The non-perturbative path integral quantization of the electroweak model is confronted with an apparent instability when integrating over the Maxwell potential $A_μ$ due to the fast growth of the box graphs $AAAA$ and $AAAZ$ for large amplitude variations of $A_μ$. $Z_μ$ is from the vector part of the weak neutral current. These graphs are unavoidable because they are conditionally convergent and have to be isolated in the model's exact Euclidean one-loop effective action arising from its fermion determinants. A previous QED calculation of the large amplitude variation of its fermion determinant for a class of random potentials showed that the $AAAA$ box graph cancels in this limit. Using this result it is shown that within the electroweak model large amplitude variations of $A_μ$ for fixed $Z_μ$ in a superposition of these fields cancel the $AAAA$ and $AAAZ$ graphs, thereby removing an apparent obstacle to the model's non-perturbative quantization. A negative paramagnetic term in the remainder opposes the effective action's growth for such variations. Its calculation requires knowledge of the degeneracy of the bound states of a charged fermion in the four-dimensional magnetic fields generated by the functional measure of $A_μ$.
I study the scalar representations of the electroweak group of the Standard Model, with a special emphasis on their chiral properties and on their behaviour by the discrete symmetries P and CP. A gauge theory for J=0 mesons naturally springs out, together with a new approach to the question of the electroweak violation of CP. When acting in the 4-dimensional space of states spanned by the special representations under scrutiny in this paper, the electric charge appears as one of the three generators of the diagonal SU(2) and its eigenvalues are consequently quantized.
We perform the antifield BRST quantization of duality-symmetric Maxwell theory and show explicitly the quantum equivalence of the different formulations (covariant and non-covariant). The non-covariant gauge-fixed action is used in the computation of propagators for this model.
We consider the Dirac equation and Maxwell's electrodynamics in $\mathbb{R} \times S^3$ spacetime, where a three-dimensional sphere is the Hopf bundle $S^3 \rightarrow S^2$. In both cases, discrete spectra of classical solutions are obtained. Based on the solutions obtained, the quantization of free, noninteracting Dirac and Maxwell fields is carried out. The method of nonperturbative quantization of interacting Dirac and Maxwell fields is suggested. The corresponding operator equations and the infinite set of the Schwinger-Dyson equations for Green's functions is written down. To illustrate t…
We consider an extension of the Standard Model that was proposed recently by one of the current authors (PQH), which admits magnetic monopoles with a mass of order of a few TeV. We impose, in addition to topological quantization in the SU(2) sector of the model, the Dirac Quantization Condition (DQC) required for consistency of the quantum theory of a charged electron in the presence of the monopole. This leads to the prediction ${\rm sin}^2θ_W = 1/4$, where $θ_W$ is the weak mixing angle at the energy scale set by the monopole mass. A leading-order renormalization-group analysis yields the va…
Dirac's quantization of the Maxwell theory on non-commutative spaces has been considered. First class constraints were found which are the same as in classical electrodynamics. The gauge covariant quantization of the non-linear equations of electromagnetic fields on non-commutative spaces were studied. We have found the extended Hamiltonian which leads to equations of motion in the most general gauge covariant form. As a special case, the gauge fixing approach on the basis of Dirac's brackets has been investigated. The problem of the construction of the wave function and physical observables h…
We quantize a generalized electromagnetism in 2 + 1 dimensions which contains a higher-order derivative term by using Dirac's method. By introducing auxiliary fields we transform the original theory in a lower-order derivative one which can be treated in a usual way.
The quantization of the SU(2)$\times $U(1) gauge-symmetric electroweak theory is performed in the Hamiltonian path-integral formalism. In this quantization, we start from the Lagrangian given in the unitary gauge in which the unphysical Goldstone fields are absent, but the unphysical longitudinal components of the gauge fields still exist. In order to eliminate the longitudinal components, it is necessary to introduce the Lorentz gauge conditions as constraints. These constraints may be incorporated into the Lagrangian by the Lagrange undetermined multiplier method. In this way, it is found th…
The canonical and symmetrical energy-momentum tensors and their non-zero traces in Maxwell's theory on non-commutative spaces have been found. Dirac's quantization of the theory under consideration has been performed. I have found the extended Hamiltonian and equations of motion in the general gauge covariant form.
We quantize non-commutative Maxwell theory canonically in the background field gauge for weak and slowly varying background fields. We determine the complete basis for expansion under such an approximation. As an application, we derive the Wigner function which determines the leading order high temperature behavior of the perturbative amplitudes of non-commutative Maxwell theory. To leading order, we also give a closed form expression for the distribution function for the non-commutative $U (1)$ gauge theory at high temperature.
