We show how to implement quantum transport, generate entangled state and achieve spatial entanglement distribution via topological Thouless pumping in one-dimensional disordered lattices. We introduce the on-site disorders to suppress the high-order resonant tunneling (which cause wavepacket dispersion) and realize dispersionless Thouless pumping. The interplay between the on-site disorders and the band topology enables robust unidirectional transport. We also demonstrate how to prepare spatially entangled two-particle NOON state via Hong-Ou-Mandel interference assisted by the Thouless pumping. The quantum entanglement can be well preserved during the distribution between spatially separated sites. Our system paves a way to wide applications of topology in quantum information process.
We derive temporally shaped control pulses for the creation of long-distance entanglement in disordered spin chains. Our approach is based on a time-dependent target functional and a time-local control strategy that permits to ensure that the description of the chain in terms of matrix product states is always valid. With this approach, we demonstrate that long-distance entanglement can be created even for substantially disordered interaction landscapes.
We study the dynamics of a single excitation in an infinite XXZ spin chain, which is launched from the origin. We study the time evolution of the spread of entanglement in the spin chain and obtain an expression for the second order spatial moment of concurrence, about the origin, for both ordered and disordered chains. In this way, we show that a finite central disordered region can lead to sustained superballistic growth in the second order spatial moment of entanglement within the chain.
We study the emergence of bipartite entanglement between a pair of spins weakly connected to the ends of a linear disordered $XY$ spin-1/2 channel. We analyze how their concurrence responds to structural and on-site fluctuations embodied by long-range spatially-correlated sequences. We show that the end-to-end entanglement is very robust against disorder and asymmetries in the channel provided that the degree of correlations are strong enough and both entangling parties are tuned accordingly. Our results offer further alternatives in the design of stable quantum communication protocols via imp…
We use a Heisenberg spin-1/2 chain to investigate how chaos and localization may affect the entanglement of pairs of qubits. To measure how much entangled a pair is, we compute its concurrence, which is then analyzed in the delocalized/localized and in the chaotic/non-chaotic regimes. Our results indicate that chaos reduces entanglement and that entanglement decreases in the region of strong localization. In the transition region from a chaotic to a non-chaotic regime localization increases entanglement. We also show that entanglement is larger for strongly interacting qubits (nearest neighbor…
We show that the entanglement between the internal (spin) and external (position) degrees of freedom of a qubit in a random (dynamically disordered) one-dimensional discrete time quantum random walk (QRW) achieves its maximal possible value asymptotically in the number of steps, outperforming the entanglement attained by using ordered QRW. The disorder is modeled by introducing an extra random aspect to QRW, a classical coin that randomly dictates which quantum coin drives the system's time evolution. We also show that maximal entanglement is achieved independently of the initial state of the …
We show that the entanglement of an initially frequency-entangled photon pair propagating through a disordered scattering medium can be read off in transmission from the coincidence counting rate. The very same quantity also encodes the Thouless time of the medium.
We propose a strategy to generate a many-body entangled state in a collection of randomly placed, dipolarly coupled electronic spins in the solid state. By using coherent control to restrict the evolution into a suitable collective subspace, this method enables the preparation of GHZ-like and spin-squeezed states even for randomly positioned spins, while in addition protecting the entangled states against decoherence. We consider the application of this squeezing method to improve the sensitivity of nanoscale magnetometer based on Nitrogen-Vacancy spin qubits in diamond.
