After inserting the heavy quark mass dependence into QCD partonic evolution equations, we determine the mean charged hadron multiplicity of jets produced in high energy collisions. We thereby extend the so-called dead cone effect to the phenomenology of multiparticle production in QCD jets and find that the average multiplicity of heavy-quark initiated jets decreases significantly as compared to the massless case, even taking into account the weak decay products of the leading primary quark. We emphasize the relevance of our study as a complementary check of $b$-tagging techniques at hadron colliders like the Tevatron and the LHC.
QCD predictions for moments of multiplicity distributions are compared with experimental data on e+e- collisions and their two-NBD fits. Moments of the multiplicity distribution in a two-NBD model for 1.8 TeV pp collisions are considered. Three-NBD model predictions and fits for pp at LHC energies are also discussed. Analytic expressions for moments of hybrid NBD are derived and used to get insight into jet parameters and multicomponent structure of the processes. Interpretation of observed correlations is proposed.
We compute in the heavy quark effective theory the soft coefficient D_2 entering the resummation of next-to-next-to-leading threshold logarithms for jets initiated by a quark with a small mass compared to the hard scale of the process. We find complete agreement with a previous computation in full QCD. Contrary to our previous guess, this coefficient turns out to be different from that one entering heavy flavor decay or heavy flavor fragmentation.
The solution of the equations for the generating functions of multiplicity distributions of quark and gluon jets in higher order 3NLO perturbative QCD is obtained. The non-perturbative effects are discussed as well. The results are compared to recent experimental data on mean multiplicities, their ratio and its slope, higher moments of the distributions.
In these proceedings we present results from a recent calculation for the production of a W boson in conjunction with five jets at next-to-leading order in perturbative QCD. We also use results at lower multiplicities to extrapolate the cross section to the same process with six jets.
We study the particle multiplicity in a jet or sub-jet as derived from an energy-multiplicity 2-particle correlation. This definition avoids the notion of a globally fixed jet axis and allows for the study of smaller jet cone openings in a more stable way. The results are sensitive to the mean color current $<C >_{A_0} $ in the jet from primary parton $A_0$ which takes into account intermediate partonic processes in the sub-jet production where $C_F< < C >_{A_0} < N_c$ at high energies. We generalize previous calculations in Leading Logarithmic Approximation (LLA). The size of the effects rela…
The energy evolution of average multiplicities and multiplicity fluctuations in jets produced in heavy-ion collisions is investigated from a toy QCD-inspired model. In this model, we use modified splitting functions accounting for medium-enhanced radiation of gluons by a fast parton which propagates through the quark gluon plasma. The leading contribution of the standard production of soft hadrons is enhanced by a factor $\sqrt{N_s}$ while next-to-leading order (NLO) corrections are suppressed by $1/\sqrt{N_s}$, where the parameter $N_s>1$ accounts for the induced-soft gluons in the medium. Ou…
The second and third factorial moments of the multiplicity distributions of gluon and quark jets are calculated up to the next-to-next-to-next-to leading order in perturbative QCD, using the equations for generating functions. The results are confronted with experimental data. A general discussion on high order corrections revealed by such an approach is given. Other possible corrections and approaches are discussed as well.
We compute analytically the effects of energy conservation on the self-similar structure of parton correlations in QCD jets. The calculations are performed both in the constant and running coupling cases. It is shown that the corrections are phenomenologically sizeable. On a theoretical ground, energy conservation constraints preserve the scaling properties of correlations in QCD jets beyond the leading log approximation.
In this work we show that the proper analysis and interpretation of the experimental data on the multiplicity distributions of charged particles produced in jets measured in the ATLAS experiment at the LHC indicates their sub-Poissonian nature. We also show how, by using the recurrent relations and combinants of these distributions, one can obtain new information contained in them and otherwise unavailable, which may broaden our knowledge of the particle production mechanism.
We quantify the magnitude of the parton energy loss in jets in lead-lead collisions at the LHC. We extract the effective color factor characterizing the difference between the in-medium radiation of quark-initiated jets and gluon-initiated jets from the data. Then, we examine the energy loss of prompt charmonia and we point to a remarkable similarity between the quenching of light-quark-initiated jets and the prompt charmonia suppression. Finally, we discuss possible sources of this similarity.
