The sheath formation in a weakly magnetized collisionless electronegative plasma consisting of electrons, negative and positive ions has been numerically investigated using the hydrodynamic equations. The electrons and negative ions are assumed to follow Boltzmann relation. A sheath formation criterion has been analytically derived. The paper focuses on studying the sheath structure by varying the electronegativity. It has been observed that the presence of negative ions has a substantial effect on the sheath structure. The observations made in the present work have profound significance on processing plasmas, especially in the semiconductor industry as well as in fusion studies.
The effect of a magnetic field on the characteristics of capacitively coupled radio frequency discharges is investigated and found to be substantial. A one-dimensional particle-in-cell simulation shows that geometrically symmetric discharges can be asymmetrized by applying a spatially inhomogeneous magnetic field. This effect is similar to the recently discovered electrical asymmetry effect. Both effects act independently, they can work in the same direction or compensate each other. Also the ion energy distribution functions at the electrodes are strongly affected by the magnetic field, altho…
A collisional magnetized plasma consisting of two temperature electrons has been investigated numerically to study the sheath structure and the ion energy flux to the wall. The low-temperature electrons are described by Maxwellian distribution, and the high-temperature electrons are described by truncated Maxwellian distribution. It has been observed that high-temperature electrons play a major role in the sheath potential as well as the ion energy flux to the wall. The presence of collision in the sheath has a significant effect on the properties of the sheath. The study of such a system can …
We present the first 3D particle-in-cell simulations of laser driven sheath-based ion acceleration in a kilotesla-level applied magnetic field. The applied magnetic field creates two distinct stages in the acceleration process associated with the time-evolving magnetization of the hot electron sheath and results in a focusing, magnetic field-directed ion source of multiple species with strongly enhanced energy and number. The benefits of adding the magnetic field are downplayed in 2D simulations, which strongly suggests the feasibility of observing magnetic field effects under experimentally r…
In this paper, the central concern is to analyze the influence of the forces that controls the ion dynamics inside a magnetized plasma sheath under collisionless conditions. The ionization effects are considered within the sheath. The magnetic field is tilted in x-z plane and makes an angle with the x-axis. The motivation of the paper is to see the effect of both field strength variation and the variation of the inclination angle on the force fields inside the sheath. The pitch length and pitch angle for the particle velocity field is also calculated and has been found to vary widely with the …
Dependencies of levitation position of positively charged fine-particles on plasma parameters are investigated. The charges on the particles become positive in a cross-field sheath between magnetized double plasmas with different potentials separated vertically by horizontal magnetic field, because ion current flowing from a lower high-potential plasma surpasses electron current coming across the magnetic field from an upper low-potential plasma. From measurement of the resonance frequency of the particles driven by external oscillating electric field, the charge on particle is estimated to be…
Rotating spokes commonly occur in partially magnetized plasmas devices. In this paper, the driving mechanism behind the formation of an m=1 rotating spoke mode in a magnetically enhanced hollow cathode arc discharge is investigated by means of 2D radial-azimuthal particle-in-cell/Monte Carlo collision simulations with a uniform axial magnetic field. We find that the formation of the spoke potential hump region can be explained as a result of the positive anode sheath collapse due to the lower hybrid type instability evolving into the long wavelength regime. It is shown that an initial short-wa…
Direct measurement of axial magnetic field in the PF-1000 dense plasma focus (DPF), and its reported correlation with neutron emission, call for a fresh look at previous reports of existence of axial magnetic field component in the DPF from other laboratories, and associated data suggesting toroidal directionality of fast ions participating in fusion reactions, with a view to understand the underlying physics. In this context, recent work dealing with application of the hyperbolic conservation law formalism to the DPF is extended in this paper to a curvilinear coordinate system, which reflects…
A low-pressure magnetized plasma is studied to find the dependency of sheath properties on ion-neutral collisions in presence of an inhomogeneous magnetic field. A self-consistent one-dimensional two-fluid hydrodynamic model is considered, and the system of equations is solved numerically. The study reveals that the width of the plasma sheath expands and space charge increases with collisions. The ion-neutral collisions and the inhomogeneous magnetic field restrict the ions to move towards the surface. The movement of the ions towards the wall can be controlled by choosing a suitable configura…
Energetic ions have been observed since the very first laser-plasma experiments.Their origin was found to be the charge separation of electrons heated by thelaser, which transfers energy to the ions accelerated in the field. The adventof ultra-intense lasers with pulse lengths in the femtosecond regime resulted inthe discovery of very energetic ions with characteristics quite different fromthose driven by long-pulse lasers. Discovered in the late 1990s, these ion beamshave become the focus of intense research worldwide, because of their uniqueproperties and high particle numbers. Based on thei…
A bounded plasma where the electrons impacting the walls produce more than one secondary on average is studied via particle-in-cell simulation. It is found that no classical Debye sheath or space-charge limited sheath exists. Ions are not drawn to the walls and electrons are not repelled. Hence the plasma electrons travel unobstructed to the walls, causing extreme particle and energy fluxes. Each wall has a positive charge, forming a small potential barrier or "inverse sheath" that pulls some secondaries back to the wall to maintain the zero current condition.