We consider the macroscopic system of free lattice fermions in one dimension assuming that the one-body Hamiltonian of the system is the one dimensional discrete Schrödinger operator with independent identically distributed random potential. We show analytically and numerically that the variance of the entanglement entropy of the segment $[-M,M]$ of the system is bounded away from zero as $M\rightarrow \infty $. This manifests the absence of the selfaveraging property of the entanglement entropy in our model, meaning that in the one-dimensional case the complete description of the entanglement…
The use of quantum entanglement to study condensed matter systems has been flourishing in critical systems and topological phases. Additionally, using real-space entanglement entropies and entanglement spectra one can characterize localized and delocalized phases of disordered fermion systems. Here we instead propose the momentum-space entanglement spectrum as a means of characterizing disordered models. We show that localization in 1D arises from the momentum space entanglement between left and right movers and illustrate our methods using explicit models with spatially correlated disorder th…
We investigate multipartite entanglement dynamics in disordered spin-1/2 lattice models exhibiting a transition from integrability to quantum chaos. Borrowing from the recently introduced generalized entanglement framework, we construct measures for correlations relative to arbitrary local and bi-local spin observables, and show how they naturally signal the crossover between distinct dynamical regimes. In particular, we find that the generation of global entanglement is directly ruled by the local density of states in the short time limit, whereas the asymptotic amount of entanglement is prop…
We investigate how robust is the modified XX spin-1/2 chain of [R. Vieira and G. Rigolin, Phys. Lett. A 382, 2586 (2018)] in transmitting entanglement when several types of disorder and noise are present. First, we consider how deviations about the optimal settings that lead to almost perfect transmission of a maximally entangled two-qubit state affect the entanglement reaching the other side of the chain. Those deviations are modeled by static, dynamic, and fluctuating disorder. We then study how spurious or undesired interactions and external magnetic fields diminish the entanglement transmi…
We propose a tensor network method for investigating strongly disordered systems that is based on an adaptation of entanglement renormalization [G. Vidal, Phys. Rev. Lett. 99, 220405 (2007)]. This method makes use of the strong disorder renormalization group to determine the order in which lattice sites are coarse-grained, which sets the overall structure of the corresponding tensor network ansatz, before optimization using variational energy minimization. Benchmark results from the disordered XXZ model demonstrates that this approach accurately captures ground state entanglement in disordered…
This chapter addresses the question of quantum entanglement in disordered chains, focusing on the von-Neumann and Rényi entropies for three important classes of random systems: Anderson localized, infinite randomness criticality, and many-body localization (MBL). We review previous works, and also present new results for the entanglement entropy of random spin chains at low and high energy.
We prove an upper bound proportional to the surface area for the bipartite entanglement of the ground state and thermal states of harmonic oscillator systems with disorder, as measured by the logarithmic negativity. Our assumptions are satisfied for some standard models that are almost surely gapless in the thermodynamic limit.
We show how to efficiently send an M-partite entangled state along a spin chain of arbitrary size. Specifically, we show how an entangled M-partite W sate can be almost flawlessly transmitted from one end (Alice) to the other end (Bob) of a spin-1/2 chain described by a slightly modified XX model. We achieve an almost perfect transmission without employing external magnetic fields or modulating the coupling constants among the spins of the chain, the two standard approaches used to achieve a good transmission efficiency. Moreover, the protocol here proposed can be used to transform an M-partit…
For disordered harmonic oscillator systems over the $d$-dimensional lattice, we consider the problem of finding the bipartite entanglement of the uniform ensemble of the energy eigenstates associated with a particular number of modes. Such ensemble define a class of mixed, non-Gaussian entangled states that are labeled, by the energy of the system, in an increasing order. We develop a novel approach to find the exact logarithmic negativity of this class of states. We also prove entanglement bounds and demonstrate that the low energy states follow an area law.
Interacting disordered zigzag graphene nanoribbons have fractional charges, are quasi-one-dimensional, and display an exponentially small gap. Our numerical computations showed that the topological entanglement entropy of these systems has a small finite but universal value, independent of the strength of the interaction and the disorder. The result that was obtained for the topological entanglement entropy shows that the disorder-free phase is critical and becomes unstable in the presence of disorder.
