The formulation of relativistic hydrodynamics for massive particles with spin 1/2 is shortly reviewed. The proposed framework is based on the Wigner function treated in a semi-classical approximation or, alternatively, on a classical treatment of spin 1/2. Several theoretical issues regarding the choice of the energy-momentum and spin tensors used to construct the hydrodynamic framework with spin are discussed in parallel.
A global equilibrium state of a spin polarized fluid that undergoes constant acceleration along the stream lines is described as a solution of recently introduced perfect-fluid hydrodynamic equations with spin 1/2.
A newly proposed framework of perfect-fluid relativistic hydrodynamics for particles with spin 1/2 is briefly reviewed. The hydrodynamic equations follow entirely from the conservation laws for energy, momentum, and angular momentum. The incorporation of the angular-momentum conservation requires that the spin polarization tensor is introduced. It plays a role of a Lagrange multiplier conjugated to the spin tensor. The space-time evolution of the spin polarization tensor depends on the specific form chosen for the spin tensor.
Exact correspondence between Israel-Stewart theory and first-order causal and stable hydrodynamics is established for the boost-invariant massive case with zero baryon density and the same constant relaxation times used in the shear and bulk sectors. Explicit expressions for the temperature dependent regulators are given for the case of a relativistic massive gas. The stability and causality conditions known in the first-order approach are applied and one finds that one of them is violated in this case.
Recently introduced equilibrium Wigner functions for spin-one-half particles are used in the semiclassical kinetic equations to study the relation between spin polarization and vorticity. It is found, in particular, that such a framework does not necessarily imply that the thermal-vorticity and spin polarization tensors are equal. Subsequently, a procedure to formulate the hydrodynamic framework for particles with spin-one-half, based on the semiclassical expansion, is outlined.
The framework of anisotropic hydrodynamics is generalized to include finite particle masses. Two schemes are introduced and their predictions compared with exact solutions of the kinetic equation in the relaxation time approximation. The first formulation uses the zeroth and first moments of the kinetic equation, whereas the second formulation uses the first and second moments. For the case of one-dimensional boost-invariant expansion, our numerical results indicate that the second formulation yields much better agreement with the exact solutions.
We present the explicit expressions of different pseudo-gauge transformations for Dirac and Proca fields considering a general interaction term. The particular case of the interaction of Dirac and Proca fields with a background electromagnetic field is also studied. Starting from the quantum kinetic theory with collisions derived from the Wigner-function formalism for massive spin-1/2 and spin-1 particles, we establish a connection between different pseudo-gauges and relativistic spin hydrodynamics. The physical implications of the various decompositions of orbital and spin angular momentum ar…
Recent progress in the formulation of relativistic hydrodynamics for particles with spin one-half is reviewed. We start with general arguments advising introduction of a tensor spin chemical potential that plays a role of the Lagrange multiplier coupled to the spin angular momentum. Then, we turn to a discussion of spin-dependent distribution functions that have been recently proposed to construct a hydrodynamic framework including spin and serve as a tool in phenomenological studies of hadron polarization. Distribution functions of this type are subsequently used to construct the equilibrium …

Recently advocated expressions for the phase-space dependent spin-1/2 density matrices of particles and antiparticles are analyzed in detail and reduced to the forms linear in the Dirac spin operator. This allows for a natural determination of the spin polarization vectors of particles and antiparticles by the trace of products of the spin density matrices and the Pauli matrices. We demonstrate that the total spin polarization vector obtained in this way agrees with the Pauli-Lubanski four-vector, constructed from an appropriately chosen spin tensor and boosted to the particle rest frame. We f…
We derive relativistic dissipative spin hydrodynamics from kinetic theory featuring a nonlocal collision term using the method of moments. In this framework, the components of the spin tensor are dynamical variables which obey relaxation-type equations. We find that the corresponding relaxation times are determined by the local part of the collision term, while the nonlocal part contributes to the Navier-Stokes terms in these equations of motion. The spin relaxation time scales are comparable to those of the usual dissipative currents. Finally, the Navier-Stokes limit of the Pauli-Lubanski vec…
Relativistic hydrodynamic equations for particles with spin one-half are used to determine the space-time evolution of the spin polarization in a boost-invariant and transversely homogeneous background. The hydrodynamic approach uses the forms of the energy-momentum and spin tensors based on de Groot, van Leeuwen, and van Weert formalism. Our calculations illustrate how the formalism of hydrodynamics with spin can be used to determine physical observables related to the spin polarization and how the latter can be compared with the experimental data.
