We consider the first Robin eigenvalue $ł_p(M,\a)$ for the $p$-Laplacian on a compact Riemannian manifold $M$ with nonempty smooth boundary, with $\a \in \R$ being the Robin parameter. Firstly, we prove eigenvalue comparison theorems of Cheng type for $ł_p(M,\a)$. Secondly, when $\a>0$ we establish sharp lower bound of $ł_p(M,\a)$ in terms of dimension, inradius, Ricci curvature lower bound and boundary mean curvature lower bound, via comparison with an associated one-dimensional eigenvalue problem. The lower bound becomes an upper bound when $\a<0$. Our results cover corresponding comparison theorems for the first Dirichlet eigenvalue of the $p$-Laplacian when letting $\a \to +\infty$.
We study the Robin eigenvalue problem for the Laplace-Beltrami operator on Riemannian manifolds. Our first result is a comparison theorem for the second Robin eigenvalue on geodesic balls in manifolds whose sectional curvatures are bounded from above. Our second result asserts that geodesic balls in nonpositively curved space forms maximize the second Robin eigenvalue among bounded domains of the same volume.
We study the Robin Laplacian in a domain with two corners of the same opening, and we calculate the asymptotics of the two lowest eigenvalues as the distance between the corners increases to infinity.
In this paper we establish a Hardy inequality for Laplace operators with Robin boundary conditions. For convex domains, in particular, we show explicitly how the corresponding Hardy weight depends on the coefficient of the Robin boundary conditions. We also study several extensions to non-convex and unbounded domains.
A generalization of Robin boundary conditions leading to self-adjoint operators is developed for the second derivative operator on metric graphs with compact completion and totally disconnected boundary. Harmonic functions and their properties play an essential role.
The aim of this paper is twofold: First, we characterize an essentially optimal class of boundary operators $Θ$ which give rise to self-adjoint Laplacians $-Δ_{Θ, Ω}$ in $L^2(Ω; d^n x)$ with (nonlocal and local) Robin-type boundary conditions on bounded Lipschitz domains $Ω\subset\bbR^n$, $n\in\bbN$, $n\geq 2$. Second, we extend Friedlander's inequalities between Neumann and Dirichlet Laplacian eigenvalues to those between nonlocal Robin and Dirichlet Laplacian eigenvalues associated with bounded Lipschitz domains $Ω$, following an approach introduced by Filonov for this type of problems.
We prove that the optimal cluster problem for the sum of the first Robin eigenvalue of the Laplacian, in the limit of a large number of convex cells, is asymptotically solved by (the Cheeger sets of) the honeycomb of regular hexagons. The same result is established for the Robin torsional rigidity.
In this paper we study the best constant in a Hardy inequality for the p-Laplace operator on convex domains with Robin boundary conditions. We show, in particular, that the best constant equals $((p-1)/p)^p$ whenever Dirichlet boundary conditions are imposed on a subset of the boundary of non-zero measure. We also discuss some generalizations to non-convex domains.
We discuss several geometric conditions guaranteeing the finiteness or the infiniteness of the discrete spectrum for Robin Laplacians on conical domains.
We study some properties of Laplacian eigenvalues with negative Robin boundary conditions. We will show some monotonicity properties on annuli of the first eigenvalue by means of shape optimization techniques.
The difference of the resolvents of two Laplacians on a half-space subject to Robin boundary conditions is studied. In general this difference is not compact, but it will be shown that it is compact and even belongs to some Schatten-von-Neumann class, if the coefficients in the boundary condition are sufficiently close to each other in a proper sense. In certain cases the resolvent difference is shown to belong even to the same Schatten-von Neumann class as it is known for the resolvent difference of two Robin Laplacians on a domain with a compact boundary.
We show that eigenvalues of the Robin Laplacian with a positive boundary parameter $α$ on rectangles and unions of rectangtes satisfy Pólya-type inequalities, albeit with an exponent smaller than that of the corresponding Weyl asympotics for a fixed domain. We determine the optimal exponents in either case, showing that they are different in the two situations. Our approach to proving these results includes a characterisation of the corresponding extremal domains for the $k$th eigenvalue in regions of the $(k,α)$-plane.