We study the non-equilibrium dynamics of a disordered quantum system consisting of harmonic oscillators in a $d$-dimensional lattice. If the system is sufficiently localized, we show that, starting from a broad class of initial product states that are associated with a tiling (decomposition) of the $d$-dimensional lattice, the dynamical evolution of entanglement follows an area law in all times. Moreover, the entanglement bound reveals a dependency on how the subsystems are located within the lattice in dimensions $d\geq 2$. In particular, the entanglement grows with the maximum degree of the …
The properties of the entanglement entropy (EE) in one-dimensional disordered interacting systems are studied. Anderson localization leaves a clear signature on the average EE, as it saturates on length scale exceeding the localization length. This is verified by numerically calculating the EE for an ensemble of disordered realizations using density matrix renormalization group (DMRG). A heuristic expression describing the dependence of the EE on the localization length, which takes into account finite size effects, is proposed. This is used to extract the localization length as function of th…
We investigate the emerging properties of quantum walks with temporal disorder engineered from a binary Markov chain with tailored correlation, $C$, and disorder strength, $r$. We show that when the disorder is weak -- $r \ll 1$ -- the introduction of negative correlation leads to a counter-intuitive higher production of spin-lattice entanglement entropy, $S_e$, than the setting with positive correlation, that is $S_e(-|C|)>S_e(|C|)$. These results show that negatively correlated disorder plays a more important role in quantum entanglement than it has been assumed in the literature.
We find out a few ways to improve the realization of entanglement between the internal (spin) and external (position) degrees of freedom of a quantum particle, through the insertion of disordered time steps along a one-dimensional discrete time quantum walk. The disorder is introduced by a randomly chosen quantum coin obtained from a uniform distribution among infinite quantum coins or only between Hadamard and Fourier coins for all the time steps. We can also decrease the amount of disorder by alternating disordered and ordered time steps along a quantum walk or by establishing a probability …
Non-Hermiticity and dephasing, collaborating in an unusual wave packet dynamics, realizes unconventional entanglement evolution in a disordered, interacting and asymmetric (non-reciprocal) quantum medium. Taking the Hatano-Nelson model as a concrete example, we first consider how wave packet spreads in a non-Hermitian disordered system for demonstraing that it is very different from the Hermitian case. Interestingly, a cascade like wave packet spreading as in the Hermitian case is suppressed in the clean limit and at weak disorder, while it revives in the vicinity of the localization-delocaliz…
Entanglement is a physical resource of a quantum system just like mass, charge or energy. Moreover it is an essential tool for many purposes of nowadays quantum information processing, e.g. quantum teleportation, quantum cryptography or quantum computation. In this work we investigate an extended system of N qubits. In our system a qubit is the absence or presence of an electron at a site of a tight-binding system. Several measures of entanglement between a given qubit and the rest of the system and also the entanglement between two qubits and the rest of the system is calculated in a one-elec…
Quantum systems exist at finite temperatures and are likely to be disordered to some level. Since applications of quantum information often rely on entanglement, we require methods which allow entanglement measures to be calculated in the presence of disorder at non-zero temperatures. We demonstrate how the disorder averaged concurrence can be calculated using thermal many-body perturbation theory. Our technique can also be applied to other entanglement measures. To illustrate, we find the disorder averaged concurrence of an XX spin chain. We find that concurrence can be increased by disorder …
Different regimes of entanglement growth under measurement have been demonstrated for quantum many-body systems, with an entangling phase for low measurement rates and a disentangling phase for high rates (quantum Zeno effect). Here we study entanglement growth on a disordered Bose-Fermi mixture with the bosons playing the role of the effective self-induced measurement for the fermions. Due to the interplay between the disorder and a non-Abelian symmetry, the model features an entanglement growth resonance when the boson-fermion interaction strength is varied. With the addition of a magnetic f…
We investigate disordered one- and two-dimensional Heisenberg spin lattices across a transition from integrability to quantum chaos from both a statistical many-body and a quantum-information perspective. Special emphasis is devoted to quantitatively exploring the interplay between eigenvector statistics, delocalization, and entanglement in the presence of nontrivial symmetries. The implications of basis dependence of state delocalization indicators (such as the number of principal components) is addressed, and a measure of {\em relative delocalization} is proposed in order to robustly charact…
