Far above threshold the production process e^+e^-to t t-bar can be analyzed using effective field theories. In this talk we consider the invariant mass distribution of top-jets and report about our computation of the two-loop heavy quark jet-function. This is a key part of a next-to-next-to-leading order analysis, and already allows for a resummation of all large logs which effect the shape of the top-invariant mass distribution at next-to-next-to-leading log order. A top-mass scheme is defined which is suitable for measurements involving jets, and whose anomalous dimension is determined by the cusp-anomalous dimension to all orders in perturbation theory.
The discriminators of quark-gluon jets developed for $pp$ collisions at the LHC can be used to measure the gluon jet fraction in a jet sample. It allows to measure various characteristics of the quark and gluon jets. The methodology of such measurements for modern hadron colliders is discussed.
The sophistication of current predictions for $Z+$jet production at hadron colliders necessitates a re-evaluation of any approximations inherent in the theoretical calculations. In this paper we address one such issue, the inclusion of mass effects in top-quark loops. We ameliorate an existing calculation of $Z+1$~jet and $Z+2$~jet production by presenting exact analytic formulae for amplitudes containing top-quark loops that enter at next-to-leading order in QCD. Although approximations based on an expansion in powers of $1/m_t^2$ can lead to poor high-energy behavior, an exact treatment of t…
We study the phenomenon of jet quenching utilizing quark and gluon jet substructures as independent probes of heavy ion collisions. We exploit jet and subjet features to highlight differences between quark and gluon jets in vacuum and in a medium with the jet-quenching model implemented in JEWEL. We begin with a physics-motivated, multivariate analysis of jet substructure observables including the jet mass, the radial moments, the $p_T^D$ and the pixel multiplicity. In comparison, we employ state-of-the-art image-recognition techniques by training a deep convolutional neutral network on jet im…
We present a study of the relative energy loss of quark and gluon jets that traverse a weakly-coupled medium. The study is carried out with the jet quenching Monte-Carlo event generator JEWEL which has been validated for a large set of jet observables. We find that the relative energy loss of quark and gluon jets approaches a constant value at large jet energy and that value is significantly larger (closer to 1) than the single parton expectation of $C_F/C_A$. Within JEWEL quark and gluon jets lose energy similarly.
The different modifications of quark- and gluon-initiated jets in the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) produced in heavy-ion collisions is a long-standing question that has not yet received a definitive answer from experiments. In particular, the relative sizes of the modification of quark and gluon jets differ between theoretical models. Therefore, a fully data-driven technique is crucial for an unbiased extraction of the quark and gluon jet spectra and substructure. We perform a proof-of-concept study based on proton-proton and heavy-ion collision events from the \textsc{Pyquen} generator with stati…
Using the AdS/CFT correspondence, we study the heavy quark potential and the jet quenching parameter in the near horizon limit of D3-D(-1) background. The results are compared with those of conformal cases. It is shown that the presence of instantons tends to suppress the heavy quark potential and enhance the jet quenching parameter.
In the symmetric string fragmentation recipe adopted by PYTHIA for jet simulations, the transverse momenta of successive quarks are uncorrelated. This is a simplification but has no theoretical reason. Transverse momentum correlations are naturally expected, for instance, in a covariant multiperipheral model of quark hadronization. We propose a simple recipe of string fragmentation which lead to such correlations. The definition of the jet axis and its relation with the primordial transverse momentum of the quark is also discussed.

In particular, the size of the modifications in the quark-gluon plasma differs between theoretical models. Therefore a fully data-driven technique is crucial for an unbiased extraction of the quark and gluon jet spectra and substructure. Corroborating past results, I demonstrate the capability of a fully data-driven technique called topic modeling in separating quark and gluon contributions to …
We present calculations of Higgs boson production via gluon-gluon fusion in association with one or two additional jets at next-to-leading order in QCD. The calculation of H+jet is exact in the treatment of the top-quark mass, whereas for the H+2 jets calculation the two-loop virtual amplitudes are approximated via a reweighting with leading-order mass effects, while keeping all top-quark mass effects in the real radiation contributions. For H+jet production, this study extends a previous calculation, revealing an error in the previous results. For total and differential cross sections, we pre…
In this paper, we study the fragmentation of a heavy quark into a jet near threshold, meaning that final state jet carries most of the energy of the fragmenting heavy quark. Using the heavy quark fragmentation function, we simultaneously resum large logarithms of the jet radius $R$ and $1-z$, where $z$ is the ratio of the jet energy to the initiating heavy quark energy. There are numerically significant corrections to the leading order rate due to this resummation. We also investigate the heavy quark fragmentation to a groomed jet, using the soft drop grooming algorithm as an example. In order…
After a brief introduction to the state of the art of theoretical predictions for electroweak vector-boson production with both top and bottom quarks at the LHC, we review the case of Z-boson production with b jets, and discuss the impact of NLO QCD+EW corrections and finite b-quark mass effects on the theoretical prediction for Z+b jet production.
Jet handedness as a measure of quark and/or gluon polarizations has been proposed for nearly 30 years. It was demonstrated by measuring the correlation of jet handedness in the electron positron annihilation process. Once parameters are determined, the method could be used to measure quark and/or gluon polarizations in other experiments. The reported data provided evidence for the jet handedness and handedness correlation. However, the jet handedness correlation measured in the electron positron annihilation process from the opposite jets contradicts theoretical prediction by a sign. In order …
We compute the soft anomalous dimension (SAD) matrices for production of massive quarks $Q$ and $\bar{Q}$ in association with a gluon jet, from massless quarks $q$ and antiquarks $\bar{q}$: $q\bar{q}\rightarrow Q\bar{Q}g$, and in the gluon scattering $gg\rightarrow Q\bar{Q}g$. To analyze the behaviour of the eigenvalues of SAD matrices we perform numerical studies of their eigensystems at two special kinematical configurations.
We consider the quark beam function that describes collinear initial-state radiation that is constrained by a veto on reconstructed jets. As the veto is imposed on the transverse momenta of the jets, the beam function is subject to rapidity divergences, and we use the collinear-anomaly framework to extract the perturbative matching kernels to next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) in the strong-coupling expansion. Our calculation is based on a novel framework that automates the computation of beam functions in Mellin space and it provides the ingredients to extend jet-veto resummations for quark…
