We introduce a new invariant, the \textit{positive idempotent group}, for strongly asymptotically dynamically convex contact manifolds. This invariant can be used to distinguish different contact structures. As an application, for any complex dimension $n>8$ and any positive integer $k$, we can construct $n-$dimensional Stein manifolds $V_0,V_1,\cdots,V_k$ such that $\tilde{H}_j(V_i)=0, j\neq n-1,n$, $V_i's$ are almost symplectomorphic, their boundaries are in the same almost contact class but not contactomorphic.
We give an algorithm which produces infinitely many pairwise exotic Stein fillings of the same contact 3-manifolds, applying positive allowable Lefschetz fibrations over the disk. As a corollary, for a large class of Stein fillings, we realize the topological invariants (i.e. fundamental group, homology group, homology group of the boundary, and intersection form) of each filling as those of infinitely many pairwise exotic Stein fillings. Furthermore, applying the algorithm, we produce various contact 3-manifolds of support genus one each of which admits infinitely many pairwise exotic Stein f…
It is known that the only Stein filling of the standard contact structure on S^3 is B^4. In this paper, we construct simply connected exotic compact Stein 4-manifold pairs for any Betti number $b_2 \geq 1$; we do this by enlarging corks and plugs.
We show that there exist infinitely many simply connected compact Stein 4-manifolds with b_2=2 such that they are all homeomorhic but mutually non-diffeomorphic, and they are Stein fillings of the same contact 3-manifold on their boundaries. We also describe their handlebody pictures.
In a recent paper of Akhmedov, Etnyre, Mark and Smith, it was shown that there exist infinitely many contact Seifert fibered 3-manifolds each of which admits infinitely many exotic (homeomorphic but pairwise non-diffeomorphic) simply-connected Stein fillings. Here we extend this result to a larger set of contact Seifert fibered 3-manifolds with many singular fibers and observe that these 3-manifolds are singularity links. In addition, we prove that the contact structures induced by the Stein fillings are the canonical contact structures on these singularity links. As a consequence, we verify a…
From any 4-dimensional oriented handlebody X without 3- and 4-handles and with b_2>0, we construct arbitrary many compact Stein 4-manifolds which are mutually homeomorphic but not diffeomorphic to each other, so that their topological invariants (their fundamental groups, homology groups, boundary homology groups, and intersection forms) coincide with those of X. We also discuss the induced contact structures on their boundaries. Furthermore, for any smooth 4-manifold pair (Z,Y) such that the complement Z-intY is a handlebody without 3- and 4-handles and with b_2>0, we construct arbitrary many…
For any finitely presentable group $G$, we show the existence of an isolated complex surface singularity link which admits infinitely many exotic Stein fillings such that the fundamental group of each filling is isomorphic to $G$. We also provide an infinite family of closed exotic smooth four-manifolds with the fundamental group $G$ such that each member of the family admits a non-holomorphic Lefschetz fibration over the two-sphere.
We construct a contact 5-manifold supported by infinitely many distinct open books with the identity monodromy and pairwise exotic Stein pages (i.e. pages are pairwise homeomorphic but non-diffeomorphic Stein fillings of a fixed contact 3-manifold), moreover we describe a process of generating infinitely many such examples. In contrast to this result, on each of $\#_{n} S^{2}\times S^{3}$ and $\#_{n} S^{2}\tilde{\times} S^{3}$ $(n\geq 2)$ we construct infinitely many open books with pairwise exotic Stein pages (and identity monodromy) supporting mutually distinct contact structures.
We introduce a new generalization of Gompf nuclei and give applications. We construct infinitely many exotic smooth structures for a large class of compact 4-manifolds with boundary, regarding topological invariants. We prove that a large class of closed 3-manifolds (including disjoint unions of Stein fillable 3-manifolds) bound compact connected oriented 4-manifolds which admit infinitely many smooth structures. To detect smooth structures, we introduce a relative genus function. As a side result, we show that log transform and knot surgery of 4-manifolds do not admit any Stein structure, und…
It is known that there is a unique concordance class in the free homotopy class of $S^1\times pt \subset S^1 \times S^2$. The constructive proof of this fact is given by the second author. It turns out that all the concordances in this construction are invertible. The knots $K\subset S^{1}\times S^{2}$ with hyperbolic complements and trivial symmetry group are special interest here, because they can be used to generate absolutely exotic compact 4-manifolds by the recipe given by Akbulut and Ruberman. Here we built absolutely exotic manifold pairs by this construction, and show that this constr…
It is known that every compact Stein 4-manifolds can be embedded into a simply connected, minimal, closed, symplectic 4-manifold. By using this property, we discuss a new method of constructing corks. This method generates a large class of new corks including all the previously known ones. We prove that every one of these corks can knot infinitely many different ways in a closed smooth manifold, by showing that cork twisting along them gives different exotic smooth structures. We also give an example of infinitely many disjoint embeddings of a fixed cork into a non-compact 4-manifold which pro…
We show that, under a certain condition, contact 5-manifolds can `coarsely' distinguish smooth structures on compact Stein 4-manifolds via contact open books. We also give a simple sufficient condition for an infinite family of Stein 4-manifolds to have an infinite subfamily of pairwise non-diffeomorphic Stein 4-manifolds. The proofs rely on the adjunction inequality. We remark that there are various examples of infinitely many pairwise exotic Stein 4-manifolds whose smooth structures can be distinguished by these results.
