We prove that if $G$ is a finite flat group scheme of $p$ power rank over a perfect field of characteristic $p$, then the second crystalline cohomology of its classifying stack $H^2_{crys}(BG)$ recovers the Dieudonné module of $G$. We also provide a calculation of crystalline cohomology of classifying stack of abelian varieties. We use this to prove that crystalline cohomology of the classifying stack of a $p$-divisible group is a symmetric algebra (in degree $2$) on its Dieudonné module. We also prove mixed characteristic analogues of some of these results using prismatic cohomology.
We compute the motive of the classifying stack of an orthogonal group in the Grothendieck ring of stacks over a field of characteristic different from two.
We compute the class of the classifying stack of the special orthogonal group in the Grothendieck ring of stacks, and check that it is equal to the multiplicative inverse of the class of the group.
Combining work of Peyre, Colliot-Thélène and Voisin, we give the first example of a finite group $G$ such that the motivic class of its classifying stack $BG$ in Ekedahl's Grothendieck ring of stacks over $\mathbb{C}$ is non-trivial and $BG$ has trivial unramified Brauer group.
In this paper we consider the $\mathrm{Br} = \mathrm{Br}'$ question for classifying stacks by various group schemes. These are algebraic stacks that do not necessarily admit a finite flat cover by a scheme for which $\mathrm{Br} = \mathrm{Br}'$ holds, hence are not amenable to the usual argument of pushing forward a twisted vector bundle. We provide two classes of examples satisfying $\mathrm{Br} \ne \mathrm{Br}'$ that do not "arise from" the scheme case.
Let $G$ be a finite group, and let $\{B_{\mathbb{C}}G\}$ the class of its classifying stack $B_{\mathbb{C}}G$ in Ekedahl's Grothendieck ring of algebraic $\mathbb{C}$-stacks $K_0(\operatorname{Stacks}_{\mathbb{C}})$. We show that if $B_{\mathbb{C}}G$ has the mixed Tate property, the invariants $H^i(\{B_{\mathbb{C}}G\})$ defined by T. Ekedahl are zero for all $i\neq 0$. We also extend Ekedahl's construction of these invariants to fields of positive characteristic.
We prove that the class of the classifying stack $B PGL_n$ is the multiplicative inverse of the class of the projective linear group $PGL_n$ in the Grothendieck ring of stacks for $n = 2$ and $n = 3$ under mild conditions on the base field $k$. In particular, although it is known that the multiplicativity relation $\{T\} = \{S\}\cdot\{PGL_n\}$ does not hold for all $PGL_n$-torsors $T \to S$, it holds for the universal $PGL_n$-torsors for said $n$.
We compute the number of rational points of classifying stacks of Chevalley group schemes using the Lefschetz-Grothendieck trace formula of Behrend for $\ell$-adic cohomology of algebraic stacks. From this we also derive associated zeta functions for these classifying stacks.
In this article, we classify the irreducible components of moduli stacks of torsion free sheaves of rank 2 on K3 surfaces of Picard number 1. For ruled surfaces, the components of moduli stacks of torsion free sheaves were classified by C.Walter. Moreover, by virtue of our result, we classify the irreducible components of Brill-Noether loci of Hilbert schemes of points on K3 surfaces.
We establish several new properties of the $p$-adic Jacquet-Langlands functor defined by Scholze in terms of the cohomology of the Lubin-Tate tower. In particular, we reprove Scholze's basic finiteness theorems, prove a duality theorem, and show a kind of partial Künneth formula. Using these results, we deduce bounds on Gelfand-Kirillov dimension, together with some new vanishing and nonvanishing results. Our key new tool is the six functor formalism with solid almost $\mathcal{O}^+/p$-coefficients developed recently by the second author [Man22]. One major point of this paper is to extend the …
We compute the class of the classifying stack of the exceptional algebraic group $G_2$ and of the spin groups $\mathrm{Spin}_7$ and $\mathrm{Spin}_8$ in the Grothendieck ring of stacks, and show that they are equal to the inverse of the class of the corresponding group. Furthermore, we show that the computation of the motivic classes of the stacks $\mathscr{B}\mathrm{Spin}_n$ can be reduced to the computation of the classes of $\mathscr{B} Δ_n$, where $Δ_n\subset \mathrm{Pin}_n$ is the "extraspecial $2$-group", the preimage of the diagonal matrices under the projection $\mathrm{Pin}_n\to \math…
We compute the Hodge and de Rham cohomology of the classifying space BG (defined as etale cohomology on the algebraic stack BG) for reductive groups G over many fields, including fields of small characteristic. These calculations have a direct relation with representation theory, yielding new results there. The calculations are closely analogous to, but not always the same as, the cohomology of classifying spaces in topology.