In this paper, by using Schwarz rearrangement and isoperimetric inequalities, we prove comparison results for the solutions of Poisson equations on complete Riemannian manifolds with $Ric\geq (n-1)κ$, $\, κ\geq 0$, which extends the results in \cite{ANT-Talenti-a}. Furthermore, as applications of our comparison results, we obtain the Saint-Venant inequality and Bossel-Daners inequality for Robin Laplacian.
The first two eigenvalues of the Robin Laplacian are investigated along with their gap and ratio. Conjectures by various authors for arbitrary domains are supported here by new results for rectangular boxes. Results for rectangular domains include that: the square minimizes the first eigenvalue among rectangles under area normalization, when the Robin parameter $α\in \mathbb{R}$ is scaled by perimeter; that the square maximizes the second eigenvalue for a sharp range of $α$-values; that the line segment minimizes the Robin spectral gap under diameter normalization for each $α\in \mathbb{R}$; a…
We consider the magnetic Robin Laplacian with a negative boundary parameter. Among a certain class of domains, we prove that the disk maximizes the ground state energy under the fixed perimeter constraint provided that the magnetic field is of moderate strength. This class of domains includes, in particular, all domains that are contained upon translations in the disk of the same perimeter and all convex centrally symmetric domains.
We study convergence modes as well as their respective rates for the resolvent difference of Robin and Dirichlet Laplacian on bounded smooth domains in the large coupling limit. Asymptotic expansions for the resolvent, the eigenprojections and the eigenvalues of the Robin Laplacian are performed. Finally we apply our results to the case of the unit disc.
In this work we prove the non-degeneracy of the critical points of the Robin function for the Fractional Laplacian under symmetry and convexity assumptions on the domain $Ω$. This work extends to the fractional setting the results of M. Grossi concerning the classical Laplace operator.
In this paper, we prove an upper bound for the first Robin eigenvalue of the $p$-Laplacian with a positive boundary parameter and a quantitative version of the reverse Faber-Krahn type inequality for the first Robin eigenvalue of the $p$-Laplacian with negative boundary parameter, among convex sets with prescribed perimeter. The proofs are based on a comparison argument obtained by means of inner sets, introduced by Payne, Weimberger and Polya.
We prove the existence of an optimal partition for the multiphase shape optimization problem which consists in minimizing the sum of the first Robin Laplacian eigenvalue of $k$ mutually disjoint {\it open} sets which have a $\mathcal H ^ {d-1}$-countably rectifiable boundary and are contained into a given box $D$ in $R^d$
In this note we investigate the asymptotic behaviour of the $s$-numbers of the resolvent difference of two generalized self-adjoint, maximal dissipative or maximal accumulative Robin Laplacians on a bounded domain $Ω$ with smooth boundary $\partialΩ$. For this we apply the recently introduced abstract notion of quasi boundary triples and Weyl functions from extension theory of symmetric operators together with Krein type resolvent formulae and well-known eigenvalue asymptotics of the Laplace-Beltrami operator on $\partialΩ$. It will be shown that the resolvent difference of two generalized Rob…
In this paper we study the $p$-Poisson equation with Robin boundary conditions, where the Robin parameter is a function. By means of some weighted isoperimetric inequalities, we provide various sharp bounds for the solutions to the problems under consideration. We also derive a Faber-Krahn-type inequality.
We prove a quantitative Faber-Krahn inequality for the first eigenvalue of the Laplace operator with Robin boundary conditions. The asymmetry term involves the square power of the Fraenkel asymmetry, multiplied by a constant depending on the Robin parameter, the dimension of the space and the measure of the set.
The eigenvalue problem for the p-Laplace operator with Robin boundary condition is considered in this paper. A Faber-Krahn type inequality is proved. More precisely, it is shown that amongst all the domains of fixed volume, the ball has the smallest first eigenvalue.
For smooth bounded open sets in euclidean space, we construct corresponding contractive linear extension operators for the space of continuous functions which preserve regularity of functions in the domain of the Robin Laplacian. We also prove a Trotter-like approximation for the semigroup generated by the Laplacian subject to Robin boundary conditions in terms of these extension operators. The limiting case of Dirichlet boundary conditions is treated separately.
