Micron-sized dust grains have been successfully employed as non-perturbative probes to measure variations in plasma conditions on small spatial scales, such as those found in plasma sheaths. The dynamics of the grains can be used to map the forces due to electric fields present in the sheath, but the particle charge and electric field are difficult to measure independently. The problem is further complicated by the ion wake field which develops downstream of the dust grains in a flowing plasma. Within a sheath, ions are accelerated towards the charged boundary, and this ion flow creates a positively-charged spatial region downstream of the dust grain, called the ion wake. The ion wake in turn modifies the interaction potential between the charged grains. Here we use a molecular dynamics simulation of ion flow past dust grains to investigate the interaction between the charged dust particles and ions. The charging and dynamics of the grains are coupled self-consistently and derived from the ion-dust interactions, allowing for detailed analysis of the wakefield-mediated interaction as the structural configuration of the dust grains changes. The decharging of a dust grain as it moves through the wake of an upstream particle and the attractive ion wakefield force are mapped for a range of ion flow speeds.
Numerical simulations of monolayer dust crystals in an RF complex plasma were performed to examine the crystal structure and quantify the effects of including the collision enhanced ion current in the charging model. A GEC cell similar to a previous experimental work was modeled for a range of RF voltages, using a continuum description for the plasma and a particle description for dust grains. The time history of each dust grain was monitored. The dust charge was computed using both the OML and the collision enhanced charging (CEC) model applicable to the sheath region. The dust model accounte…
Wakefield oscillations created by the ion wakefield existing below a dust particle within the plasma sheath generated above a powered lower electrode in a GEC rf reference cell carry information about the plasma sheath, the dust particle charge and the speed of the streaming ions. An experimental method to investigate such wakefield oscillations is discussed.
A three-dimensional (3-D), self-consistent code is employed to solve for the static potential structure surrounding a spacecraft in a high photoelectron environment. The numerical solutions show that, under certain conditions, a spacecraft can take on a negative potential in spite of strong photoelectron currents. The negative potential is due to an electrostatic barrier near the surface of the spacecraft that can reflect a large fraction of the photoelectron flux back to the spacecraft. This electrostatic barrier forms if (1) the photoelectron density at the surface of the spacecraft greatly …
Charging of dust grains in low-pressure plasmas is reviewed critically. A theory based on the Fokker-Planck equation and orbital motion limited approximation is proposed. The theory predicts that dust grains can acquire a positive charge in low-pressure electropositive plasmas having a sufficiently high plasma potential, in agreement with experimental observations. It is also shown that variations in the plasma potential (electron temperature) can lead to spatial regions in which grains have opposite charges.
A general derivation of the charging equation of a dust grain is presented, and indicated where and when it can be used. A problem of linear fluctuations of charges on the surface of the dust grain is discussed.
In this paper, the structural property of complex plasma and self-diffusion coefficient of dust particles in presence of such wake potential have been investigated using Langevin dynamics simulation in the subsonic regime of ion flow. The study reveals that the self-diffusion of dust grains is strongly affected by ion flow and it changes its character in the wake potential dominant to the Debye-Hückel potential dominant regimes. The dependence of self-diffusion coefficient on parameters such as neutral pressure, dust size, ion flow velocity, Coulomb coupling parameter have been calculated for …
An interaction of upstream extra particles with a monolayer highly-ordered complex plasma is studied. A principally new abnormal turbulent wake formed behind the supersonic upstream particle is discovered. An anomalous type of the turbulence wake clearly manifests in anomalously low thermal diffusivity and two orders of magnitude larger particle kinetic temperature compared to that of the 'normal' wake (Mach cone) observed by Du et al [Europhys. Lett. 99, 55001 (2012)].
