We discuss the status of resummation of large logarithmic contributions to groomed event shapes of hadronic final states in electron-positron annihilation. We identify the missing ingredients needed for next-to-next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic (NNNLL) resummation of the mMDT groomed jet mass in $e^+e^-$ collisions: the low-scale collinear-soft constants at two-loop accuracy, $c_{S_c}^{(2)}$, and the three-loop non-cusp anomalous dimension of the global soft function, $γ_S^{(2)}$. We present a method for extracting those constants using fixed-order codes: the EVENT2 program to obtain the color coefficients of $c_{S_c}^{(2)}$, and MCCSM for extracting $γ_S^{(2)}$. We present all necessary formulae for resummation of the mMDT groomed heavy jet mass distribution at NNNLL accuracy.
We present predictions of the distribution of groomed heavy jet mass in electron-positron collisions at the next-to-next-to-leading order accuracy matched with the resummation of large logarithms to next-to-next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy. Resummation at this accuracy is possible through extraction of necessary two-loop constants and three-loop anomalous dimensions from fixed-order codes.
We present results for the soft drop groomed jet radius $R_g$ at next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy. The radius of a groomed jet which corresponds to the angle between the two branches passing the soft drop criterion is one of the characteristic observables relevant for the precise understanding of groomed jet substructure. We establish a factorization formalism that allows for the resummation of all relevant large logarithms, which is based on demonstrating the all order equivalence to a jet veto in the region between the boundaries of the groomed and ungroomed jet. Non-global logarithms in…
We consider the factorized groomed jet mass distribution in inclusive jet processes using modified mass drop tagger (mMDT), corresponding to soft drop with the angular exponent $β=0$. A grooming procedure is implemented rather than tagging in the sense that grooming always returns a groomed jet, while tagging dose not return a jet when a single particle remains after tagging. We find that the grooming procedure makes the jet mass distribution infrared safe and only ultraviolet divergences appear in each factorized part. The groomed jet mass distributions are investigated in a wide range of the…
We study jet mass distributions measured in the single inclusive jet production in proton-proton collisions $pp\to \text{jet}+X$ at the LHC. We consider both standard ungroomed jets as well as soft drop groomed jets. Within the Soft Collinear Effective Theory (SCET), we establish QCD factorization theorems for both cases and we study their relation. The developed framework allows for the joint resummation of several classes of logarithmic corrections to all orders in the strong coupling constant. For the ungroomed case, we resum logarithms in the jet radius parameter and in the small jet mass.…
We study the link between parton dynamics in the collinear limit and the logarithmically enhanced terms of the groomed jet mass distribution, for jets groomed with the modified mass-drop tagger (mMDT). While the leading-logarithmic (LL) result is linked to collinear evolution with leading-order splitting kernels, here we derive the NLL structure directly from triple-collinear splitting kernels. The calculation we present is a fixed-order calculation in the triple-collinear limit, independent of resummation ingredients and methods. It therefore constitutes a powerful cross-check of the NLL resu…
We present the transverse momentum spectrum of groomed jets in di-jet events for $e^+e^-$ collisions and semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering (SIDIS). The jets are groomed using a soft-drop grooming algorithm which helps in mitigating effects of non-global logarithms and underlying event. At the same time, by reducing the final state hadronization effects, it provides a clean access to the non-perturbative part of the evolution of transverse momentum dependent (TMD) distributions. In SIDIS experiments we look at the transverse momentum of the groomed jet measured w.r.t. the incoming hadron…
Jet grooming has emerged as a necessary and powerful tool in a precision jet physics program. In this paper, we present three results on jet grooming in perturbation theory, focusing on heavy jet mass in $e^+e^-\to$ hadrons collisions, groomed with the modified mass drop tagger. First, we calculate the analytic cross section at leading-order. Second, using the leading-order result and numerical results through next-to-next-to-leading order, we show that cusps in the distribution on the interior of phase space at leading-order are softened at higher orders. Finally, using analytic and numerical…
Observables which distinguish boosted topologies from QCD jets are playing an increasingly important role at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). These observables are often used in conjunction with jet grooming algorithms, which reduce contamination from both theoretical and experimental sources. In this paper we derive factorization formulae for groomed multi-prong substructure observables, focusing in particular on the groomed $D_2$ observable, which is used to identify boosted hadronic decays of electroweak bosons at the LHC. Our factorization formulae allow systematically improvable calculati…
Measurements of jet substructure in heavy-ion collisions may provide key insight to the nature of jet quenching in the quark-gluon plasma. Jet grooming techniques from high-energy physics have been applied to heavy-ion collisions in order to isolate theoretically controlled jet observables and explore possible modification to the hard substructure of jets. However, the grooming algorithms used have not been tailored to the unique considerations of heavy-ion collisions, in particular to the experimental challenge of reconstructing jets in the presence of a large underlying event. We report a se…
We present a resummation valid to next-to leading logarithmic accuracy of the non-global and clustering effects in groomed (with modified mass drop tagger) multi-pronged observables. These effects are universal in the sense that they depend only on the flavor structure of the $1\to 2$ splitting forming the multi-pronged subjets and the opening angle of the splitting, being insensitive to the underlying hard process or underlying event. The differential spectra with and without the non-global and clustering effects are presented, and the change in the spectra is found to be small.
