In the heavy-fermion system $Yb_2Pd_2In_{1-x}Sn_x$, the interplay of crystal-field splitting, Kondo effect, and Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida interactions leads to complex chemical-, pressure-, and magnetic-field phase diagrams, still to be explored in full detail. By using a series of techniques, we show that even modest changes of parameters other than temperature are sufficient to induce multiple quantum-critical transitions in this highly susceptible heavy-fermion family. In particular, we show that, above $\sim 10$ kbar, hydrostatic pressure not only induces an antiferromagnetic phase at low temperature, but it likely leads to a reorientation of the Yb magnetic moments and/or the competition among different antiferromagnetic configurations.
One of the most exciting discoveries in strongly correlated systems has been the existence of a superconducting dome on heavy fermions close to the quantum critical point where antiferromagnetic order disappears. It is hard even for the most skeptical not to admit that the excitations which bind the electrons in the Cooper pairs have a magnetic origin. As a system moves away from an antiferromagnetic quantum critical point, (AFQCP) the correlation length of the fluctuations decreases and the system goes into a local quantum critical regime. The attractive interaction mediated by the non-local …
We report a systematic study by 75As nuclear-quadrupole resonance in LaFeAsO1-xFx. The antiferromagnetic spin fluctuation (AFSF) found above the magnetic ordering temperature TN = 58 K for x = 0.03 persists in the regime 0.04 < x < 0.08 where superconductivity sets in. A dome-shaped x-dependence of the superconducting transition temperature Tc is found, with the highest Tc = 27 K at x = 0.06 which is realized under significant AFSF. With increasing x further, the AFSF decreases, and so does Tc. These features resemble closely the cuprates La2-xSrxCuO4. In x = 0.06, the spin-lattice relaxation …
Recent experiments in unconventional superconductors, and in particular iron-based materials, have reported evidence of an antiferromagnetic quantum critical point (AFM-QCP) emerging inside the superconducting dome of the phase diagram. Fluctuations associated with such an AFM-QCP are expected to promote unusual temperature dependencies of thermodynamic quantities. Here, we compute the $T$ dependence of the specific heat $C(T)$ deep inside a fully gapped $s^{+-}$ superconducting state as the AFM-QCP is approached. We find that, at the AFM-QCP, the specific heat $C(T)$ vanishes quadratically wi…
Neutron scattering from high-quality YBCO6.334 single crystals with a T$_c$ of 8.4 K shows that there is no coexistence with long-range antiferromagnetic order at this very low, near-critical doping of $\sim$0.055, in contrast to claims based on local probe techniques. We find that the neutron resonance seen in optimally doped YBCO7 and underdoped YBCO6.5, has undergone large softening and damping. It appears that the overdamped resonance, with a relaxation rate of 2 meV, is coupled to a zero-energy central mode that grows with cooling and eventually saturates with no change at or below T$_c$.…
The effect of doping on the TB model of the CuO planes in the La2CuO4 constructed in previous works is investigated. Firstly, it is noted that the model employed constitutes a generalization of the Hubbard one for the same system. Thus, the former predictions of the insulator gap, antiferromagnetic character and the existence of a paramagnetic-pseudogap state, become natural ones to be expected from this more general picture. The effect of hole doping on the antiferromagnetic-insulator state (AFI) and the paramagnetic-pseudogap one, is investigated. The results predict a quantum phase transiti…
We use heat capacity measurements as a function of field rotation to identify the nodal gap structure of CeIrIn5 at pressures to 2.05 GPa, deep inside its superconducting dome. A four-fold oscillation in the heat capacity at 0.3 K is observed for all pressures but with its sign reversed between 1.50 and 0.90 GPa. On the basis of recent theoretical models for the field-angle dependent specific heat, all data, including the sign reversal, imply a d{x^2-y^2} order parameter with nodes along [110], which constrains theoretical models of the pairing mechanism in CeIrIn5.