We compute generators for the Chow ring of the classifying space of PGL_3 (over the complex numbers) as defined by Totaro. We also find enough relations after inverting 3. We show that this ring is not generated by Chern classes (this is the first example of this kind among classical groups) and prove that Totaro's refined cycle class map to a quotient of complex cobordism of BPGL_3 is surjective
Arithmetic duality theorems over a local field $k$ are delicate to prove if $\mathrm{char} k > 0$. In this case, the proofs often exploit topologies carried by the cohomology groups $H^n(k, G)$ for commutative finite type $k$-group schemes $G$. These "Čech topologies", defined using Čech cohomology, are impractical due to the lack of proofs of their basic properties, such as continuity of connecting maps in long exact sequences. We propose another way to topologize $H^n(k, G)$: in the key case $n = 1$, identify $H^1(k, G)$ with the set of isomorphism classes of objects of the groupoid of $k$-p…
We investigate the structure of the Chow ring of the classifying stacks $BT$ of algebraic tori, as it has been defined by B. Totaro. Some previous work of N. Karpenko, A. Merkurjev, S. Blinstein and F. Scavia has shed some light on the structure of such rings. In particular Karpenko showed the absence of torsion classes in the case of permutation tori, while Merkurjev and Blinstein described in a very effective way the second Chow group $A^2(BT)$ in the general case. Building on this work, Scavia exhibited an example where $A^2(BT)_\text{tors}\neq 0$. Here, by making use of a very elementary a…
Let k be a field, let G be a finite group and let T be a split k-torus on which G acts multiplicatively, and for every m greater than 1 denote by T[m] the m-torsion subgroup of T. Under a suitable assumption on m, we show that the motivic class of the classifying stack of the semi-direct product of T[m] and G in K_0(Stacks_k) is trivial. As a consequence, we prove that the motivic class of BW is trivial for a large class of complex reflection groups W.
We prove that the mapping stack Map(Y,X) of topological stacks X and Y is again a topological stack if Y admits a compact groupoid presentation. If Y admits a locally compact groupoid presentation, we show that Map(Y,X) is a paratopological stack. In particular, it has a classifying space (hence, a natural weak homotopy type). We prove an invariance theorem which shows that the weak homotopy type of the mapping stack Map(Y,X) does not change if we replace X by its classifying space, provided that Y is paracompact topological space. As an example, we describe the loop stack of the classifying s…
Linear categories naturally have several identification relations : isomorphisms, categorical equivalences and Morita equivalences. In this thesis, we construct the classifying stacks for these three relations ($\ukcatiso$, $\ukcateq$, $\ukcatmor$) together with the classifying stack of abelian categories ($\ukab$), the originality of the subject being that, apart from the first one, these are higher stacks. The principal result is that, under some finiteness assumptions, these stacks are geometric in the sense of C. Simpson. In particular, one recover the Hochschild cohomology of a category $…
Let $G$ be a smooth connected reductive group over a field $k$ and $Γ$ be a central subgroup of $G$. We construct Eilenberg-Moore-type spectral sequences converging to the Hodge and de Rham cohomology of $B(G/Γ)$. As an application, building upon work of Toda and using Totaro's inequality, we show that for all $m\geq 0$ the Hodge and de Rham cohomology algebras of the classifying stacks $B\mathrm{PGL}_{4m+2}$ and $B\mathrm{PSO}_{4m+2}$ over $\mathbb{F}_2$ are isomorphic to the singular $\mathbb{F}_2$-cohomology of the classifying space of the corresponding Lie group. From this we obtain a full…
For a complex Lie group G and a prime number p, Totaro had conjectured that the dimension of the singular cohomology with Z/p-coefficients of classifying space of G is bounded above by that of the de Rham cohomology of the classifying stack of (the split form of) G in characteristic p. This conjecture was recently proven by Kubrak--Prikhodko. In this note, we give a shorter proof.
We define the notion of {\em classifying space} of a topological stack and show that every topological stack \X has a classifying space X which is a topological space well-defined up to weak homotopy equivalence. Under a certain paracompactness condition on \X, we show that X is actually well-defined up to homotopy equivalence. These results are formulated in terms of functors from the category of topological stacks to the (weak) homotopy category of topological spaces. We prove similar results for (small) diagrams of topological stacks.
In this note we give a definition of stable maps into the classifying stack $\BGL_r$ of the general linear group. To support our belief that the definition is the correct one, we show that there are natural boundary morphisms between the moduli groupoids parameterizing stable maps to $\BGL_r$.