We consider the loop quantization of Maxwell theory. A quantization of this type leads to a quantum theory in which the fundamental excitations are loop-like rather than particle-like. Each such loop plays the role of a quantized Faraday's line of electric flux. We find that the quantization depends on an arbitrary choice of a parameter e that carries the dimension of electric charge. For each value of e an electric charge that can be contained inside a bounded spatial region is automatically quantized in units of hbar/4*pi*e. The requirement of consistency with the quantization of electric ch…
We present an SO(2,4)-covariant quantization of the free electromagnetic field in conformally flat spaces (CFS). A CFS is realized in a six-dimensional space as an intersection of the null cone with a given surface. The smooth move of the latter is equivalent to perform a Weyl rescaling. This allows to transport the SO(2,4)-invariant quantum structure of the Maxwell field from Minkowski space to any CFS. Calculations are simplified and the CFS Wightman two-point functions are given in terms of their Minkowskian counterparts. The difficulty due to gauge freedom is surpassed by introducing two a…
Consider the Euclidean functional integral representation of any physical process in the electroweak model. Integrating out the fermion degrees of freedom introduces twenty-four fermion determinants. These multiply the Gaussian functional measures of the Maxwell, $Z$, $W$ and Higgs fields to give an effective functional measure. Suppose the functional integral over the Maxwell field is attempted first. This paper is concerned with the large amplitude behavior of the Maxwell effective measure. It is assumed that the large amplitude variation of this measure is insensitive to the presence of the…
We show that the strongly coupled field theory holographically dual to the Gubser-Rocha anti-de-Sitter Einstein-Maxwell-Dilaton theory describes not a single non-trivial AdS$_2$ IR fixed point, but a one-parameter family. It is dual to a local quantum critical phase instead of a quantum critical point. This result follows from a detailed analysis of the possible quantizations of the gravitational theory that is consistent with the thermodynamics of the analytical Gubser-Rocha black hole solution. The analytic Gubser-Rocha black hole is only a 2-parameter subset of all possible solutions, and w…
We develop a quantization scheme for Maxwell's equations without source on an arbitrary four dimensional globally hyperbolic spacetime. The field strength tensor is the key dynamical object and it is not assumed a priori that it descends from a vector potential. It is shown that, in general, the associated field algebra can contain a non trivial centre and, on account of this, such a theory cannot be described within the framework of general local covariance unless further restrictive assumptions on the topology of the spacetime are made.
Knotted solutions to electromagnetism are investigated as an independent subsector of the theory. We write down a Lagrangian and a Hamiltonian formulation of Bateman's construction for the knotted electromagnetic solutions. We introduce a general definition of the null condition and generalize the construction of Maxwell's theory to massless free complex scalar, its dual two form field, and to a massless DBI scalar. We set up the framework for quantizing the theory both in a path integral approach, as well as the canonical Dirac method for a constrained system. We make several observations abo…
Quantization of the free Maxwell field in Minkowski space is carried out using a loop representation and shown to be equivalent to the standard Fock quantization. Because it is based on coherent state methods, this framework may be useful in quantum optics. It is also well-suited for the discussion of issues related to flux quantization in condensed matter physics. Our own motivation, however, came from a non-perturbative approach to quantum gravity. The concrete results obtained in this paper for the Maxwell field provide independent support for that approach. In addition, they offer some ins…
The Maxwell-Chern-Simons theory is canonically quantized in the Coulomb gauge by using the Dirac bracket quantization procedure. The determination of the Coulomb gauge polarization vector turns out to be intrincate. A set of quantum Poincaré densities obeying the Dirac-Schwinger algebra, and, therefore, free of anomalies, is constructed. The peculiar analytical structure of the polarization vector is shown to be at the root for the existence of spin of the massive gauge quanta. The Coulomb gauge Feynman rules are used to compute the Möller scattering amplitude in the lowest order of perturbatio…
In this paper we consider introducing careful regularization in the quantization of Maxwell theory in the asymptotic null infinity. This allows systematic discussions of the commutators in various boundary conditions, and application of Dirac brackets accordingly in a controlled manner. This method is most useful when we consider asymptotic charges that are not localized at the boundary $u\to \pm \infty$ like large gauge transformations. We show that our method reproduces the operator algebra in known cases, and it can be applied to other space-time symmetry charges such as the BMS transformat…
A simplified formalism of first quantized massless fields of any spin is presented. The angular momentum basis for particles of zero mass and finite spin s of the D^(s-1/2,1/2) representation of the Lorentz group is used to describe the wavefunctions. The advantage of the formalism is that by equating to zero the s-1 components of the wave functions, the 2s-1 subsidiary conditions (needed to eliminate the non-forward and non-backward helicities) are automatically satisfied. Probability currents and Lagrangians are derived allowing a first quantized formalism. A simple procedure is derived for …
The quantum Maxwell theory at finite temperature at equilibrium is studied on compact and closed manifolds in both the functional integral- and Hamiltonian formalism. The aim is to shed some light onto the interrelation between the topology of the spatial background and the thermodynamic properties of the system. The quantization is not unique and gives rise to inequivalent quantum theories which are classified by θ-vacua. Based on explicit parametrizations of the gauge orbit space in the functional integral approach and of the physical phase space in the canonical quantization scheme, the Gri…
The equivalence between a higher derivative extension of Maxwell-Chern-Simons Proca model and some gauge invariant theories from the point of view of the Hamiltonian path integral quantization in the framework of gauge-unfixing approach is investigated. The Hamiltonian path integrals of the first-class systems take manifestly Lorentz-covariant forms.
