Human skeletons and RGB sequences are both widely-adopted input modalities for human action recognition. However, skeletons lack appearance features and color data suffer large amount of irrelevant depiction. To address this, we introduce human parsing feature map as a novel modality, since it can selectively retain spatiotemporal features of the body parts, while filtering out noises regarding outfits, backgrounds, etc. We propose an Integrating Human Parsing and Pose Network (IPP-Net) for action recognition, which is the first to leverage both skeletons and human parsing feature maps in dual-branch approach. The human pose branch feeds compact skeletal representations of different modalities in graph convolutional network to model pose features. In human parsing branch, multi-frame body-part parsing features are extracted with human detector and parser, which is later learnt using a convolutional backbone. A late ensemble of two branches is adopted to get final predictions, considering both robust keypoints and rich semantic body-part features. Extensive experiments on NTU RGB+D and NTU RGB+D 120 benchmarks consistently verify the effectiveness of the proposed IPP-Net, which outperforms the existing action recognition methods. Our code is publicly available at https://github.com/liujf69/IPP-Net-Parsing .

Action recognition from videos, i.e., classifying a video into one of the pre-defined action types, has been a popular topic in the communities of artificial intelligence, multimedia, and signal processing. However, existing methods usually consider an input video as a whole and learn models, e.g., Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs), with coarse video-level class labels. These methods can only output an action class for the video, but cannot provide fine-grained and explainable cues to answer why the video shows a specific action. Therefore, researchers start to focus on a new task, Part-lev…

According to existing studies, human body edge and pose are two beneficial factors to human parsing. The effectiveness of each of the high-level features (edge and pose) is confirmed through the concatenation of their features with the parsing features. Driven by the insights, this paper studies how human semantic boundaries and keypoint locations can jointly improve human parsing. Compared with the existing practice of feature concatenation, we find that uncovering the correlation among the three factors is a superior way of leveraging the pivotal contextual cues provided by edges and poses. …
Parsing human body into semantic regions is crucial to human-centric analysis. In this paper, we propose a segment-based parsing pipeline that explores human pose information, i.e. the joint location of a human model, which improves the part proposal, accelerates the inference and regularizes the parsing process at the same time. Specifically, we first generate part segment proposals with respect to human joints predicted by a deep model, then part- specific ranking models are trained for segment selection using both pose-based features and deep-learned part potential features. Finally, the be…

Parsing human poses in images is fundamental in extracting critical visual information for artificial intelligent agents. Our goal is to learn self-contained body part representations from images, which we call visual symbols, and their symbol-wise geometric contexts in this parsing process. Each symbol is individually learned by categorizing visual features leveraged by geometric information. In the categorization, we use Latent Support Vector Machine followed by an efficient cross validation procedure to learn visual symbols. Then, these symbols naturally define geometric contexts of body pa…

Human body part parsing, or human semantic part segmentation, is fundamental to many computer vision tasks. In conventional semantic segmentation methods, the ground truth segmentations are provided, and fully convolutional networks (FCN) are trained in an end-to-end scheme. Although these methods have demonstrated impressive results, their performance highly depends on the quantity and quality of training data. In this paper, we present a novel method to generate synthetic human part segmentation data using easily-obtained human keypoint annotations. Our key idea is to exploit the anatomical …

We propose a new 3D holistic++ scene understanding problem, which jointly tackles two tasks from a single-view image: (i) holistic scene parsing and reconstruction---3D estimations of object bounding boxes, camera pose, and room layout, and (ii) 3D human pose estimation. The intuition behind is to leverage the coupled nature of these two tasks to improve the granularity and performance of scene understanding. We propose to exploit two critical and essential connections between these two tasks: (i) human-object interaction (HOI) to model the fine-grained relations between agents and objects in …
This paper presents an attribute and-or grammar (A-AOG) model for jointly inferring human body pose and human attributes in a parse graph with attributes augmented to nodes in the hierarchical representation. In contrast to other popular methods in the current literature that train separate classifiers for poses and individual attributes, our method explicitly represents the decomposition and articulation of body parts, and account for the correlations between poses and attributes. The A-AOG model is an amalgamation of three traditional grammar formulations: (i) Phrase structure grammar repres…

