Complex plasmas are interesting systems as the charged dust can self-assemble into different types of ordered structures. To understand the mechanisms which govern the transitions from one type of structure to another, it is necessary to know both the dust charge and the confining electric fields within the environment, parameters which are difficult to measure independently. The problem is further complicated by the ion wake field, which develops downstream of the dust grains in a flowing plasma. The differences in local ion density caused by the wake field change the equilibrium dust charge and shielding distance of the dust grains, and thus affect the interaction between grains. Here we use a molecular dynamics simulation of ion flow past dust grains to investigate the interaction between the dust particles and ions. We consider a long vertical chain of particles confined within a glass box placed on the lower electrode of a GEC rf reference cell. Ions stream from the bulk plasma at the top of the box to the negative lower electrode. We apply the model iteratively to self-consistently determine the dust charge, electric field, and ion density along the length of the chain as well as the ion flow speed. Simulation results indicate that the ion flow speed within the box is subsonic.
We argue that charged dust grains could significantly impact the confinement and transport of galactic cosmic rays. For sub-GeV to ~1000GeV cosmic rays, small-scale parallel Alfvén waves, which isotropize cosmic rays through gyro-resonant interactions, are also gyro-resonant with charged grains. If the dust is nearly stationary, as in the bulk of the interstellar medium, Alfvén waves are damped by dust. This will reduce the amplitude of Alfvén waves produced by the cosmic rays through the streaming instability, thus enhancing cosmic-ray transport. In well-ionized regions, the dust damping rate…
We investigate the possibility of cosmic ray (CR) confinement by charged dust grains through resonant drag instabilities (RDIs). We perform magnetohydrodynamic particle-in-cell simulations of magnetized gas mixed with charged dust and cosmic rays, with the gyro-radii of dust and GeV CRs on $\sim\mathrm{AU}$ scales fully resolved. As a first study, we focus on one type of RDI wherein charged grains drift super-Alfv{é}nically, with Lorentz forces strongly dominating over drag forces. Dust grains are unstable to the RDIs and form concentrated columns and sheets, whose scale grows until saturating…
The confinement provided by a glass box is proving ideal for the formation of vertically aligned structures and a convenient method for controlling the number of dust particles comprising these dust structures, as well as their size and shape. In this paper, the electronic confinement of the glass box is mapped and the particle interactions between the particle pairs inside the glass box are measured. The ion-wake field is shown to exist within the glass box and its vertical and horizontal extent is measured.
The spectral asymmetry of the wave energy distribution of dust particles during mode-coupling induced melting, observed for the first time in plasma crystals by Couëdel et al. [Phys. Rev. E 89, 053108 (2014)], is studied theoretically and by molecular-dynamics simulations. It is shown that an anisotropy of the well confining the microparticles selects the directions of preferred particle motion. The observed differences in intensity of waves of opposed directions is explained by a nonvanishing phonon flux. Anisotropic phonon scattering by defects and Umklapp scattering are proposed as possible…
A precise theoretical investigation has been made on dust-acoustic (DA) waves (DAWs) in a four components dusty plasma medium having inertial warm adiabatic dust grains and inertialess $q$-distributed electrons as well as isothermal ions and positrons. The nonlinear and dispersive parameters of the nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLSE), which develops by using reductive perturbations technique, have been used to recognize the stable and unstable parametric regions of the DAWs as well as associated DA rogue waves (DARWs) in the unstable parametric regime of the DAWs. The effects of the light po…
Nonlinear frequency response analysis is a widely used method for determining system dynamics in the presence of nonlinearities. In dusty plasmas, the plasma-grain interaction (e.g., grain charging fluctuations) can be characterized by a single particle nonlinear response analysis, while grain-grain nonlinear interactions can be determined by a multi-particle nonlinear response analysis. Here, a machine learning-based method to determine the equation of motion in the nonlinear response analysis for dust particles in plasmas is presented. Searching the parameter space in a Bayesian manner allow…
Determining the equilibrium charge of conducting spheres in plasmas is important for interpreting Langmuir probe measurements, plasma surface interactions and dust particle behaviour. The Monte Carlo code Dust in Magnetised Plasmas (DiMPl) has been developed for the purpose of determining the forces and charging behaviour of conducting spheroids under a variety of conditions and benchmarked against previous numerical results. The floating potentials of spheres in isothermal, collisionless, hydrogen plasmas as a function of magnetic field strength and size relative to Debye length are studied u…
The application of non-axisymmetric resonant magnetic perturbations (RMPs) to low current plasmas in the Mega Amp Spherical Tokamak (MAST) was found to be correlated with substantial drops in neutron production, suggesting a significant degradation of fast ion confinement. The effects of such perturbations on fast ions in MAST have been modelled using a revised version of a non-steady-state orbit-following Monte-Carlo code (NSS OFMC), in which the parametrization of fusion reaction rates has been updated and neutron rates have been recalculated. Losses of fast ions via charge-exchange (CX) wit…
The role of hot electrons in charging of dust grains is investigated in a two-temperature hydrogen plasma. A variety of dust particles are introduced into the system and secondary electron emission (SEE) from each of the dust grains has been reported. A cylindrical Langmuir probe is used for determining the plasma parameters and a Faraday cup is connected to an electrometer in order to measure the dust current. The electrometer readings confirm the electron emission from the dust and SEE is observed from the tungsten dust in a low-pressure experimental plasma device for the first time.
A two-dimensional complex plasma containing active Janus particles was studied experimentally. A single layer of micron-size plastic microspheres was suspended in the plasma sheath of a radio-frequency discharge in argon at low pressure. The particle sample used was a mixture of regular particles and Janus particles, which were coated on one side with a thin layer of platinum. Unlike a suspension consisting of regular particles only, the suspension with inclusion of Janus particles did not form an ordered lattice in the experimental conditions used. Instead, the particles moved around with hig…
The formation of self-consistent crystalline structure is a well-known phenomenon in complex plasmas. In most experiments the pressure and rf power are the main controlling parameters in determining the phase of the system. We have studied the effect of externally applied magnetic field on the configuration of plasma crystals, suspended in the sheath of a radio-frequency discharge using the Magnetized Dusty Plasma Experiment (MDPX) device. Experiments are performed at a fixed pressure and rf power where a crystalline structure is formed within a confining ring. The magnetic field is then incre…
A non-intrusive method to measure particle interaction using only the thermal motion of the particles is applied to a vertically aligned dust particle pair in a complex plasma. The scanning mode spectra (SMS) are obtained by tracking the thermal motion of the grains, with the interaction strength then determined from the frequencies and the eigenvector configuration of the normal modes. The interaction of the bottom particle acting on the top particle is shown to be Yukawa-like with the screening length suppressed against the ion flow. The interaction of the top particle acting on the bottom p…
Structural changes of self-organized vortices in Jupiter atmospheres such as Great Red Spot (GRS) and White Ovals are demonstrated using an electrostatically bounded charged dust cloud in an unbounded streaming plasma as the prototype for various driven-dissipative complex flow systems in nature. Using a 2D hydrodynamic model, the steady state flow solutions are obtained for the volumetrically driven dust cloud in a bounded domain of aspect-ratio of 1.5 relevant to the current size of GRS and a driving sheared ion flow similar to the part of zonal jets streaming through the GRS. These nonlinea…