We derive closed expressions for the mean and variance of the (mini-)jet multiplicity distribution in hard scattering processes at low x. Here (mini-)jets are defined as those due to initial-state radiation of gluons with transverse momenta greater than some resolution scale m_R, where Lambda^2 << m_R^2 << Q^2, Lambda being the intrinsic QCD scale and Q the momentum transfer scale of the hard scattering. Our results are valid to leading order in log(1/x) but include all sub-leading logarithms of Q^2/m_R^2. As an illustration, we predict the mini-jet multiplicity in Higgs boson production at th…
We resum the invariant mass distribution of jets initiated by massive quarks in next-to-leading logarithmic approximation and beyond in heuristic way. We find that the inclusion of mass terms, in the N-moment space, results in the universal factor delta_N(Q^2;m^2), taking into account dead-cone effects and soft radiation characteristic of massive charges. This factor multiplies the massless jet distribution function J_N(Q^2). The variable N is rescaled by the mass correction parameter r = m^2/Q^2 << 1 with respect to the standard massless case, being m the quark mass and Q the hard scale. The …
We present a strong coupling constant extraction at Next-to-Leading Order QCD accuracy using ATLAS Z+2,3,4 jets data. This is the first extraction using processes with a dependency to high powers of the coupling constant. We obtain values of the strong coupling constant at the $Z$ mass compatible with the world average and with uncertainties commensurate with other NLO extractions at hadron colliders. Our most conservative result for the strong coupling constant is $α_S=0.1178 ^{+0.0051}_{- 0.0043}$.
We will offer the formal arguments that the very high multiplicity (VHM) events are defined by the heavy QCD jets and, with exponential over multiplicity accuracy, the number of jets must decrease with the increasing multiplicity. This must rise the mean transverse momentum of secondaries with multiplicity. The effectiveness of the LLA in the VHM domain is also discussed.
We calculate the mean number of subjets in quark and gluon jets in the final state of e^+e^- annihilation. Since `quark' and `gluon' jets are scheme-dependent objects, we stress the importance of using the same definition as in experimental analyses. We define the jets using the k_perp algorithm at a coarse scale y_1, and the subjets using a finer scale y_0, in the same algorithm. Gluon jets are anti-tagged by the presence of heavy quarks in both other jets. Our result is exact to leading order in alpha_s, and resums leading and next-to-leading logarithmic terms in the ratio y_1/y_0 to all ord…
In this paper, we report our results on charged hadron multiplicities of heavy quark initiated jets produced in high energy collisions. After implementing the so-called dead cone effect in QCD evolution equations, we find that the average multiplicity decreases significantly as compared to the massless case. Finally, we discuss on the transverse momentum distribution of light quark initiated jets and emphasize on the comparison between our predictions and CDF data.
After inserting the heavy quark mass dependence into QCD partonic evolution equations, we determine the mean charged hadron multiplicity and second multiplicity correlators of jets produced in high energy collisions. We thereby extend the so-called dead cone effect to the phenomenology of multiparticle production in QCD jets and find that the average multiplicity of heavy-quark initiated jets decreases significantly as compared to the massless case, even taking into account the weak decay products of the leading primary quark. We emphasize the relevance of our study as a complementary check of…
The perturbative QCD approach to multiparticle production predicts a characteristic suppression of particle multiplicity in a heavy quark jet as compared to a light quark jet. In the Modified Leading Logarithmic Approximation (MLLA) the multiplicity difference δ_{Q\ell} between heavy and light quark jets is derived in terms of a few other experimentally measured quantities. The earlier prediction for b-quarks needs revision in the light of new experimental results and the improvement in the understanding of the experimental data. We now find δ_{b\ell}=4.4\pm0.4. The updated MLLA results on δ_{…
We investigate the behaviour of jets at high-multiplicity using analytic techniques. We consider in detail the rates, areas and the intermediate splitting scales as a function of the number of jets. In each case, we are able to characterise a general scaling behaviour characteristic for QCD processes, which we compare with results from the parton shower. The study of these observables potentially offers a very general handle in the difficult to describe regime of high-jet multiplicity.