The TLP method is formulated in the Bayesian framework with a spatial and a temporal dynamic programming (DP) algorithms inferring object bounding boxes on-the-fly. During online learning, the AOG is discriminatively learned using latent SVM to account for appearance (e.g., lighting …

Transferring human motion from a source to a target person poses great potential in computer vision and graphics applications. A crucial step is to manipulate sequential future motion while retaining the appearance characteristic.Previous work has either relied on crafted 3D human models or trained a separate model specifically for each target person, which is not scalable in practice. This work studies a more general setting, in which we aim to learn a single model to parsimoniously transfer motion from a source video to any target person given only one image of the person, named as Collaborat…

Most state-of-the-art instance-level human parsing models adopt two-stage anchor-based detectors and, therefore, cannot avoid the heuristic anchor box design and the lack of analysis on a pixel level. To address these two issues, we have designed an instance-level human parsing network which is anchor-free and solvable on a pixel level. It consists of two simple sub-networks: an anchor-free detection head for bounding box predictions and an edge-guided parsing head for human segmentation. The anchor-free detector head inherits the pixel-like merits and effectively avoids the sensitivity of hyp…

In this paper, we propose dense RNNs for scene labeling by exploring various long-range semantic dependencies among image units. Different from existing RNN based approaches, our dense RNNs are able to capture richer contextual dependencies for each image unit by enabling immediate connections between each pair of image units, which significantly enhances their discriminative power. Besides, to select relevant dependencies and meanwhile to restrain irrel…
Face parsing aims to predict pixel-wise labels for facial components of a target face in an image. Existing approaches usually crop the target face from the input image with respect to a bounding box calculated during pre-processing, and thus can only parse inner facial Regions of Interest~(RoIs). Peripheral regions like hair are ignored and nearby faces that are partially included in the bounding box can cause distractions. Moreover, these methods are only trained and evaluated on near-frontal portrait images and thus their performance for in-the-wild cases has been unexplored. To address the…

Person re-identification is a challenging task mainly due to factors such as background clutter, pose, illumination and camera point of view variations. These elements hinder the process of extracting robust and discriminative representations, hence preventing different identities from being successfully distinguished. We pose 3D scene-understanding as a problem of parsing in a grammar. A grammar helps us capture the compositional structure of real-word objects, e.g., a chair is composed of a seat, a back-rest and some legs. Having multiple rules for an object helps us capture structural variations in objects, e.g., a chair can optionally also have arm-rests. Finally, having rules to capture composition at different levels helps us formulate the entire scene-processing pipeline as a single problem of finding most likely parse-tree---small segments combine to form parts of objects, parts to objects and object…

Semantic segmentation for lightweight object parsing is a very challenging task, because both accuracy and efficiency (e.g., execution speed, memory footprint or computational complexity) should all be taken into account. However, most previous works pay too much attention to one-sided perspective, either accuracy or speed, and ignore others, which poses a great limitation to actual demands of intelligent devices. To tackle this dilemma, we propose a novel lightweight architecture named Context-Integrated and Feature-Refined Network (CIFReNet). The core components of CIFReNet are the Long-skip…

To overcome the above limitation, we propose a temporal parsing transformer to decompose the holistic feature into temporal part-level representations. Modelling long-range contextual relationships is critical for pixel-wise prediction tasks such as semantic segmentation. However, convolutional neural networks (CNNs) are inherently limited to model such dependencies due to the naive structure in its building modules (\eg, local convolution kernel). While recent global aggregation methods are beneficial for long-range structure information modelling, they would oversmooth and bring noise to the regions containing fine details (\eg,~boundaries and small objects), which are very much cared for the semantic segmentation task. To solve these problems, we propose a semi-supervised method that can make effective use of images with and without pose annotations.