For the "stealth bosons" $S$, light boosted particles with a decay $S \to A A \to q \bar q q \bar q$ into four quarks and reconstructed as a single fat jet, the groomed jet mass has a strong correlation with groomed jet substructure variables. Consequently, the jet mass distribution is strongly affected by the jet substructure selection cuts when applied on the groomed jet. We illustrate this fact by recasting a CMS search for low-mass dijet resonances and show a few representative examples. The mass distributions exhibit narrow and wide bumps at several locations in the 100 - 300 GeV range, b…
Jet angularities are a class of jet substructure observables where a continuous parameter is introduced in order to interpolate between different classic observables such as the jet mass and jet broadening. We consider jet angularities measured on an inclusive jet sample at the LHC where the soft drop grooming procedure is applied in order to remove soft contaminations from the jets. The soft drop algorithm allows for a precise comparison between theory and data and could be used to extract the QCD strong coupling constant $α_s$ from jet substructure data in the future. We develop a framework …
We develop a factorization framework to compute the double differential cross section in soft drop groomed jet mass and groomed jet radius. We describe the effective theories in the large, intermediate, and small groomed jet radius regions defined by the interplay of the jet mass and the groomed jet radius measurement. As an application we present the NLL$'$ results for the perturbative moments that are related to the coefficients $C_1$ and $C_2$ that specify the leading hadronization corrections up to three universal parameters. We compare our results with Monte Carlo simulations and a calcul…
Jet grooming algorithms are widely used in experimental analyses at hadron colliders to remove contaminating radiation from within jets. While the algorithms perform a great service to the experiments, their intricate algorithmic structure and multiple parameters has frustrated precision theoretic understanding. In this paper, we demonstrate that one particular groomer called soft drop actually makes precision jet substructure easier. In particular, we derive a factorization formula for a large class of soft drop jet substructure observables, including jet mass. The essential observation that …
We propose an observable which involves measuring the properties (transverse momentum $p_{h\perp}$ and energy fraction $z_h$) of an identified hadron inside a groomed jet. The jet is identified with an anti-kT/CA algorithm and is groomed by implementing the modified mass drop procedure with an energy cut-off parameter $z_{cut}$. The transverse momentum of the hadron inside the jet is measured with respect to the groomed jet axis. We obtain a factorization theorem in the framework of Soft Collinear Effective Theory (SCET), to define a Transverse Momentum Dependent Fragmenting Jet Function (TMDF…
We argue that contemporary jet substructure techniques might facilitate a more direct measurement of hard medium-induced gluon bremsstrahlung in heavy-ion collisions, and focus specifically on the "soft drop declustering" procedure that singles out the two leading jet substructures. Assuming coherent jet energy loss, we find an enhancement of the distribution of the energy fractions shared by the two substructures at small subjet energy caused by hard medium-induced gluon radiation. Departures from this approximation are discussed, in particular, the effects of colour decoherence and the conta…
Jet grooming has emerged as a necessary and vital tool for mitigating contamination radiation in jets. The additional restrictions on emissions imposed by the groomer can result in non-smooth behavior of resulting fixed-order distributions of observables measured on groomed jets. As a concrete example, we study the cusp in the hemisphere mass distribution of $e^+e^-\to$ hadrons events groomed with soft drop. We identify the leading emissions that contribute in the region about the cusp and formulate an all-orders factorization theorem that describes how the cusp is resolved through arbitrary s…