We describe recent applications of the MLLA evolution equations to the calculation of mean multiplicities in quark and gluon jets and the higher moments of hadron and sub-jet multiplicity distributions in $e^+e^-$-annihilation as function of c.m.s. energy $Q$ and resolution parameter $y_{cut}$. The transition from jets to hadrons with increasing jet resolution is considered.
The dependence of the one dimensional Bose-Einstein correlation R_1D derived from proton-proton collisions is examined in terms of energy, hadron multiplicity and number of emerging hadronic jets. It is argued that the observed rise of R_1D with energy is the result of the increase of the average number of hadronic jets. It is further shown that by the relative straightforward measurements of R_1D and its chaoticity parameter $λ$ one should be able to estimate the average number of outgoing hadronic jets emitted over the entire final state phase space without the necessity to rely on a particu…
We calculate the average multiplicity of jets in e+e- annihilation as a function of both the jet resolution parameter, y_cut, and the thrust T. Our result resums to all orders the leading and next-to-leading logarithms in y_cut and 1-T, and is exact up to second order in alpha_s. This allows a comparison between the number of jets found using jet algorithms and the ability to distinguish different jet topologies via thrust.
The collimation of average multiplicity inside quark and gluon jets is investigated in perturbative QCD in the modified leading logarithmic approximation (MLLA). The role of higher order corrections accounting for energy conservation and the running of the coupling constant leads to smaller multiplicity collimation as compared to leading logarithmic approximation (LLA) results. The collimation of jets produced in heavy-ion collisions has also been explored by using medium-modified splitting functions enhanced in the infrared sector. As compared to elementary collisions, the angular distributio…
The properties of quark and gluon jets, and the differences between them, are increasingly important at the LHC. However, Monte Carlo event generators are normally tuned to data from $e^+e^-$ collisions which are primarily sensitive to quark-initiated jets. In order to improve the description of gluon jets we make improvements to the perturbative and the non-perturbative modelling of gluon jets and include data with gluon-initiated jets in the tuning for the first time. The resultant tunes significantly improve the description of gluon jets and are now the default in Herwig 7.1.
We study modification of the photon-tagged and inclusive jets in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=7$ TeV due to mini-quark-gluon plasma which can be produced in high multiplicity events. We show that for underlying events with $dN_{ch}/dη\sim 20-60$ the medium effects lead to a considerable modification of the photon-tagged and inclusive jet fragmentation functions. For inclusive jets the magnitude of the effect is surprisingly large. The effect is quite strong even for typical underlying events. We find that at $\sqrt{s}=7$ TeV the spectrum of charged hadrons is suppressed by $\sim 35-40$ % at $p…
We calculate the azimuthal anisotropy $v_2$ extracted from the large $Δy$ region of two particle $Δy-Δϕ$ correlations in a two-jet system, in which, the masses of the jets are not negligible compared to their energies. As the virtualities of the leading partons, initiating these jets are not negligible either, we use a recently developed, off-shell fragmentation model for the description of hadron production in the jets. We present the effect of the variation of jet mass and hadron multiplicity on the shape of the $v_2$ curve, and reproduce the low-multiplicity data set measured in proton-prot…
In this contribution we review recent progress with fixed-order QCD predictions for the production of a vector boson in association with jets at hadron colliders, using the programs BlackHat and SHERPA. We review general features of next-to-leading-order (NLO) predictions for the production of a massive vector boson in association with four jets. We also discuss how precise descriptions of vector-boson production can be applied to the determination of backgrounds to new physics signals. Here we focus on data-driven backgrounds to a missing-energy-plus-jets search performed by CMS. Finally, we …
Generalization of z-scaling observed in the inclusive high-pT charged hadron and jet production is proposed. The scaling function psi(z) describing both charged hadrons and jets produced in proton-(anti)proton collisions for various multiplicity densities and collision energies is constructed. Anomalous fractal dimensions and parameters characterizing associated medium for both classes of events are established. The basic features of the scaling established in minimum bias events are shown to be preserved up to the highest multiplicity densities measured in experiments UA1, E735, CDF and STAR.…
Analytic predictions for the energy dependence of the mean multiplicities in gluon and quark jets are presented at the next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order (3NLO) of perturbative QCD and are compared to experiment. The 3NLO correction to the gluon jet multiplicity is found to be small. The corresponding theoretical expression provides a good description of available gluon jet measurements. In contrast, the 3NLO correction to the quark jet multiplicity is large and the theoretical expression does not describe the data accurately. It is shown that the well known success of the next-to-leading o…

This article introduces a new class of searches for physics beyond the Standard Model that improves the sensitivity to signals with high jet multiplicity. The proposed searches gain access to high multiplicity signals by reclustering events into large-radius, or "fat," jets and by requiring that each event has multiple massive jets. This technique is applied to supersymmetric scenarios in which gluinos are pair-produced and then subsequently decay to final states with either moderate quantities of missing energy or final states without missing energy. In each of these scenarios, the use of jet…
We show that both the multiplicity distribution and the ratio of factorial cumulants over factorial moments for 2-jet events in e+e- annihilation at the Z^0 peak can be well reproduced by the weighted superposition of two negative binomial distributions, associated to the contribution of $b\bar b$ and light flavoured events respectively. The negative binomial distribution is then suggested to describe the multiplicity distribution of 2-jet events with fixed flavour.
