We study the new relation [1] between the anomalous dimensions, resummed through next-to-next-to-leading-logarithmic order, in the Dokshitzer-Gribov-Lipatov-Altarelli-Parisi evolution equations for the first Mellin moments D_{q,g}(μ^2) of the fragmentation functions, which correspond to the average multiplicities of hadrons in jets initiated by quarks and gluons, respectively. This relation is shown to lead to probabilistic properties of the properly rescaled parton jet multiplicities obtained from standard ones by extracting the quark and gluon "color charges" C_F and C_A, respectively.
Final states with leptons, jets and missing transverse energy are a promising way to detect Supersymmetry at the Large Hadron Collider. Results of simulation studies performed by the CMS and ATLAS collaborations are presented. The discovery of new physics is shown to be possible within the first fb^-1 of collected integrated luminosity.
A possible explanation of the excesses observed by ATLAS in the Z+jets+MET channel within the p(henomenological)MSSM is discussed. We have found that the cascade of first/second generation squarks to binos to Higgsino LSPs, with judiciously chosen sparticle masses, can provide a viable scenario that is consistent with all other experimental constraints.
We investigate the discovery potential of a Stealth SUSY scenario involving squark decays by reconstructing the lightest neutralino decay products using a large-radius jet containing a high transverse momentum photon. Requirements on the event topology, such as photon and large-radius jet multiplicity result in less background than signal. We also estimated the sensitivity of our analysis and found that it has a better exclusion potential compared to the strongest existing search for the specific benchmark points considered here.
We study the breaking of Casimir scaling, $C_F/C_A$, due to the evolution of jets in a hot and extended medium. By using JEWEL, a medium modified Monte Carlo event generator validated for a wide set of observables, we are able to study separately the development of quark and gluon-initiated jets produced back-to-back with a $Z-$boson. Focusing on the $p_T$ distribution, we conclude first that the colour charge ratio is constant but larger than Casimir scaling for high $p_T$ jets. In addition, our results seem to indicate that the medium induced cascade is more similar between quarks and gluons…
We investigate squark and gluino pair production at LHC (CMS) with subsequent decays into quarks and LSP for the case of nonuniversal gaugino masses. Visibility of signal by an excess over SM background in (n > 1)jets + E^{miss}_T events depends rather strongly on the relation between LSP, gluino and squark masses and it decreases with the increase of LSP mass. For relatively heavy LSP mass closed to squark or gluino masses and for (m_{\tilde{q}}, m_{\tilde{g}}) > 1.5 TeV signal is too small to be observable. For the case when only third generation squarks and LSP are relatively light signal i…
The ATLAS Collaboration has reported the first results of the search for SUSY particles in 1-lepton + 3 jets + MET final states. An essential ingredient for these results is a reliable background estimation in the signal region, in particular of the ttbar, W+jets and QCD backgrounds. The estimation of these three backgrounds is explained in this paper. The ttbar and W+jets backgrounds are obtained from a background dominated control region and extrapolated to the signal region, whereas for the estimation of the QCD background a matrix method is used.
