Let $X$ be a projective variety and $σ$ a wild automorphism on $X$, i.e., whenever $σ(Z) = Z$ for a non-empty Zariski-closed subset $Z$ of $X$, we have $Z = X$. Then $X$ is conjectured to be an abelian variety with $σ$ of zero entropy (and proved to be so when ${\rm dim} \, X \le 2$) by Z. Reichstein, D. Rogalski and J. J. Zhang in their study of projectively simple rings. This conjecture has been generally open for more than a decade. In this note, we confirm this original conjecture when ${\rm dim} \, X \le 3$ and $X$ is not a Calabi-Yau threefold, and also show that $σ$ is of zero entropy when ${\rm dim} \, X \le 4$ and the Kodaira dimension $κ(X) \ge 0$.
We prove a theorem of Tits type for automorphism groups of projective varieties over an algebraically closed field of arbitrary characteristic, which was first conjectured by Keum, Oguiso and Zhang for complex projective varieties.
In 2004 Shestakov and Umirbaev proved that the Nagata automorphism of the polynomial algebra in three variables is wild. We fix a Z-grading on this algebra and consider graded-wild automorphisms, i.e. such automorphisms that can not be decomposed onto elementary automorphisms respecting the grading. We describe all gradings allowing graded-wild automorphisms.
For any given Salem number, we construct an automorphism on a simple abelian variety whose first dynamical degree is the square of the Salem number. Our construction works for both simple abelian varieties with totally indefinite quaternion multiplication and for simple abelian varieties of the second kind. We then give a complete classification of the dynamical degree sequences for abelian varieties of dimension at most four and obtain an ergodic result for sequences of pullbacks of forms.
We prove the existence of wild automorphisms on an affine quadric threefold. The method we use is an adaptation of the one used by Shestakov and Umirbaev to prove the existence of wild automorphisms on the affine three dimensional space.
We determine the geometric structure of a minimal projective threefold having two `independent and commutative' automorphisms of positive topological entropy, and generalize this result to higher-dimensional smooth minimal pairs (X, G). As a consequence, we give an effective lower bound for the first dynamical degree of these automorphisms of X fitting the `boundary case'.
In characteristic $p=2$, we compute the singularities of Kummer varieties arising from products of elliptic curves. This result is generalized to Kummer varieties associated to ordinary abelian varieties.
We confirm, to some extent, the belief that a projective variety X has the largest number (relative to the dimension of X) of independent commuting automorphisms of positive entropy only when X is birational to a complex torus or a quotient of a torus. We also include an addendum to an early paper though it is not used in the present paper.
In this paper, we investigate when there exists a wild hypersurface bundle over a smooth proper toric variety in positive characteristic. In particular, we determine the possibilities for toric varieties with Picard number at most three or toric Fano varieties of dimension at most four. Moreover, we can construct wild hypersurface bundles over them.
We define Enriques varieties as a higher dimensional generalization of Enriques surfaces and construct examples by using fixed point free automorphisms on generalized Kummer varieties. We also classify all automorphisms of generalized Kummer varieties that come from an automorphism of the underlying abelian surface.
Let $A$ be an abelian variety over an algebraically closed field. We show that $A$ is the automorphism group scheme of some smooth projective variety if and only if $A$ has only finitely many automorphisms as an algebraic group. This generalizes a result of Lombardo and Maffei for complex abelian varieties.
We slightly extend a result of Oguiso on birational or automorphism groups (resp. of Lazić - Peternell on Morrison-Kawamata cone conjecture) from Calabi-Yau manifolds of Picard number two to arbitrary singular varieties X (resp. to klt Calabi-Yau pairs in broad sense) of Picard number two. When X has only klt singularities and is not a complex torus, we show that either Aut(X) is almost cyclic, or it has only finitely many connected components.
In 2007, Dubouloz introduced Danielewski varieties. Such varieties generalize Danielewski surfaces and provide counterexamples to generalized Zariski cancellation problem in arbitrary dimension. In the present work we describe the automorphism group of a Danielewski variety. This result is a generalization of a description of automorphisms of Danielewski surfaces due to Makar-Limanov.
We classify the polarized symplectic automorphisms of Fano varieties of smooth cubic fourfolds (equipped with the Plücker polarization) and study the fixed loci.