Microwave sheath-Voltage combination Plasma (MVP) is a high density plasma source and can be used as a suitable plasma processing device (e.g., ionized physical vapor deposition). In the present report, the temporal behavior of an argon MVP sustained along a direct-current biased Ti rod is investigated. Two plasma modes are observed, one is an "oxidized state" (OS) at the early time of the microwave plasma and the other is "ionized sputter state" (ISS) at the later times. Transition of the plasma from OS to ISS, results a prominent change in the visible color of the plasma, resulting from a si…
Plasma sheath is the non-neutral space charge region that isolates bulk plasma from boundary. Radio-frequency (RF) sheathes are formed when applying RF voltage to electrodes. Generally, applied bias is mainly consumed by RF sheath which shields external field. Here we report first evidence that intense boundary emission destroys normal RF sheath and establishes a novel type of RF plasma where external bias is consumed by bulk plasma instead of sheath. Ions are naturally confined while plasma electrons are unobstructed, generating strong RF current in entire plasma, combined with unique particl…
Employing an attenuated oscillation method, the anisotropic interaction force between two vertically aligned dust particles located in the sheath of a complex plasma was measured experimentally based on a linear approximation to the interaction force. Experimental data shows that although both particles experience a repulsive interaction force, the upper particle experiences a stronger magnitude force than does the lower. This result can be explained by the ion wakefield since the lower particle resides within the ion wakefield generated by the streaming ions passing through the sheath and aro…
Ion acceleration due to the interaction between a short high-intensity laser pulse and a moderately overdense plasma target is studied using Eulerian Vlasov-Maxwell simulations. The effects of variations in the plasma density profile and laser pulse parameters are investigated, and the interplay of collisionless shock and target normal sheath acceleration is analyzed. It is shown that the use of a layered-target with a combination of light and heavy ions, on the front and rear side respectively, yields a strong quasi-static sheath-field on the rear side of the heavy-ion part of the target. Thi…
Scaling laws for the transport and heating of trace heavy ions in low-frequency, magnetized plasma turbulence are derived and compared with direct numerical simulations. The predicted dependences of turbulent fluxes and heating on ion charge and mass number are found to agree with numerical results for both stationary and differentially rotating plasmas. Heavy ion momentum transport is found to increase with mass, and heavy ions are found to be preferentially heated, implying a mass-dependent ion temperature for very weakly collisional plasmas and for partially-ionized heavy ions in strongly r…
Particle-in-cell direct simulation Monte Carlo simulations reveal that ion-acoustic instabilities excited in presheaths can cause significant ion heating. Ion-acoustic instabilities are excited by the ion flow toward a sheath when the neutral gas pressure is small enough and the electron temperature is large enough. A series of 1D simulations were conducted in which neutral plasma (electrons and ions) was uniformly sourced with an ion temperature of 0.026 eV and different electron temperatures (0.1 - 50 eV). Ion heating was observed when the electron-to-ion temperature ratio exceeded the minim…
Biased electrodes are common components of plasma sources and diagnostics. The plasma-electrode interaction is mediated by an intervening sheath structure that influences properties of the electrons and ions contacting the electrode surface, as well as how the electrode influences properties of the bulk plasma. A rich variety of sheath structures have been observed, including ion sheaths, electron sheaths, double sheaths, double layers, anode glow, and fireballs. These represent complex self-organized responses of the plasma that depend not only on the local influence of the electrode, but als…
Wakefield oscillations created by the ion wakefield existing below a dust particle within the plasma sheath generated above a powered lower electrode in a GEC rf reference cell carry information about the plasma sheath, the dust particle charge and the speed of the streaming ions. An experimental method to investigate such wakefield oscillations is discussed.
