Face parsing is an important computer vision task that requires accurate pixel segmentation of facial parts (such as eyes, nose, mouth, etc.), providing a basis for further face analysis, modification, and other applications. Interlinked Convolutional Neural Networks (iCNN) was proved to be an effective two-stage model for face parsing. However, the original iCNN was trained separately in two stages, limiting its performance. To solve this problem, we introduce a simple, end-to-end face parsing framework: STN-aided iCNN(STN-iCNN), which extends the iCNN by adding a Spatial Transformer Network (STN) between the two isolated stages. The STN-iCNN uses the STN to provide a trainable connection to the original two-stage iCNN pipeline, making end-to-end joint training possible. Moreover, as a by-product, STN also provides more precise cropped parts than the original cropper. Due to these two advantages, our approach significantly improves the accuracy of the original model. Our model achieved competitive performance on the Helen Dataset, the standard face parsing dataset. It also achieved superior performance on CelebAMask-HQ dataset, proving its good generalization. Our code has been released at https://github.com/aod321/STN-iCNN.

Face parsing is a basic task in face image analysis. It amounts to labeling each pixel with appropriate facial parts such as eyes and nose. In the paper, we present a interlinked convolutional neural network (iCNN) for solving this problem in an end-to-end fashion. A special interlinking layer is designed to allow the CNNs to exchange information, enabling them to integrate local and contextual information efficiently. The hallmark of iCNN is the extensive use of downsampling and upsampling in the in…

The high-level semantic information and low-level details across different convolutional layers are captured by the convolutiona…

Scene parsing is an indispensable component in understanding the semantics within a scene. Traditional methods rely on handcrafted local features and probabilistic graphical models to incorporate local and global cues. Recently, methods based on fully convolutional neural networks have achieved new records on scene parsing. An important strategy common to these methods is the aggregation of hierarchical features yielded by a deep convolutional neural network. However, typical algorithms usually aggregate hierarchical convolutional features via concatenation or linear combination, which cannot …
Scene parsing is a technique that consist on giving a label to all pixels in an image according to the class they belong to. To ensure a good visual coherence and a high class accuracy, it is essential for a scene parser to capture image long range dependencies. In a feed-forward architecture, this can be simply achieved by considering a sufficiently large input context patch, around each pixel to be labeled. We propose an approach consisting of a recurrent convolutional neural network which allows us to consider a large input context, while limiting the capacity of the model. Contrary to most…

We further customize the design of convolution kernels of our fully convolutional network to effectively exploit the statistical priors of the distribution of line angles in real image datasets. We develop an iterative learning method to generate pseudo part segmentation masks from keypoint labels. With these pseudo masks, we train an FCN network to output pixel-level human parsing pred…

Objects at different spatial positions in an image exhibit different scales. Adaptive receptive fields are expected to capture suitable ranges of context for accurate pixel level semantic prediction. Recently, atrous convolution with different dilation rates has been used to generate features of multi-scales through several branches which are then fused for prediction. However, there is a lack of explicit interaction among the branches of different scales to adaptively make full use of the contexts. In this paper, we propose a Content-Adaptive Scale Interaction Network (CASINet) to exploit the…

Face parsing aims to predict pixel-wise labels for facial components of a target face in an image. Existing approaches usually crop the target face from the input image with respect to a bounding box calculated during pre-processing, and thus can only parse inner facial Regions of Interest~(RoIs). Peripheral regions like hair are ignored and nearby faces that are partially included in the bounding box can cause distractions. Moreover, these methods are only trained and evaluated on near-frontal portrait images and thus their performance for in-the-wild cases has been unexplored. To address the…

Face parsing computes pixel-wise label maps for different semantic components (e.g., hair, mouth, eyes) from face images. Existing face parsing literature have illustrated significant advantages by focusing on individual regions of interest (RoIs) for faces and facial components. However, the traditional crop-and-resize focusing mechanism ignores all contextual area outside the RoIs, and thus is not suitable when the component area is unpredictable, e.g. hair. Inspired by the physiological vision system of human, we propose a novel RoI Tanh-warping operator that combines the central vision and…

First, three kinds of part relations, i.e., decomposition, composition, and dependency, are, for the first time, completely and precisely described by three distinct relation networks. Scene parsing, or semantic segmentation, consists in labeling each pixel in an image with the category of the object it belongs to. It is a challenging task that involves the simultaneous detection, segmentation and recognition of all the objects in the image. The scene parsing method proposed here starts by computing a tree of segments from a graph of pixel dissimilarities. Simultaneously, a set of dense feature vectors is computed which encodes regions of multiple sizes centered on each pixel. The feature extractor is a multiscale convolutional network trained from raw pixels. The feature ve…
Part-level attribute parsing is a fundamental but challenging task, which requires the region-level visual understanding to provide explainable details of body parts. Most existing approaches address this problem by adding a regional convolutional neural network (RCNN) with an attribute prediction head to a two-stage detector, in which attributes of body parts are identified from local-wise part boxes. However, local-wise part boxes with limit visual clues (i.e., part appearance only) lead to unsatisfying parsing results, since attributes of body parts are highly dependent on comprehensive rel…

Modelling long-range contextual relationships is critical for pixel-wise prediction tasks such as semantic segmentation. However, convolutional neural networks (CNNs) are inherently limited to model such dependencies due to the naive structure in its building modules (\eg, local convolution kernel). While recent global aggregation methods are beneficial for long-range structure information modelling, they would oversmooth and bring noise to the regions containing fine details (\eg,~boundaries and small objects), which are very much cared for the semantic segmentation task.