Dust particles often form vertical chains due to the influence of the wakefield produced by the streaming ions in the plasma sheath. These particle chains are proving useful as a unique diagnostic tool for investigating the physics behind the basic properties of the ion wakefield within the plasma sheath. In this paper, an experimental method is presented for investigating the ion wakefield which employs a new oscillation technique designed to perturb a two-particle vertical chain. Using this technique, damped free fall oscillations are generated via an external DC bias to the lower electrode.…
The dust charging processes in the collections of electrons and ions in the nonequilibrium dusty plasma with power-law distributions are investigated on the basic of a new q-distribution function theory in nonextensive statistics. Electrons and ions obey the power-law distributions and are with q-parameters different from each other. We derive the generalized formulae for the dust charging currents in which the nonextensive effects play roles. Further we investigate the dust charging processes taking place in the homogeneous dusty plasma where only the particle velocities are power-law distrib…
The charging of conducting or alternatively insulating dust grains in a supersonic plasma flow with a directed photon flux is studied by the particle-in-cell method. The electron emission modifies the surface charge distribution on a grain and in the surrounding plasma. The charge and potential distributions on and around a dust grain are studied for different photon fluxes and different angles of the incident unidirectional photons with respect to the plasma flow velocity vector. Continuous and pulsed radiations are considered. We show that photoemission allows controlling the charge on condu…
We report a theoretical investigation of DL mode (Dust Lattice) in 2D Yukawa crystal in presence of asymmetric ion flow and external magnetic field perpendicular to the crystal plane. Two mutually perpendicular modes are found to be coupled due to Lorentz force. Interaction among the dust grains along vertical direction is strongly affected due to the formation of ion-wake. This causes anisotropy in interaction strength along two mutually perpendicular directions. Both hybrid modes are studied as characteristics of different ion flow speed and magnetic field strength. The study shows a fluctua…
The role of hot electrons in charging of dust grains is investigated in a two-temperature hydrogen plasma. A variety of dust particles are introduced into the system and secondary electron emission (SEE) from each of the dust grains has been reported. A cylindrical Langmuir probe is used for determining the plasma parameters and a Faraday cup is connected to an electrometer in order to measure the dust current. The electrometer readings confirm the electron emission from the dust and SEE is observed from the tungsten dust in a low-pressure experimental plasma device for the first time.
A kinetic equation for dust particles with a new kinetic variable - the mass of grains - is suggested for the description of processes with changing mass in dusty plasmas and neutral systems.
Dust particulates immersed in a quasineutral plasma can emit electrons in several important applications. Once electron emission becomes strong enough, the dust enters the positively charged regime where the conventional Orbital-Motion-Limited (OML) theory can break down due to potential well effects on trapped electrons. A minimal modification of the trapped-passing boundary approximation in the so-called OML$^+$ approach is shown to accurately predict the dust charge and heat collection flux for a wide range of dust size and temperature.
The foundational theory for dusty plasmas is the dust charging theory that provides the dust potential and charge arising from the dust interaction with a plasma. The most widely used dust charging theory for negatively charged dust particles is the so-called orbital motion limited (OML) theory, which predicts the dust potential and heat collection accurately for a variety of applications, but was previously found to be incapable of evaluating the dust charge and plasma response in any situation. Here we report a revised OML formulation that is able to predict the plasma response and hence the…
It is well known that the form of grain size distribution strongly influences the linear dielectric response of a dusty plasma. In previous results [IEEE Trans. Plasma Sci. 29, 182 (2001)], it was shown that for a class of size distributions, there is an equivalence to a Lorentzian distribution of mono-sized particles. The electrostatic response to a slowly moving test charge, using a second order approximation can then be found [Phys. Lett. A 305, 79 (2002)]. It is also well known [Phys. Plasmas 10, 3484 (2003)] that the dynamical charging of grains in a dusty plasma enhances the shielding of…