We characterize the closed, oriented, Seifert fibered 3-manifolds which are oriented boundaries of Stein manifolds. We also show that for this class of 3-manifolds the existence of Stein fillings is equivalent to the existence of symplectic fillings.
We reprove and strengthen some old difficult theorems of 4-manifolds by the aid of recently discovered modern tools, which involve contact structures on 3-manifolds, compact Stein domains, etc.
For a 4-manifold represented by a framed knot in $S^3$, it has been well known that the 4-manifold admits a Stein structure if the framing is less than the maximal Thurston-Bennequin number of the knot. In this paper, we prove either the converse of this fact is false or there exists a compact contractible oriented smooth 4-manifold (with Stein fillable boundary) admitting no Stein structure. Note that an exotic smooth structure on $S^4$ exists if and only if there exists a compact contractible oriented smooth 4-manifold with $S^3$ boundary admitting no Stein structure.
We give several criteria on a closed, oriented 3-manifold that will imply that it is the boundary of a (simply connected) 4-manifold that admits infinitely many distinct smooth structures. We also show that any weakly fillable contact 3-manifold, or contact 3-manifolds with non-vanishing Heegaard Floer invariant, is the boundary of a simply connected 4-manifolds that admits infinitely many distinct smooth structures each of which supports a symplectic structure with concave boundary, that is there are infinitely many exotic caps for any such contact manifold.
We show that, for each integer n, there exist infinitely many pairs of n-framed knots representing homeomorphic but non-diffeomorphic (Stein) 4-manifolds, which are the simplest possible exotic 4-manifolds regarding handlebody structures. To produce these examples, we introduce a new description of cork twists and utilize satellite maps. As an application, we produce knots with the same 0-surgery which are not concordant for any orientations, disproving the Akbulut-Kirby conjecture given in 1978.
We consider a fixed contact 3-manifold that admits infinitely many compact Stein fillings which are all homeomorphic but pairwise non-diffeomorphic. Each of these fillings gives rise to a closed contact 5-manifold described as a contact open book whose page is the filling at hand and whose monodromy is the identity symplectomorphism. We show that the resulting infinitely many contact 5-manifolds are all diffeomorphic but pairwise non-contactomorphic. Moreover, we explicitly determine these contact 5-manifolds.
We show that, for any two orientable smooth open 4-manifolds $X_0,X_1$ which are homeomorphic, their cotangent bundles $T^*X_0,T^*X_1$ are symplectomorphic with their canonical symplectic structure. In particular, for any smooth manifold $R$ homeomorphic to $\mathbb{R}^4$, the standard Stein structure on $T^*R$ is Stein homotopic to the standard Stein structure on $T^*\mathbb{R}^4 = \mathbb{R}^8$. We use this to show that any exotic $\mathbb{R}^4$ embeds in the standard symplectic $\mathbb{R}^8$ as a Lagrangian submanifold. As a corollary, we show that $\mathbb{R}^8$ has uncountably many smoot…
The aim of this paper is to address the following question: given a contact manifold $(Σ, ξ)$, what can be said about the aspherical symplectic manifolds $(W, ω)$ bounded by $(Σ, ξ)$ ? We first extend a theorem of Eliashberg, Floer and McDuff to prove that under suitable assumptions the map from $H_{*}(Σ)$ to $H_{*}(W)$ induced by inclusion is surjective. We then apply this method in the case of contact manifolds having a contact embedding in $ {\mathbb R}^{2n}$ or in a subcritical Stein manifold. We prove in many cases that the homology of the fillings is uniquely determined. Finally we use m…
The envelope of holomorphy of an arbitrary domain in a two-dimensional Stein manifold is identified with a connected component of the set of equivalence classes of analytic discs immersed into the Stein manifold with boundary in the domain. This implies, in particular, that for each of its points the envelope of holomorphy contains an embedded (non-singular) Riemann surface (and also an immersed analytic disc) passing through this point with boundary contained in the natural embedding of the original domain into its envelope of holomorphy. Moreover, it says, that analytic continuation to a nei…
We show that any closed oriented 3-manifold can be topologically embedded in some simply-connected closed symplectic 4-manifold, and that it can be made a smooth embedding after one stabilization. As a corollary of the proof we show that the homology cobordism group is generated by Stein fillable 3-manifolds. We also find obstructions on smooth embeddings: there exists 3-manifolds which cannot smoothly embed in a way that appropriately respect orientations in any symplectic manifold with weakly convex boundary. This embedding obstruction can also be used to detect exotic smooth structures on 4…
Building on work of Stolz, we prove for integers $0 \le d \le 3$ and $k>232$ that the boundaries of $(k-1)$-connected, almost closed $(2k+d)$-manifolds also bound parallelizable manifolds. Away from finitely many dimensions, this settles longstanding questions of C.T.C. Wall, determines all Stein fillable homotopy spheres, and proves a conjecture of Galatius and Randal-Williams. Implications are drawn for both the classification of highly connected manifolds and, via work of Kreck and Krannich, the calculation of their mapping class groups. Our technique is to recast the Galatius and Randal-Wi…
We initiate a study of positive multisections of Lefschetz fibrations via positive factorizations in framed mapping class groups of surfaces. Using our methods, one can effectively capture various interesting symplectic surfaces in symplectic 4-manifolds as multisections, such as Seiberg-Witten basic classes and exceptional classes, or branched loci of compact Stein surfaces as branched coverings of the 4-ball. Various problems regarding the topology of symplectic 4-manifolds, such as the smooth classification of symplectic Calabi-Yau 4-manifolds, can be translated to combinatorial problems in…