We investigate the fermions of the standard model without a Higgs scalar. Instead, we consider a non-local four-quark interaction in the tensor channel which is characterized by a single dimensionless coupling $f$. Quantization leads to a consistent perturbative expansion for small $f$. The running of $f$ is asymptotically free and therefore induces a non-perturbative scale $Λ_{ch}$, in analogy to the strong interactions. We argue that spontaneous electroweak symmetry breaking is triggered at a scale where $f$ grows large and find the top quark mass of the order of $Λ_{ch}$. We also present a …
We present a detailed discussion of the entanglement structure of vector fields through canonical quantization. We quantize Maxwell theory in Rindler space in Lorenz gauge, discuss the Hilbert space structure and analyze the Unruh effect. As a warm-up, in 1+1 dimensions, we compute the spectrum and prove that the theory is thermodynamically trivial. In d+1 dimensions, we identify the edge sector as eigenstates of horizon electric flux or equivalently as states representing large gauge transformations, localized on the horizon. The edge Hilbert space is generated by inserting a generic combinat…
Extended $U_e(1)\times U_g(1)$ electromagnetism containing both a photon and a pseudo-photon is introduced at variational level and is justified by the violation of the Bianchi identities in conceptual systems, either in the presence of magnetic monopoles or non-regular external fields, not being accounted by the standard Maxwell Lagrangian. It is carried a dimensional reduction that renders a $U_e(1)\times U_g(1)$ Maxwell-BF type theory and it is considered canonical functional quantization in planar systems which may be relevant in Hall systems.
We represent a classical Maxwell-Bloch equation and related to it positive part of the AKNS hierarchy in geometrical terms. The Maxwell-Bloch evolution is given by an infinitesimal action of a nilpotent subalgebra $n_+$ of affine Lie algebra $\hat {sl}_2$ on a Maxwell-Bloch phase space treated as a homogeneous space of $n_+$. A space of local integrals of motion is described using cohomology methods. We show that hamiltonian flows associated to the Maxwell-Bloch local integrals of motion (i.e. positive AKNS flows) are identified with an infinitesimal action of an abelian subalgebra of the nilp…

We analyze the Markovian and non-Markovian stochastic quantization methods for a complex action quantum mechanical model analog to a Maxwell-Chern-Simons eletrodynamics in Weyl gauge. We show through analytical methods convergence to the correct equilibrium state for both methods. Introduction of a memory kernel generates a non-Markovian process which has the effect of slowing down oscillations that arise in the Langevin-time evolution toward equilibrium of complex action problems. This feature of non-Markovian stochastic quantization might be beneficial in large scale numerical simulations of…
The quantization of the current in a superconducting quantum point contact is reviewed and the critical current is discussed at different temperatures depending on the carrier concentration as well by suggesting a constant potential in the semiconductor and then a Maxwell potential. When the Fermi wave length is comparable with the constriction width we showed that the critical current has a step-like variation as a function of the constriction width and the carrier concentration.