This paper studies the coherent acceleration of ions interacting with two electrostatic waves in a uniform magnetic field B0. This is a generalization of an earlier analysis of waves propagating perpendicularly to B0 to include the effect of wavenumbers along B0. The Lie transformation technique is used to develop a perturbation theory describing the ion motion, and results are compared with numerical solutions of the complete equations of motion. Coherent energization occurs when the Doppler-shifted wave frequencies differ by nearly an integer multiple of the ion cyclotron frequency. When the…
Electron sheaths are commonly found near Langmuir probes collecting the electron saturation current. The common assumption is that the probe collects the random flux of electrons incident on the sheath, which tacitly implies that there is no electron presheath and that the flux collected is due to a velocity space truncation of the electron velocity distribution function (EVDF). This work provides a dedicated theory of electron sheaths, which suggests that they are not so simple. Motivated by EVDFs observed in Particle-In-Cell (PIC) simulations, a 1D model for the electron sheath and presheath…
A systematic numerical study of wake potential and ion density distribution of a single grain in streaming ions under the influence of the magnetic field applied along flow is presented. Strong magnetic field introduces ion focus depletion behind grain facilitating the entrance of electrons far away in the downstream towards the grain. It is shown that the magnetic field suppresses the amplitude of wake potential and modifies the ion density distribution substantially. The wake peak potential and position characteristics, and density distribution of plasma constituents in the presence of magne…
Bandyopadhyay and Das [Phys. Plasmas, 9, 465-473, 2002] have derived a nonlinear macroscopic evolution equation for ion acoustic wave in a magnetized plasma consisting of warm adiabatic ions and non-thermal electrons including the effect of Landau damping. In that paper they have also derived the corresponding nonlinear evolution equation when coefficient of the nonlinear term of the above mentioned macroscopic evolution equation vanishes, the nonlinear behaviour of the ion acoustic wave is described by a modified macroscopic evolution equation. But they have not considered the case when the c…
Micron-sized dust grains have been successfully employed as non-perturbative probes to measure variations in plasma conditions on small spatial scales, such as those found in plasma sheaths. The dynamics of the grains can be used to map the forces due to electric fields present in the sheath, but the particle charge and electric field are difficult to measure independently. The problem is further complicated by the ion wake field which develops downstream of the dust grains in a flowing plasma. Within a sheath, ions are accelerated towards the charged boundary, and this ion flow creates a posi…
The dispersion relation of kinetic Alfvén wave in inertial regime is studied in a three component non-degenerate streaming plasma. A lin- ear dispersion relation using fluid- Vlasov equation for quantum plasma is also derived. The quantum correction CQ raised due to the insertion of Bohm potential in Vlasov model causes the suppression in the Alfven wave frequency and the growth rates of instability. A number of analytical expressions are derived for various modes of propagation. It is also found that many system parameters, i.e, streaming velocity, dust charge, num- ber density and quantum co…
The generalized Bohm criterion is revisited in the context of incorporating kinetic effects of the electron and ion distribution functions into the theory. The underlying assumptions and results of two different approaches are compared: The conventional `kinetic Bohm criterion' and a fluid-moment hierarchy approach. The former is based on the asymptotic limit of an infinitely thin sheath ($λ_D/l =0$), whereas the latter is based on a perturbative expansion of a sheath that is thin compared to the plasma ($λ_D/l \ll 1$). Here $λ_D$ is the Debye length, which characterizes the sheath length scal…
Target normal sheath acceleration (TNSA) is a method employed in laser--matter interaction experiments to accelerate light ions (usually protons). Laser setups with durations of a few 10 fs and relatively low intensity contrasts observe plateau regions in their ion energy spectra when shooting on thin foil targets with thicknesses of order 10 $\mathrmμ$m. In this paper we identify a mechanism which explains this phenomenon using one dimensional particle-in-cell simulations. Fast electrons generated from the laser interaction recirculate back and forth through the target, giving rise to time-os…
A scheme to generate magnetized relativistic plasmas in laboratory is proposed. It is based on interaction of ultra-high-intensity sub-picosecond laser pulses with few-micron thick foils or films. By means of Particle-In-Cell simulations it is shown that energetic electrons produced by the laser and evacuated at the rear of the target trigger an expansion of the target and builds up a strong azimuthal magnetic field. It is shown that in the expanding plasma sheath a ratio of the magnetic pressure and the electron rest-mass energy density exceeds unity whereas a the plasma pressure is lower tha…
