Modified Maxwell electrodynamics, or ModMax for short, is the unique nonlinear extension of Maxwell's theory that preserves its notable symmetries: conformal invariance and electromagnetic duality. ModMax has been studied extensively at the classical level, however remains largely untouched in a quantum context due to its non-analytic nature.
In this thesis, we perform the perturbative quantization of this theory. Using the background field method and dimensional regularization, we obtain novel corrections by calculating the one loop quantum effective action. These corrections vanish in a background with constant field strength, and are not of the form of the classical theory for a general background field. Motivated by the corrections obtained for ModMax, we applied the method developed to quantize ModMax to its two dimensional analogue theory. We similarly obtain the one loop quantum effective action for this theory in a general background by evaluating all one loop Feynman diagrams. In addition, we study the divergence of the separate infinite series of two vertex diagrams.
The Maxwell electromagnetic and the Lorentz type force equations are derived in the framework of the R. Feynman proper time paradigm and the related vacuum field theory approach. The electron inertia problem is analyzed within the Lagrangian and Hamiltonian formalisms and the related pressure-energy compensation principle. The modified Abraham- Lorentz damping radiation force is derived, the electromagnetic electron mass origin is argued.
In order to extend the limits of classical theory application in the microworld some weak generalization of Maxwell electrodynamics is suggested. It is shown that slightly generalized classical Maxwell electrodynamics can describe the intraatomic phenomena with the same success as relativistic quantum mechanics can do. Group-theoretical grounds for the description of fermionic states by bosonic system are presented briefly. The advantages of generalized electrodynamics in intraatomic region in comparison with standard Maxwell electrodynamics are demonstrated on testing example of hydrogen atom…
The Riemann -- Silberstein -- Majorana -- Oppengeimer approach to the Maxwell electrodynamics in presence of electrical sources and arbitrary media is investigated within the matrix formalism. The symmetry of the matrix Maxwell equation under transformations of the complex rotation group SO(3.C) is demonstrated explicitly. In vacuum case, the matrix form includes four real $4 \times 4$ matrices $α^{b}$. In presence of media matrix form requires two sets of $4 \times 4$ matrices, $α^{b}$ and $β^{b}$ -- simple and symmetrical realization of which is given. Relation of $α^{b}$ and $β^{b}$ to the …
The nonlocal electrodynamics of accelerated systems is discussed in connection with the development of Lorentz-invariant nonlocal field equations. Nonlocal Maxwell's equations are presented explicitly for certain linearly accelerated systems. In general, the field equations remain nonlocal even after accelerated motion has ceased.
Theories of non-linear electrodynamics naturally describe deviations from Maxwell's theory in the strong field regime. Among these, of special interest is the recently discovered ModMax electrodynamics, which is a unique 1-parametric generalization of Maxwell's theory that possesses the conformal invariance as well as the electromagnetic duality. In this paper we construct the asymptotically AdS accelerated black holes in this theory and study their thermodynamics - providing thus a first example of accelerated solutions coupled to non-linear electrodynamics. Our study opens a window towards s…
We compare the vortex-like solutions of two different theories in (2+1) dimensions. In the first a nonrelativistic field self-interacts through a Chern-Simons gauge connection. It is $P$ and $T$ violating. The second is the standard Maxwell scalar electrodynamics. We show that for specific values of some parameters the same vortex-configurations provide solutions for both theories.
Dirac's operator and Maxwell's equations in vacuum are derived in the algebra of split octonions. The approximations are given which lead to classical Maxwell-Heaviside equations from full octonionic equations. The non-existence of magnetic monopoles in classical electrodynamics is connected with the using of associativity limit.