Within the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM) the production and decay of superpartners can give rise to backgrounds for Higgs boson searches. Here MSSM background processes to the vector boson fusion channel with the Higgs boson decaying into two tau leptons or two W-bosons are investigated, giving rise to dilepton plus missing transverse momentum signals of the Higgs boson. Starting from a scenario with relatively small masses of the supersymmetric (SUSY) particles, with concomitant large cross section of the background processes, one obtains a first conservative estimate of the ba…
An effective mass scale Meffsusy for supersymmetric particles is defined and techniques for its measurement at the LHC discussed. Monte Carlo results show that, for jets + ETmiss events, a variable constructed from the scalar sum of the transverse momenta of all reconstructed jets together with ETmiss provides in most cases the most accurate model independent measurement of Meffsusy (intrinsic precision ~ 2.1 % for mSUGRA models). The overall precision with which Meffsusy could be measured after given periods of LHC running and for given classes of SUSY models is calculated. The technique is e…
The LHC search for nearly degenerate gluinos and neutralinos, which can occur, for example, in SUSY axion models, is limited by the reduced missing transverse momentum and effective mass in the events. We propose the use of kinematic correlations between jets coming from initial state radiation (ISR) in gluino pair production events at the 13 TeV LHC. A significant improvement in the signal to background ratio is obtained for the highly compressed gluino-neutralino search, by using cuts on the rapidity and azimuthal angle separation between the pair of tagged jets with the highest transverse m…
We examine the prospects for testing SO(10) Yukawa-unified supersymmetric models during the first year of LHC running at \sqrt{s}= 7 TeV, assuming integrated luminosity values of 0.1 to 1 fb^-1. We consider two cases: the Higgs splitting (HS) and the D-term splitting (DR3) models. Each generically predicts light gluinos and heavy squarks, with an inverted scalar mass hierarchy. We hence expect large rates for gluino pair production followed by decays to final states with large b-jet multiplicity. For 0.2 fb^-1 of integrated luminosity, we find a 5 sigma discovery reach of m(gluino) ~ 400 GeV e…
A recently proposed class of supersymmetric models predicts rather light and nearly mass-degenerate higgsinos, while the other superparticles are significantly heavier. In this paper we study the early LHC phenomenology of a benchmark model of this kind. If the squarks and gluinos, and in particular the lighter stop, are still light enough to be within reach, then evidence for our model can be found in hadronic SUSY searches. Moreover, with dedicated searches it will be possible to distinguish the light higgsino model from generic SUSY models with a bino LSP. Search channels with b-jets and wi…
We discuss SUSY models in which renormalizable lepton number violating couplings hide the decay of the Higgs through h -> χ_1^0 + χ_1^0 followed by χ_1^0 -> τ+ 2 jets or χ_1^0 -> ν_τ+ 2 jets and also explain neutrino masses. This mechanism can be made compatible with gauge mediated SUSY breaking.
We study the observability of the squarks and gluinos in CMS at LHC. Classical E_T^miss + jets final state as well as a number of additional multilepton signatures (0 leptons, 1 lepton, 2 leptons of the same sign, 2 leptons of the opposite sign and 3 leptons) are investigated . The detection of these sparticles relies on the observation of an excess of events over Standard Model background expectations. The study is made in the framework of a minimal SU(5) mSUGRA model as a function of m_0, m_1/2 for 4 sets of model parameters : tan(beta) = 2 or 35 and sign(mu) = +/- 1 and for fixed value of A…
The Higgs boson may dominantly decay to 4 light jets through a light pseudo-scalar intermediary: h -> 2 eta -> 4j, making reconstruction at the LHC particularly challenging. We explore the phenomenology of such "Buried Higgs" scenarios in which the primary discovery channel of the Higgs is in cascade decays of superpartners. QCD backgrounds that would otherwise overwhelm the Higgs decay are suppressed by the requirement of high p_T jets and large missing transverse momentum that are the typical signatures of TeV scale supersymmetry. Utilizing jet substructure techniques, we find that for burie…
The collider phenomenology of models with Universal Extra Dimensions (UED) is surprisingly similar to that of supersymmetric (SUSY) scenarios. For each level-1 bosonic (fermionic) Kaluza-Klein (KK) state, there is a fermionic (bosonic) analog in SUSY and thus UED scenarios are often known as bosonic supersymmetry. The minimal version of UED (mUED) gives rise to a quasi-degenerate particle spectrum at each KK-level and thus, can not explain the enhanced Higgs to diphoton decay rate hinted by the ATLAS collaboration of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) experiment. However, in the non-minimal versi…