We study the secondary electron emissions induced by the impact of electrons on dust grains and the resulting dust charging processes in the nonequilibrium dusty plasma with power-law distributions. We derive new expressions of the secondary emitted electron flux and the dust charging currents that are generalized by the power-law q-distributions, where the nonlinear core functions are numerically studied for the nonextensive parameter q. Our numerical analyses show that the power-law q-distribution of the primary electrons has a significant effect on the secondary emitted electron flux as wel…
Two-dimensional microparticle crystals can be formed in the sheath of a gas discharge plasma. Ions from the bulk plasma are accelerated in the sheath electric field, flowing past the grains to create a positive ion wake downstream from the grains. Interaction between the ion wake and neighboring grains creates additional coupling between oscillation modes and can trigger mode-coupling instability (MCI). Recent experiments have shown that at a fixed discharge power there are threshold pressures above and below which the monolayer always crystallizes or melts, respectively. The melting is due to…
The deflection of interstellar dust grains in the magnetic field near the heliopause has been investigated based on the assumption that interstellar grains are homogeneous spheres. However, remote observations have shown that interstellar grains are more likely to be composites of a large number of subunits. This has profound significance when interpreting data obtained through in-situ measurements, for the deflection of interstellar grains depends on their charge-to-mass ratio, and aggregates acquire different surface charges from spheres due to their complex structure. In this paper, the cha…
The theoretical description of complex (dusty) plasmas requires multiscale concepts that adequately incorporate the correlated interplay of streaming electrons and ions, neutrals, and dust grains. Knowing the effective dust-dust interaction, the multiscale problem can be effectively reduced to a one-component plasma model of the dust subsystem. The goal of the present publication is a systematic evaluation of the electrostatic potential distribution around a dust grain in the presence of a streaming plasma environment by means of two complementary approaches: (i) a high precision computation o…
Combining a particle-particle, particle-cluster and cluster-cluster agglomeration model with an aggregate charging model, the coagulation and charging of dust particles in various plasma environments relevant for proto-planetary disks have been investigated. The results show that charged aggregates tend to grow by adding small particles and clusters to larger particles and clusters, leading to greater sizes and masses as compared to neutral aggregates, for the same number of monomers in the aggregate. In addition, aggregates coagulating in a Lorentzian plasma (containing a larger fraction of h…
Low frequency longitudinal wave instability in magnetized high correlation dusty plasmas is investigated. The dust charging relaxation is taken into account. It is found that the instablity of wave is determined significantly by the frequency of wave, the dust charging relaxation, the shear viscosity and viscoelastic relaxation time, the coupling parameter of high correlation of dust as well the strength of magnetic field.
The spontaneous rotation of small dust clusters confined inside a cubical glass box in the sheath of a complex plasma was observed in experiment. Due to strong coupling between the dust particles, these clusters behave like a rigid-body where cluster rotation is contingent upon their configuration and symmetry. By evaluating the effects of distinct contributing forces, it is postulated that the rotation observed is driven by the net torque exerted on the cluster by the ion wake force. The configuration and symmetry of a cluster determines whether the net torque induced by the ion wake force is…
The confinement provided by a glass box is proving ideal for the formation of vertically aligned structures and a convenient method for controlling the number of dust particles comprising these dust structures, as well as their size and shape. In this paper, the electronic confinement of the glass box is mapped and the particle interactions between the particle pairs inside the glass box are measured. The ion-wake field is shown to exist within the glass box and its vertical and horizontal extent is measured.
