Topological materials are expected to show distinct transport signatures due to their unique band-inversion character and band-crossing points. However, the intentional modulation of such topological responses by experimentally feasible means is less explored. Here, an unusual elevation of anomalous Hall effect (AHE) is obtained in electron(Ni)-doped magnetic Weyl semimetal Co3-xNixSn2S2, showing peak values of anomalous Hall-conductivity, Hall-angle and Hall-factor at a relatively low doping level of x = 0.11. The separation of intrinsic and extrinsic contributions to total AHE using TYJ scaling model indicates that such significant enhancement is dominated by the intrinsic mechanism of electronic Berry curvature. Theoretical calculations reveal that compared with the Fermi-level shifting from electron filling, a usually overlooked effect of doping, i.e., local disorder, imposes a striking effect on broadening the bands and narrowing the inverted gap, and thus results in an elevation of the integrated Berry curvature. Our results not only realize the enhancement of AHE in a magnetic Weyl semimetal, but also provide a practical design principle to modulate the bands and transport properties in topological materials, by exploiting the disorder effect of doping.
Electronic transport properties of bismuth nanocontacts are analyzed by means of a low temperature scanning tunneling microscope. The subquantum steps observed in the conductance versus elongation curves give evidence of atomic rearrangements in the contact. The underlying quantum nature of the conductance reveals itself through peaks in the conductance histograms. The shape of the conductance curves at 77 K is well described by a simple gliding mechanism for the contact evolution during elongation. The strikingly different behaviour at 4 K suggests a charge carrier transition from light to he…
Majorana zero modes (MZMs), fundamental building blocks for realizing topological quantum computers, can appear at the interface between a superconductor and a topological material. One of the experimental signatures that has been widely pursued to confirm the existence of MZMs is the observation of a large, quantized zero-bias conductance peak (ZBCP) in the differential conductance measurements. In this Letter, we report observation of such a large ZBCP in junction structures of normal metal (titanium/gold Ti/Au) + Dirac semimetal (cadmium arsenide Cd3As2) + conventional superconductor (alumi…
We demonstrate quantum dot (QD) formation in three-dimensional Dirac semimetal Cd$_{3}$As$_{2}$ nanowires using two electrostatically tuned p$-$n junctions with a gate and magnetic fields. The linear conductance measured as a function of gate voltage under high magnetic fields is strongly suppressed at the Dirac point close to zero conductance, showing strong conductance oscillations. Remarkably, in this regime, the Cd$_{3}$As$_{2}$ nanowire device exhibits Coulomb diamond features, indicating that a clean single QD forms in the Dirac semimetal nanowire. Our results show that a p$-$type QD can…
We study the effect of the Rashba spin-orbit coupling on the Fermi arcs of topological Dirac semimetals. The Rashba coupling is induced by breaking the inversion symmetry at the surface. Remarkably, this coupling could be enhanced by the interaction with the substrate and controlled by an external electric field. We study analytically and numerically the rotation of the spin of the surface states as a function of the electron's momentum and the coupling strength. Furthermore, a detailed analysis of the spin-dependent two-terminal conductance is presented in the clean limit and with the additio…
The carrier dynamics and electronic structures of type-II Weyl semimetal candidates MoTe$_2$ and WTe$_2$ have been investigated by using temperature-dependent optical conductivity [$σ(ω)$] spectra. Two kinds of Drude peaks (narrow and broad) have been separately observed. The width of the broad Drude peak increases with elevating temperature above the Debye temperature of about 130 K in the same way as those of normal metals, on the other hand, the narrow Drude peak becomes visible below 80 K and the width is rapidly suppressed with decreasing temperature. Because the temperature dependence of…