The derivation of the helicon dispersion relation for a uniform plasma with stationary ions subject to a constant background magnetic field is reexamined in terms of the potential formulation of electrodynamics. Under the same conditions considered by the standard derivation, the nonlinear self-coupling between the perturbed electron flow and the potential it generates is addressed. The plane wave solution for general propagation vector is determined for all frequencies and expressed in terms of a vector phasor. The behavior of the solution as described in vacuum units depends upon the ratio o…
The potential difference between a floating emitting surface and the plasma surrounding it has been described by several sheath models, including the space-charge-limited sheath, the electron sheath with high emission current, and the inverse sheath produced by charge-exchange ion trapping. Our measurements reveal that each of these models has its own regime of validity. We determine the potential of an emissive filament relative to the plasma potential, emphasizing variations in emitted current density and neutral particle density. The potential of a filament in a diffuse plasma is first show…
Ultra intense lasers are a promising source of energetic ions for various applications. An interesting approach described in Ferri et al. 2019 argues from Particle-in-Cell simulations that using two laser pulses of half energy (half intensity) arriving with close to 45 degrees angle of incidence is significantly more effective at accelerating ions than one pulse at full energy (full intensity). For a variety of reasons, at the time of this writing there has not yet been a true experimental confirmation of this enhancement. In this paper we perform 2D Particle-in-Cell simulations to examine if …
In this work, we examine sheath formation in the presence of bias potentials in the current saturation regime for pulsed power fusion experiments. It is important to understand how the particle and heat fluxes at the wall may impact the wall material and affect electrode degradation. Simulations are performed using the 1X-1V Boltzmann-Poisson system for a proton-electron plasma in the presence of bias potentials ranging from 0 to 10 kV. The results indicate that the sheath near the high potential wall remains generally the same as that of a classical sheath without the presence of a bias poten…
It is widely assumed that thermionic current flow through a plasma is limited by a "space-charge limited" (SCL) cathode sheath that consumes the hot cathode's negative bias and accelerates upstream ions into the cathode. Here, we formulate a fundamentally different current-limited mode. In the "inverse" mode, the potentials of both electrodes are above the plasma potential, so that the plasma ions are confined. The bias is consumed by the anode sheath. There is no potential gradient in the neutral plasma region from resistivity or presheath. The inverse cathode sheath pulls some thermoelectron…
A theoretical investigation has been carried out to examine the ion-acoustic shock waves (IASHWs) in a magnetized degenerate quantum plasma system containing inertialess ultra-relativistically degenerate electrons, and inertial non-relativistic positively charged heavy and light ions. The Burgers' equation is derived by employing reductive perturbation method. It can be seen that under consideration of non-relativistic positively charged heavy and light ions, the plasma model supports only positive electrostatic shock structure. It is also observed that the charge state and number density of t…
In this study, the physics of sheath formation in a collisional two-electron temperature plasma in the presence of an oblique external magnetic field has been investigated. At first, a comparative study among the fluid electron model, Boltzmann electron model and the nonextensive electron model has been carried out and a suitable range of nonextensive parameter q has been predicted. In the latter part, a collisional two-electron temperature plasma is considered. Both the hot and cold electron densities are described using the non-extensive distribution whereas cold ions are described by the fl…
Electron cooling is a well-established method to improve the phase space quality of ion beams in storage rings. In the common rest frame of the ion and the electron beam the ion is subjected to a drag force and it experiences a loss or a gain of energy which eventually reduces the energy spread of the ion beam. A calculation of this process is complicated as the electron velocity distribution is anisotropic and the cooling process takes place in a magnetic field which guides the electrons. In this paper the cooling force is calculated in a model of binary collisions (BC) between ions and magne…