In quasi-two dimensional Ce(Ir,Rh)In$_5$ system, it has been suggested that the phase diagram contains two distinct domes with different heavy fermion superconducting states. We here report the systematic pressure dependence of the electron transport properties in the normal state of CeRh$_{0.2}$Ir$_{0.8}$In$_{5}$ and CeIrIn$_{5}$, which locates in first and second superconducting dome, respectively. We observed non-Fermi liquid behavior at low temperatures in both compounds, including non-quadratic $T-$dependence of the resistivity, large enhancement of the Hall coefficient, and the violation…
We study the topological properties of an antiferromagnetic phase with reflection symmetry in three-dimensional heavy-fermion systems. We here propose a reflection-symmetric topological state in the three-dimensional antiferromagnetic phase and demonstrate how the paramagnetic phase changes into the antiferromagnetic topological phase of f -electron materials such as SmB6.
The remarkable universality of the cuprate $T_c$ dome suggests a very fundamental unifying principle. Moreover, the superconducting gap is known to persist above $T_c$ in the pseudogap phase of all cuprates. So, contrary to BCS, the gap cannot be the order parameter of the transition. In this work, we show that both the $T_c$-dome and the pseudogap line $T^*(p)$ arise from a unique and identifiable principle: the interaction of localized `pairons' on an antiferromagnetic square lattice. The topological constraints on such preformed pairons give rise to both the $T_c$ dome and the pairing energ…
We report spin-split Landau levels of quasi-two-dimensional Dirac fermions in a layered antiferromagnet EuMnBi$_2$, as revealed by interlayer resistivity measurements in a tilted magnetic field up to $\sim$35 T. The amplitude of Shubnikov-de Haas (SdH) oscillation in interlayer resistivity is strongly modulated by changing the tilt angle of the field, i.e., the Zeeman-to-cyclotron energy ratio. The effective $g$ factor estimated from the tilt angle, where the SdH oscillation exhibits a phase inversion, differs by approximately 50% between two antiferromagnetic phases. This observation signifie…

The interpretation of the magnetic phase diagrams of strongly correlated electron systems remains controversial. In particular, the physics of quantum phase transitions, which occur at zero temperature, is still enigmatic. Heavy-fermion compounds aretextbook examples of quantum criticality, as doping, or the application of pressure or a magnetic field can lead to a quantum phase transition between a magnetically ordered state and a paramagnetic regime. A central question concerns the microscopic nature of the critical quantum fluctuations. Are they antiferromagnetic or of local origin? Here we…
Quasi-two dimensional CeIrIn5 contains two distinct domes with different heavy fermion superconducting states in its phase diagram. Here we pinned down the superconducting gap structure of CeIrIn5 in the second dome, located away from the antiferromagnetic quantum critical point, by the thermal transport measurements in magnetic fields rotated relative to the crystal axes. Clear fourfold oscillation was observed when the field is rotated within the ab-plane, while no oscillation was observed within the bc-plane. In sharp contrast to previous reports, our results are most consistent with d_{x^2…
We study the quantum phase transition from an antiferromagnetic metal to a heavy fermion metal in the Kondo lattice model. Based on the strong coupling approach we {\it first} diagonalize the Kondo coupling term. Since this strong coupling approach makes the resulting Kondo term {\it relevant}, the Kondo hybridization persists even in the antiferromagnetic metal, indicating that fluctuations of Kondo singlets are not critical in the phase transition. We find that the quantum transition in our strong coupling approach results from {\it softening of antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations of localiz…
We find the dynamical exponent $z = 3$ antiferromagnetic (AF) quantum critical point (QCP) in the heavy fermion quantum transition beyond the standard framework of the Hertz-Moriya-Millis theory with $z = 2$. Based on the U(1) slave-fermion representation of the Anderson lattice model, we show the continuous transition from an antiferromagnetic metal to a heavy fermion Fermi liquid, where the heavy fermion phase consists of two fluids, differentiated from the slave-boson theory. Thermodynamics and transport of the $z = 3$ AF QCP are shown to be consistent with the well known non-Fermi liquid p…
