Reply to "Comment on <Emergence of a superconducting state from an antiferromagnetic phase in single crystals of the heavy fermion compound Ce2PdIn8> by Uhlirova et al."
This is a reply to the comment by O. Narikiyo (cond-mat/0012505) on our paper J. Phys. Soc. Jpn. {\bf 68}, (1999) 1614. We point out mistakes about his arguments, and we show that our analysis is compatible with the established Fermi liquid theory, so the obtained result is justified.
In a recent Letter Ando et al (cond-mat/9905071) discovered an anomalous magnetoresistance(MR) in hole doped antiferromagnetic YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+x}$, which they attributed to charged stripes, i.e., to segregation of holes into lines. In this Comment we show that the experiments, albeit being interesting, do not prove the existence of stripes. In our view the anomalous behavior is due to an (a,b) plane anisotropy of the resistivity in the bulk and to a magnetic field dependent antiferromagnetic (AF) domain structure. It is unlikely that domain walls are charged stripes.
Fak, van Dijk and Wills (FDW) question our interpretation of elastic neutron-scattering experiments in the antiferromagnetic phase of UPt_3. They state that our analysis is incorrect because we average over magnetic structures that are disallowed by symmetry. We disagree with FDW and reply to their criticism. FDW also point out that we have mistaken the magnetic field direction in the experiment reported by N. H. van Dijk et al. [Phys. Rev. B 58, 3186 (1998)]. We correct this error and note that our previous conclusion is also valid for the correct field orientation.
Moreno and Sauls [Phys. Rev. B 63, 024419 (2000)] have recently tried to reanalyze earlier neutron scattering studies of the antiferromagnetic order in UPt3 with a magnetic field applied in the basal plane. In their calculation of the magnetic Bragg peak intensities, they perform an average over different magnetic structures belonging to distinct symmetry representations. This is incorrect. In addition, they have mistaken the magnetic field direction in one of the experiments, hence invalidating their conclusions concerning the experimental results.
Single crystals of Ce2PdIn8 were studied by means of magnetic susceptibility, electrical resistivity and specific heat measurements. The compound was found to be a heavy fermion clean-limit superconductor with Tc = 0.68 K. Most remarkably, the superconductivity in this system emerges out of the antiferromagnetic state that sets in at TN = 10 K, and both cooperative phenomena coexist in a bulk at ambient pressure conditions.
We present a systematic investigation of the electrical, structural, and antiferromagnetic properties for the series of Ba(Fe$_{1-x-y}$Co$_{x}$Rh$_{y}$)$_{2}$As$_{2}$ compounds with fixed $x \approx$ 0.027 and $ 0 \leq y \leq 0.035$. We compare our results for the Co-Rh doped Ba(Fe$_{1-x-y}$Co$_{x}$Rh$_{y}$)$_{2}$As$_{2}$ compounds with the Co doped Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$)$_{2}$As$_{2}$ compounds. We demonstrate that the electrical, structural, antiferromangetic, and superconducting properties of the Co-Rh doped compounds are similar to the properties of the Co doped compounds. We find that the…
A new ternary platinum phosphide CePt$_{3}$P was synthesized and characterized by means of magnetic, thermodynamic and transport measurements. The compound crystallizes in an antiperovskite tetragonal structure similar to that in the canonical family of platinum-based superconductors $A$Pt$_{3}$P ($A$ = Sr, Ca, La) and closely related to the noncentrosymmetric heavy fermion superconductor CePt$_{3}$Si. In contrast to all the superconducting counterparts, however, no superconductivity is observed in CePt$_{3}$P down to 0.5 K. Instead, CePt$_{3}$P displays a coexistence of antiferromagnetic orde…