We take as starting point the planar model arising from the dimensional reduction of the Maxwell Electrodynamics with the (Lorentz-violating) Carroll-Field-Jackiw term. We then write and study the extended Maxwell equations and the corresponding wave equations for the potentials. The solution to these equations show some interesting deviations from the usual MCS Electrodynamics, with background-dependent correction terms. In the case of a time-like background, the correction terms dominate over the MCS sector in the region far from the origin, and establish the behaviour of a massless Electrod…
It is shown that electro (magneto) static sector of Maxwell's electrodynamics coupled to the dilaton field in a string theory form possesses the symmetry group of the stationary General Relativity in vacuum. Performing the Ernst formalism, we develope a technique for generation of exact solutions in this modified electrodynamics on the base of the normalized Ehlers symmetry transformation. In the electrostatic case, we construct and study a general class of spherically symmetric solutions that describes a point-like sourse of the Coulomb type. It is shown that this source is characterized by a…
The matching method is employed to analytically investigate the properties of holographic superconductors in higher dimensions in the framework of power Maxwell electrodynamics taking into account the effects of spacetime noncommutativity. The relationship between the critical temperature and the charge density and the value of the condensation operator is obtained first. The Meissner like effect is then studied. The analysis indicate that larger values of the noncommutative parameter and the parameter $q$ appearing in the power Maxwell theory makes the condensate difficult to form. The critic…
Magnetized neutron stars constitute a special class of compact objects harbouring gravitational fields that deviate strongly from the Newtonian weak field limit. Moreover strong electromagnetic fields anchored into the star give rise to non-linear corrections to Maxwell equations described by quantum electrodynamics (QED). Electromagnetic fields close to or above the critical value of $\BQ=4.4\times10^9$~T are probably present in some pulsars and for most of the magnetars. To account properly for emission emanating from the neutron star surface like for instance thermal radiation and its polar…
An effective potential is created for the dynamics of a test particle, which preserves dilatation symmetry for nonlinear static dilaton-Maxwell background. It is found that the central interaction in this theory is regular everywhere, and that the theory is asymptotically free at short distances and that it has a Coulomb properties at great distances from the source. It is shown that static and spherically symmetric source, behaves like a soliton: it has the finite energy characteristics that are inversely proportional to the dilaton-Maxwell coupling constant.
We explore the properties of a new Maxwell electrodynamics coupled to a Lorentz-violating background through the presence of higher-derivative terms. Physical implications of this alternative effective theory modified by Lorentz-violating operators of mass dimension-$5$ are considered, such as modified dispersion relations which exhibit the vacuum birefringence phenomenon. Subsequently, we analyze the energy-momentum tensor in the case we reproduce the Gambini-Pullin electrodynamics. We explicitly show that for a background time-like four-vector, $n^μ$, the equations of motion indeed reproduce…
The Riemann -- Silberstein -- Majorana -- Oppenheimer approach to the Maxwell electrodynamics in vacuum is investigated within the matrix formalism. The matrix form of electrodynamics includes three real 4 \times 4 matrices. Within the squaring procedure we construct four formal solutions of the Maxwell equations on the base of scalar Klein -- Fock -- Gordon solutions. The problem of separating physical electromagnetic waves in the linear space λ_{0}Ψ^{0}+λ_{1}Ψ^{1}+λ_{2}Ψ^{2}+ lambda_{3}Ψ^{3} is investigated, several particular cases, plane waves and cylindrical waves, are considered in detai…
Differential regularization is used to investigate the one-loop quantum corrections to Chern-Simons-Maxwell spinor and scalar electrodynamics. We illustrate the techniques to write the loop amplitudes in coordinate space. The short-distance expansion method is developed to perform the Fourier transformation of the amplitudes into momentum space and the possible renormalization ambiguity in Chern-Simons type gauge theories in terms of differential regularization is discussed. We also stress that the surface terms appearing in the differential regularization should be kept along for finite theor…
In this paper we propose a very special relativity (VSR)-inspired generalization of the Maxwell-Chern-Simons (MCS) electrodynamics. This proposal is based upon the construction of a proper study of the SIM$(1)$--VSR gauge-symmetry. It is shown that the VSR nonlocal effects present a significant and health departure from the usual MCS theory. The classical dynamics is analysed in full detail, by studying the solution for the electric field and static energy for this configuration. Afterwards, the interaction energy between opposite charges are derived and we show that the VSR effects play an im…
We study the non-perturbative phenomena of Dynamical Mass Generation and Confinement by truncating at the non-perturbative level the Schwinger-Dyson equations in Maxwell-Chern-Simons planar quantum electrodynamics. We obtain numerical solutions for the fermion propagator in Landau gauge within the so-called rainbow approximation. A comparison with the ordinary theory without the Chern-Simons term is presented.