We apply Dynamical Mean-Field Theory to strongly interacting fermions in an inhomogeneous environment. With the help of this Real-Space Dynamical Mean-Field Theory (R-DMFT) we investigate antiferromagnetic states of repulsively interacting fermions with spin 1/2 in a harmonic potential. Within R-DMFT, antiferromagnetic order is found to be stable in spatial regions with total particle density close to one, but persists also in parts of the system where the local density significantly deviates from half filling. In systems with spin imbalance, we find that antiferromagnetism is gradually suppre…
We consider a model of spinful fermions on the triangular lattice which exhibits a C=2 Chern insulator (CI) phase with a quantized anomalous Hall effect, sandwiched between two normal insulator (NI) phases. The first NI-CI quantum phase transition is driven by simultaneous mass inversion of a pair of Dirac fermions, with short range interactions being perturbatively irrelevant. The second CI-NI transition is driven by a single quadratic band touching point protected by momentum space topology and C_6 lattice symmetry. A one-loop renormalization group analysis shows that short range interaction…
We reinvestigate a doped antiferromagnetic Mott insulator based on the slave-fermion approach of the t-J model, where antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations and doped holes are described by bosonic spinons and fermionic holons, respectively. Earlier studies have shown that an effective field theory for the doped antiferromagnetic Mott insulator is given by a non-relativistic fermion (holon) U(1) gauge theory for charge dynamics and a relativistic boson (spinon) U(1) gauge theory for spin dynamics, thus allowing an anomalous metallic phase where bosonic spinons are gapped away from an antiferromag…
Two-dimensional Dirac fermions are subjected to two types of interactions, namely the long-range Coulomb interaction and the short-range on-site interaction. The former induces excitonic pairing if its strength $α$ is larger than some critical value $α_c$, whereas the latter drives an antiferromagnetic Mott transition when its strength $U$ exceeds a threshold $U_c$. Here, we study the impacts of the interplay of these two interactions on excitonic pairing with the Dyson-Schwinger equation approach. We find that the critical value $α_c$ is increased by weak short-range interaction. As $U$ incre…
In terms of spinless fermions via the Jordan-Wigner transformation along a snake-like path and spin waves modified so as to restore the sublattice symmetry, we investigate static and dynamic properties of two-leg antiferromagnetic Heisenberg ladders. The specific heat is finely reproduced by the spinless fermions, whereas the magnetic susceptibility is well described by the modified spin waves. The nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate is discussed in detail with particular emphasis on its novel field dependence.
To check the reliability of the Majorana representation of quantum spin systems, we use it to compute the ground state energy of an antiferromagnetic spin 1/2 chain to one loop order. We find a very small one loop correction of the mean field energy and a discrepancy of >100% compared to the Bethe Ansatz result. We conclude that a careful handling of the gauge degrees of freedom of this representation is crucial to get correct results.
A fundamental issue concerning iron-based superconductivity is the roles of electronic nematicity and magnetism in realising high transition temperature ($T_{\rm c}$). To address this issue, FeSe is a key material, as it exhibits a unique pressure phase diagram involving nonmagnetic nematic and pressure-induced antiferromagnetic ordered phases. However, as these two phases in FeSe overlap with each other, the effects of two orders on superconductivity remain perplexing. Here we construct the three-dimensional electronic phase diagram, temperature ($T$) against pressure ($P$) and isovalent S-su…
Employing the Jordan-Wigner transformation on a unique path and then making a mean-field treatment of the fermionic Hamiltonian, we semiquantitatively describe the spin-gap states of Heisenberg ladders in a field. The appearance of magnetization plateaux is clarified as a function of the number of legs.