This paper describes the surface environment of the dense plasma arcs that damage rf accelerators, tokamaks and other high gradient structures. We simulate the dense, non-ideal plasma sheath near a metallic surface using Molecular Dynamics (MD) to evaluate sheaths in the non-Debye region for high density, low temperature plasmas. We use direct two-component MD simulations where the interactions between all electrons and ions are computed explicitly. We find that the non-Debye sheath can be extrapolated from the Debye sheath parameters with small corrections. We find that these parameters are r…
The form of a sheath near a small electrode, with bias changing from below to above the plasma potential is studied using 2D particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations. Five cases are studied: (A) an electrode biased more than the electron temperature ($T_e/e$) below the plasma potential, (B) an electrode biased less than $T_e/2e$ below the plasma potential, (C) an electrode biased nearly at the plasma potential, (D) an electrode biased more than $T_i/2e$ but less than $T_e/2e$ above the plasma potential, and (E) an electrode biased much greater than $T_e/2e$ above the plasma potential. In case (A), t…
This paper develops a unified linear theory of local cross-field plasma instabilities, such as the Farley-Buneman, electron thermal, and ion thermal instabilities, in collisional plasmas with fully or partially unmagnetized multi-species ions. Collisional lasma instabilities in low-ionized, highly dissipative, weakly magnetized plasmas play an important role in the lower Earth's ionosphere and may be of importance in other planet ionospheres, star atmospheres, cometary tails, molecular clouds, accretion disks, etc. In the solar chromosphere, macroscopic effects of collisional plasma instabilit…
This paper proposes a model that expands Godyak's collisional sheath model to the case of hot electrodes (anode or cathode) with thermionic electron emission. In the model, the electrodes are assumed to be made from refractory metals and, consequently, the erosion of the electrodes is small and can be neglected. In the frame of two temperature thermal plasma modeling, this model allows self-consistent calculation of the sheath potential drop, the Schottky correction factor for the work function of the wall material, the thermionic electron current density, and the heat fluxes of the charged pa…
The results of a theoretical investigation of the energy loss of charged particles in a magnetized classical plasma due to the electric field fluctuations are reported. The energy loss for a test particle is calculated through the linear-response theory. At vanishing magnetic field the electric field fluctuations lead to an energy gain of the charged particle for all velocities. It has been shown that in the presence of strong magnetic field this effect occurs only at low-velocities. In the opposite case of high-velocities the test particle systematically loses its energy due to the interactio…
The nonlinear propagation of electrostatic dust-acoustic (DA) waves in a magnetized dusty plasma consisting of negatively charged mobile dusts, nonthermal fast electrons and trapped ions with vortex-like distribution is studied. Using the reductive perturbation technique, a Korteweg-de Vries (KdV)-like equation is derived which governs the dynamics of the small-amplitude solitary waves in a magnetized dusty nonthermal plasma. It is found that due to the dust thermal pressure, there exists a critical value $(β_c)$ of the nothermal parameter $β~(>1)$, denoting the percentage of energetic electro…
The speed at which ions enter a sheath is a fundamental property of a plasma that also provides a useful boundary condition in modeling. A recent theory proposed that this can be significantly influenced by an instability-enhanced friction force arising from two-stream instabilities in the presheath when multiple ion species are present. Although experiments appeared to confirm this theory, recent particle simulations have brought it into question. We reconcile this controversy using direct numerical solutions of the dispersion relation, which show that there is a dependence on the electron-io…
Analysis of driven dust vortex flow is presented in a weakly magnetized plasma. The 2D hydrodynamic model is applied to the confined dust cloud in a non-uniform magnetic field in order to recover the dust vortex flow driven in a conservative force field setup, in absence of any non-conservative fields or dust charge variation. Although the time independent electric and magnetic fields included in the analysis provide conservative forcing mechanisms, when the a drift based mechanism, recently observed in a dusty plasma experiment by [M. Puttscher and A. Melzer, Physics of Plasmas, 21,123704(201…
The electrostatic potential of a moving dust grain in a complex plasma with magnetized ions is computed using linear response theory, thereby extending our previous work for unmagnetized plasmas [P. Ludwig et al., New J. Phys. 14, 053016 (2012)]. In addition to the magnetic field, our approach accounts for a finite ion temperature as well as ion-neutral collisions. Our recently introduced code \texttt{Kielstream} is used for an efficient calculation of the dust potential. Increasing the magnetization of the ions, we find that the shape of the potential crucially depends on the Mach number $M$.…