A quantum spin hall insulator(QSHI) is manifested by its conducting edge channels that originate from the nontrivial topology of the insulating bulk states. Monolayer 1T'-WTe2 exhibits this quantized edge conductance in transport measurements, but because of its semimetallic nature, the coherence length is restricted to around 100 nm. To overcome this restriction, we propose a strain engineering technique to tune the electronic structure, where either a compressive strain along a axis or a tensile strain along b axis can drive 1T'-WTe2 into an full gap insulating phase. A combined study of mol…
We study the zero temperature conductance and magnetoconductance of ballistic \textit{p-n} junctions in Weyl semimetals. Electron transport is mediated by Klein tunneling between \textit{n}- and \textit{p}- regions. The chiral anomaly that is realized in Weyl semimetals plays a crucial role in the magnetoconductance of the junction. With the exception of field orientations where the angle between $\mathbf{B}$ and the junction plane is small, magnetoconductance is positive and linear in $B$ at both weak and strong magnetic fields. In contrast, magnetoconductance in conventional \textit{p-n} jun…
Topological materials with both insulating and semimetal phases can be protected by crystalline (e.g. mirror) symmetry. The insulating phase, called topological crystalline insulator (TCI), has been intensively investigated and observed in three-dimensional materials. However, the predicted two-dimensional (2D) materials with TCI phase are explored much less than 3D TCIs and 2D topological insulator, while so far considered 2D TCIs almost exclusively possess a square lattice structure with the mirror Chern number $\mathcal C_{M} =-2$. Here, we predict theoretically that hexagonal monolayer of …
Synthesis of crystallographically well-defined thin films of topological materials is important for unraveling their mesoscale quantum properties and for device applications. Mn$_3$Ge, an antiferromagnetic Weyl semimetal with a chiral magnetic structure on a Kagome lattice, is expected to have enhanced Berry curvature around Weyl nodes near the Fermi energy, leading to large anomalous Hall / Nernst effects and a large spin-Hall effect. Using magnetron sputtering, we have grown epitaxial thin films of hexagonal D0$_{19}$ Mn$_3$Ge that are flat and continuous. Large anomalous Nernst and inverse …
We study electronic and thermoelectric transport in a type I Weyl semimetal nanojunction, with a torsional dislocation defect, in the presence of an external magnetic field parallel to the dislocation axis. The defect is modeled in a cylindrical geometry, as a combination of a gauge field accounting for torsional strain, and a delta-potential barrier for the lattice mismatch effect. In the Landauer formalism, we find that due to the combination of strain and magnetic field, the electric current exhibits chiral valley-polarization, and the conductance displays the signature of Landau levels. We…
A van der Waals coupled Weyl semimetal material NbIrTe4 is investigated by combining scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy and first principles calculations. We observe a sharp peak in the tunneling conductance near the zero bias energy, and its origin is ascribed to a van Hove singularity associated with a Lifshitz transition of the topologically none trivial Fermi arc states. Furthermore, tunneling spectroscopy measurements show a surprisingly large signature of electron boson coupling, which presumably represents anomalously enhanced electron phonon coupling through the enhanced charge…
We propose a minimal tight-binding model for thin films made of topological crystalline insulator (TCI) on the basis of the mirror and discrete rotational symmetries. The basic term consists of the spin-orbit interaction describing a Weyl semimetal, where gapless Dirac cones emerge at all the high symmetry points in the momentum space. We then introduce the mass term providing gaps to Dirac cones at our disposal. They simulate the thin films made of the [001], [111] and [110] TCI surfaces. TCI thin films are topological insulators protected by the mirror symmetry. We analyze the mirror-Chern n…
It is highly desirable to combine recent advances in the topological quantum phases with technologically relevant materials. Chromium dioxide (CrO2) is a half-metallic material, widely used in high-end data storage applications. Using first principles calculations, we show via interfacial orbital design that a novel class of half semi-metallic Dirac electronic phase emerges at the interface CrO2 with TiO2 in both thin film and superlattice configurations, with four spin-polarized Dirac points in momentum-space (k-space) band structure. When the spin and orbital degrees of freedom are allowed t…