The existence of three smooth solutions, one negative, one positive, and one nodal, to a homogeneous Robin problem with $p$-Laplacian and Carathéodory reaction is established. No sub-critical growth condition is taken on. Proofs exploit variational as well as truncation techniques. The case $p=2$ is separately examined, obtaining a further nodal solution via Morse's theory.
In this paper we consider PDE's problems involving the anisotropic Laplacian operator, with Robin boundary conditions. By means of Talenti techniques, widely used in the last decades, we prove a comparison result between the solutions of the above-mentioned problems and the solutions of the symmetrized ones. As a consequence of these results, a Bossel-Daners type inequality can be shown in dimension 2.
We consider the problem of geometric optimization of the lowest eigenvalue for the Laplacian on a compact, simply-connected two-dimensional manifold with boundary subject to an attractive Robin boundary condition. We prove that in the sub-class of manifolds with the Gauss curvature bounded from above by a constant $K_\circ \ge 0$ and under the constraint of fixed perimeter, the geodesic disk of constant curvature $K_\circ$ maximizes the lowest Robin eigenvalue. In the same geometric setting, it is proved that the spectral isoperimetric inequality holds for the lowest eigenvalue of the Dirichle…
We consider a superlinear perturbation of the eigenvalue problem for the Robin Laplacian plus an indefinite and unbounded potential. Using variational tools and critical groups, we show that when $λ$ is close to a nonprincipal eigenvalue, then the problem has seven nontrivial solutions. We provide sign information for six of them.
This document consists of two papers, both submitted, and supplementary material. The submitted papers are here given as Parts I and II. Part I establishes results, used in Part II, 'on functions and inverses, both positive, decreasing and convex'. Part II uses results from Part I to extablish 'inequalities for the fundamental Robin eigenvalue for the Laplacian on N-dimensional boxes'
We prove two bounds for the first Robin eigenvalue of the Finsler Laplacian with negative boundary parameter in the planar case. In the constant area problem, we show that the Wulff shape is the maximizer only for values which are close to 0 of the boundary parameter and, in the fixed perimeter case, that the Wulff shape maximizes the first eigenvalue for all values of the parameter.
We consider a nonlinear Robin problems driven by the $p$-Laplacian plus an indefinite potential. The reaction is resonant with respect to a variational eigenvalue. For the principal eigenvalue we assume strong resonance. Using variational tools and critical groups we prove existence and multiplicity theorems.
In this paper, we prove two results for the Robin eigenvalue problem. One is an upper bound for the ratio of the first two eigenvalues which can be used to recover the PPW conjecture proved by M.S.Ashbaugh and R.D.Benguria, the other is a reverse Holder inequality for the first eigenfunction which is a natural generalization of Chiti's reverse Holder inequality for the first eigenfunction of Dirichlet Laplacian.
(Version 3) We study the problem of finding functions, defined within and on an ellipse, whose Laplacian is -1 and which satisfy a homogeneous Robin boundary condition on the ellipse. The parameter in the Robin condition is denoted by beta. The general solution and various asymptotic approximations are obtained. The integral of the solution over the ellipse, denoted by Q, is a quantity of interest in some physical applications. The dependence of Q on beta and the ellipse geometry is found. Several methods are used.
This paper is devoted to the asymptotic analysis of the eigenvalues of the Laplace operator with a strong magnetic field and Robin boundary condition on a smooth planar domain and with a negative boundary parameter. We study the singular limit when the Robin parameter tends to infinity which is equivalent to a semi-classical limit involving a small positive semi-classical parameter. The main result is a comparison between the spectrum of the Robin Laplacian with an effective operator defined on the boundary of the domain via the Born-Oppenheimer approximation. More precisely, the low-lying eig…
Let $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^2$ be the exterior of a convex polygon whose side lengths are $\ell_1,...,\ell_M$. For $α>0$, let $H^Ω_α$ denote the Laplacian in $Ω$, $u\mapsto -Δu$, with the Robin boundary conditions $\partial u/\partialν=αu$, where $ν$ is the exterior unit normal at the boundary of $Ω$. We show that, for any fixed $m\in\mathbb{N}$, the $m$th eigenvalue $E^Ω_m(α)$ of $H^Ω_α$ behaves as \[ E^Ω_m(α)=-α^2+μ^D_m +\mathcal{O}\Big(\dfrac{1}{\sqrtα}\Big) \quad {as $α$ tends to $+\infty$}, \] where $μ^D_m$ stands for the $m$th eigenvalue of the operator $D_1\oplus...\oplus D_M$ and $D_n$ de…
By developing the method of multipliers, we establish sufficient conditions which guarantee the total absence of eigenvalues of the Laplacian in the half-space, subject to variable complex Robin boundary conditions. As a further application of this technique, uniform resolvent estimates are derived under the same assumptions on the potential. Some of the results are new even in the self-adjoint setting, where we obtain quantum-mechanically natural conditions.