The Orbital-Motion-Limited (OML) theory has been modified to predict the dust charge and the results were contrasted with the Whipple approximation [Tang and Delzanno, Phys. Plasmas 21, 123708 (2014)]. To further establish its regime of applicability, in this paper the OML predictions (for a non-electron-emitting, spherical dust grain at rest in a collisionless, unmagnetized plasma) are compared with Particle-In-Cell simulations that retain the absorption radius effect. It is found that for large dust grain radius $r_d$ relative to the plasma Debye length $λ_D$, the revised OML theory remains …
The charging of spinning insulating objects by plasma and photoemission is studied with the particle-in-cell method. Unidirectional photon flux, different angular velocities of the object, and different plasma flow speeds are considered. Photoemission can lead to a positive total charge and electric dipole moment on the object. The spinning of the object redistributes the surface charge. The total object charge oscillates in time with the period matching the period of the object rotation. Plasma potential and density in the vicinity of the object oscillate with the same frequency. The plasma i…
The Debye shielding of a charge immersed in a flowing plasma is an old classic problem in plasma physics. It has been given renewed attention in the last two decades in view of experiments with complex plasmas, where charged dust particles are often levitated in a region with strong ion flow. Efforts to describe the shielding of the dust particles in such conditions have been focused on the homogeneous plasma approximation, which ignores the substantial inhomogeneity of the levitation region. We address the role of the plasma inhomogeneity by rigorously calculating the point charge potential i…
An approach was developed to describe the first passage time (FPT) in multistep stochastic processes with discrete states governed by a master equation (ME). The approach is an extension of the totally absorbing boundary approach given for calculation of FPT in one-step processes (Van Kampen 2007) to include multistep processes where jumps are not restricted to adjacent sites. In addition, a Fokker-Planck equation (FPE) was derived from the multistep ME, assuming the continuity of the state variable. The developed approach and an FPE based approach (Gardiner 2004) were used to find the mean fi…
We consider the influence of dust charge fluctuations on damping of the dust-ion-acoustic waves. It is assumed that all grains have equal masses but charges are not constant in time - they may fluctuate in time. The dust charges are not really independent of the variations in the plasma potentials. All modes will influence the charging mechanism, and feedback will lead to several new interesting and unexpected phenomena. The charging of the grains depends on local plasma characteristics. If the waves disturb these characteristic, then charging of the grains is affected and the grain charge is …
Charged dust particles form structures which are extended in the vertical direction in the electrode sheath of a rf discharge when confined within a glass box. The charge on each particle as a function of height varies due to the changing plasma conditions and the wakefield of upstream particles. Here an analysis of the equilibrium state of chains of varying number of particles is analyzed to determine the charge on each particle within a vertically extended chain as well as the magnitude of the positive wakefield charge.
In plasma wakefield accelerators, the wave excited in the plasma eventually breaks and leaves behind slowly changing fields and currents that perturb the ion density background. We study this process numerically using the example of a FACET experiment where the wave is excited by an electron bunch in the bubble regime in a radially bounded plasma. Four physical effects underlie the dynamics of ions: (1) attraction of ions toward the axis by the fields of the driver and the wave, resulting in formation of a density peak, (2) generation of ion-acoustic solitons following the decay of the density…
There is a quickly increasing wealth of experimental data on so-called dusty plasmas i. e. ionized gases or usual plasmas that contain micron sized charged particles. Interest in these structures is driven both by their importance in many astrophysical as well as commercial situations. Among them are linear and nonlinear wave phenomena. We consider the influence of dust charge fluctuations on stability of the ion-acoustic waves when the stream of particles is present. It is assumed that all grains of dust have equal masses but charges are not constant in time-they may fluctuate in time. The du…
A non-intrusive method to measure particle interaction using only the thermal motion of the particles is applied to a vertically aligned dust particle pair in a complex plasma. The scanning mode spectra (SMS) are obtained by tracking the thermal motion of the grains, with the interaction strength then determined from the frequencies and the eigenvector configuration of the normal modes. The interaction of the bottom particle acting on the top particle is shown to be Yukawa-like with the screening length suppressed against the ion flow. The interaction of the top particle acting on the bottom p…
The role of quantum tunneling effect in the electron accretion current onto a negatively charged grain immersed in isotropic plasma is analyzed, within the quasiclassic approximation, for different plasma electron distribution functions, plasma parameters, and grain sizes. It is shown that this contribution can be small (negligible) for relatively large (micron-sized) dust grains in plasmas with electron temperatures of the order of a few eV, but becomes important for nano-sized dust grains (tens to hundreds nm in diameter) in cold and ultracold plasmas (electron temperatures ~ tens to hundred…
In this paper we consider the influence of dust charge fluctuations on damping of the dust-ion-acoustic waves. Fluid approximation of longitudinal electrostatic waves in unmagnetized plasmas is considered. We show that for a weak acoustic wave the attenuation depends on a phenomenological charging coefficient.
The current-driven electrostatic ion-cyclotron (EIC) instability is studied in presence of a transverse dc electric fields in a collisional magnetized dusty plasma. We derive the appropriate charging equation self consistently by using the Vlasov equation.