Usually, the octet rule has limited the 2D materials by elements within groups IIIA_VA, whose outmost electrons can be considered to form hybridization orbit by s wave and p wave. The hybridization orbits can accommodate all the outmost electrons and form robust sigma bonds. Over VA group, the outmost electrons seem too abundant to be utilized in hybridization orbits. Here we show a spd2 hybridization rule, accommodating all the outmost electron of halogen elements. Each atom can be connected with contiguous atom by robust sigma bond, and carries one dangling lone-unpaired electron, implying f…
We report investigations on the magnetotransport in LaSb, which exhibits extremely large magnetoresistance (XMR). Foremost, we demonstrate that the resistivity plateau can be explained without invoking topological protection. We then determine the Fermi surface from Shubnikov - de Haas (SdH) quantum oscillation measurements and find good agreement with the bulk Fermi pockets derived from first principle calculations. Using a semiclassical theory and the experimentally determined Fermi pocket anisotropies, we quantitatively describe the orbital magnetoresistance, including its angle dependence.…
The electrical conductance of molecular beam epitaxial Bi on BaF2(111) was measured as a function of both film thickness (4-540 nm) and temperature (5-300 K). Unlike bulk Bi as a prototype semimetal, the Bi thin films up to 90 nm are found to be insulating in the interiors but metallic on the surfaces. This result has not only resolved unambiguously the long controversy about the existence of semimetal-semiconductor transition in Bi thin film but also provided a straightforward interpretation for the long-puzzled temperature dependence of the resistivity of Bi thin films, which in turn might s…
Weyl semimetals are characterized by their bulk Weyl points -- conical band touching points that carry a topological monopole charge -- and Fermi arc states that span between the Weyl points on the surface of the material. Recently, significant progress has been made towards understanding and measuring the physical properties of Weyl semimetals. Yet, potential applications remain relatively sparse. Here, we propose Weyl semimetal nanowires as field-effect transistors, dubbed WEYLFETs. Specifically, applying gradient gate voltage along the nanowire, an electrical field is generated that effecti…
3D Dirac semimetals are an emerging class of materials that possess topological electronic states with a Dirac dispersion in their bulk. In nodal-line Dirac semimetals, the conductance and valence bands connect along a closed path in momentum space, leading to the prediction of pseudospin vortex rings and pseudospin skyrmions. Here, we use Fourier transform scanning tunneling spectroscopy (FT-STS) at 4.5 K to resolve quasiparticle interference (QPI) patterns at single defect centers on the surface of the line nodal semimetal zirconium silicon sulfide (ZrSiS). Our QPI measurements show pseudosp…
Two-dimensional (2D) surface of the topological materials is an attractive channel for the electrical conduction reflecting the linearly-dispersive electronic bands. By applying a reliable systematic thickness t dependent measurement of sheet conductance, here we elucidate the dimensionality of the electrical conduction paths of a Weyl semimetal Co3Sn2S2. Under the ferromagnetic phase, the 2D conduction path clearly emerges in Co3Sn2S2 thin films, indicating a formation of the Fermi arcs projected from Weyl nodes. Comparison between 3D conductivity and 2D conductance provides the effective thi…
Weyl semimetals are materials where electrons behave effectively as a kind of massless relativistic particles known asWeyl fermions. These particles occur in two flavours, or chiralities, and are subject to quantum anomalies, the breaking of a conservation law by quantum fluctuations. For instance, the number of Weyl fermions of each chirality is not independently conserved in parallel electric and magnetic field, a phenomenon known as the chiral anomaly. In addition, an underlying curved spacetime provides a distinct contribution to a chiral imbalance, an effect known as the mixed axial-gravi…
