Top-quark pair production with an additional jet is an important signal and background process at the LHC. We present the next-to-leading order QCD calculation for this process and show results for integrated as well as differential cross sections.
We study the planar-flow distributions of narrow, highly boosted, massive QCD jets. Using the factorization properties of QCD in the collinear limit, we compute the planar-flow jet function from the one-to-three splitting function at tree-level. We derive the leading-log behavior of the jet function analytically. We also compare our semi-analytic jet function with parton-shower predictions using various generators.
With the advent of LEP we discovered jets and at its last years we learned a lot about intermediate vector bosons. All that strongly supports our belief in QCD. Jet physics is briefly described in this talk. Experimental results are compared with QCD predictions. It is shown that the perturbative QCD has been able not only to describe the existing data but also to predict many bright phenomena.
We calculate the one-loop QCD correction for inclusive jet cross section and Drell-Yan process in a general low-energy effective Lagrangian for composite quarks and leptons.
We present a master formula, with applicability conditions, which allows us to automate the resummation of infrared and collinear logarithms appearing in distributions of jet observables in QCD at next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy.
We compute the differential and total rate of the semileptonic decay of polarized top-quarks $t\to \ell ν_\ell + b{\rm jet} + {\rm jet}$ at next-to-leading order (NLO) in the QCD coupling with an off-shell intermediate $W$ boson. We present several normalized distributions, in particular those that reflect the $t$-spin analyzing powers of the lepton, the b-jet and the $W^+$ boson at LO and NLO QCD.
JetViP is a computer program for the calculation of inclusive single- and dijet cross sections in eP- and e-gamma-scattering in NLO QCD. The virtuality of the photon, radiated by the incoming electron, can be chosen in a continuous range, reaching from photoproduction into deep inelastic scattering. The various contributions to the full jet cross section, including the resolved photon contributions, are implemented. The calculation is based on the phase-space-slicing method.
We complete the calculation of the three-gluon-emission contribution to the same-hemisphere part of the zero-jettiness soft function at next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order in perturbative QCD.
We will offer the formal arguments that the very high multiplicity (VHM) events are defined by the heavy QCD jets and, with exponential over multiplicity accuracy, the number of jets must decrease with the increasing multiplicity. This must rise the mean transverse momentum of secondaries with multiplicity. The effectiveness of the LLA in the VHM domain is also discussed.
We calculate the production of a W boson in association with up to two jets including at least one b-jet to next-to-leading order (NLO) in QCD at the CERN Large Hadron Collider with 7 TeV center-of-mass energy. Both exclusive and inclusive event cross section and b-jet cross sections are presented. The calculation is performed consistently in the five-flavor-number scheme where both q anti-q' and bq (q =\= b) initiated parton level processes are included at NLO QCD. We study the residual theoretical uncertainties of the NLO predictions due to the renormalization and factorization scale depende…
We discuss a calculation of the next-to-leading order QCD corrections to the process $e^+e^-\to 3$ jets with massive quarks, and show numerical results for the three jet fraction and the differential two jet rate.
A general method for calculating \NLO cross sections in perturbative QCD is presented. The algorithm is worked out for calculating $N$-jet cross sections in hadron-hadron collisions. The generalization of the scheme to performing caclulations for other QCD process, such as electron-positron annihilation or in deep inelastic scattering is also straightforward. As an illustration several three-jet cross section distributions in electron-positron annihilation, calculated using the algorithm, are presented.
Real and virtual contributions to the quark-initiated forward jet vertex in QCD are calculated at next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy using Lipatov's effective action, valid in the high energy multi-Regge limit. A regularization of longitudinal divergencies is proposed which allows for the determination of jet observables. Agreement with previous results in the literature is found.
We derive generating functions, valid to next-to-double logarithmic accuracy, for QCD jet rates according to the inclusive forms of the kt, Cambridge/Aachen and anti-kt algorithms, which are equivalent at this level of accuracy. We compare the analytical results with jet rates and average jet multiplicities from the SHERPA event generator, and study the transition between Poisson-like and staircase-like behaviour of jet ratios.
We report the calculation of next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) QCD corrections in the purely gluonic channel to dijet production and related observables at hadron colliders. Our result represents the first NNLO calculation of a massless jet observable at hadron colliders, and opens the path towards precision QCD phenomenology with the LHC.