The least action principle is established for the dynamics of a test particle in a dilaton-Maxwell background. These dynamics and background are invariant under the action of the dilatation transformation; explicit form of the corresponding generalization of the Lorentz force is established for the considered model. On a stationary background, we have found the integral of motion of the energy type. This integral is used to resolve the radial dynamics of test particles in a spherically symmetric electrostatic background.
We have studied BPS vortices in a CPT-odd and Lorentz-violating Maxwell-Chern-Simons-Higgs (MCSH) electrodynamics attained from the dimensional reduction of the Carroll-Field-Jackiw-Higgs model. The Lorentz-violating parameter induces a pronounced behavior at origin (for the magnetic/electric fields and energy density) which is absent in the MCSH vortices. For some combination of the Lorentz-violating coefficients there always exist a sufficiently large winding number $n_{0}$ such that for all $% |n|\geq |n_{0}|$ the magnetic field flips its signal, yielding two well defined regions with oppos…
YES! We introduce a variable power Maxwell nonlinear electrodynamics theory which can remove the singularity of electric field of point-like charges at their locations. One of the main problems of Maxwell's electromagnetic field theory is related to the existence of singularity for electric field of point-like charges at their locations. In other words, the electric field of a point-like charge diverges at the charge location which leads to an infinite self-energy. In order to remove this singularity a few nonlinear electrodynamics (NED) theories have been introduced. Born-Infeld (BI) NED theo…
It is shown how to break the symmetry of a Lagrangian with duality symmetry between electric and magnetic monopoles, so that at low energy, electric monopole interactions continue to be observed but magnetic monopole interactions become very highly suppressed to the point of effectively vanishing. The "zero-charge" problem of source-free electrodynamics is solved by requiring invariance under continuous, local, duality transformations, while local duality symmetry combined with local U(1)EM gauge symmetry leads naturally and surprisingly to an SU(2)D duality gauge group.
We develop a quantization scheme for Maxwell's equations without source on an arbitrary four dimensional globally hyperbolic spacetime. The field strength tensor is the key dynamical object and it is not assumed a priori that it descends from a vector potential. It is shown that, in general, the associated field algebra can contain a non trivial centre and, on account of this, such a theory cannot be described within the framework of general local covariance unless further restrictive assumptions on the topology of the spacetime are made.
The Maxwell-Chern-Simons gauge theory with charged scalar fields is analyzed at two loop level. The effective potential for the scalar fields is derived in the closed form, and studied both analytically and numerically. It is shown that the U(1) symmetry is spontaneously broken in the massless scalar theory. Dimensional transmutation takes place in the Coleman-Weinberg limit in which the Maxwell term vanishes. We point out the subtlety in defining the pure Chern-Simons scalar electrodynamics and show that the Coleman-Weinberg limit must be taken after renormalization. Renormalization group ana…
We explore the effects of Power-Maxwell nonlinear electrodynamics on the properties of holographic s-wave paramagnetic-ferromagnetic phase transition in the background of Schwarzchild Anti-de Sitter (AdS) black hole. For this purpose, we introduce a massive 2-form coupled to the Power-Maxwell field. We perform the numerical shooting method in the probe limit by assuming the Power-Maxwell and the 2-form fields do not back react on the background geometry. We observe that increasing the strength of the power parameter causes the formation of magnetic moment in the black hole background harder an…
Knotted solutions to electromagnetism are investigated as an independent subsector of the theory. We write down a Lagrangian and a Hamiltonian formulation of Bateman's construction for the knotted electromagnetic solutions. We introduce a general definition of the null condition and generalize the construction of Maxwell's theory to massless free complex scalar, its dual two form field, and to a massless DBI scalar. We set up the framework for quantizing the theory both in a path integral approach, as well as the canonical Dirac method for a constrained system. We make several observations abo…
The properties of $(d-1)$-dimensional $s$-wave holographic superconductor in the presence of power-Maxwell field is explored. We study the probe limit in which the scalar and gauge fields do not backreact on the background geometry. Our study is based on the matching of solutions on the boundary and on the horizon at some intermediate point. At first, the case without external magnetic field is considered, and the critical temperature is obtained in terms of the charge density, the dimensionality, and the power-Maxwell exponent. Then, a magnetic field is turned on in the $d$-dimensional bulk w…
In this work we apply the Matsubara-Fradkin formalism and the Nakanishi's auxiliary field method to the quantization of the Podolsky electrodynamics in thermodynamic equilibrium. This approach allows us to write consistently the path integral representation for the partition function of gauge theories in a simple manner. Furthermore, we find the Dyson-Schwinger-Fradkin equations and the Ward-Fradkin-Takahashi identities for the Podolsky theory. We also write the most general form for the polarization tensor in thermodynamic equilibrium.