Transition metal dichalcogenides XTe$_{2}$ (X=Mo,W) have been shown to be second-order topological insulators based on first-principles calculations, while topological hinge states have been shown to emerge based on the associated tight-binding model. The model is equivalent to the one constructed from a loop-nodal semimetal by adding mass terms and spin-orbit interactions. We propose to study a chiral-symmetric model obtained from the original Hamiltonian by simplifying it but keeping almost identical band structures and topological hinge states. A merit is that we are able to derive various …
The half-quantized Hall conductance is characteristic of quantum systems with parity anomaly. Here we investigate topological and transport properties of a class of parity anomalous semimetals, in which massive Dirac fermions coexist with massless Dirac fermions in momentum space or real space, and uncovered a distinct bulk-edge correspondence that the half-quantized Hall effect is realized via the bulk massless Dirac fermions while the nontrivial Berry curvature is provided by the massive Dirac fermions. The spatial distribution of the edge current decays away from the boundary in a power law…
We study the hydrodynamic transport of electrons in a Weyl semimetal in a strong magnetic field. Impurity scattering in a Weyl semimetal with two Weyl nodes is strongly anisotropic as a function of the direction of the field and is significantly suppressed if the field is perpendicular to the separation between the nodes in momentum space. This allows for convenient access to the hydrodynamic regime of transport, in which electron scattering is dominated by interactions rather than by impurities. In a strong magnetic field, electrons move predominantly parallel to the direction of the field, a…
Charge-density waves (CDWs) in Weyl semimetals (WSMs) have been shown to induce an exotic axionic insulating phase in which the sliding mode (phason) of the CDW acts as a dynamical axion field, giving rise to a large positive magneto-conductance [Wang et al., Phys. Rev. B 87, 161107(R) (2013); Roy et al., Phys. Rev. B 92, 125141 (2015); J. Gooth et al., Nature 575, 315 (2019)]. In this work, we predict that dynamical strain can induce a bulk orbital magnetization in time-reversal- (TR-) invariant WSMs that are gapped by a CDW. We term this effect the "dynamical piezomagnetic effect" (DPME). Un…
CeBi has an intricate magnetic phase diagram whose fully-polarized state has recently been suggested as a Weyl semimetal, though the role of $f$ states in promoting strong interactions has remained elusive. Here we focus on the less-studied, but also time-reversal symmetry-breaking ferrimagnetic phase of CeBi, where our density functional theory (DFT) calculations predict additional Weyl nodes near the Fermi level $E_\mathrm{F}$. We use spin-polarized scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy to image the surface ferrimagnetic order on the itinerant Bi $p$ states, indicating their orbital…
In insulators, the longitudinal resistivity becomes infinitely large at zero temperature. For classic insulators, the Hall conductivity becomes zero at the same time. However, there are special systems, such as two-dimensional quantum Hall isolators, in which a more complex scenario is observed at high magnetic fields. Here, we report experimental evidence for a quasi-quantized Hall insulator in the quantum limit of the three-dimensional semimetal SrSi2. Our measurements reveal a magnetic field-range, in which the longitudinal resistivity diverges with decreasing temperature, while the Hall co…
Topological phases, especially topological crystalline insulators (TCIs), have been intensively explored observed experimentally in three-dimensional (3D) materials. However, the two-dimensional (2D) films are explored much less than 3D TCI, and even 2D topological insulators. Based on ab initio calculations, here we investigate the electronic and topological properties of 2D PbTe(001) few-layers. The monolayer and trilayer PbTe are both intrinsic 2D TCIs with a large band gap reaching 0.27 eV, indicating a high possibility for room-temperature observation of quantized conductance. The origin …
Transition metal pentatelluride ZrTe5 is a versatile material in condensed-matter physics and has been intensively studied since the 1980s. The most fascinating feature of ZrTe5 is that it is a 3D Dirac semimetal which has linear energy dispersion in all three dimensions in momentum space. Structure-wise, ZrTe5 is a layered material held together by weak interlayer van der Waals force. The combination of its unique band structure and 2D atomic structure provides a fertile ground for more potential exotic physical phenomena in ZrTe5 related to 3D Dirac semimentals. However the physical properti…