Ternary iron arsenide EuFe$_2$As$_2$ with ThCr$_2$Si$_2$-type structure has been studied by magnetic susceptibility, resistivity, thermopower, Hall and specific heat measurements. The compound undergoes two magnetic phase transitions at about 200 K and 20 K, respectively. The former was found to be accompanied with a slight drop in magnetic susceptibility (after subtracting the Curie-Weiss paramagnetic contribution), a rapid decrease in resistivity, a large jump in thermopower and a sharp peak in specific heat with decreasing temperature, all of which point to a spin-density-wave-like antiferr…
This comment clarifies the mixed definition of the cerium valence in the article entitled: Quantitative study of the $f$ occupation in CeMIn5 and other cerium compounds with hard X-rays, published in Journal of Electron Spectroscopy and Related Phenomena http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0368204816300123 and available on arXiv:1601.03270. Indeed, it is unclear wether electrons belonging on hybridized f-states are part or not of the valence. When one tries to simulate the system, an Anderson impurity model only includes valence bands electrons and localized 4-f states. Therefore…
Based on the five-orbital model, we derive the reduced impurity scattering rate $g=zγ/2πT_{c0}$ in Sm(Fe$_{1-x}$Ru$_{x}$)AsO$_{0.85}$F$_{0.15}$ from the residual resistivity. At $x=0$, the transition temperature is $T_{c0}=50$ K. For $0.05<x<0.36$ ($0.84>T_{c}/T_{c0}>0.3$) the obtained value of $g$ ranges from 1.5 to 2.9, which suggests that the $s_\pm$-wave state cannot survive. We point out that the magnetoresistance frequently gives an underestimated value of $g$ in correlated electron systems.
We report an inelastic neutron scattering study of the spin waves of the one-dimensional antiferromagnetic spin ladder compound RbFe$_2$Se$_3$. The results reveal that the products, $SJ$'s, of the spin $S$ and the magnetic exchange interactions $J$'s along the antiferromagnetic (leg) direction and the ferromagnetic (rung) direction are comparable with those for the stripe ordered phase of the parent compounds of the iron-based superconductors. The universality of the $SJ$'s implies nearly universal spin wave dynamics and the irrelevance of the fermiology for the existence of the stripe antifer…
The relationship between spin, electron, and crystal structure has been one of the foremost issues in understanding the superconducting mechanism since the discovery of iron-based high temperature superconductors. Here, we report Mössbauer and first-principles calculations studies of the parent compound SrFeAsF with the largest temperature gap ($\sim$50\,K) between the structural and antiferromagnetic (AFM) transitions. Our results reveal that the structural transition has little effect on the electronic structure of the compound SrFeAsF while the development of the AFM order induces a redistr…
We report a single-crystal study on the magnetism of the rare-earth compound PrTiNbO$_6$ that experimentally realizes the zigzag pseudospin-$\frac{1}{2}$ quantum antiferromagnetic chain model. Random crystal electric field caused by the site mixing between non-magnetic Ti$^{4+}$ and Nb$^{5+}$, results in the non-Kramers ground state quasi-doublet of Pr$^{3+}$ with the effective pseudospin-$\frac{1}{2}$ Ising moment. Despite the antiferromagnetic intersite coupling of about 4 K, no magnetic freezing is detected down to 0.1 K, whilst the system approaches its ground state with almost zero residu…
In their comment Calandra \textit{et al} \cite{Calandra}, assert two points: (1) the estimate of charge transfer from Li to graphene layers in LiC$_6$ in our letter \cite{Pan2011c} is incorrect because of the three dimensional (3D) character of the electronic structure in bulk LiC$_6$; (2) our main claim that the superconductivity in graphite intercalation compounds (GICs) is graphene-sheet-driven is therefore invalid.