We present a subtraction scheme for computing jet cross sections in electron-positron annihilation at next-to-next-to-leading order accuracy in perturbative QCD. In this second part we deal with the regularization of the real-virtual contribution to the NNLO correction.
We build a computer code that fully automates the resummation of jet-observable distributions at next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy. As an application we present results for a jet shape in hadronic dijet production.
We describe recent applications of the MLLA evolution equations to the calculation of mean multiplicities in quark and gluon jets and the higher moments of hadron and sub-jet multiplicity distributions in $e^+e^-$-annihilation as function of c.m.s. energy $Q$ and resolution parameter $y_{cut}$. The transition from jets to hadrons with increasing jet resolution is considered.
The complete QCD evolution equation for factorial moments in quark and gluon jets is numerically solved with initial conditions at threshold by fully taking into account the energy-momentum conservation law. Within the picture of Local Parton Hadron Duality, the perturbative QCD predictions can successfully describe the available experimental data.
The reaction $e^+e^-$ annihilation into three jets was recently computed for massive quarks at next-to-leading order in perturbative QCD. We discuss some results of our calculation for b jets produced at the Z resonance.
The transverse momentum flow inside jets is a sensitive measure of internal jet structure. For the current jets in deep inelastic scattering this jet shape measure is determined at order alpha_s^2, i.e. with up to three partons inside a single jet. The scale dependence of jet shapes in various jet algorithms is discussed. Results agree well with recent measurements by the ZEUS Collaboration, without introducing the hadronization parameter R_sep.
We calculate next-to-leading order (NLO) QCD corrections to electroweak Higgs plus three jet production. Both vector boson fusion (VBF) and Higgs-strahlung type contributions are included along with all interferences. The calculation is implemented within the Matchbox NLO framework of the Herwig++ event generator.
We compute the next-to-leading order QCD corrections to WZ+jet production at the Tevatron and the LHC, including decays of the electroweak bosons to light leptons with all off-shell effects taken into account. The corrections are sizable and have significant impact on the differential distributions.
We present a subtraction scheme for computing jet cross sections in electron-positron annihilation at next-to-next-to-leading order accuracy in perturbative QCD. In this first part we deal with the regularization of the doubly-real contribution to the NNLO correction.
We study evolution of colour gluons and prove the possibility of gluon squeezed states at the nonperturbative QCD jet stage. Angular and rapidity dependences of squeezed gluon second correlation function are studied. We demonstrate that the new gluon states can have both sub-poissonian and super-poissonian statistics corresponding to antibunching and bunching of gluons.
We show that a recently proposed extension of QCD by the addition of a multiplet of scalars transforming as (2,2,1) under $SU(2)_L\times SU(2)_R\times SU(3)_ {colour}$ provides a natural and parameter-free explanation for many observed features of the excess 4 jet events reported by ALEPH.
We compare predictions based on small x (QCD) dynamics with recent data for deep inelastic events containing forward jets or forward pi0 mesons. We quantify the effect of imposing the (higher order) consistency condition on the BFKL equation and study uncertainties inherent in the QCD predictions. We also estimate the cross-section for the forward production of two jets.
We present a new subtraction scheme for computing jet cross sections in electron-positron annihilation at next-to-leading order accuracy in perturbative QCD. The new scheme is motivated by problems emerging in extending the subtraction scheme to the next-to-next-to-leading order. The new scheme is tested by comparing predictions for three-jet event-shape distributions to those obtained by the standard program EVENT.
In this talk we discuss recent progress concerning precise predictions for hadron colliders. We show results of two applications of tensor reduction using GOLEM methods: the next-to-leading order (NLO) corrections to $pp \to ZZ+$jet as an important background for Higgs particle and new physics searches at hadron colliders, and the NLO corrections to graviton plus jet hadro-production, which is an important channel for graviton searches at the Tevatron and the LHC.
The perturbative QCD provides a good overall description of both the jet and hadron multiplicities in the $e^+e^-$ annihilation reaction. In this description the hadrons are considered as dual to partons at a small resolution parameter $Q_0$ characteristic of a hadronic scale of few hundred MeV.
We report on the calculation of the next-to-leading order QCD corrections to the production of top--anti-top quark pairs in association with a hard jet at the Tevatron and at the LHC. We present results for the t tbar + jet cross section and the forward--backward charge asymmetry. The corrections stabilize the leading-order prediction for the cross section. The charge asymmetry receives large corrections.