Disordered systems form one of the centrestages of research in many body sciences and lead to a plethora of interesting phenomena and applications. A paradigmatic disordered system consists of an one-dimensional array of quantum spin-1/2 particles, governed by the Heisenberg spin glass Hamiltonian with natural or engineered quenched disordered couplings in an external magnetic field. These systems allow disorder-induced enhancement for bipartite and multipartite observables. Here we show that simultaneous application of independent quenched disorders results in disorder-induced enhancement, wh…
We demonstrate that the magnetic susceptibility of strongly alternating antiferromagnetic spin-1/2 chains is an entanglement witness. Specifically, magnetic susceptibility of copper nitrate (CN) measured in 1963 (Berger et al., Phys. Rev. 132, 1057 (1963)) cannot be described without presence of entanglement. A detailed analysis of the spin correlations in CN as obtained from neutron scattering experiments (Xu et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 84, 4465 (2000)) provides microscopic support for this interpretation. We present a quantitative analysis resulting in the critical temperature of 5K in both, co…
We consider the macroscopic system of free lattice fermions in one dimensions assuming that the one-body Hamiltonian of the system is the one dimensional discrete Schrödinger operator with independent identically distributed random potential. We show that the variance of the entanglement entropy of the segment $[-M,M]$ of the system is bounded away from zero as $% M\rightarrow \infty $. This manifests the absence of the selfaveraging property of the entanglement entropy in our model, meaning that in the one-dimensional case the complete description of the entanglement entropy is provided by it…
We consider different disordered lattice models composed of $M$ linear chains glued together in a star-like manner, and study the scaling of the entanglement between one arm and the rest of the system using a numerical strong-disorder renormalization group method. For all studied models, the random transverse-field Ising model (RTIM), the random XX spin model, and the free-fermion model with random nearest-neighbor hopping terms, the average entanglement entropy is found to increase with the length $L$ of the arms according to the form $S(L)=\frac{c_{\rm eff}}{6}\ln L+const$. For the RTIM and …
We numerically investigate the link between the delocalization-localization transition and entanglement in a disordered long-range hopping model of spinless fermions by studying various static and dynamical quantities. This includes the inverse participation ratio, level-statistics, entanglement entropy and number fluctuations in the subsystem along with quench and wave-packet dynamics. Finite systems show delocalized, quasi-localized and localized phases. The delocalized phase shows strong area-law violation whereas the (quasi)localized phase adheres to (for large subsystems) the strict area …
We investigate quantum information processing and manipulations in disordered systems of ultracold atoms and trapped ions. First, we demonstrate generation of entanglement and local realization of quantum gates in a quantum spin glass system. Entanglement in such systems attains significantly high values, after quenched averaging, and has a stable positive value for arbitrary times. Complex systems with long range interactions, such as ion chains or dipolar atomic gases, can be modeled by neural network Hamiltonians. In such systems, we find the characteristic time of persistence of quenched a…
We consider a macroscopic disordered system of free $d$-dimensional lattice fermions whose one-body Hamiltonian is a Schrödinger operator $H$ with ergodic potential. We assume that the Fermi energy lies in the exponentially localized part of the spectrum of $H$. We prove that if $S_Λ$ is the entanglement entropy of a lattice cube $Λ$ of side length $L$ of the system, then for any $d \ge 1$ the expectation $\mathbf{ E}\{L^{-(d-1)}S_Λ\}$ has a finite limit as $L \to \infty$ and we identify the limit. Next, we prove that for $d=1$ the entanglement entropy admits a well defined asymptotic form for…
Localization is one of the most fundamental interference phenomena caused by randomness, and its universal aspects have been extensively explored from the perspective of one-parameter scaling mainly for static properties. We numerically study dynamics of fermions on disordered onedimensional potentials exhibiting localization and find dynamical one-parameter scaling for surface roughness, which represents particle-number fluctuations at a given lengthscale, and for entanglement entropy when the system is in delocalized phases. This dynamical scaling corresponds to the Family-Vicsek scaling ori…
By means of free fermionic techniques we study the time evolution of the entanglement entropy, S(t), of a block of spins in the random transverse-field Ising chain after a sudden change of the parameters of the Hamiltonian. We consider global quenches, when the parameters are modified uniformly in space, as well as local quenches, when two disconnected blocks are suddenly joined together. For a non-critical final state, the dynamical entanglement entropy is found to approach a finite limiting value for both types of quenches. If the quench is performed to the critical state, the entropy grows …