If the conventional Maxwell--Lorentz formulation of classical electrodynamics is adopted in a flat spacetime of arbitrary odd dimension, then the retarded vector potential $A^μ$ generated by a point charge turns out to be pure gauge, $A^μ=\partial^μχ$. By Gauss' law, the charge shows up as zero. The classical electromagnetic coupling is thus missing from odd-dimensional worlds. If the action is augmented by the addition of the Chern--Simons term, then the classical interaction picture in the three-dimensional world becomes nontrivial.
Light-cone quantization of (3+1)-dimensional electrodynamics is discussed, using discretization as an infrared regulator and paying careful attention to the interplay between gauge choice and boundary conditions. In the zero longitudinal momentum sector of the theory a general gauge fixing is performed and the corresponding relations that determine the constrained modes of the gauge field are obtained. The constraints are solved perturbatively and the structure of the theory is studied to lowest nontrivial order. (Talk presented at ``Theory of Hadrons and Light-Front QCD,'' Polana Zgorzelisko,…
Classical Maxwell and Maxwell-Chern-Simons (MCS) Electrodynamics in (2+1)D are studied in some details. General expressions for the potential and fields are obtained for both models, and some particular cases are explicitly solved. Conceptual and technical difficulties arise, however, for accelerated charges. The propagation of electromagnetic signals is also studied and their reverberation is worked out and discussed. Furthermore, we show that a Dirac-like monopole yields a (static) tangential electric field. We also discuss some classical and quantum consequences of the field created by such…
In this work we focus on the Carroll-Field-Jackiw (CFJ) modified electrodynamics in combination with a CPT-even Lorentz-violating contribution. We add a photon mass term to the Lagrange density and study the question whether this contribution can render the theory unitary. The analysis is based on the pole structure of the modified photon propagator as well as the validity of the optical theorem. We find, indeed, that the massive CFJ-type modification is unitary at tree-level. This result provides a further example for how a photon mass can mitigate malign behaviors.
In the present paper we study the Faddeev-Popov path integral quantization of electrodynamics in an inhomogenious dielectric medium. We quantize all polarizations of the photons and introduce the corresponding ghost fields. Using the heat kernel technique, we express the heat kernel coefficients in terms of the dielectricity $ε(x)$ and calculate the ultra violet divergent terms in the effective action. No cancellation between ghosts and "non-physical" degrees of freedom of the photon is observed.
