In this paper, we focus on designing effective method for fast and accurate scene parsing. A common practice to improve the performance is to attain high resolution feature maps with strong semantic representation. Two strategies are widely used -- atrous convolutions and feature pyramid fusion, are either computation intensive or ineffective. Inspired by the Optical Flow for motion alignment between adjacent video frames, we propose a Flow Alignment Module (FAM) to learn Semantic Flow between feature maps of adjacent levels, and broadcast high-level features to high resolution features effectively and efficiently. Furthermore, integrating our module to a common feature pyramid structure exhibits superior performance over other real-time methods even on light-weight backbone networks, such as ResNet-18. Extensive experiments are conducted on several challenging datasets, including Cityscapes, PASCAL Context, ADE20K and CamVid. Especially, our network is the first to achieve 80.4\% mIoU on Cityscapes with a frame rate of 26 FPS. The code is available at \url{https://github.com/lxtGH/SFSegNets}.

Real-time scene parsing is a fundamental feature for autonomous driving vehicles with multiple cameras. In this letter we demonstrate that sharing semantics between cameras with different perspectives and overlapped views can boost the parsing performance when compared with traditional methods, which individually process the frames from each camera. Our framework is based on a deep neural network for semantic segmentation but with two kinds of additional modules for sharing and fusing semantics. On the one hand, a semantics sharing module is designed to establish the pixel-wise mapping between…
In this work, we address the challenging video scene parsing problem by developing effective representation learning methods given limited parsing annotations. In particular, we contribute two novel methods that constitute a unified parsing framework. (1) \textbf{Predictive feature learning}} from nearly unlimited unlabeled video data. Different from existing methods learning features from single frame parsing, we learn spatiotemporal discriminative features by enforcing a parsing network to predict future frames and their parsing maps (if available) given only historical frames. In this way, …

Scene parsing from images is a fundamental yet challenging problem in visual content understanding. In this dense prediction task, the parsing model assigns every pixel to a categorical label, which requires the contextual information of adjacent image patches. So the challenge for this learning task is to simultaneously describe the geometric and semantic properties of objects or a scene. In this paper, we explore the effective use of multi-layer feature outputs of the deep parsing networks for spatial-semantic consistency by designing a novel feature aggregation module to generate the approp…

Parsing urban scene images benefits many applications, especially self-driving. Most of the current solutions employ generic image parsing models that treat all scales and locations in the images equally and do not consider the geometry property of car-captured urban scene images. Thus, they suffer from heterogeneous object scales caused by perspective projection of cameras on actual scenes and inevitably encounter parsing failures on distant objects as well as other boundary and recognition errors. In this work, we propose a new FoveaNet model to fully exploit the perspective geometry of scen…

Scene parsing is an indispensable component in understanding the semantics within a scene. Traditional methods rely on handcrafted local features and probabilistic graphical models to incorporate local and global cues. Recently, methods based on fully convolutional neural networks have achieved new records on scene parsing. An important strategy common to these methods is the aggregation of hierarchical features yielded by a deep convolutional neural network. However, typical algorithms usually aggregate hierarchical convolutional features via concatenation or linear combination, which cannot …

The ability of predicting the future is important for intelligent systems, e.g. autonomous vehicles and robots to plan early and make decisions accordingly. Future scene parsing and optical flow estimation are two key tasks that help agents better understand their environments as the former provides dense semantic information, i.e. what objects will be present and where they will appear, while the latter provides dense motion information, i.e. how the objects will move. In this paper, we propose a novel model to simultaneously predict scene parsing and optical flow in unobserved future video f…

Different from feedforward CNNs and RNNs with only single feedback, MPF-RNN propagates the contextual features learned at top layer through \textit{multiple} weighted recurrent connections to learn bottom features. Scene graph is structured semantic representation that can be modeled as a form of graph from images and texts. Image-based scene graph generation research has been actively conducted until recently, whereas text-based scene graph generation research has not. In this paper, we focus on the problem of scene graph parsing from textual description of a visual scene. The core idea is to use abstract meaning representation (AMR) instead of the dependency parsing mainly used in previous studies. AMR is a graph-based semantic formalism of natural language which abstracts concepts of words in a senten…

Scene parsing is challenging as it aims to assign one of the semantic categories to each pixel in scene images. Thus, pixel-level features are desired for scene parsing. However, classification networks are dominated by the discriminative portion, so directly applying classification networks to scene parsing will result in inconsistent parsing predictions within one instance and among instances of the same category. To address this problem, we propose two transform units to learn pixel-level consensus features. One is an Instance Consensus Transform (ICT) unit to learn the instance-level conse…

This paper presents a nonparametric scene parsing approach that improves the overall accuracy, as well as the coverage of foreground classes in scene images. We first improve the label likelihood estimates at superpixels by merging likelihood scores from different probabilistic classifiers. This boosts the classification performance and enriches the representation of less-represented classes. Our second contribution consists of incorporating semantic context in the parsing process through global label costs. Our method does not rely on image retrieval sets but rather assigns a global likelihoo…

Nonetheless, synthetically generated data still suffers from severe domain shift while weak labels are often imprecise. Moreover, most existing works for weakly supervised scene parsing are limited to salient foreground objects…

Learning to capture dependencies between spatial positions is essential to many visual tasks, especially the dense labeling problems like scene parsing. Existing methods can effectively capture long-range dependencies with self-attention mechanism while short ones by local convolution. We pose 3D scene-understanding as a problem of parsing in a grammar. A grammar helps us capture the compositional structure of real-word objects, e.g., a chair is composed of a seat, a back-rest and some legs. Having multiple rules for an object helps us capture structural variations in objects, e.g., a chair can optionally also have arm-rests. Finally, having rules to capture composition at different levels helps us formulate the entire scene-processing pipeline as a single problem of finding most likely parse-tree---small segments combine to form parts of objects, parts to objects and object…