We utilize the concept of a measurement-induced entanglement transition to analyze the interplay and competition of processes that generate and destroy entanglement in a one-dimensional quantum spin chain evolving under a locally noisy and disordered Hamiltonian. We employ continuous measurements of variable strength to induce a transition from volume to area-law scaling of the steady-state entanglement entropy. While static background disorder systematically reduces the critical measurement strength, this critical value depends non-monotonically on the strength of non-static noise. According …
We study theoretically and numerically the entanglement entropy of the $d$-dimensional free fermions whose one body Hamiltonian is the Anderson model. Using basic facts of the exponential Anderson localization, we show first that the disorder averaged entanglement entropy $\langle S_Λ\rangle$ of the $d$ dimension cube $Λ$ of side length $l$ admits the area law scaling $\langle S_Λ\rangle \sim l^{(d-1)}, \ l \gg 1$ even in the gapless case, thereby manifesting the area law in the mean for our model. For $d=1$ and $l\gg 1$ we obtain then asymptotic bounds for the entanglement entropy of typical …
We investigate the influence of density, interaction and harmonic confinement on the superfluid to insulator transition (SIT) in disordered fermionic superfluids described by the one-dimensional Hubbard model. We quantify the ground-state single-site entanglement via density-functional theory calculations of the linear entropy. We analyze the critical concentration $C_C$ at which the fully-localized state $-$ a special type of localization, with null entanglement $-$ emerges. We find that $C_C$ is independent on the interaction, but demands a minimum disorder strength to occur. We then derive …
We show that the numerical strong disorder renormalization group algorithm (SDRG) of Hikihara et. al. [Phys. Rev. B 60, 12116 (1999)] for the one-dimensional disordered Heisenberg model naturally describes a tree tensor network (TTN) with an irregular structure defined by the strength of the couplings. Employing the holographic interpretation of the TTN in Hilbert space, we compute expectation values, correlation functions and the entanglement entropy using the geometrical properties of the TTN. We find that the disorder averaged spin-spin correlation scales with the average path length throug…
We study the synchronization of dissipatively-coupled van der Pol oscillators in the quantum limit, when each oscillator is near its quantum ground state. Two quantum oscillators with different frequencies exhibit an entanglement tongue, which is the quantum analogue of an Arnold tongue. It means that the oscillators are entangled in steady state when the coupling strength is greater than a critical value, and the critical coupling increases with detuning. An ensemble of many oscillators with random frequencies still exhibits a synchronization phase transition in the quantum limit, and we anal…
The non-equilibrium dynamics of disordered many-body quantum systems after a global quantum quench unveils important insights about the competition between interactions and disorder, yielding in particular an insightful perspective on many body localization (MBL). Still, the experimentally relevant effect of bond randomness in long-range interacting spin chains on the quantum quench dynamics have so far not been investigated. In this letter, we examine the entanglement entropy growth after a global quench in a quantum spin chain with randomly placed spins and long-range tunable interactions de…
How much information is stored in the ground-state of a system without \emph{any symmetry} and how can we extract it? This question is investigated by analyzing the behavior of a topological Chern Insulator (CI) in the presence of disorder, with a focus on its entanglement spectrum (EtS) constructed from the ground state. For systems with symmetries, the EtS was shown to contain explicit information revealed by sorting the EtS against the conserved quantum numbers. In the absence of any symmetry, we demonstrate that statistical methods such as the level statistics of the EtS can be equally ins…
We use entanglement to track the superfluid-insulator transition (SIT) in disordered fermionic superfluids described by the one-dimensional Hubbard model. Entanglement is found to have remarkable signatures of the SIT driven by i) the disorder strength $V$, ii) the concentration of impurities $C$ and iii) the particle density $n$. Our results reveal the absence of a critical potential intensity on the SIT driven by $V$, i.e. any small $V$ suffices to decrease considerably the degree of entanglement: it drops $\sim 50\%$ for $V=-0.25t$. We also find that entanglement is non-monotonic with the c…
The ground state entanglement entropy between block of sites in the random Ising chain is studied by means of the Von Neumann entropy. We show that in presence of strong correlations between the disordered couplings and local magnetic fields the entanglement increases and becomes larger than in the ordered case. The different behavior with respect to the uncorrelated disordered model is due to the drastic change of the ground state properties. The same result holds also for the random 3-state quantum Potts model.