In this paper, a complete covariant quantization of generalized electrodynamics is shown through the path integral approach. To this goal, we first studied the hamiltonian structure of system following Dirac's methodology and, then, we followed the Faddeev-Senjanovic procedure to obtain the transition amplitude. The complete propagators (Schwinger-Dyson-Fradkin equations) of the correct gauge fixation and the generalized Ward-Fradkin-Takahashi identities are also obtained. Afterwards, an explicit calculation of one-loop approximation of all Green's functions and a discussion about the obtained…
In this paper we consider some new classical effects obtained for a planar electrodynamics with the presence of a higher order derivatives term. The model can be interpreted as a kind of extension for the $3d$ Maxwell-Chern-Simons electrodynamics with higher order derivatives. We consider setups with stationary field sources describing point-like charges and Dirac points. We also investigate this model with the presence of a conducting line (in $3d$ dimensions, it is the equivalent of a conducting plate in $4d$ dimensions). In this case we calculate the propagator for the gauge field and the i…
General linear electrodynamics allow for an arbitrary linear constitutive relation between the field strength two-form and induction two-form density if crucial hyperbolicity and energy conditions are satisfied, which render the theory predictive and physically interpretable. Taking into account the higher-order polynomial dispersion relation and associated causal structure of general linear electrodynamics, we carefully develop its Hamiltonian formulation from first principles. Canonical quantization of the resulting constrained system then results in a quantum vacuum which is sensitive to th…
The inadequacy of Liénard-Wiechert potentials is demonstrated as one of the examples related to the inconsistency of the conventional classical electrodynamics. The insufficiency of the Faraday-Maxwell concept to describe the whole electromagnetic phenomena and the incompleteness of a set of solutions of Maxwell equations are discussed and mathematically proved. Reasons of the introduction of the so-called ``electrodynamics dualism concept" (simultaneous coexistence of instantaneous Newton long-range and Faraday-Maxwell short-range interactions) have been displayed. It is strictly shown that t…
We perform the antifield BRST quantization of duality-symmetric Maxwell theory and show explicitly the quantum equivalence of the different formulations (covariant and non-covariant). The non-covariant gauge-fixed action is used in the computation of propagators for this model.
This paper is dedicated to the study of interactions between external sources for the electromagnetic field in a model which exhibits Lorentz symmetry breaking. We investigate such interactions in the CPT-even photon sector of the Standard Model Extension (SME), where the Lorentz symmetry breaking is caused by a background tensor $K_{(F)αβστ}$. Since the background tensor is very tiny, we treat it perturbatively up to first order and we focus on physical phenomena which have no counterpart in Maxwell electrodynamics. We consider effects related to field sources describing point-like charges, s…
Analyzing the constraint structure of electrodynamics, massive vector bosons, Dirac fermions and electrodynamics coupled to fermions, we show that Dirac quantization method leads to appropriate creation-annihilation algebra among the Forier coefficients of the fields.
An axiomatic approach to electrodynamics reveals that Maxwell electrodynamics is just one instance of a variety of theories for which the name electrodynamics is justified. They all have in common that their fundamental input are Maxwell's equations $\textrm{d} F = 0$ (or $F = \textrm{d} A$) and $\textrm{d} H = J$ and a constitutive law $H = # F$ which relates the field strength two-form $F$ and the excitation two-form $H$. A local and linear constitutive law defines what is called local and linear pre-metric electrodynamics whose best known application are the effective description of electro…
In three dimensional Maxwell-Chern-Simons massless scalar electrodynamics with $ ϕ^6$ coupling, the $U(1)$ symmetry is spontaneously broken at two loop order regardless of the presence or absence of the Maxwell term. Dimensional transmutation takes place in pure Chern-Simons scalar electrodynamics. The beta function for the $ϕ^6$ coupling is independent of gauge couplings.