The phenomenological energy dissipation in QCD jets evolution with colour coherence is considered and the corresponding modified parton multiplicity and distribution function are computed.
I review theoretical and experimental challenges in studies of the ratio of multiplicities in quark and gluon jets, and its relevance for our understanding of hadronization.
Precision theoretical predictions for high multiplicity scattering rely on the evaluation of increasingly complicated scattering amplitudes which come with an extremely high CPU cost. For state-of-the-art processes this can cause technical bottlenecks in the production of fully differential distributions. In this article we explore the possibility of using neural networks to approximate multi-variable scattering amplitudes and provide efficient inputs for Monte Carlo integration. We focus on QCD corrections to $e^+e^-\to$ jets up to one-loop and up to five jets. We demonstrate reliable interpo…
We review results on hadron multiplicities in high energy particle collisions. Both theory and experiment are discussed. The general procedures used to describe particle multiplicity in Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) are summarized. The QCD equations for the generating functions of the multiplicity distributions are presented both for fixed and running coupling strengths. The mean multiplicities of gluon and quark jets, their ratio, higher moments, and the slopes of multiplicities as a function of energy scale, are among the main global features of multiplicity for which QCD results exist. Recen…
We introduce a new jet observable {\em zest} defined on exclusively constructed jets and study its potential to discriminate jets originated from Standard Model heavy particles like $W,~Z$ bosons and top quark from gluon initiated jets. Zest exhibits properties such as boost invariance, stability against global color exchange among partons, and inclusion or exclusion of a few soft particles in the jet. We also observe that for gluon jets, zest distribution is mostly insensitive to the jet mass. These properties make zest a suitable candidate for vetoing gluon jets at the colliders. Zest when u…
We discuss some important issues concerning multiplicities in quark and gluon jets in e+e- annihilation. In QCD the properties of a jet in general depend on two scales, the energy and virtuality of the jet. Frequently theoretical predictions apply to a situation where these scales coincide, while for experimental data they are often different. Thus an analysis to extract e.g. the asymptotic multiplicity ratio CF/CA between quark and gluon jets, needs a carefully specified jet definition, together with a calculation of nonleading corrections to the multiplicity evolution. We propose methods to …
The angular structure of collisional and radiative energy losses of a hard parton jet propagating through the quark-gluon plasma is analyzed. The possibility to observe the energy losses of quark- and gluon-initiated jets in dense QCD-matter (jet quenching) measuring the characteristics of real hadronic jets in ultra-relativistic collisions of nuclei is investigated. In particular, using calorimetric studies of jet + jet, gamma + jet and Z + jet channels is discussed.