In this note we show that the set mdeg(Aut(C^3)) mdeg(Tame(C^3)) is not empty. Moreover we show that this set has infinitely many elements. Since for the famous Nagata's example N of wild automorphism, mdeg N =(5,3,1) is an element of mdeg(Tame(C^3)) and since for other known examples of wild automorphisms the multidegree is of the form (1,d_2,d_3) (after permutation if neccesary), then we give the very first exmple of wild automorphism F of C^3 such that mdeg F does not belong to mdeg(Tame(C^3)). We also show that, if d_1,d_2 are odd numbers such that gcd (d_1,d_2) =1, then (d_1,d_2,d_3) belo…
In this paper we prove criteria for a nonnormal toric variety to be flexible, to be rigid and to be almost rigid. For rigid and almost rigid toric varieties we describe the automorphism group explicitly.
In the present paper, we will first present briefly a general research program about the study of the "natural dynamics" on character varieties and wild character varieties. Afterwards, we will illustrate this program in the context of the Painlevé differential equations $P_{\rm VI}$ and $P_{\rm V}$.
We survey recent results on ample cones and birational contractions of holomorphic symplectic varieties of K3 type, focusing on explicit constructions and concrete examples.
A string theoretic framework is constructed relating the cohomology of wild character varieties to refined stable pair theory and torus link invariants. Explicit conjectural formulas are derived for wild character varieties with a unique irregular point on the projective line. For this case the string theoretic construction leads to a conjectural colored generalization of existing results of Hausel, Mereb and Wong as well as Shende, Treumann and Zaslow.
In this paper we describe orbits of automorphism group on a horospherical variety in terms of degrees of homogeneous with respect to natural grading locally nilpotent derivations. In case of (may be non-normal) toric varieties a description of orbits of automorphism group in terms of corresponding weight monoid is obtained.
In this work we extend some previously known results on the automorphism group of Schubert varieties. We consider the Schubert conditions which define a Schubert variety. An automorphism of the Grassmannian fixes a Schubert variety contained in it if and only if it fixes certain elements of the flag used to define the Schubert conditions.
Let X be a flexible variety of F be an isomorphism of closed one-dimensional subschemes of $X$. We develop criteria which guarantee that F extends to au automorphism of X.
Conjectural results for cohomological invariants of wild character varieties are obtained by counting curves in degenerate Calabi-Yau threefolds. A conjectural formula for E-polynomials is derived from the Gromov-Witten theory of local Calabi-Yau threefolds with normal crossing singularities. A refinement is also conjectured, generalizing existing results of Hausel, Mereb and Wong as well as recent joint work of Donagi, Pantev and the author for weighted Poincaré polynomials of wild character varieties.
The automorphism group of a projective bundle P(E) over a simplicial toric variety is described when the bundle E is a direct sum of line bundles. Applications to study of moduli of complete intersections on toric varieties, including Calabi Yau m-folds and Del Pezzo surfaces, are indicated.
We characterize simple complex abelian varieties and simple abelian surfaces in terms of primitivity of translation automorphisms. Applying this together with a result due to Diller and Favre, we then classify all primitive birational automorphisms with trivial first dynamical degree of smooth projective surfaces over an algebraically closed field of any characteristic.
Mukai varieties are Fano varieties of Picard number one and coindex three. In genus seven to ten they are linear sections of some special homogeneous varieties. We describe the generic automorphism groups of these varieties. When they are expected to be trivial for dimensional reasons, we show they are indeed trivial, up to three interesting and unexpected exceptions in genera 7, 8, 9, and codimension 4, 3, 2 respectively. We conclude in particular that a generic prime Fano threefold of genus g has no automorphisms for 7 $\le$ g $\le$ 10. In the Appendix by Y. Prokhorov, the latter statement i…
We study finite $p$-subgroups of birational automorphism groups. By virtue of boundedness theorem of Fano varieties, we prove that there exists a constant $R(n)$ such that a rationally connected variety of dimension $n$ over an algebraically closed field is rational if its birational automorphism group contains a $p$-subgroups of maximal rank for $p > R(n)$. Some related applications on Jordan property are discussed.
We show that the number of birational automorphisms of a variety of general type X is bounded by c \cdot \vol(X,K_X), where c is a constant which only depends on the dimension of X.
In 2013 Bazhov proved a criterium for two points on a complete toric variety to lie in the same orbit of the neutral component of automorphism group. This criterium is in terms of divisor class group. Arzhantsev-Bazhov (2013) obtained a similar criterium for affine toric varieties. We prove a necessary condition similar this criteria to the cases of affine and projective horospherical varieties.
