We consider a fixed contact 3-manifold that admits infinitely many compact Stein fillings which are all homeomorphic but pairwise non-diffeomorphic. Each of these fillings gives rise to a closed contact 5-manifold described as a contact open book whose page is the filling at hand and whose monodromy is the identity symplectomorphism. We show that the resulting infinitely many contact 5-manifolds are all diffeomorphic but pairwise non-contactomorphic. Moreover, we explicitly determine these contact 5-manifolds.
We construct a contact 5-manifold supported by infinitely many distinct open books with the identity monodromy and pairwise exotic Stein pages (i.e. pages are pairwise homeomorphic but non-diffeomorphic Stein fillings of a fixed contact 3-manifold), moreover we describe a process of generating infinitely many such examples. In contrast to this result, on each of $\#_{n} S^{2}\times S^{3}$ and $\#_{n} S^{2}\tilde{\times} S^{3}$ $(n\geq 2)$ we construct infinitely many open books with pairwise exotic Stein pages (and identity monodromy) supporting mutually distinct contact structures.
We give an elementary topological obstruction for a manifold $M$ of dimension $2q{+}1 \geq 7$ to admit a contact open book with flexible Weinstein pages and $c_1(π_2(M)) = 0$: if the torsion subgroup of the $q$-th integral homology group is non-zero, then no such contact open book exists. We achieve this by proving that a symplectomorphism of a flexible Weinstein manifold acts trivially on cohomology. We also produce examples of non-trivial loops of flexible contact structures using related ideas.
Given any closed, connected, orientable $3$--manifold and integers $g\geq g(M), D > 0$, we show the existence of knots in $M$ whose genus $g$ bridge number is greater than $D$. These knots lie in a page of an open book decomposition of $M$, and the proof proceeds by examining the action of the map induced by the monodromy on the arc and curve complex of a page. A corollary is that there are Berge knots of arbitrarily large genus one bridge number.
Given two open books with equal pages we show the existence of an exact symplectic cobordism whose negative end equals the disjoint union of the contact manifolds associated to the given open books, and whose positive end induces the contact manifold associated to the open book with the same page and concatenated monodromy. Using similar methods we show the existence of strong fillings for contact manifolds associated with doubled open books, a certain class of fiber bundles over the circle obtained by performing the binding sum of two open books with equal pages and inverse monodromies. We prove that if a contact manifold $(M,ξ)$ is supported by a planar open book, then Euler characteristic and signature of any Stein filling of $(M,ξ)$ is bounded. We also prove a similar finiteness result for contact manifolds supported by spinal open books with planar pages. Moving beyond the geography of Stein fillings, we classify fillings of some lens spaces.
In this paper, we introduce the notions of an iterated planar Lefschetz fibration and an iterated planar open book decomposition and prove the Weinstein conjecture for contact manifolds supporting an open book that has iterated planar pages. For $n\geq 1$, we show that a $(2n+1)$-dimensional contact manifold $M$ supporting an iterated planar open book decomposition satisfies the Weinstein conjecture.
We use parameterized Morse theory on the pages of an open book decomposition to efficiently encode the contact topology in terms of a labelled graph on a disjoint union of tori (one per binding component). This construction allows us to generalize the notion of the front projection of a Legendrian knot from the standard contact $\mathbb{R}^3$ to arbitrary closed contact $3$-manifolds. We describe a complete set of moves on such front diagrams, extending the standard Legendrian Reidemeister moves, and we give a combinatorial formula to compute the Thurston-Bennequin number of a nullhomologous L…
We propose a generalization of the classical notions of plumbing and Murasugi summing operations to smooth manifolds of arbitrary dimensions, so that in this general context Gabai's credo "the Murasugi sum is a natural geometric operation" holds. In particular, we prove that the sum of the pages of two open books is again a page of an open book and that there is an associated summing operation of Morse maps. We conclude with several open questions relating this work with singularity theory or contact topology.
In this short note we construct examples of open books for 3-manifolds that show that arbitrarily high twisting of the monodromy of the open book does not guarantee maximality of the Euler characteristic of the pages among the open books supporting the same contact manifold. We find our examples of open books as the double branched covers of families of closed braids studied by Malyutin and Netsvetaev.
In this note, we discuss embeddings of $3$--manifolds via open books. First we show that every open book of every closed orientable $3$--manifold admits an open book embedding in any open book decompistion of $S^2 \times S^3$ and $S^2 \widetilde{\times} S^3$ with the page a disk bundle over $S^2$ and monodromy the identity. We then use open book embeddings to reprove that every closed orientable $3$--manifold embeds in $S^5.$
We introduce a new Legendrian isotopy invariant for any closed orientable Legendrian surface $L$ embedded in a closed contact $5$-manifold $(M, ξ)$ which admits an "admissable" open book $(B, f)$ (supporting $ξ$) for $L$. We show that to any such $L$ and a fixed page $X$, one can assign an integer $M\mathcal{P}_{X}(L)$, called "Relative Maximal Page Crossing Number of $L$ with respect to $X$", which is invariant under Legendrian isotopies of $L$. We also show that one can extend this to a page-free invariant, i.e., one can assign an integer $M\mathcal{P}_{(B,f)}(L)$, called "Absolute Maximal P…
We show that the monodromy of Klassen's genus two open book for $P^2 \times S^1$ is the $Y$-homeomorphism of Lickorish, which is also known as the crosscap slide. Similarly, we show that $S^2 \widetilde{\times} S^1$ admits a genus two open book whose monodromy is the crosscap transposition. Moreover, we show that each of $P^2 \times S^1$ and $S^2 \widetilde{\times} S^1$ admits infinitely many isomorphic genus two open books whose monodromies are mutually nonisotopic. Furthermore, we include a simple observation about the stable equivalence classes of open books for $P^2 \times S^1$ and $S^2 \w…
We prove that for any contact 3-manifold supported by a spinal open book decomposition with planar pages, there is a universal bound on the Euler characteristic and signature of its minimal symplectic fillings. The proof is an application of the spine removal surgery operation recently introduced in joint work of the authors with Van Horn-Morris.
We explain a connection between the algebraic and geometric properties of groups of contact transformations, open book decompositions, and flexible Legendrian embeddings. The main result is that, if a closed contact manifold $(V, ξ)$ has a supporting open book whose pages are flexible Weinstein manifolds, then the connected component $G$ of the identity in its automorphism group is a uniformly simple group: for every non-trivial element $g$, every other element is a product of at most $128(\dim V + 1)$ conjugates of $g^{\pm 1}$. In particular any conjugation invariant norm on this group is bou…
A flat plumbing basket is a Seifert surface consisting of a disk and bands contained in distinct pages of the disk open book decomposition of the 3-sphere. In this paper, we examine close connections between flat plumbing baskets and the contact structure supported by the open book. As an application we give lower bounds for the flat plumbing basket numbers and determine the flat plumbing basket numbers for various knots and links, including the torus links.