We present the transverse momentum spectrum for a heavy hadron at threshold in a groomed jet initiated by a heavy quark. The cross section is doubly differential in the energy fraction of an identified heavy hadron in the jet and its transverse momentum measured with respect to the groomed (recoil free) jet axis. The grooming is implemented using a soft-drop grooming algorithm and helps us in mitigating the effects of Non-Global logarithms and pile up. For the particular case of a $B$ meson, we identify two distinct regimes of the transverse momentum spectrum and develop an EFT within the form…
We explore the ability of a recently proposed jet substructure technique, Dynamical Grooming, to pin down the properties of the Quark-Gluon Plasma formed in ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collisions. In particular, we compute, both analytically and via Monte-Carlo simulations, the opening angle $θ_g$ of the hardest splitting in the jet as defined by Dynamical Grooming. Our calculation, grounded in perturbative QCD, accounts for the factorization in time between vacuum-like and medium-induced processes in the double logarithmic approximation. We observe that the dominating scale in the $θ_g$-dist…
We investigate the medium modifications of momentum splitting fraction and groomed jet radius with both dynamical grooming and soft drop algorithms in heavy-ion collisions. In the calculation, the partonic spectrum of initial hard scattering in p+p collisions is provided by the event generator PYTHIA 8, and the energy loss of fast parton traversing in a hot/dense QCD medium is simulated with the Linear Boltzmann Transport (LBT) model. We predict the normalized distributions of the groomed jet radius $θ_g$ and momentum splitting fraction $z_g$ with the dynamical grooming algorithm in Pb+Pb coll…
The nuclear modification of jet splitting in relativistic heavy-ion collisions at RHIC and the LHC energies is studied based on the higher twist formalism. Assuming coherent energy loss for the two splitted subjets, a non-monotonic jet energy dependence is found for the nuclear modification of jet splitting function: strongest modification at intermediate jet energies whereas weaker modification for larger or smaller jet energies. Combined with the smaller size and lower density of the QGP medium at RHIC than at the LHC, this explains the CMS-STAR groomed jet puzzle -- strong nuclear modificat…
We develop an effective field theory (EFT) framework to perform an analytic calculation for energy correlator observables computed on groomed heavy-quark jets. A soft-drop grooming algorithm is applied to a jet initiated by a massive quark to minimize soft contamination effects such as pile-up and multi-parton interactions. We specifically consider the two-particle energy correlator as an initial application of this EFT framework to compute heavy quark jet substructure. We find that there are different regimes for the event shapes, depending on the size of the measured correlator observable, t…

We study the jet energy drop, which is the relative difference between the groomed and ungroomed jet energy or transverse momentum. It is one of the fundamental quantities that characterizes the impact of grooming on jets produced in high energy collisions. We consider three different grooming algorithms i) soft drop, ii) iterated soft drop, and iii) trimming. We carry out the resummation of large logarithms of the jet energy drop, the jet radius as well as relevant grooming parameters at next-to-leading logarithmic (NLL$'$) accuracy. In addition, we account for non-global and clustering logar…
We show the sensitivity of groomed jet substructure measurements to the finite resolution power of the QGP to disentangle multiple energetic partons, as produced by QCD jets, that traverse it simultaneously. We illustrate these effects by studying Soft Dropped observables within a hybrid strong/weak coupling model for jet-medium interactions. By analysing Monte-Carlo-generated jet data in heavy ion collisions, we show that the angular structure of these type of observables is sensitive to the value of the QGP resolution length.