The spin-fermion model has long been used to describe the quantum-critical behavior of 2d electron systems near an antiferromagnetic (AFM) instability. Recently, the standard procedure to integrate out the fermions to obtain an effective action for spin waves has been questioned in the clean case. We show that in the presence of disorder, the single fermion loops display two crossover scales: upon lowering the energy, the singularities of the clean fermionic loops are first cut off, but below a second scale new singularities arise that lead again to marginal scaling. In addition, impurity line…
Anticipating realization of interacting fermions in an optical lattice with a large gauge field, we consider phase transitions and loop currents in a two-dimensional S=1/2 fermionic-Hubbard model with $π$/2-staggered flux at half filling. We use a variational Monte Carlo method, which is reliable even for strong correlations. As a trial wave function, a coexistent state of antifferomagnetic and staggered-flux orders is studied. In a strongly correlated regime, the ground state becomes an insulating coexistent state with loop currents. By comparing fermions with bosons, we discuss an important …
We report infrared studies of AFe$_{2}$As$_{2}$ (A = Ba, Sr), two representative parent compounds of iron-arsenide superconductors, at magnetic fields (B) up to 17.5 T. Optical transitions between Landau levels (LLs) were observed in the antiferromagnetic states of these two parent compounds. Our observation of a $\sqrt{B}$ dependence of the LL transition energies, the zero-energy intercepts at B = 0 T under the linear extrapolations of the transition energies and the energy ratio ($\sim$ 2.4) between the observed LL transitions, combined with the linear band dispersions in two-dimensional (2D…
FeSn is a room-temperature antiferromagnet expected to host Dirac fermions in its electronic structure. The interplay of magnetic degree of freedom and the Dirac fermions makes FeSn an attractive platform for spintronics and electronic devices. While stabilization of thin film FeSn is needed for the development of such devices, there exist no previous report of epitaxial growth of single crystalline FeSn. Here we report the realization of epitaxial thin films of FeSn (001) grown by molecular beam epitaxy on single crystal SrTiO$_{3}$ (111) substrates. By combining X-ray diffraction, electrical…
Recent inelastic neutron scattering experiments in CeIn3 and CePd2Si2 single crystals, measured spin wave excitations at low temperatures. These two heavy fermion compounds exhibit antiferromagnetic long-range order, but a strong competition between the Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida(RKKY) interaction and Kondo effect is evidenced by their nearly equal Neel and Kondo temperatures. Our aim is to show how magnons such as measured in the antiferromagnetic phase of these Ce compounds, can be described with a microscopic Heisenberg-Kondo model as introduced by J.R.Iglesias, C.Lacroix and B.Coqblin, …
We report the pressure-dependent optical conductivity spectra of a heavy fermion (HF) compound CeIn3 below the Neel temperature of 10 K to investigate the existence of the HF state in the antiferromagnetic (AFM) phase. The peak due to the interband transition in the hybridization gap between the conduction band and nearly localized 4f states (c-f hybridization) appears at the photon energy of about 20 meV not only in the HF regime but also in the AFM regime. Both the energy and intensity of the c-f hybridization peak continuously increase with the application of pressure from the AFM to the HF…
Single crystals of Ce2PdIn8 were studied by means of magnetic susceptibility, electrical resistivity and specific heat measurements. The compound was found to be a heavy fermion clean-limit superconductor with Tc = 0.68 K. Most remarkably, the superconductivity in this system emerges out of the antiferromagnetic state that sets in at TN = 10 K, and both cooperative phenomena coexist in a bulk at ambient pressure conditions.
Recent inelastic neutron scattering experiments in CeIn$_{3}$ and CePd$_{2}$Si$_{2}$ single crystals measured spin wave excitations at low temperatures. These two heavy fermion compounds exhibit antiferromagnetic long-range order, but a strong competition between the Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida(RKKY) interaction and Kondo effect is evidenced by their nearly equal Néel and Kondo temperatures. Our aim is to show how magnons such as measured in the antiferromagnetic phase of these Ce compounds, can be described with a microscopic Heisenberg-Kondo model introduced by J.R.Iglesias, C.Lacroix and …
The dynamical spin susceptibility is studied in the magnetically-disordered phase of heavy-Fermion systems near the antiferromagnetic quantum phase transition. In the framework of the $S=1/2$ Kondo lattice model, we introduce a perturbative expansion treating the spin and Kondo-like degrees of freedom on an equal footing. The dynamical spin susceptibility displays a two-component behaviour in agreement with the inelastic neutron scattering (INS) experiments performed in $CeCu_{6}$, $Ce_{1-x}La_{x}Ru_{2}Si_{2}$ and $UPt_{3}$: a quasielastic q-independent peak as in a Fermi liquid theory, and a …
