einstein Condensation(BEC) for the periodically trapped TG gas in both commensurate and incommensurate cases. We find that, in the commensurate case, the scaling exponents of the occupation number of the lowest orbital, the amplitude of the lowest orbital and the z…
We present an ab initio stochastic method for calculating thermal properties of a trapped, 1D Bose-gas covering the whole range from weak to strong interactions. Discretization of the problem results in a Bose-Hubbard-like Hamiltonian, whose imaginary time evolution is made computationally accessible by stochastic factorization of the kinetic energy. To achieve convergence for low enough temperatures such that quantum fluctuations are essential, the stochastic factorization is generalized to blocks, and ideas from density-matrix renormalization are employed. We compare our numerical results fo…
The scaling of the largest eigenvalue $λ_0$ of the one-body density matrix of a system with respect to its particle number $N$ defines an exponent $\mathcal{C}$ and a coefficient $\mathcal{B}$ via the asymptotic relation $λ_0 \sim \mathcal{B}\,N^{\mathcal{C}}$. The case $\mathcal{C}=1$ corresponds to off-diagonal long-range order. For a one-dimensional homogeneous Tonks-Girardeau gas, a well known result also confirmed by bosonization gives instead $\mathcal{C}=1/2$. Here we investigate the inhomogeneous case, initially addressing the behaviour of $\mathcal{C}$ in presence of a general externa…
We develop a general approach for calculating the characteristic function of the work distribution of quantum many-body systems in a time-varying potential, whose many-body wave function can be cast in the Slater determinant form. Our results are applicable to a wide range of systems including an ideal gas of spinless fermions in one dimension (1D), the Tonks-Girardeau (TG) gas of hard-core bosons, as well as a 1D gas of hard-core anyons. In order to illustrate the utility of our approach, we focus on the TG gas confined to an arbitrary time-dependent trapping potential. In particular, we use …
We analyze a recent experiment on a Tonks-Girardeau gas of $^{87}$Rb atoms (T. Kinoshita, T. Wenger, and D.S. Weiss, Science {\bf 305}, 1125 (2004)). We find that the experimental data are compatible with the one-dimensional theory of Lieb, Seiringer and Yngvason (Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 91}, 150401 (2003)) but are better described by a theory that takes into account variations in the transverse width of the atomic cloud. By using this theory we investigate also the free axial expansion of the $^{87}$Rb gas in different regimes: Tonks-Girardeau gas, one-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensate and t…
We consider the one-dimensional Lieb-Liniger model (bosons interacting via 2-body delta potentials) in the infinite coupling constant limit (the so-called Tonks-Girardeau model). This model might be relevant as a description of atomic Bose gases confined in a one-dimensional geometry. It is known to have a fermionic spectrum since the N-body wavefunctions have to vanish at coinciding points, and therefore be symmetrizations of fermionic Slater wavefunctions. We argue that in the infinite coupling constant limit the model is indistinguishable from free fermions, i.e., all physically accessible …
We study many-body quantum dynamics of $δ$-interacting bosons confined in a one-dimensional ring. Main attention is payed to the transition from the mean-field to Tonks-Girardeau regime using an approach developed in the theory of interacting particles. We analyze, both analytically and numerically, how the Shannon entropy of the wavefunction and the momentum distribution depend on time for a weak and strong interactions. We show that the transition from regular (quasi-periodic) to irregular ("chaotic") dynamics coincides with the onset of the Tonks-Girardeau regime. In the latter regime the m…
We provide a thorough characterisation of the zero-temperature one-particle density matrix of trapped interacting anyonic gases in one dimension, exploiting recent advances in the field theory description of spatially inhomogeneous quantum systems. We first revisit homogeneous anyonic gases with point-wise interactions. In the harmonic Luttinger liquid expansion of the one-particle density matrix for finite interaction strength, the non-universal field amplitudes were not yet known. We extract them from the Bethe Ansatz formula for the field form factors, providing an exact asymptotic expansio…
We provide evidence of a superfluid-insulator transition (SIT) of magnons in a quasi-one-dimensional quantum ferrimagnet with {\it isotropic} competing antiferromagnetic spin interactions. This SIT occurs between two distinct ferrimagnetic phases due to the frustration-induced closing of the gap to a magnon excitation. It thus causes a coherent superposition of singlet and triplet states at lattice unit cells and a power-law decay on the staggered spin correlation function along the transverse direction to the spontaneous magnetization. A hard-core boson map suggests that asymptotically close …
We investigate the relaxation dynamics of the integrable Lieb-Liniger model of contact-interacting bosons in one dimension following a sudden quench of the collisional interaction strength. The system is initially prepared in its noninteracting ground state and the interaction strength is then abruptly switched to a positive value, corresponding to repulsive interactions between the bosons. We calculate equal-time correlation functions of the nonequilibrium Bose field for small systems of up to five particles via symbolic evaluation of coordinate Bethe-ansatz expressions for operator matrix el…
The one-particle density matrix of the one-dimensional Tonks-Girardeau gas with inhomogeneous density profile is calculated, thanks to a recent observation that relates this system to a two-dimensional conformal field theory in curved space. The result is asymptotically exact in the limit of large particle density and small density variation, and holds for arbitrary trapping potentials. In the particular case of a harmonic trap, we recover a formula obtained by Forrester et al. [Phys. Rev. A 67, 043607 (2003)] from a different method.
The existence and stability of solitonic states in one-dimensional repulsive Bose-Einstein condensates is investigated within a fully many-body framework by considering the limit of infinite repulsion (Tonks-Girardeau gas). A class of stationary, shape-invariant states propagating at constant velocity are explicitly found and compared to the known solution of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation. The typical features attributed to nonlinearity are thus recovered in a purely linear theory, provided the full many-particle physics is correctly accounted for. However, the formation dynamics predicted by …
We study one-dimensional incommensurate bosons with strong repulsive interactions and weak disorder. In analogy to the clean Tonks-Girardeau gas, a Bose-Fermi mapping expresses this problem in terms of disordered free fermions. Thereby many known results apply, in particular for the density-density correlations, the distribution function of the local density of states, and the complete spectral statistics. We also analyze the bosonic momentum distribution, and comment on the experimental observability of these predictions in ultracold atomic gases.