We revisit the magnetic properties of the antiferromagnetic Kondo lattice CeNiAsO by $^{75}$As nuclear magnetic resonance measurements. Our results confirm two successive antiferromagnetic transitions of Ce moments at $T_{N1}=9.0(3)$ K and $T_{N2}=7.0(3)$ K. Incommensurate and commensurate antiferromagnetic orders are suggested for $T_{N2}<T<T_{N1}$ and $T<T_{N2}$ respectively, consistent with previous neutron and muon experiments. A Knight shift anomaly, characterized by the failure of $K(T)-χ(T)$ scaling, is observed below $T^*\sim15$ K, which gives a measure of the onset of coherent $c-f$ c…
Taking the spin-fermion model as the starting point for describing the cuprate superconductors, we obtain an effective nonlinear sigma-field hamiltonian, which takes into account the effect of doping in the system. We obtain an expression for the spin-wave velocity as a function of the chemical potential. For appropriate values of the parameters we determine the antiferromagnetic phase diagram for the YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+x}$ compound as a function of the dopant concentration in good agreement with the experimental data. Furthermore, our approach provides a unified description for the phase diag…
We report on magnetization, specific heat and resistivity experiments on single crystals of the novel heavy Fermion compound Ce$_3$PdIn$_{11}$. At ambient pressure the compound exhibits two successive transitions at T$_{1}$ = 1.63 K and T$_{\mathrm {N}}$ = 1.49 K into incommensurate and commensurate local moment antiferromagnetic states, respectively, before becoming superconducting below T$_{\mathrm {c}}$ = 0.42 K. The large values of dB$_{\mathrm {c2}}$/dT and B$_{\mathrm {c2}}$ = 2.8 T imply that heavy quasiparticles form the Cooper pairs. Thus, Ce$_{3}$PdIn$_{11}$ is the first ambient pres…
We present a systematic ^{115}In NQR study on the heavy fermion compounds CeRh_{1-x}Ir_xIn_5 (x=0.25, 0.35, 0.45, 0.5, 0.55 and 0.75). The results provide strong evidence for the microscopic coexistence of antiferromagnetic (AF) order and superconductivity (SC) in the range of 0.35 \leq x \leq 0.55. Specifically, for x=0.5, T_N is observed at 3 K with a subsequent onset of superconductivity at T_c=0.9 K. T_c reaches a maximum (0.94 K) at x=0.45 where T_N is found to be the highest (4.0 K). Detailed analysis of the measured spectra indicate that the same electrons participate in both SC and AF …
We performed optical studies on CaFeAsF single crystals, a parent compound of the 1111-type iron-based superconductors that undergoes a structural phase transition from tetragonal to orthorhombic at $T_s$ = 121 K and a magnetic one to a spin density wave (SDW) state at $T_N$ = 110 K. In the low temperature optical conductivity spectrum, after the subtraction of a narrow Drude peak, we observe a pronounced singularity around 300 cm$^{-1}$ that separates two regions of quasilinear conductivity. We outline that these characteristic absorption features are signatures of Dirac fermions, similar to …
Unconventional superconductivity frequently emerges as the transition temperature of a magnetic phase, typically antiferromagnetic, is suppressed continuously toward zero temperature. Here, we report contrary behavior in pressurized CeRhGe3, a non-centrosymmetric heavy fermion compound. We find that its pressure-tuned antiferromagnetic transition temperature (TN) appears to avoid a continuous decrease to zero temperature by terminating abruptly above a dome of pressure-induced superconductivity. Near 21.5 GPa, evidence for TN suddenly vanishes, the electrical resistance becomes linear in tempe…
Low temperature ac magnetic susceptibility measurements of the coexistent antiferromagnetic superconductor YbPd2Sn have been made in hydrostatic pressures < 74 kbar in moissanite anvil cells. The superconducting transition temperature is forced to T(SC) = 0 K at a pressure of 58 kbar. The initial suppression of the superconducting transition temperature is corroborated by lower hydrostatic pressure (p < 16 kbar) four point resisitivity measurements, made in a piston cylinder pressure cell. At ambient pressure, in a modest magnetic field of ~ 500 G, this compound displays reentrant superconduct…