We recently questioned the treatment of a dust particle as a perfect absorber for electrons and ions and proposed a surface model for the charge of a dust particle in a quiescent plasma which combines the microscopic physics at the grain boundary (sticking into and desorption from external surface states) with the macrophysics of the discharge (plasma collection fluxes). Within this model the charge and partial screening of the particle can be calculated without relying on the condition that the total electron collection flux balances on the grain surface the total ion collection flux. Grain c…
To reveal the effect of secondary electron emission on the charging properties of a surface covered by micron-sized insulating dust particles and the migration characteristics of these particles, for the first time, we used a laser Doppler method to measure the diameters and velocities of micron-sized anorthite particles under electron beam irradiation with an incident energy of 350 eV. Here, anorthite particles are being treated as a proxy for lunar regolith. We experimentally confirm that the vertical transport of anorthite particles is always dominant, although the horizontal transport occu…
Dust particles immersed in a plasma environment become charged through the collection of electrons and ions at random times, causing the dust charge to fluctuate about an equilibrium value. Small grains (with radii less than 1 \mum) or grains in a tenuous plasma environment are sensitive to single additions of electrons or ions. Here we present a numerical model that allows examination of discrete stochastic charge fluctuations on the surface of aggregate grains and determines the effect of these fluctuations on the dynamics of grain aggregation. We show that the mean and standard deviation of…
Complex plasmas are interesting systems as the charged dust can self-assemble into different types of ordered structures. To understand the mechanisms which govern the transitions from one type of structure to another, it is necessary to know both the dust charge and the confining electric fields within the environment, parameters which are difficult to measure independently. The problem is further complicated by the ion wake field, which develops downstream of the dust grains in a flowing plasma. The differences in local ion density caused by the wake field change the equilibrium dust charge …
The interaction of a small object with surrounding plasma is an area of plasma-physics research with a multitude of applications. This paper introduces the plasma octree code pot, a microscopic simulator of a spheroidal dust grain in a plasma. pot uses the Barnes-Hut treecode algorithm to perform $N$-body simulations of electrons and ions in the vicinity of a chargeable spheroid, employing also the Boris particle-motion integrator and Hutchinson's reinjection algorithm from SCEPTIC; a description of the implementation of all three algorithms is provided. We present results from pot simulations…
A systematic numerical study of wake potential and ion density distribution of a single grain in streaming ions under the influence of the magnetic field applied along flow is presented. Strong magnetic field introduces ion focus depletion behind grain facilitating the entrance of electrons far away in the downstream towards the grain. It is shown that the magnetic field suppresses the amplitude of wake potential and modifies the ion density distribution substantially. The wake peak potential and position characteristics, and density distribution of plasma constituents in the presence of magne…
We study effects of the particle-wake interactions on the dispersion and polarization of dust lattice wave modes in two-dimensional plasma crystals. Most notably, the wake-induced coupling between the modes causes the branches to "attract" each other, and their polarizations become elliptical. Upon the mode hybridization the major axes of the ellipses (remaining mutually orthogonal) rotate by $45^\circ$. To demonstrate importance of the obtained results for experiments, we plot spectral densities of the longitudinal and transverse waves revealing distinct fingerprints of the mixed polarization…
Ion wake induced mode coupling is investigated experimentally for a horizontal dust chain formed in a complex plasma, verifying results from previous simulation. A double branch of faint spectral lines is detected in the mode spectra which verifies the predicted rule of mode coupling between the vertical z(j=i$\pm$1) modes and the longitudinal mode x(i). Discreet instabilities are observed as the branches of x- and z-modes intersect each other. The mode spectra in the vicinity of the instabilities exhibit enhanced energy density at specific coupled x and z modes, serving as direct evidence tha…
An interesting aspect of complex plasma is its ability to self-organize into a variety of structural configurations and undergo transitions between these states. A striking phenomenon is the isotropic-to-string transition observed in electrorheological complex plasma under the influence of a symmetric ion wakefield. Such transitions have been investigated using the Plasma Kristall-4 (PK-4) microgravity laboratory on the International Space Station (ISS). Recent experiments and numerical simulations have shown that, under PK-4 relevant discharge conditions, the seemingly homogeneous DC discharg…