We present a theory for the large suppression of the superfluid-density, $ρ_s$, in BaFe$_2$(As$_{1-x}$P$_x$)$_2$ in the vicinity of a putative spin-density wave quantum critical point at a P-doping, $x=x_{c}$. We argue that the transition becomes weakly first-order in the vicinity of $x_{c}$, and disorder induces puddles of superconducting and antiferromagnetic regions at short length-scales; thus the system becomes an electronic micro-emulsion. We propose that frustrated Josephson couplings between the superconducting grains suppress $ρ_s$. In addition, the presence of `normal' quasiparticles…
Recently, it has become possible to tune optical lattices continuously between square and triangular geometries. We compute thermodynamics and spin correlations in the corresponding Hubbard model using determinant quantum Monte Carlo and show that the frustration effects induced by the variable hopping terms can be clearly separated from concomitant bandwidth changes by a proper rescaling of the interaction. An enhancement of the double occupancy by geometric frustration signals the destruction of nontrivial antiferromagnetic correlations at weak coupling and entropy $s\lesssim \ln(2)$ (and re…
We present a study of the critical phenomena around the quantum critical point in heavy-fermion systems. In the framework of the S=1/2 Kondo lattice model, we introduce an extended decoupling scheme of the Kondo interaction which allows one to treat the spin fluctuations and the Kondo effect on an equal footing. The calculations, developed in a self-consistent one-loop approximation, lead to the formation of a damped collective mode with a dynamic exponent z=2 in the case of an antiferromagnetic instability. The system displays a quantum-classical crossover at finite temperature depending how …
In our previous work, we identify the Sublattice-Pairing State (SPS) in Schwinger-fermion representation as the spin liquid phase discovered in recent numerical study on a honeycomb lattice. In this paper, we show that SPS is identical to the zero-flux $Z_2$ spin liquid in Schwinger-boson representation found by Wang\cite{Wang2010} by an explicit duality transformation. SPS is connected to an \emph{unusual} antiferromagnetic ordered phase, which we term as chiral-antiferromagnetic (CAF) phase, by an O(4) critical point. CAF phase breaks the SU(2) spin rotation symmetry completely and has three…
Some of the high Tc iron pnictides contain magnetic rare-earth elements, raising the question of how the existence and tunability of a d-electron antiferromagnetic order influences the heavy fermion behavior of the f-moments. With CeOFeP and CeOFeAs in mind as prototypes, we derive an extended Anderson lattice model appropriate for these quaternary systems. We show that the Kondo screening of the f-moments are efficiently suppressed by the d-electron ordering. We also argue that, inside the d-electron ordered state (as in CeOFeAs), the f-moments provide a rare realization of a quantum frustrat…
We present a functional renormalization group flow for many-fermion lattice models into phases with broken spin-rotational symmetry. The flow is expressed purely in terms of fermionic vertex functions. The symmetry breaking is seeded by a small initial anomalous self-energy which grows at the transition scale and which prevents a runaway-flow at nonzero scales. Focusing on the case of commensurate antiferromagnetism we discuss how the interaction vertex can be parametrized efficiently. For reduced models with long-range bare interactions we show the results of standard mean-field theory are re…
We present results of high-resolution, low-temperature measurements of the Hall coefficient, thermopower, and specific heat on stoichiometric YbRh2Si2. They support earlier conclusions of an electronic (Kondo-breakdown) quantum critical point concurring with a field induced antiferromagnetic one. We also discuss the detachment of the two instabilities under chemical pressure. Volume compression/expansion (via substituting Rh by Co/Ir) results in a stabilization/weakening of magnetic order. Moderate Ir substitution leads to a non-Fermi-liquid phase, in which the magnetic moments are neither ord…
We present an efficient diagrammatic method to describe nonlocal correlation effects in lattice fermion Hubbard-like models, which is based on a change of variables in the Grassmann path integrals. The new fermions are dual to the original ones and correspond to weakly interacting quasiparticles in the case of strong local correlations in the Hubbard model. The method starts with dynamical mean-field theory as a zeroth-order approximation and includes non-local effects in a perturbative way. In contrast to cluster approaches, this method utilizes an exact transition to a dual set of variables.…
We propose a microscopic physical mechanism that stabilizes coexistence of the Kondo effect and antiferromagnetism in heavy-fermion systems. We consider a two-dimensional quantum Kondo-Heisenberg lattice model and show that long-range electron hopping leads to a robust antiferromagnetic Kondo state. By using a modified slave-boson mean-field approach we analyze the stability of the heavy antiferromagnetic phase across a range or parameters, and discuss transitions between different phases. We also address connection to experiments on heavy fermion compounds.