In this paper we study double phase problems with nonlinear boundary condition and gradient dependence. Under quite general assumptions we prove existence results for such problems where the perturbations satisfy a suitable behavior in the origin and at infinity. Our proofs make use of variational tools, truncation techniques and comparison methods. The existence of the obtained solutions depends on the first eigenvalues of the Robin and Steklov eigenvalue problems for the $p$-Laplacian.
Let Ωbe a bounded connected, open set of \R^n with Lipschitz boundary. Let F be a suitable norm in \R^n and let Δ_F u be the so-colled Finsler Laplacian. In this paper we prove two inequalities for the first eigenvalue of Δ_F with Robin boundary conditions involving a positive function β. As a consequence of our result we obtain the asymptotic behavior of this eigenvalue when βis a positive constant which goes to zero.
We consider a nonlinear Robin problem driven by the $p$-Laplacian plus an indefinite potential. The reaction term is of arbitrary growth and only conditions near zero are imposed. Using critical point theory together with suitable truncation and perturbation techniques and comparison principles, we show that the problem admits a sequence of distinct smooth nodal solutions converging to zero in $C^1(\overlineΩ)$.
We study a nonlinear boundary value problem driven by the $p$-Laplacian plus an indefinite potential with Robin boundary condition. The reaction term is a Carathéodory function which is asymptotically resonant at $\pm\infty$ with respect to a nonprincipal Ljusternik-Schnirelmann eigenvalue. Using variational methods, together with Morse theory and truncation-perturbation techniques, we show that the problem has at least three nontrivial smooth solutions, two of which have a fixed sign.
Let $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^n$ be an open, bounded and Lipschitz set. We consider the Poisson problem for the $p-$Laplace operator associated to $Ω$ with Robin boundary conditions. In this setting, we study the equality case in the Talenti-type comparison stated in \cite{AGM}. We prove that the equality is achieved only if $Ω$ is a ball and both the function $u$ and the right hand side $f$ of the Poisson equation are radial.
We study the low-lying eigenvalues of the semiclassical Robin Laplacian in a smooth planar domain symmetric with respect to an axis. In the case when the curvature of the boundary of the domain attains its maximum at exactly two points away from the axis of symmetry, we establish an explicit asymptotic formula for the splitting of the first two eigenvalues. This is a rigorous derivation of the semiclassical tunneling effect induced by the domain's geometry. Our approach is close to the Born-Oppenheimer one and yields, as a byproduct, a Weyl formula of independent interest.
In this paper we prove that the ball maximizes the first eigenvalue of the Robin Laplacian operator with negative boundary parameter, among all convex sets of \mathbb{R}^n with prescribed perimeter. The key of the proof is a dearrangement procedure of the first eigenfunction of the ball on the level sets of the distance function to the boundary of the convex set, which controls the boundary and the volume energies of the Rayleigh quotient.
This paper is devoted to the asymptotic analysis of the optimal Sobolev constants in the semiclassical limit and in any dimension. We combine semiclassical arguments and concentration-compactness estimates to tackle the case when an electromagnetic field is added as well as a smooth boundary carrying a Robin condition. As a byproduct of the semiclassical strategy, we also get exponentially weighted localization estimates of the minimizers.