This work examines the formation of wake fields caused by ions streaming around a charged dust particle, using three-dimensional particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations with charge-neutral collisions included. The influence of an external driving electric field, which leads to a non-Maxwellian distribution of ions, is investigated in detail. The wake features formed for non-Maxwellian ions exhibit significant deviations from those observed within the model of a shifted Maxwellian distribution. The dependence of the peak amplitude and position of the wake potential upon the degree of collisionality …
Micron-size charged particles can be easily levitated in low-density plasma environments. At low pressures, suspended particles have been observed to spontaneously oscillate around an equilibrium position. In systems of many particles, these oscillations can catalyze a variety of nonequilibrium, collective behaviors. Here, we report spontaneous oscillations of single particles that remain stable for minutes with striking regularity in amplitude and frequency. The oscillation amplitude can also exceed 1 cm, nearly an order of magnitude larger than previously observed. Using an integrated experi…
Vibrational modes and instabilities of a dust particle pair in a terrestrial laboratory complex plasma are investigated employing an analytical method whereby the plasma wakefield induced by an external electric field is modeled using an image charge method. It is found that for both horizontally and vertically aligned dust particle pairs in equilibrium, four normal modes exist. Variations of the confinement parameters cause a single type of instability in the horizontal pair and two types of instabilities in the vertical pair.
It is demonstrated that low frequency shear modes in a strongly coupled, inhomogeneous, dusty plasma can grow on account of an instability involving the dynamical charge fluctuations of the dust grains. The instability is driven by the gradient of the equilibrium dust charge density and is associated with the finite charging time of the dust grains. The present calculations, carried out in the generalized hydrodynamic viscoelastic formalism, also bring out important modifications in the threshold and growth rate of the instability due to collective effects associated with coupling to the compr…
We numerically investigate the dust charging in the sheath, by using the usual fluid approximation, it is extended to include self consistently the dust charge variation. The grain charge becomes a new self consistent dynamic variable, it is found that dust grains are first charged negatively at the sheath edge and then begin to be charged positively in the sheath. The numerical results show that the initial velocity of dust charged grains, sized grains and the density ratio of ion to electron at the sheath edge have affected the neutral point of dust charge. Moreover, the neutral point of dus…
The grains immersed in plasma get eroded by the ions falling onto them. As a consequence, they exhibit self-consistent mass fluctuations due to perturbations in the plasma charging currents. The grain mass is then a dynamical variable. The modifications in the plasma dielectric properties are investigated and new ultra-low frequency modes are shown to exist in the plasma.
Determining the equilibrium charge of conducting spheres in plasmas is important for interpreting Langmuir probe measurements, plasma surface interactions and dust particle behaviour. The Monte Carlo code Dust in Magnetised Plasmas (DiMPl) has been developed for the purpose of determining the forces and charging behaviour of conducting spheroids under a variety of conditions and benchmarked against previous numerical results. The floating potentials of spheres in isothermal, collisionless, hydrogen plasmas as a function of magnetic field strength and size relative to Debye length are studied u…
The charging of dust grains in astrophysical environments has been investigated with the assumption these grains are homogeneous spheres. However, there is evidence which suggests many grains in astrophysical environments are irregularly-shaped aggregates. Recent studies have shown that aggregates acquire higher charge-to-mass ratios due to their complex structures, which in turn may alter their subsequent dynamics and evolution. In this paper, the charging of aggregates is examined including secondary electron emission and photoemission in addition to primary plasma currents. The results show…
Nonlinear frequency response analysis is a widely used method for determining system dynamics in the presence of nonlinearities. In dusty plasmas, the plasma-grain interaction (e.g., grain charging fluctuations) can be characterized by a single particle nonlinear response analysis, while grain-grain nonlinear interactions can be determined by a multi-particle nonlinear response analysis. Here, a machine learning-based method to determine the equation of motion in the nonlinear response analysis for dust particles in plasmas is presented. Searching the parameter space in a Bayesian manner allow…