For the split group $G_{2}$ defined over $\mathbb{Z},$ we show that the de Rham cohomology ring of $B(G_{2})_{\mathbb{F}_{2}}$ is isomorphic to the singular cohomology ring with $\mathbb{F}_{2}$-coefficients of $B(G_{2})_{\mathbb{C}}.$ For the spin groups $\textrm{Spin}(n)$ defined over $\mathbb{Z},$ we show that the de Rham cohomology ring of $B\textrm{Spin}(n)_{\mathbb{F}_{2}}$ is isomorphic to the singular cohomology ring with $\mathbb{F}_{2}$-coefficients of $B\textrm{Spin}(n)_{\mathbb{C}}$ for $n \leq 10.$ For $n=11,$ we make a full computation of the de Rham cohomology ring of $B\textrm{…
We introduce stacks classifying étale germs of pointed n-dimensional varieties. We show that quasi-coherent sheaves on these stacks are universal D- and O-modules. We state and prove a relative version of Artin's approximation theorem, and as a consequence identify our stacks with classifying stacks of automorphism groups of the n-dimensional formal disc. We introduce the notion of convergent universal modules, and study them in terms of these stacks and the representation theory of the automorphism groups.
Building up on work of Epstein, May and Drury, we define and investigate the mod $p$ Steenrod operations on the de Rham cohomology of smooth algebraic stacks over a field of characteristic $p>0$. We then compute the action of the operations on the de Rham cohomology of classifying stacks for finite groups, connected reductive groups for which $p$ is not a torsion prime, and (special) orthogonal groups when $p=2$.
We work through, in detail, the orbifold quantum cohomology, with gravitational descendants, of the stack BG, the point modulo trivial action of a finite group G. We provide a simple description of algebraic structures on the state space of this theory. As a consequence, we find that multiple copies of commuting Virasoro algebras appear in this theory which completely determine the correlators of the theory.
In this paper we study the Bruhat decomposition of not necessarily connected reductive quasi-split groups $G$ with respect to not necessarily connected parabolic subgroups. If $G$ is defined over a finite field, we construct a smooth morphism from the stack classifying $F$-zips with $G$-structure to the stack classifying the generalized Bruhat cells and study the relation between the resulting stratifications. We apply these general results to the twisted orthogonal $F$-zip given by the second De Rham cohomology of a relative surface, focussing on K3-surfaces.
Let GO(2n) be the general orthogonal group (the group of similitudes) over any algebraically closed field of characteristic not equal to 2. We determine the etale cohomology ring with mod 2 coefficients of the algebraic stack BGO(2n). In the topological category, Y. Holla and N. Nitsure determined the singular cohomology ring of the classifying space BGO(2n) of the complex Lie group GO(2n) in terms of explicit generators and relations. We extend their results to the algebraic category. The chief ingredients in this are (i) an extension to etale cohomology of an idea of Totaro, originally used …
We study the class of the classifying stack of a finite group in a Grothendieck group of algebraic stacks introduced previously. We show that this class is trivial in a number of examples most notably for all symmetric groups. We also give some examples where it is not trivial. The latter uses counterexamples of Saltman and Swan to the problem of Noether.
An important piece of information in the theory of the arithmetic Galois action on the geometric fundamental groups of schemes is that divisorial inertia is acted on cyclotomically. We detail in this note the content of this fact in the case of the profinite braid groups arising from complex reflection groups, naturally viewing them as the geometric fundamental groups of the attending classifying spaces. We also include the case of the full (non colored) braid groups, whose completed classifying spaces are Deligne-Mumford stacks rather than schemes.
Automorphisms of a perfect complex naturally have the structure of an $\infty$-group: the 1-morphisms are quasi-isomorphisms, the 2-morphisms are homotopies, etc. This article starts by proving some basic properties of this $\infty$-group. We go on to study the deformation theory of this stack of $\infty$-groups and give a criterion for this stack to be formally smooth. The classifying stack of this $\infty$-group classifies forms of a complex. We discuss a version of Hilbert 90 for perfect complexes.
We give the first examples of finite groups G such that the Chow ring of the classifying space BG depends on the base field, even for fields containing the algebraic closure of Q. As a tool, we give several characterizations of the varieties which satisfy Kunneth properties for Chow groups or motivic homology. We define the (compactly supported) motive of a quotient stack in Voevodsky's derived category of motives. This makes it possible to ask when the motive of BG is mixed Tate, which is equivalent to the motivic Kunneth property. We prove that BG is mixed Tate for various "well-behaved" fin…
Let $F$ be a field of characteristic zero admitting a biquadratic field extension. We give an example of a torus $G$ over $F$ whose classifying stack $BG$ is stably rational and such that $\{BG\}\{G\}\neq 1$ in the Grothendieck ring of algebraic stacks over $F$. We also give an example of a finite étale group scheme $A$ over $F$ such that $BA$ is stably rational and $\{BA\}\neq 1$.