We count points over a finite field on wild character varieties of Riemann surfaces for singularities with regular semisimple leading term. The new feature in our counting formulas is the appearance of characters of Yokonuma-Hecke algebras. Our result leads to the conjecture that the mixed Hodge polynomials of these character varieties agree with previously conjectured perverse Hodge polynomials of certain twisted parabolic Higgs moduli spaces, indicating the possibility of a P=W conjecture for a suitable wild Hitchin system.
We give an explicit description of the automorphism group of a product of complete toric varieties over an arbitrary field in terms of the respective automorphism groups of its components. More precisely, we prove that, up to permutation of isomorphic components, an automorphism of a product corresponds to a product of automorphisms of its components. We also reprove, in modern language, the classic result by Demazure describing the group-scheme of automorphisms of a complete toric variety over an arbitrary field.
The aim of the paper is twofold. First, some results of Shiota and Plaza-Martin on Prym varieties of curves with an involution are generalized to the general case of an arbitrary automorphism of prime order. Second, the equations defining the moduli space of curves with an automorphism of prime order as a subscheme of the Sato Grassmannian are given.
A family of new algebraic Poisson varieties will be constructed, generalising the complex character varieties of Riemann surfaces. Then the well-known (Poisson) mapping class group actions on the character varieties will be generalised.
The aim of this work is to provide the first examples of $n$-dimensional varieties of wild representation type, for arbitrary $n\geq 2$. More precisely, we prove that all Fano blow-ups of $\PP^n$ at a finite number of points are of wild representation type exhibiting families of dimension of order $r^2$ of simple (hence, indecomposable) ACM rank $r$ vector bundles for any $r\geq n$. In the two dimensional case, the vector bundles that we construct are moreover Ulrich bundles and $μ$-stable with respect to certain ample divisor.
Determining when the birational automorphism group of a Fano variety is finite is an interesting and difficult problem. The main technique for studying this problem is by the Noether-Fano method. This method has been effective in studying this problem for Fano varieties of index one and two. The purpose of this paper is to give a new approach to this problem, and to show that in every positive characteristic there are Fano varieties of arbitrarily large index with finite (or even trivial) birational automorphisms. To do this we prove that these varieties admit ample and birationally equivarian…
We prove that the automorphism groups of simple polarized abelian varieties of odd prime dimension over finite fields are cyclic, and give a complete list of finite groups that can be realized as such automorphism groups.
We show that on an Abelian variety over an algebraically closed field of positive characteristic, the obstruction to lifting an automorphism to an Abelian variety over a field of characteristic zero as a morphism vanishes if and only if it vanishes for lifting it as an autoequivalence. We also compare the deformation space of these two types of deformations.
We will give several descriptions of some basic examples of wild character varieties, including a discussion of links to work of Sibuya, Calabi and Euler, amongst others.
We prove that there exists a positive number $C_{n}$ depending only on $n$ such that for every smooth projective $n$-fold of general type $X$ defined over {\bf C}, the automorphism group $Aut(X)$ satisfies the inequality $\sharp{Aut}(X)\leq C_{n}\cdotμ(X,K_{X})$, where $μ(X,K_{X})$ is the volume of $X$ with respect to $K_{X}$.
Let G be a complex semisimple linear algebraic group, and X a wonderful G-variety. We determine the connected automorphism group of X and we calculate Luna's invariants of X under its action.

Let $G$ be a connected reductive algebraic group. In this note we prove that for a quasi-affine $G$-spherical variety the weight monoid is determined by the weights of its non-trivial $\mathbb{G}_a$-actions that are homogeneous with respect to a Borel subgroup of $G$. As an application we get that a smooth affine $G$-spherical variety that is non-isomorphic to a torus is determined by its automorphism group inside the category of smooth affine irreducible varieties.
We give a way to construct group of pseudo-automorphisms of rational varieties of any dimension that fix pointwise the image of a cubic hypersurface of $P^n. These group are free products of involutions, and most of their elements have dynamical degree >1. Moreover, the Picard group of the varieties obtained is not big, if the dimension is at least 3. We also answer a question of E. Bedford on the existence of birational maps of the plane that cannot be lifted to automorphisms of dynamical degree >1, even if we compose them with an automorphism of the plane.
We introduce a new class of algebraic varieties which we call frieze varieties. Each frieze variety is determined by an acyclic quiver. The frieze variety is defined in an elementary recursive way by constructing a set of points in affine space. From a more conceptual viewpoint, the coordinates of these points are specializations of cluster variables in the cluster algebra associated to the quiver. We give a new characterization of the finite--tame--wild trichotomy for acyclic quivers in terms of their frieze varieties. We show that an acyclic quiver is representation finite, tame, or wild, re…