We report on the next-to-leading order QCD calculation for e+ e- --> 4 jets. We explain some modern techniques which have been used to calculate the one-loop amplitudes efficiently. We further report on the general purpose numerical program ``Mercutio'', which can be used to calculate any infrared safe four-jet quantity in electron-positron annihilation at next-to-leading order.
We provide a novel development in jet physics by predicting the energy profiles of light-quark and gluon jets in the framework of perturbative QCD. Resumming large logarithmic contributions to all orders in the coupling constant, our predictions are shown to agree well with Tevatron CDF and Large-Hadron-Collider CMS data. We also extend our resummation formalism to the invariant mass distributions of light-quark and gluon jets produced in hadron collisions. The predicted peak positions and heights in jet mass distributions are consistent with CDF data within uncertainties induced by parton dis…
We investigate small-x QCD effects in forward-jet production in deep inelastic scattering in the kinematic regime where the virtuality of the photon and the transverse momentum of the jet are two hard scales of about the same magnitude. We show that the data from HERA published by the H1 and ZEUS collaborations are well described by leading-logarithmic BFKL predictions. Parametrizations containing saturation effects expected to be relevant at higher energies also compare well to the present data. We extend our analysis to Mueller-Navelet jets at the LHC and discuss to what extent this observab…
We report on the calculation of the next-to-leading order QCD corrections to the production of W-boson pairs in association with a hard jet at the Tevatron and the LHC, which is an important source of background for Higgs and new-physics searches. The corrections stabilize the leading-order prediction for the cross section considerably, in particular if a veto against the emission of a second hard jet is applied.
We discuss non-perturbative QCD contributions to jet observables, computing their dependence on the jet radius R, and on the colour and transverse momentum of the parton initiating the jet. We show, using analytic QCD models of power corrections as well as Monte Carlo simulations, that hadronisation corrections grow at small values of R, behaving as 1/R, while underlying event contributions grow with the jet area as R^2. We highlight the connection between hadronisation corrections to jets and those for event shapes in e^+e^- and DIS; we note the limited dependence of our results on the choice…
We review recent developments in the QCD description of jet production and modification in reactions with heavy nuclei at relativistic energies. Our goal is to formulate a perturbative expansion in the presence of nuclear matter that allows to systematically improve the accuracy of the theoretical predictions. As an example, we present calculations of inclusive jet cross sections at RHIC, Z0/gamma*-tagged jet cross sections at the LHC, and jet shapes that include both next-to-leading order perturbative effects and the effects of the nuclear medium.
The highest exclusive jet multiplicity studied at LEP experiments is five. In this paper we compute the next-to-leading order QCD corrections to e+e- annihilation to five jets, essentially closing the (pure) perturbative QCD studies of exclusive jetty final states at LEP. We compare fixed-order perturbative results with ALEPH data. We estimate hadronization corrections to five-jet observables using the event generator SHERPA, which employs the CKKW procedure to combine a reliable perturbative treatment of high-multiplicity jet final states with parton showers. We show that a competitive value …
The solution of the equations for the generating functions of multiplicity distributions of quark and gluon jets in higher order 3NLO perturbative QCD is obtained. The non-perturbative effects are discussed as well. The results are compared to recent experimental data on mean multiplicities, their ratio and its slope, higher moments of the distributions.
We compute production rates for two, three, four and five jets in electron-positron annihilation at the third order in the QCD coupling constant. At this order, three-jet production is described to next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) in perturbation theory while the two-jet rate is obtained at next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order (N$^3$LO). Our results yield an improved perturbative description of the dependence of jet multiplicity on the jet resolution parameter, $\ycut$, particularly at small values of $\ycut$.
Theoretical predictions used in experimental analysis of LHC data have an inherent theoretical uncertainty associated to the relevant order in the perturbative expansion that the observable is computed. In this talk we briefly introduce and motivate the topic of QCD radiative corrections stressing the impact of including higher-order QCD effects in the theory predictions and in particular we consider two-loop QCD corrections. We present numerical results at NNLO for gluonic jet production where jets are reconstructed using the anti-$k_T$ jet algorithm from gluon-gluon and quark-antiquark scatt…
High precision analyses of experimental data for e+ e- annihillation, such as determination of jet rates or event shape observables, call for complete next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) perturbative QCD predictions. In this talk, we discuss the various ingredients entering the calculation of the NNLO corrections in e+ e- annihillation.