This dissertation focuses on phenomenological studies for possible signals for supersymmetric events at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). We have divided our endeavours into three separate projects. First, we consider SUSY models where the gluino production at the LHC should be rich in top and bottom quark jets. Requiring $b$-jets in addition to missing energy $\eslt$ should, therefore, enhance the supersymmetry signal relative to Standard Model backgrounds. We quantify the increase in the supersymmetry reach of the LHC from $b$-tagging in a variety of well-motivated models of supersymmetry. We…
If the lighter stop eigenstate decays directly to two jets via baryonic R-parity violation, it could have escaped existing LHC and Tevatron searches in four-jet events, even for masses as small as 100 GeV. In order to recover sensitivity in the face of increasingly harsh trigger requirements at the LHC, we propose a search for stop pairs in the highly-boosted regime, using the approaches of jet substructure. We demonstrate that the four-jet triggers can be completely bypassed by using inclusive jet-H_T triggers, and that the resulting QCD continuum background can be processed by substructure m…
In recent years many models of supersymmetry have implied a large production rate for events including a high multiplicity of third generation quarks, such as four top quarks. It is arguably the best-motivated channel for early LHC discovery. A particular example is generic string theories compactified to four dimensions with stabilized moduli which typically have multi-TeV squarks and lighter gluinos (below a TeV) with a large pair production rate and large branching ratios to four tops. We update and sharpen the analysis 4-top signals and background to 7 TeV LHC energy. For 1 fb-1 integrated…
We present a study of sensitivity of the R-parity violating SUSY searches with the upgraded D0 detector in Run II of the Fermilab Tevatron, within a SUGRA framework. We considered the lightest neutralino as an LSP that decays into a lepton and slepton (R-parity violating decay), resulting in 2e + \ge 4 jets or 2μ+ \ge 4 jets final state. The analysis, based on scaling of the Run I results, shows that squarks and gluinos with masses up to about 0.6 TeV could be probed with 2 fb^-1 of Run II data. This work has been done in the context of the BTMSSM Working Group of the Run II SUSY/Higgs Worksho…
In this thesis we concentrate on the determination of the spin of an intermediate particle by using a decay chain. In SUSY the gluino is especially interesting for searches at the LHC, since it is a Majorana fermion which can produce like-sign dileptons in the final state. In UED the like-sign dilepton signature could occur as well from the decay of a bosonic KK-gluon. As we will show, angular distributions of the outgoing b-jets in SUSY and UED differ due to the different coupling structures. The effect from the different boosts of gluino and heavy gluon is shown to be much smaller. The hadro…
The Higgs and some of the Standard Model superpartners may have been copiously produced at LEP and the Tevatron without being detected. We study a novel scenario of this type in which the Higgs decays predominantly into a light hidden sector either directly or through light SUSY states. Subsequent cascades increase the multiplicity of hidden sector particles which, after decaying back into the Standard Model, appear in the detector as clusters of collimated leptons known as lepton jets. We identify the relevant collider observables that characterize this scenario, and study a wide range of LEP…
Traditional searches for SUSY at hadron colliders rely heavily on the presence of large missing transverse energy (ME_T) to reject background compared to signal. On the other hand, initial searches for new physics at the LHC may not be able to rely on ME_T due to a variety of detector calibration issues. We show that much of SUSY parameter space is accessible to discovery even {\it without} using ME_T, and with rather low integrated luminosities 0.1-1 fb^{-1}. A key role is played by isolated lepton multiplicity which arises from gluino and squark cascade decays. Requiring \ge 3 isolated lepto…
We study the impact of the jets and missing transverse momentum SUSY analyses of the ATLAS experiment on the phenomenological MSSM (pMSSM). We investigate sets of SUSY models with a flat and logarithmic prior in the SUSY mass scale and a mass range up to 1 and 3 TeV, respectively. These models were found previously in the study 'Supersymmetry without Prejudice'. Removing models with long-lived SUSY particles, we show that 99% of 20000 randomly generated pMSSM model points with a flat prior and 87% for a logarithmic prior are excluded by the ATLAS results. For models with squarks and gluinos be…