We consider the Robin Laplacian in the domains $Ω$ and $Ω^\varepsilon$, $\varepsilon >0$, with sharp and blunted cusps, respectively. Assuming that the Robin coefficient $a$ is large enough, the spectrum of the problem in $Ω$ is known to be residual and to cover the whole complex plane, but on the contrary, the spectrum in the Lipschitz domain $Ω^\varepsilon$ is discrete. However, our results reveal the strange behavior of the discrete spectrum as the blunting parameter $\varepsilon$ tends to 0: we construct asymptotic forms of the eigenvalues and detect families of "hardly movable" and "plumm…
Let $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^n$ be a bounded $C^1$ domain and $p>1$. For $α>0$, define the quantity \[ Λ(α)=\inf_{u\in W^{1,p}(Ω),\, u\not\equiv 0} \Big(\int_Ω|\nabla u|^p\,\mathrm{d}x - α\int_{\partialΩ} |u|^p \,\mathrm{d} s\Big)\Big/ \int_Ω|u|^p\,\mathrm{d} x \] with $\mathrm{d} s$ being the hypersurface measure, which is the lowest eigenvalue of the $p$-laplacian in $Ω$ with a non-linear $α$-dependent Robin boundary condition. We show the asymptotics $Λ(α) =(1-p)α^{p/(p-1)}+o(α^{p/(p-1)})$ as $α$ tends to $+\infty$. The result was only known for the linear case $p=2$ or under stronger smoothnes…
We construct a multiply connected domain in $\mathbb{R}^2$ for which the second eigenfunction of the Laplacian with Robin boundary conditions has an interior nodal line. In the process, we adapt a bound of Donnelly-Fefferman type to obtain a uniform estimate on the size of the nodal sets of a sequence of solutions to a certain class of elliptic equations in the interior of a sequence of domains, which does not depend directly on any boundary behaviour. This also gives a new proof of the nodal line property of the example in the Dirichlet case.
In this paper, we prove that it is always possible to define a realization of the Laplacian $Δ_{κ,θ}$ on $L^2(Ω)$ subject to nonlocal Robin boundary conditions with general jump measures on arbitrary open subsets of $\mathbb R^N$. This is made possible by using a capacity approach to define admissible pair of measures $(κ,θ)$ that allows the associated form $\mathcal E_{κ,θ}$ to be closable. The nonlocal Robin Laplacian $Δ_{κ,θ}$ generates a sub-Markovian $C_0-$semigroup on $L^2(Ω)$ which is not dominated by Neumann Laplacian semigroup unless the jump measure $θ$ vanishes. Finally, the converg…
Let $\varepsilon>0$ be a small parameter. We consider the domain $Ω_\varepsilon:=Ω\setminus D_\varepsilon$, where $Ω$ is an open domain in $\mathbb{R}^n$, and $D_\varepsilon$ is a family of small balls of the radius $d_\varepsilon=o(\varepsilon)$ distributed periodically with period $\varepsilon$. Let $Δ_\varepsilon$ be the Laplace operator in $Ω_\varepsilon$ subject to the Robin condition ${\partial u\over \partial n}+γ_\varepsilon u = 0$ with $γ_\varepsilon\ge 0$ on the boundary of the holes and the Dirichlet condition on the exterior boundary. Kaizu (1985, 1989) and Brillard (1988) have sho…
We consider the problem of minimising the $k$th eigenvalue, $k \geq 2$, of the ($p$-)Laplacian with Robin boundary conditions with respect to all domains in $\mathbb{R}^N$ of given volume $M$. When $k=2$, we prove that the second eigenvalue of the $p$-Laplacian is minimised by the domain consisting of the disjoint union of two balls of equal volume, and that this is the unique domain with this property. For $p=2$ and $k \geq 3$, we prove that in many cases a minimiser cannot be independent of the value of the constant $α$ in the boundary condition, or equivalently of the volume $M$. We obtain …
We study the spectrum of the Robin Laplacian with a complex Robin parameter $α$ on a bounded Lipschitz domain $Ω$. We start by establishing a number of properties of the corresponding operator, such as generation properties, local analytic dependence of the eigenvalues and eigenspaces on $α\in \mathbb C$, and basis properties of the eigenfunctions. Our focus, however, is on bounds and asymptotics for the eigenvalues as functions of $α$: we start by providing estimates on the numerical range of the associated operator, which lead to new eigenvalue bounds even in the case $α\in \mathbb R$. For t…