In the framework of the gauge/gravity duality, and in particular of the $AdS_3/CFT_2$ correspondence, we study one-dimensional superconductors analyzing the dual (1+2)-dimensional gravity in the presence of the Einstein-power-Maxwell non-linear Electrodynamics. In the probe limit we compute the critical temperature of the transition as a function of the mass of the scalar field. The computation is performed analytically employing the Rayleigh-Ritz variational principle. The comparison with a power Maxwell field in higher dimensions as well as with the (1+3)-dimensional Einstein-Maxwell theory …
Pre-metric electrodynamics is a covariant framework for electromagnetism with a general constitutive law. Its lightcone structure can be more complicated than that of Maxwell theory as is shown by the phenomenon of birefringence. We study the energy density of quantized pre-metric electrodynamics theories with linear constitutive laws admitting a single hyperbolicity double-cone and show that averages of the energy density along the worldlines of suitable observers obey a Quantum Energy Inequality (QEI) in states that satisfy a microlocal spectrum condition. The worldlines must meet two condit…
In this letter we study the self-energy of a point-like charge for the electromagnetic field in a non minimal Lorentz symmetry breaking scenario in a $n+1$ dimensional space time. We consider two variations of a model where the Lorentz violation is caused by a background vector $d^ν$ that appears in a higher derivative interaction. We restrict our attention to the case where $d^μ$ is a time-like background vector, namely $d^{2}=d^μd_μ>0$, and we verify that the classical self-energy is finite for any odd spatial dimension $n$ and diverges for even $n$. We also make some comments regarding obst…
Based on an analytic scheme and neglecting the back reaction effect several crucial properties of holographic $ s $- wave superconductors have been investigated in the presence of an external magnetic field in the background of a $ D $ dimensional Schwarzschild AdS space time. Inspired by low energy limit of heterotic string theory, in the present paper we replace the conventional Maxwell action by a Power Maxwell action. Immersing the holographic superconductors in an external static magnetic field the spatially dependent condensate solutions have been obtained analytically. Interestingly eno…
We have performed a complete study of BPS vortex solutions in the Abelian sector of the standard model extension (SME). Specifically, we have coupled the SME electromagnetism with a Higgs field which is supplemented with a Lorentz-violating CPT-even term. We have verified that Lorentz violation (LV) belonging to the Higgs sector allows to interpolate between some well known models like, Maxwell-Higgs, Chern-Simons-Higgs and Maxwell-Chern-Simons-Higgs. We can also observed that the electrical charged density distribution is nonnull in both CPT-even and CPT-odd models; however, the total electri…
We quantize a generalized electromagnetism in 2 + 1 dimensions which contains a higher-order derivative term by using Dirac's method. By introducing auxiliary fields we transform the original theory in a lower-order derivative one which can be treated in a usual way.
We explicitly carry out the symplectic quantization of a family of multi-field Generalized Proca (GP) electrodynamics theories. In the process, we provide an independent derivation of the so-called secondary constraint enforcing relations -- consistency conditions that significantly restrict the allowed interactions in multi-field settings already at the classical level. Additionally, we unveil the existence of quantum consistency conditions, which apply in both single- and multi-field GP scenarios. Our newly found conditions imply that not all classically well-defined (multi-)GP theories are …
We study the Topological Casimir effect, in which extra vacuum energy emerges as a result of the topological features of the theory, rather than due to the conventional fluctuations of the physical propagating degrees of freedom. We compute the corresponding topological term in quantum Maxwell theory defined on a compact manifold. Numerically, the topological effect is much smaller than the conventional Casimir effect. However, we argue that the Topological Casimir Effect is highly sensitive to an external magnetic field, which may help to discriminate it from the conventional Casimir effect. …
We examine the generalized quantum electrodynamics as a natural extension of the Maxwell electrodynamics to cure the one-loop divergence. We establish a precise scenario to discuss the underlying features between photon and fermion where the perturbative Maxwell electrodynamics fails. Our quantum model combines stability, unitarity, and gauge invariance as the central properties. To interpret the quantum fluctuations without suffering from the physical conflicts proved by Haag's theorem, we construct the covariant quantization in the Heisenberg picture instead of the Interaction one. Furthermo…
In this paper, we investigate an electrodynamics in which the physical modes are coupled to a Lorentz-violating (LV) background by means of a higher-derivative term. We analyze the modes associated with the dispersion relations (DRs) obtained from the poles of the propagator. More specifically, we study Maxwell's electrodynamics modified by a LV operator of mass dimension 6. The modification has the form ${D_{βα}}\partial_σF^{σβ}\partial_λ F^{λα}$, i.e., it possesses two additional derivatives coupled to a \textit{CPT}-even tensor $D_{βα}$ that plays the role of the fixed background. We first …