We discuss the signals at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) for scenarios with non-universal gaugino masses in supersymmetric (SUSY) theories. We perform a multichannel analysis, and consider the ratios of event rates in different channels such as $jets + {E}_T/ $, $same$ - and $opposite$-$sign dileptons$ $+jets+ {E}_T/ $, as well as $single-lepton$ and $trilepton$ final states together with $jets + {E}_T/ $ . Low-energy SUSY spectra corresponding to high-scale gaugino non-universality arising from different breaking schemes of SU(5) as well as SO(10) Grand Unified (GUT) SUSY models are consider…
We demonstrate that in supersymmetry (SUSY) with relatively light top superpartners, h -> bb can be a very promising channel to discover the SM-like Higgs resonance at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), although in general contexts it is thought to be challenging because of its huge QCD background. In this scenario, the SM-like Higgs boson is mainly produced via cascade decays initiated by pair-produced stop or sbottom squarks. The good sensitivity to h -> bb owes a great deal to the application of multiple (>= 4) b-jet tagging in removing the QCD background, and color-flow variables for reconst…
New light bosons that couple weakly to the standard model (SM) particles are predicted in various extensions of the standard model (BSM). Examples include supersymmetric (SUSY) theories with extended Higgs sectors or with a hidden valleys (dark SUSY). In these models the light bosons can be produced directly in the decay of a Higgs boson, or as part of the decay chain of SUSY particles. Depending on the branching fraction, the exotic decays of the SM-Higgs can be undetected in standard analysis techniques or due to its modified production cross section of the Higgs bosons at the LHC. Therefore…
We show the new relationship [1] between the anomalous dimensions, resummed through next-to-next-to-leading-logarithmic order, in the Dokshitzer-Gribov-Lipatov-Altarelli-Parisi (DGLAP) evolution equations for the first Mellin moments D{q,g}(\mu2) of the quark and gluon fragmentation functions, which correspond to the average hadron multiplicities in jets initiated by quarks and gluons, respectively. This relationship, which is independent of the number of quark flavors, strongly improves previous treatments by allowing for an exact solution of the evolution equations. So far, such relationship…

So far, such relationships have only been known from supersymmetric (SUSY) QCD. Exploiting available next-to-next-to-next-to-leading-order (NNNLO) information on the ratio D_g^+(mu2)/D_q^+(mu2) of …
An exponentially large extra dimension can be naturally realized by the Casimir energy and the gaugino condensation in 5D supersymmetric theory. The model does not require any hierarchies among the 5D parameters. The key ingredient is an additional modulus other than the radion, which generically exists in 5D supergravity. SUSY is broken at the vacuum, which can be regarded as the Scherk-Schwarz SUSY breaking. We also analyze the mass spectrum and discuss some phenomenological aspects.
Assuming that supersymmetry is realized with parameters in the hyperbolic branch/focus point (HB/FP) region of the minimal supergravity (mSUGRA) model, we show that by searching for multijet + missing E_T events with tagged b jets the reach of experiments at the LHC may be extended by as much as 20% from current projections. The reason for this is that gluino decays to third generation quarks are enhanced because the lightest neutralino has substantial higgsino components. Although we were motivated to perform this analysis because the HB/FP region is compatible with the recent determination o…
The supersymmetric particles (sparticles) belonging exclusively to the electroweak sector of the minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM) may hold the key to the observed dark matter relic density in the universe even if all strongly interacting sparticles are very heavy. The importance of the light EW sparticles in DM physics and in producing spectacular collider signals is emphasized. It is shown that even the preliminary data on the direct searches of these sparticles at the LHC, significantly constrain the parameter space of the MSSM compatible with the observed relic density and provi…
Naturalness considerations, together with the non-observation of superpartners of the Standard Model particles at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) so far, favor supersymmetric (SUSY) models in which third generation squarks are significantly lighter than those of the first two generations. In such models, gluino pair-production is typically the dominant SUSY production process at the LHC, and it often leads to final states with multiple top quarks. Some of these top quarks may be relativistic in the lab frame, in which case their hadronic decays may produce "top jets". We propose that the recen…