In this article we review the perfect-fluid hydrodynamics with spin framework proposed recently. This framework generalises the standard relativistic hydrodynamics framework to include spin degrees of freedom and provides a natural method to describe the spin polarization evolution of massive spin 1/2 particles. This formalism is based on the GLW (de Groot - van Leeuwen - van Weert) energy-momentum tensor and spin tensor. We show here using Bjorken model that how this spin hydrodynamics framework may be used for the determination of the observables which describes the particle polarization mea…
We derive a system of moment-based dynamical equations that describe the 1+1d space-time evolution of a cylindrically symmetric massive gas undergoing boost-invariant longitudinal expansion. Extending previous work, we introduce an explicit degree of freedom associated with the bulk pressure of the system. The resulting form generalizes the ellipsoidal one-particle distribution function appropriate for massless particles to massive particles. Using this generalized form, we obtain a system of partial differential equations that can be solved numerically. In order to assess the performance of t…
We argue that a detailed analysis of the spin alignement of vector mesons can serve as a probe of two little-understood aspects of spin dynamics in the vortical fluid: The degree of relaxation between vorticity and parton spin polarization, and the degree of coherence of the hadron wavefunction at freeze-out. We illustrate these with a coalescence model.
We briefly review a recently proposed formalism of perfect-fluid hydrodynamics with spin, which is a generalization of the standard hydrodynamic framework and provides a natural tool for describing the evolution of spin-polarized systems of particles with spin 1/2. It is based on the de Groot - van Leeuwen - van Weert forms of energy-momentum and spin tensors and conservation laws. Using Bjorken symmetry we show how this formalism may be used to determine observables describing the polarization of particles measured in the experiment.

We summarize the key ingredients of the recently proposed formalism of relativistic perfect-fluid hydrodynamics with spin. Based on the underlying kinetic theory definitions for the equilibrium distribution functions we obtain the evolution equations governing the system's expansion. Employing Bjorken symmetry we study the spin polarization dynamics of the system.
We revisit the construction of first-order spin hydrodynamics and find that the constitution relations receive the corrections from the cross effects resulting from spin-orbit coupling. Starting from a routine entropy analysis, we show how to identify cross effects and new cross transport coefficients from the second law of thermodynamics. Interestingly, the conventional transport coefficient heat conductivity $κ$ is bounded from below by the product of cross transport coefficients, which means the threshold of heat conduction is changed. With recourse to Zubarev's non-equilibrium statistical …
The propagation properties of spin degrees of freedom are analyzed in the framework of relativistic hydrodynamics with spin based on the de Groot--van Leeuwen--van Weert definitions of the energy-momentum and spin tensors. We derive the analytical expression for the spin wave velocity for arbitrary statistics and show that it goes to half the speed of light in the ultra-relativistic limit. We find that only the transverse degrees of freedom propagate, analogously to electromagnetic waves. Finally, we consider the effect of dissipative corrections and calculate the damping coefficients for the …
We study the causality and stability of relativistic hydrodynamics with the inclusion of the spin degree of freedom as a hydrodynamic field. We consider two specific models of spin-hydrodynamics for this purpose. A linear mode analysis for static background shows that a first-order dissipative spin-hydrodynamics remains acausal and admits instabilities. Besides, it is found that the inclusion of the spin field in hydrodynamics leads to new kinds of linear modes in the system. These new modes also exhibit instability and acausal behavior. The second model of the spin-hydrodynamics that we have …
The total angular momentum is conserved in the evolution of the Quark-Gluon Plasma (QGP) created in heavy-ion collision, and consists of two sectors: the orbital angular momentum (OAM) caused by kinetic motion, and the spin, an intrinsic degree of freedom of quarks and gluons. Microscopic scattering processes allow the conversion between these two components, hence the spin density could eventually have non-trivial influence on the QGP evolution. A hydrodynamic theory, with the spin polarization effect properly taken into account, is required to quantitatively study the polarization rate for o…