Novel electronic phenomena frequently form in heavy fermions as a consequence of the mutual nature of localization and itineracy of f electrons. On the magnetically ordered side of the heavy fermion phase diagram, f moments are expected to be localized and decoupled from the Fermi surface. It remains ambiguous whether a Kondo lattice can develop inside the magnetically ordered phase. Using spectroscopic imaging with the scanning tunneling microscope, complemented by neutron scattering, x ray absorption spectroscopy, and dynamical mean field theory, we probe the electronic states in the antifer…
We use determinant quantum Monte Carlo (DQMC) simulations to study the role of electron-electron interactions on three-dimensional (3D) Dirac fermions based on the $π$-flux model on a cubic lattice. We show that the Hubbard interaction drives the 3D Dirac semimetal to an antiferromagnetic (AF) insulator only above a finite critical interaction strength and the long-ranged AF order persists up to a finite temperature. We evaluate the critical interaction strength and temperatures using finite-size scaling of the spin structure factor. The critical behaviors are consistent with the (3+1)d Gross-…
We have obtained mid-infrared optical absorption spectra of the S=1/2 quasi one-dimensional CuO using polarized transmission measurement and interpreted the spectra in terms of phonon assisted magnetic excitations. When the electric field is parallel to the main antiferromagnetic direction a Delta shaped peak is observed with the maximum at 0.23eV which is attributed to spinons along Cu-O chains. At low temperatures in the antiferromagnetic phase another peak appears at 0.16eV which is attributed to two-magnon absorption but the spinon peak remains. This behavior is interpreted as due to a dim…
In quantum spin systems, singlet phases often develop in the vicinity of an antiferromagnetic order. Typical settings for such problems arise when itinerant fermions are also present. In this work, we develop a theoretical framework for addressing such competing orders in an itinerant system, described by Dirac fermions strongly coupled to an O(3) nonlinear sigma model. We focus on two spatial dimensions, where upon disordering the antiferromagnetic order by quantum fluctuations the singular tunneling events also known as (anti)hedgehogs can nucleate competing singlet orders in the paramagneti…
We study the onset of spin-density wave order in itinerant electron systems via a two-dimensional lattice model amenable to numerically exact, sign-problem-free determinantal quantum Monte Carlo simulations. The finite-temperature phase diagram of the model reveals a dome-shaped $d$-wave superconducting phase near the magnetic quantum phase transition. Above the critical superconducting temperature, we observe an extended fluctuation regime, which manifests itself in the opening of a gap in the electronic density of states and an enhanced diamagnetic response. While charge density wave fluctua…
We present the results of our comprehensive investigation on the antiferromagnetic heavy-fermion superconductor Ce$_3$PtIn$_{11}$ carried out by means of electrical transport, heat capacity and ac magnetic susceptibility measurements, performed on single-crystalline specimens down to 50 mK in external magnetic fields up to 9~T. Our experimental results elucidate a complex magnetic field -- temperature phase diagram which contains both first- and second-order field-induced magnetic transitions and highlights the emergence of field stabilized phases. Remarkably, a prominent metamagnetic transiti…
We verify signatures of antiferromagnetic (AF) correlations in the double occupancy D [Gorelik et al., PRL 105, 065301 (2010)] and study their dimensional dependence using direct quantum Monte Carlo in dimensions d=2,3 and Bethe Ansatz in d=1. We find quantitative agreement with dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT) in the cubic case and qualitative agreement down to d=1. As a function of entropy s=S/(N k_B), D is nearly universal with respect to d; the minimum in D(s) approaches s=log(2) at strong coupling, as predicted by DMFT. Long-range order appears hardly relevant for the current search of …
An overview on recent efforts in point-contact (PC) spectroscopy of title superconductors is given. Distinct phonon features and crystalline-electric-field effects are observed in PC spectra of HoNi2B2C. Results of study of superconducting (SC) gap and excess current versus temperature and magnetic field reflecting specific multi-band electronic structure in MgB2 are presented. The nature of the extremely nonlinear I(V) curves in the antiferromagnetic (AF) and SC state are elucidated for UPd2Al3 break-junctions and MgCNi3 point contacts.