Let $GO(2n)$ be the general orthogonal group scheme (the group of orthogonal similitudes). In the topological category, Y. Holla and N. Nitsure determined the singular cohomology ring $H^*_{\rm sing}(BGO(2n,\mathbb C),\mathbb F_2)$ of the classifying space $BGO(2n,\mathbb C)$ of the corresponding complex Lie group $GO(2n,\mathbb C)$ in terms of explicit generators and relations. The author of the present note showed that over any algebraically closed field of characteristic not equal to $2$, the smooth-étale cohomology ring $H_{\rm sm-ét}^*(BGO(2n),\mathbb F_2)$ of the classifying algebraic st…
For $k$ a perfect field of characteristic $p>0$ and $G/k$ a split reductive group with $p$ a non-torsion prime for $G,$ we compute the mod $p$ motivic cohomology of the geometric classifying space $BG_{(r)}$, where $G_{(r)}$ is the $r$th Frobenius kernel of $G.$ Our main tool is a motivic version of the Eilenberg-Moore spectral sequence, due to Krishna. For a flat affine group scheme $G/k$ of finite type, we define a cycle class map from the mod $p$ motivic cohomology of the classifying space $BG$ to the mod $p$ étale motivic cohomology of the classifying stack $\mathcal{B}G.$ This also gives …
We give a construction of the moduli space of stable maps to the classifying stack Bμ_r of a cyclic group by a sequence of r-th root constructions on M_{0, n}. We prove a closed formula for the total Chern class of μ_r-eigenspaces of the Hodge bundle, and thus of the obstruction bundle of the genus zero Gromov-Witten theory of stacks of the form [C^N/μ_r]. We deduce linear recursions for all genus-zero Gromov-Witten invariants.
In the integral cohomology ring of the classifying space of the projective linear group $PGL_n$ (over $\mathbb{C}$), we find a collection of $p$-torsions $y_{p,k}$ of degree $2(p^{k+1}+1)$ for any odd prime divisor $p$ of $n$, and $k\geq 0$. If in addition, $p^2\nmid n$, there are $p$-torsion classes $ρ_{p,k}$ of degree $p^{k+1}+1$ in the Chow ring of the classifying stack of $PGL_n$, such that the cycle class map takes $ρ_{p,k}$ to $y_{p,k}$. We present an application of the above classes regarding Chern subrings.
For a linear algebraic group $G$ over a field $k$, we define an equivariant version of the Voevodsky's motivic cobordism $MGL$. We show that this is an oriented cohomology theory with localization sequence on the category of smooth $G$-schemes and there is a natural transformation from this functor to the functor of equivariant motivic cohomology. We give several applications. In particular, we use this equivariant motivic cobordism to study the cobordism ring of the classifying spaces and the cycle class maps from the algebraic to the singular cohomology of such spaces. This theory of motivic…
I prove Ravenel's 1983 "Global Conjecture" on $\Ext^1$ over the classifying Hopf algebroid of formal $A$-modules, equivalently, the first flat cohomology group $H^1_{fl}$ of the moduli stack $\mathcal{M}_{fmA}$ of formal $A$-modules. I then show that the Hecke $L$-functions of certain Großencharakters of Galois extensions $K/\mathbb{Q}$ can be computed from $H^1_{fl} (\mathcal{M}_{fmA})$, and vice versa; as a consequence I show that, for a large class of Galois extensions of $\mathbb{Q}$, two extensions $K,L$ are arithmetically equivalent (i.e., they have the same Dedekind zeta-function) if an…
For a complex algebraic variety $X$, we show that triviality of the sheaf cohomology group $H^0(X,\mathcal{H}^3)$ occurring on the second page of the Bloch-Ogus spectral sequence follows from a condition on the integral Chow group $CH^2X$ and the integral cohomology group $H^3(X, Z)$. In the case that $X$ is an appropriate approximation to the classifying stack $BG$ of a finite $p$-group $G$, this result states that the group $G$ has no degree three cohomological invariants. As a corollary we show that the nonabelian groups of order $p^3$ for odd prime $p$ have no degree three cohomological in…
We generalize the van Est map and isomorphism theorem in three ways, and we discuss conjectured connections with homotopy theory, including a proposal of a category which unifies differentiable stacks, Lie algebroids and homotopy theory. In Part 2 of this thesis we generalize the van Est map from a comparison map between Lie groupoid cohomology and Lie algebroid cohomology to a (more conceptual) comparison map between the cohomology of a stack $\mathcal{G}$ and the cohomology of a simple foliation $\mathcal{H}\to\mathcal{G}$. In Part 1 we generalize the functions that we can take cohomology of…
We study the moduli spaces which classify smooth surfaces along with a complex line bundle. There are homological stability and Madsen--Weiss type results for these spaces (mostly due to Cohen and Madsen), and we discuss the cohomological calculations which may be deduced from them. We then relate these spaces to (a generalisation of) Kawazumi's extended mapping class groups, and hence deduce cohomological information about these. Finally, we relate these results to complex algebraic geometry. We construct a holomorphic stack classifying families of Riemann surfaces equipped with a fibrewise h…