We have derived the analytic solutions of dissipative relativistic spin hydrodynamics with Gubser expansion. Following the standard strategy of deriving the solutions in a Gubser flow, we take the Weyl rescaling and obtain the energy-momentum and angular momentum conversation equations in the $dS_{3}\times\mathbb{R}$ space-time. We then derive the analytic solutions of spin density, spin potential and other thermodynamic in $dS_{3}\times\mathbb{R}$ space-time and transform them back into Minkowski space-time $\mathbb{R}^{3,1}$. In the Minkowski space-time, the spin density and spin potential i…
We derive a set of nontrivial relations between second-order transport coefficients which follow from the second law of thermodynamics upon considering a regime close to uniform rotation of the fluid. We demonstrate that extension of hydrodynamics by spin variable is equivalent to modifying conventional hydrodynamics by a set of second-order terms satisfying the relations we derived. We point out that a novel contribution to the heat current orthogonal to vorticity and temperature gradient reminiscent of the thermal Hall effect is constrained by the second law.
We systematically analyze the effects of the derivatives of the hydrodynamic fields on axial Wigner function that describes the spin polarization vector in phase space. We have included all possible first-order derivative contributions that are allowed by symmetry and compute the associated transport functions at one-loop using the linear response theory. In addition to reproducing known effects due to the temperature gradient and vorticity, we have identified a number of potentially significant contributions that are overlooked previously. In particular, we find that the shear strength, the s…
In this work, we start with chiral kinetic theory and construct the spin hydrodynamic framework for a chiral spinor system. Using the 14-moment expansion formalism, we obtain the equations of motion of second-order dissipative relativistic fluid dynamics with non-trivial spin polarization density. In a chiral spinor system, the spin alignment effect could be treated in the same framework as the Chiral Vortical Effect (CVE). However, the quantum corrections due to fluid vorticity induce not only CVE terms in the vector/axial charge currents but also corrections to the stress tensor. In this fra…
Newly introduced equilibrium Wigner functions for particles with spin one-half are used in the semi-classical kinetic equations to study a possible relation between thermal vorticity and spin polarization. It is shown that in global equilibrium both the thermal-vorticity and spin polarization tensors are constant but not necessarily equal. In the case of local equilibrium, we define a procedure leading to hydrodynamic equations with spin. We introduce such equations for the de~Groot, van~Leeuwen, and van~Weert (GLW) formalism as well as for the canonical scheme (these two frameworks differ by …
Using the second law of local thermodynamics and the first-order Palatini formalism, we formulate relativistic spin hydrodynamics for quantum field theories with Dirac fermions, such as QED and QCD, in a torsionful curved background. We work in a regime where spin density, which is assumed to relax much slower than other non-hydrodynamic modes, is treated as an independent degree of freedom in an extended hydrodynamic description. Spin hydrodynamics in our approach contains only three non-hydrodynamic modes corresponding to a spin vector, whose relaxation time is controlled by a new transport …
We study relativistic hydrodynamics in the presence of a non vanishing spin chemical potential. Using a variety of techniques we carry out an exhaustive analysis, and identify the constitutive relations for the stress tensor and spin current in such a setup, allowing us to write the hydrodynamic equations of motion to second order in derivatives. We then solve the equations of motion in a perturbative setup and find surprisingly good agreement with measurements of global $Λ$-hyperon polarization carried out at RHIC.
We review the key steps of the relativistic fluid dynamics formalism with spin degrees of freedom initiated recently. We obtain equations of motion of the expansion of the system from the underlying definitions of quantum kinetic theory for the equilibrium phase space distribution functions. We investigate the dynamics of spin polarization of the system in the Bjorken hydrodynamical background.