We calculate the rate of creation of double occupancies in a 3D Fermionic Mott insulator near half-filling by modulation of optical lattice potential. At high temperatures, incoherent holes lead to a broad response peaked at the Hubbard repulsion $U$. At low temperatures, antiferromagnetic order leads to a coherent peak for the hole along with broad features representing spin wave shake-off processes. This is manifested in the doublon creation rate as a sharp absorption edge and oscillations as a function of modulating frequency. Thus, modulation spectroscopy can be used as a probe of antiferr…
The Nernst effect was measured in the electron-doped cuprate superconductor Pr2-xCexCuO4 (PCCO) at four concentrations, from underdoped (x=0.13) to overdoped (x=0.17), for a wide range of temperatures above the critical temperature Tc. A magnetic field H up to 15 T was used to reliably access the normal-state quasiparticle contribution to the Nernst signal, Nqp, which is subtracted from the total signal, N, to obtain the superconducting contribution, Nsc. As a function of H, Nsc peaks at a field H* whose temperature dependence obeys Hc2* ln(T/Tc), as it does in a conventional superconductor li…
The superconducting gap structure of heavy fermion UPd_2Al_3, in which unconventional superconductivity coexists with antiferromagnetic (AF) order with atomic size local moments, was investigated by the thermal conductivity measurements in a magnetic field rotating in various directions relative to the crystal axes. The results provide strong evidence that the gap function Δ(k) has a single line node orthogonal to the c-axis located at the AF Brillouin zone boundary, while Δ(k) is isotropic within the basal plane. The determined nodal structure is compatible with the resonance peak in the dyna…
We report a 29Si-NMR study on the pressure-induced superconductivity (SC) in an antiferromagnetic (AFM) heavy-fermion compound CeIrSi3 without inversion symmetry. In the SC state at P=2.7-2.8 GPa, the temperature dependence of the nuclear-spin lattice relaxation rate 1/T_1 below Tc exhibits a T^3 behavior without any coherence peak just below Tc, revealing the presence of line nodes in the SC gap. In the normal state, 1/T_1 follows a \sqrt{T}-like behavior, suggesting that the SC emerges under the non-Fermi liquid state dominated by AFM spin fluctuations enhanced around quantum critical point …
Quantum criticality describes the collective fluctuations of matter undergoing a second-order phase transition at zero temperature. It is being discussed in a number of strongly correlated electron systems. A prototype case occurs in the heavy fermion metals, in which antiferromagnetic quantum critical points have been explicitly observed. Here, I address two types of antiferromagnetic quantum critical points. In addition to the standard description based on the fluctuations of the antiferromagnetic order, a local quantum critical point is also considered. It contains inherently quantum modes …
Using the determinant quantum Monte Carlo method, we investigate the antiferromagnetic phase transition that is induced by the Zeeman field in a disordered interacting two-dimensional Dirac fermion system. At a fixed interaction strength $U$, the antiferromagnetic correlation is enhanced as the magnetic filed increases, and when the magnetic field is larger than a $B_{c}(U)$, the antiferromagnetic correlation shall be suppressed by the increased magnetic field. The impact of Zeeman field $B$, Coulomb repulsion $U$ and disorder $Δ$ is not isolated. The intensity of magnetic field effect on the …
We report the results of our detailed magnetotransport studies on single crystals of the antiferromagnetic heavy-fermion superconductor Ce$_3$PdIn$_{11}$. Electrical resistivity measurements, carried out in different magnetic field orientations with respect to the crystallographic axes, were mainly aimed to amass further insight about the magnetically ordered state. The results manifest a clear metamagnetic transitions in the ordered phase when the applied field is parallel to the tetragonal $c$ axis, while no similar features are seen for the transverse direction, i.e., with the field confine…
Extensive Cu-NMR studies on multilayered high-Tc cuprates have deduced the following results;(1) Antiferromagnetic (AFM) moment M_{AFM} is decreased with doping, regardless of the number of CuO_2 layers n, and collapses around a carrier density N_h = 0.17. (2) The AFM ordering temperature is enhanced as the out-of-plane coupling J_{out} increases with increasing n. (3) The in-plane superexchange J_{in} is invariant with doping, but is even increased. (4) The dome shape of T_c from the underdoped to the overdoped regime with a maximum T_c at N_h = 0.22 does not depend on n, but its maximum valu…