The anomaly cancellation is at the basis of the perturbative consistence of the Standard Model and it provides a partial explanation of charge quantization. We consider an effective Electroweak theory on a lattice, with a quartic interaction describing the weak forces and an interaction with the e.m. field. We prove the validity of the anomaly cancellation at a non perturbative level and with a finite lattice cut-off, even if the lattice breaks some important symmetries, on which perturbative arguments for the cancellation are based. The method of the proof has analogies with the one adopted f…
This paper is dedicated to formulate the interaction picture dynamics of the self-dual field minimally coupled to fermions. To make this possible, we start by quantizing the free self-dual model by means of the Dirac bracket quantization procedure. We obtain, as result, that the free self-dual model is a relativistically invariant quantum field theory whose excitations are identical to the physical (gauge invariant) excitations of the free Maxwell-Chern-Simons theory. The model describing the interaction of the self-dual field minimally coupled to fermions is also quantized through the Dirac b…
In order to understand the parameters of the standard model of electroweak and strong interactions, one needs to embed the standard model into some larger theory that accounts for the observed values. This means some additional sector is needed that fixes and stabilizes the values of the fundamental constants of nature. We describe how such a sector can be constructed using the so-called chaotic quantization method applied to a system of coupled map lattices. We restrict ourselves in this short note on verifying how our model correctly yields the numerical values of Yukawa and gravitational co…
Modifications of the electromagnetic Maxwell Lagrangian in four dimensions have been considered by some authors. One may include an explicit massive term (Proca) and a topological but not Lorentz-invariant term within certain observational limits. We find the dual-corresponding gauge invariant version of this theory by using the recently suggested gauge embedding method. We enforce this dualisation procedure by showing that, in many cases, this is actually a constructive method to find a sort of parent action, which manifestly establishes duality. We also use the gauge invariant version of thi…
The cvariant path integral quantization of the theory of the scalar and spinor particles interacting through the abelian and non-Abelian Chern-Simons gauge fields is carried out and is shown to be mathematically ill defined due to the absence of the transverse components of these gauge fields. This is remedied by the introduction of the Maxwell or the Maxwell-type (in the non-Abelian case)term which makes the theory superrenormalizable and guarantees its gauge-invariant regularization and renormalization. The generating functionals are constructed and shown to be formally the same as those of …
I review the covariant quantization of the closed fermionic string with (2,2) extended world-sheet supersymmetry on R^{2,2}. Results on n-point scattering amplitudes are presented, for tree- and one-loop world-sheets with arbitrary Maxwell instanton number. I elaborate the connection between Maxwell moduli, spectral flow, and instantons. It is argued that the latter serve to extend the Lorentz symmetry from U(1,1) to SO(2,2) by undoing the choice of spacetime complex structure.
The quantum theory of a free particle in two dimensions with non-local boundary conditions on a circle is known to lead to surface and bulk states. Such a scheme is here generalized to the quantized Maxwell field, subject to mixed boundary conditions. If the Robin sector is modified by the addition of a pseudo-differential boundary operator, gauge-invariant boundary conditions are obtained at the price of dealing with gauge-field and ghost operators which become pseudo-differential. A good elliptic theory is then obtained if the kernel occurring in the boundary operator obeys certain summabili…
We analyze the symmetry group of massive Yang-Mills theories and their quantization strongly motivated by an already proposed alternative to the Standard Model of electroweak interactions without Higgs. In these models the mass generation of the intermediate vector bosons is based on a non-Abelian Stueckelberg mechanism where the dynamics of the Goldstone-like bosons is addressed by a partial-trace Non-Linear-Sigma piece of the Lagrangian. In spite of the high non-linearity of the scalar sector, the existence of an infinite number of symmetries, extending the traditional gauge group, allows us…
An axiomatic approach to electrodynamics reveals that Maxwell electrodynamics is just one instance of a variety of theories for which the name electrodynamics is justified. They all have in common that their fundamental input are Maxwell's equations $\textrm{d} F = 0$ (or $F = \textrm{d} A$) and $\textrm{d} H = J$ and a constitutive law $H = # F$ which relates the field strength two-form $F$ and the excitation two-form $H$. A local and linear constitutive law defines what is called local and linear pre-metric electrodynamics whose best known application are the effective description of electro…
Born-Infeld non-linear electrodynamics arises naturally as a field theory description of the dynamics of strings and branes. Most analyses of this theory have been limited to studying it as a classical field theory. We quantize this theory on a Euclidean 4-dimensional space-time lattice and determine its properties using Monte-Carlo simulations. The electromagnetic field around a static point charge is measured using Luscher-Weisz methods to overcome the sign problem associated with the introduction of this charge. The D field appears identical to that of Maxwell QED. However, the E field is e…