Track-assisted mass is a proxy for jet mass that only uses direction information from charged particles, allowing it to be measured at the Large Hadron Collider with very fine angular resolution. In this paper, we introduce a generalization of track-assisted mass and analyze its performance in both parton shower generators and resummed calculations. For the original track-assisted mass, the track-only mass is rescaled by the charged energy fraction of the jet. In our generalization, the rescaling factor includes both per-jet and ensemble-averaged information, facilitating a closer corresponden…
We propose a kinematic method based on a factorization formula for precisely measuring the top quark mass $m_t$ in $pp$ collisions using boosted top jets with light soft drop grooming. By using light grooming, which is an order of magnitude less aggressive than typical grooming, we retain a universal description of the top mass scheme and decay effects, while still effectively removing soft contamination from the top jet. We give field theory results for the hadronization corrections for jets induced by a heavy top quark, showing they are described by a universal hadronic parameter that also a…
We present here the first result on the three-loop gluon jet function in perturbative QCD. Using the three-loop coefficient functions [1,2] for deep-inelastic scattering via the exchange of a virtual photon that couples to quarks or a scalar that couples to gluons and employing the KG equation, renormalization group invariance and factorization theorem, we obtain both the quark and the gluon jet functions up to the three-loop level. The former agrees with the recent result [3]. These jet functions being universal ingredients for many collider and decay processes, will play an important role in…
The sophistication of current predictions for $Z+$jet production at hadron colliders necessitates a re-evaluation of any approximations inherent in the theoretical calculations. In this paper we address one such issue, the inclusion of mass effects in top-quark loops. We ameliorate an existing calculation of $Z+1$~jet and $Z+2$~jet production by presenting exact analytic formulae for amplitudes containing top-quark loops that enter at next-to-leading order in QCD. Although approximations based on an expansion in powers of $1/m_t^2$ can lead to poor high-energy behavior, an exact treatment of t…
We calculate the two-loop soft function for $pp \to jj$, $e^+e^- \to 4j$ or $e p \to 3j$ when the $N$-jettiness observable is measured. The result presented here makes up the necessary piece for realizing the full next-to-next-to-leading order predictions for these processes using the $N$-jettiness subtraction scheme.
The Higgs-boson production channel $gg\to h$ mediated by light-quark loops receives large logarithmic corrections in QCD, which can be resummed using factorization formulae derived in soft-collinear effective theory. In these factorization formulae the radiative gluon jet function appears, which is a central object in the study of factorization beyond the leading order in scale ratios. We calculate this function at two-loop order for the first time and present the subtleties that come along with this.
We present the complete two-loop corrections in massless QCD for the production of two photons and a jet, taking into account all color structures. In particular, we analytically compute all two-loop helicity amplitudes for the quark-antiquark, quark-gluon, and antiquark-gluon channel, and check them with an independent calculation of the polarization-summed interference with the tree amplitude. This is the first time that two-loop QCD corrections to a five-point scattering process have been computed beyond the leading-color approximation for all helicity configurations.
In this work, we complete the calculation of the soft part of the two-loop integrated jet thrust distribution in e+e- annihilation. This jet mass observable is based on the thrust cone jet algorithm, which involves a veto scale for out-of-jet radiation. The previously uncomputed part of our result depends in a complicated way on the jet cone size, r, and at intermediate stages of the calculation we actually encounter a new class of multiple polylogarithms. We employ an extension of the coproduct calculus to systematically exploit functional relations and represent our results concisely. In con…
We present the analytic calculation of the planar master integrals which contribute to compute the two-loop light-fermion electroweak corrections to the production of a Higgs boson in association with a jet in gluon-gluon fusion. The complete dependence on the electroweak-boson mass is retained. The master integrals are evaluated by means of the differential equations method and the analytic results are expressed in terms of multiple polylogarithms up to weight four.
We present three-loop helicity amplitudes for the production of a single photon in association with one jet in Quantum Chromodynamics, a final state which provides a standard candle of the Standard Model at the Large Hadron Collider. We employ a recently-proposed variation of the so-called tensor projection method in the 't Hooft-Veltman scheme (tHV) which avoids the computation of contributions due to unphysical (-2$ε$)-dimensional polarisations of the external states. We obtain compact analytic results expressed in terms of harmonic polylogarithms.
In factorization formulae for cross sections of scattering processes, final-state jets are described by jet functions, which are a crucial ingredient in the resummation of large logarithms. We present an approach to calculate generic one-loop jet functions, by using the geometric subtraction scheme. This method leads to local counterterms generated from a slicing procedure; and whose analytic integration is particularly simple. The poles are obtained analytically, up to an integration over the azimuthal angle for the observable-dependent soft counterterm. The poles depend only on the soft limi…
We present the calculation of the impact factor for the $γ^{(*)}\to q\bar{q}$ transition with one loop accuracy in arbitrary kinematics. The calculation was done within Balitsky's high energy operator expansion. Together with our previous result for the $γ^{(*)}\to q\bar{q} g$ Born impact factor it allows one to derive cross-sections for 2- (one loop) and 3-jet (Born) difractive electroproduction. We write such cross sections for the 2 and 3 jet exclusive diffractive electroproduction off a proton in terms of hadronic matrix elements of Wilson lines. For the 2-jet cross section we demonstrate …