The study of the shape and sub-structure of high p_T jets produced in hadron collisions is becoming an increasingly important component of LHC phenomenology in the context of new particle discoveries. We study here the state of the art for masses of QCD jets in perturbation theory to all orders, up to next-to--leading logarithmic accuracy, with inclusion of non-global logarithms. We also study the precise role of the jet algorithm used to construct the jets and its impact on resummed predictions. Such analytical predictions, where available, offer an alternative to leading logarithmic predicti…
The measurement of the forward-backward asymmetries of heavy quarks provides one of the most precise determinations of $\sin^2θ_W$ in $Z$ decays. We discuss in detail the one--loop QCD radiative corrections to these asymmetries. Results are given for single heavy--quark jet asymmetries and asymmetries of the thrust axis, as well as for heavy--quark two--jet final states.}
Next-to-leading order QCD predictions for 1-jet and 2-jet cross sections in polarized deep inelastic scattering at HERA energies are presented. Whereas the QCD corrections to the total polarized cross section are very large, only moderate corrections are found for the dijet cross sections.
We calculate the cross section for $e^+ e^-$ annihilation into three jets for massive quarks at next-to-leading order in perturbative QCD, both on and off the $Z$ resonance. Our computation allows the implementation of any jet clustering algorithm. We give results for the three-jet cross section involving $b$ quarks for the JADE and Durham algorithm at c.m. energies $\sqrt s = m_Z$. We also discuss a three-jet observable that is sensitive to the mass of the $b$ quark.
We have calculated inclusive two-jet cross sections in next-to-leading order QCD for low Q^2 ep collisions superimposing direct and resolved contributions. Infrared and collinear singularities in the virtual and real contributions are cancelled with the phase space slicing method. Various inclusive two-jet distributions have been computed. The results are compared with recent data from the ZEUS collaboration at HERA.
I illustrate a general formalism based upon the subtraction method for the calculation of next-to-leading order QCD cross sections for any number of jets in any type of hard collisions. I discuss the implementation of this formalism in a numerical program which generates partonic kinematical configurations with an appropriate weight, thus allowing the definition of arbitrary jet algorithms and cuts matching the experimental setup at the last step of the computation. I present results obtained with computer codes which calculate one-jet and two-jet inclusive quantities in photon-hadron and hadr…
In these lectures we discuss the Balitsky, Fadin, Kuraev, and Lipatov (BFKL) theory, which resums the leading logarithmic contributions to the radiative corrections to parton scattering in the high-energy limit, and we apply it to hadronic two-jet production at large rapidity intervals.
We present results for the differential distributions of jets from non-leptonic decays of polarized top quarks within the Standard Model, including QCD radiative corrections. Our work extends existing results which are only available for semileptonic top quark decays at the parton level. For $t(\uparrow)$ -> b-jet + 2 light jets we compute in particular the QCD-corrected top-spin analysing power of the b-quark jet and the least energetic light jet. The dependence of the results on the choice of the jet recombination scheme is found to be small. In addition we compute the spin analysing power o…
The production of jets in charged-current deep-inelastic scattering (CC DIS) probes simultaneously the strong and the electroweak sectors of the Standard Model; its measurement provides important information on the quark flavour structure of the proton. We compute third-order (N3LO) perturbative QCD corrections to this process, fully differential in the jet and lepton kinematics. We observe a substantial reduction in the theory uncertainty, to sub-percent level throughout the relevant kinematical range, thus enabling precision phenomenology with jet observables.
We discuss jet substructure in recombination algorithms for QCD jets and single jets from heavy particle decays. We demonstrate that the jet algorithm can introduce significant systematic effects into the substructure. By characterizing these systematic effects and the substructure from QCD, splash-in, and heavy particle decays, we identify a technique, pruning, to better identify heavy particle decays into single jets and distinguish them from QCD jets. Pruning removes protojets typical of soft, wide angle radiation, improves the mass resolution of jets reconstructing a heavy particle decay, …
We present a new QCD description of the ATLAS jet veto measurement, using the Banfi-Marchesini-Smye equation to constrain the inter-jet QCD radiation. This equation resums emissions of soft gluons at large angles, at leading-logarithmic accuracy, and accounts for both the so-called Sudakov and non-global logarithms. We show that this approach is able to reproduce, with no fitting parameters, the fraction of high-pT forward/backward di-jet events which do not contain additional hard emissions in the inter-jet rapidity range. We also compute the gap fraction in fixed-order perturbation theory to…