We study the signatures of disorder in the production of orbital electron entanglement in quantum wires. Disordered entanglers suffer the effects of localization of the electron wave function and random fluctuations in the entanglement production. This manifests in the statistics of the concurrence, a measure of the produced two-qubit entanglement. We calculate the concurrence distribution as a function of the disorder strength within a random-matrix approach. We also identify significant constraints on the entanglement production as a consequence of the breaking/preservation of time-reversal …
The transition between many-body localized states and the delocalized thermal states is an eigen-state phase transition at finite energy density outside the scope of conventional quantum statistical mechanics. In this work we investigate the properties of the transition by studying the behavior of the entanglement entropy of a subsystem of size $L_A$ in a system of size $L > L_A$ near the critical regime of the many-body localization transition. The many-body eigenstates are obtained by exact diagonalization of a disordered quantum spin chain under twisted boundary conditions to reduce the fin…
Classical correlations of ground states typically decay exponentially and polynomially, respectively for gapped and gapless short-ranged quantum spin systems. In such systems, entanglement decays exponentially even at the quantum critical points. However, quantum discord, an information-theoretic quantum correlation measure, survives long lattice distances. We investigate the effects of quenched disorder on quantum correlation lengths of quenched averaged entanglement and quantum discord, in the anisotropic XY and XYZ spin glass and random field chains. We find that there is virtually neither …
We develop an approach to characterize excited states of disordered many-body systems using spatially resolved structures of entanglement. We show that the behavior of the mutual information (MI) between two parties of a many-body system can signal a qualitative difference between thermal and localized phases -- MI is finite in insulators while it approaches zero in the thermodynamic limit in the ergodic phase. Related quantities, such as the recently introduced Codification Volume (CV), are shown to be suitable to quantify the correlation length of the system. These ideas are illustrated usin…
We predict topologically robust zero energy bulk states in a disordered tight binding lattice. We explore a new kind of order and discuss that zero energy states exist in a system iff its Hamiltonian is noninvertible. We show that they are robust against any kind of disorder as long as the disordered Hamiltonian is noninvertible, too.
We discuss the scaling of entanglement entropy in the random singlet phase (RSP) of disordered quantum magnetic chains of general spin-S. Through an analysis of the general structure of the RSP, we show that the entanglement entropy scales logarithmically with the size of a block and we provide a closed expression for this scaling. This result is applicable for arbitrary quantum spin chains in the RSP, being dependent only on the magnitude S of the spin. Remarkably, the logarithmic scaling holds for the disordered chain even if the pure chain with no disorder does not exhibit conformal invaria…
We investigate the trends of information backflow associated with the dynamics of a sub-part of a disordered spin-1/2 transverse field Heisenberg chain for different regimes of the Hamiltonian. Towards this aim, the decay profile of bipartite entanglement shared between a probe-qubit and a system-qubit (sub-part) of the chain is monitored in time. A clear shift in the trends of the decay profiles of the bipartite entanglement from monotonic in the low-disorder limit to non-monotonic in the moderately large disorder limit occurs due to strong information backflow from the environment (complemen…