In the presence of even minuscule baryonic R-parity violation, the stop can be the lightest superpartner and evade LHC searches because it decays into two jets. In order to cover this interesting possibility, we here consider new searches for RPV stops produced in gluino cascades. While typical searches for gluinos decaying to stops rely on same-sign dileptons, the RPV cascades usually have fewer hard leptons, less excess missing energy, and more jets than R-parity conserving cascades. If the gluino is a Dirac fermion, same-sign dilepton signals are also often highly depleted. We therefore exp…
The lack of observation of superpartners at the Large Hadron Collider so far has led to a renewed interest in supersymmetric models with R-parity violation (RPV). In particular, imposing the Minimal Flavor Violation (MFV) hypothesis on a general RPV model leads to a realistic and predictive framework. Naturalness suggests that stops and gluinos should appear at or below the TeV mass scale. We consider a simplified model with these two particles and MFV couplings. The model predicts a significant rate of events with same-sign dileptons and b-jets. We re-analyze a recent CMS search in this chann…
We propose the signal $1b+1l+N_j+\etslash$ along with appropriate selection criteria for the LHC 7 TeV run, where the number of jets $(N_j)$ is $\ge$ 2 or 4. These signals can complement the canonical $Jets + \etslash$ signature since they are sensitive to the trilinear soft breaking parameter $(A_0)$ and low values of the parameter tan$β$ in the minimal supergravity (mSUGRA) model. A large region of this mSUGRA parameter space within the reach of the ongoing experiments at the LHC is disfavoured by the bound on the lightest Higgs boson mass ($m_h \ge 114.4 $ GeV) unless $A_0$ has moderate to …
Charged track multiplicity is among the most powerful observables for discriminating quark- from gluon-initiated jets. Despite its utility, it is not infrared and collinear (IRC) safe, so perturbative calculations are limited to studying the energy evolution of multiplicity moments. While IRC-safe observables, like jet mass, are perturbatively calculable, their distributions often exhibit Casimir scaling, such that their quark/gluon discrimination power is limited by the ratio of quark to gluon color factors. In this paper, we introduce new IRC-safe counting observables whose discrimination pe…
We investigate the possibility that the excess observed in the leptonic-$Z +$jets $+\slashed{E}_T$ ATLAS SUSY search is due to pair productions of a vector-like quark $U$ decaying to the first-generation quarks and $Z$ boson. We find that the excess can be explained within the 2$σ$ (up to 1.4$σ$) level while evading the constraints from the other LHC searches. The preferred range of the mass and branching ratio are $610 < m_{U} < 760$ GeV and ${\rm Br}(U \rightarrow Z q) > 0.3$-$0.45$, respectively.
The well-known hierarchy between the Planck scale (~10^{19}GeV) and the TeV scale, namely a ratio of ~10^{16} between the two, is coincidentally repeated in a inverted order between the TeV scale and the dark energy scale at \~10^{-3}eV implied by the observations. We argue that this is not a numerical coincidence. The same brane-world setups to address the first hierarchy problem may also in principle address this second hierarchy issue. Specifically, we consider supersymmetry in the bulk and its breaking on the brane and resort to the Casimir energy induced by the bulk graviton-gravitino mas…
I present a unified approach to calculating the next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) soft and virtual QCD corrections to cross sections for electroweak, Higgs, QCD, and SUSY processes. I derive master formulas that can be used for any of these processes in hadron-hadron and lepton-hadron collisions. The formulas are based on a unified threshold resummation formalism and can be applied to both total and differential cross sections for processes with either simple or complex color flows and for various factorization schemes and kinematics. As a test of the formalism, I rederive known NNLO result…
We recover in QCD an amazingly simple relationship between the anomalous dimensions, resummed through next-to-next-to-leading-logarithmic order, in the Dokshitzer-Gribov-Lipatov-Altarelli-Parisi evolution equations for the first Mellin moments $D_{q,g}(μ^2)$ of the quark and gluon fragmentation functions, which correspond to the average hadron multiplicities in jets initiated by quarks and gluons, respectively. We study quark and gluon jets separately using public collider data from the CMS experiment. Our analysis is based on 2.3/fb of proton-proton collisions at 7 TeV, collected at the Large Hadron Collider in 2011. We define two non-overlapping samples via a pseudorapidity cut -- central jets with |eta| < 0.65 and forward jets with |eta| > 0.65 -- and employ jet topic modeling to extract individual distributions for the maximally separable categories. Under certain assumptions, such as sample independence and mutual irreducibility, these categories correspond to "quark" and "gluon" jets, as given …