{ In this paper we present a natural and comprehensive generalisation of the standard factorial moments ($\clFq$) analysis of a multiplicity distribution. The Generalised Factorial Moments are defined for all $q$ in the complex plane and, as far as the negative part of its spectrum is concerned, could be useful for the study of infrared structure of the Strong Interactions Theory of high energy interactions (LEP multiplicity distribution under the ${\cal Z}_0$). The QCD calculation of the Generalised Factorial Moments for negative $q$ is performed in the double leading log accuracy and is comp…
We present a new approach in considering and including both the perturbative and the nonperturbative contributions to the multiplicity ratio $r$ of gluon and quark jets. The new method is motivated by recent developments in timelike small-x resummation obtained in the $\bar{\rm MS}$ factorization scheme. A global analysis to fit the available data is also presented.
We study the new relation [1] between the anomalous dimensions, resummed through next-to-next-to-leading-logarithmic order, in the Dokshitzer-Gribov-Lipatov-Altarelli-Parisi evolution equations for the first Mellin moments D_{q,g}(μ^2) of the fragmentation functions, which correspond to the average multiplicities of hadrons in jets initiated by quarks and gluons, respectively. This relation is shown to lead to probabilistic properties of the properly rescaled parton jet multiplicities obtained from standard ones by extracting the quark and gluon "color charges" C_F and C_A, respectively.
The Abelian decomposition of QCD tells that there are two types of gluons, the color neutral neurons and colored chromons. We propose to confirm the Abelian decomposition testing the existence of two types of gluon jets experimentally. We predict that one quarter of the gluon jet is made of the neurons which has the color factor 3/4 and the sharpest jet radius and smallest charged particle multiplicity, while the three quarters of the gluon jet are made of the chromons with the color factor 9/4 which have the broadest jet radious (broader than the quark jet). Moreover, we argue that the neuron…

Distinguishing quark-initiated jets from gluon-initiated jets has the potential to significantly improve the reach of many beyond-the-standard model searches at the Large Hadron Collider and to provide additional tests of QCD. To explore whether quark and gluon jets could possibly be distinguished on an event-by-event basis, we perform a comprehensive simulation-based study. We explore a variety of motivated and unmotivated variables with a semi-automated multivariate approach. General conclusions are that at 50% quark jet acceptance efficiency, around 80%-90% of gluon jets can be rejected. So…
The charged particle multiplicities of two- and three-jet events from the reaction e$^+$e$^-$,\to $Z$^0 \to hadrons$ are measured for Z$^0$ decays to light quark (uds) flavors, using the data sample of the OPAL Collaboration at LEP. Using recent theoretical expressions to account for biases from event selection, results corresponding to unbiased gluon jets are extracted. The unbiased gluon jet data are compared to corresponding results for quark jets. We determine the ratio $r \equiv \ngluon/\nq$ of multiplicities between gluon and quark jets as a function of energy scale. We also determine th…
Quantum chromodymamics (QCD) approach to the problem of multiplicity distributions in high energy particle collisions is described. The solutions of QCD equations for generating functions of the multiplicity distributions in gluon and quark jets are presented for both fixed and running coupling constants. The newly found characteristics very sensitive to distribution shapes is discussed. The predictions are confronted to experimental data. Evolution of the multiplicity distributions with decreasing phase space windows is considered and discussed in connection to the notions of intermittency an…
We study the structure of jets in proton-proton collisions at LHC energies using \textsc{Pythia} 8 Monte Carlo simulations. We demonstrate that the radial jet profiles exhibit scaling properties with charged-hadron event multiplicity over a broad transverse-momentum range. We also provide parametrizations of the jet profiles based on different statistically-motivated analytical distributions. Based on this we propose that the scaling behavior stems from fundamental statistical properties of jet fragmentation.
Recently, the moments of multiplicity distributions in e+e- annihilation and the ratios H_q (cumulant over factorial moments K_q/F_q) have been determined both for the hadronic final state and for jets at variable resolution. These ratios show an oscillatory behaviour as function of q with strong dependence of the amplitude and length of oscillation on the jet resolution parameter y_{cut}. The recent explanation of this phenomenon based on perturbative QCD calculations is discussed.
Three jets events in the e$^+$e$^-$ collisions at 91.2 GeV are investigated using both HERWIG and JETSET Monte Carlo generators. The angles between the three jets are used to identify the quark and gluon jets. The analysis at parton level is done to ensure the reasonableness of this method and an angular cut is ultilized to improve the purity of this identification. The multiplicity inside the identified quark or gluon jets agree with the QCD predictions.