The compound BaMn2As2 with the tetragonal ThCr2Si2 structure is a local-moment antiferromagnetic insulator with a Neel temperature TN = 625 K and a large ordered moment mu = 3.9 mu_B/Mn. We demonstrate that this compound can be driven metallic by partial substitution of Ba by K, while retaining the same crystal and antiferromagnetic structures together with nearly the same high TN and large mu. Ba_{1-x}K_xMn2As2 is thus the first metallic ThCr2Si2-type MAs-based system containing local 3d transition metal M magnetic moments, with consequences for the ongoing debate about the local moment versu…
A new compound with a quasi-two-dimensional array of FeSe3O tetrahedra and an orthorombic structure, namely BaFe2Se2O, has been successfully fabricated. Experimental results show that this compound is an insulator and has an antiferromagnetic (AF) transition at 240 K. Band structure calculation reveals the narrowing of Fe 3d bands near the Fermi energy, which leads to the localization of magnetism and the Mott insulating behavior. The large distances between the Fe atoms perhaps are responsible for the characters. Linear response calculation further indicates a strong in-plane AF exchange $J$,…
We present the results of elastic and inelastic neutron scattering measurements on non-superconducting Ba(Fe${_{0.957}}$Cu${_{0.043}}$)${_2}$As${_2}$, a composition close to a quantum critical point between AFM ordered and paramagnetic phases. By comparing these results with the spin fluctuations in the low Cu composition as well as the parent compound BaFe$_2$As$_2$ and superconducting Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Ni$_x$)$_2$As$_2$ compounds, we demonstrate that paramagnon-like spin fluctuations are evident in the antiferromagnetically ordered state of Ba(Fe$_{0.957}$Cu$_{0.043}$)$_2$As$_2$, which is distinc…
We calculate the Heisenberg exchange J in the quasi-2D antiferromagnetic cuprates La2CuO4, YBa2Cu3O6, Nd2CuO4 and Sr2CuO2Cl2. We apply all-electron (MC)SCF and non-orthogonal CI calculations to [Cu2O11]18-, [Cu2O9]14-, [Cu2O7]10- and [Cu2O7Cl4]14- clusters in a model charge embedding. The (MC)SCF triplet and singlet ground states are well characterized by Cu2+ (dx2-y2) and O2-. The antiferromagnetic exchange is strongly enhanced by admixing relaxed (MC)SCF triplet and singlet excited states, in which a single electron is transferred from the central O ion to Cu. We ascribe this effect to orbit…
Neutrons have played an important role in advancing our understanding of the pairing mechanism and the symmetry of the superconducting energy gap in the iron arsenide compounds. Neutron measurements of the phonon density-of-state are in good agreement with ab initio calculations, provided the magnetism of the iron atoms is taken into account. However, the predicted superconducting transition temperatures are less than 1 K, making a conventional phononic mechanism for superconductivity highly unlikely. Measurements of the spin dynamics within the spin density wave phase of the parent compounds …
One of the universal features of unconventional superconductors is that the superconducting (SC) state is developed in the proximity of an antiferromagnetic (AFM) state. Understanding the interplay between these two states is one of the key issues to uncover the underlying physics of unconventional SC mechanism. Here, we report a pressure-induced flipping of the AFM state to SC state in the quasi-one-dimensional AMn6Bi5 (A = K, Rb, and Cs) compounds. We find that at a critical pressure the AFM state suddenly disappears at a finite temperature and a SC state simultaneously emerges at a lower te…
Motivated by recent experiments reporting superconductivity only at very low temperature in a class of heavy fermion compounds, we study the impact of energy fluctuations with small momentum transfer on the pairing instability near an antiferromagnetic quantum critical point. While these fluctuations, formed by composite spin fluctuations, were proposed to explain the thermodynamic and transport properties near the quantum critical point of compounds such as YbRh$_{2}$Si$_{2}$ and CeCu$_{6-x}$Au$_{x}$ at $x\approx0.1$, here they are found to strongly suppress $T_{c}$ of the $d$-wave pairing of…
An general survey of the superconducting (SC) gap study in the title compounds by point-contact (PC) spectroscopy is presented. The SC gap was determined from dV/dI of PCs employing the well-known theory of conductivity for normal metal-superconductor PCs accounting Andreev reflection. The theory was modified by including pair-breaking effects considering the presence of magnetic rare-earth ions. A possible multiband structure of these compounds was also taken into account. The PC study of the gap in the Er-compound (TN=6K<Tc=11K) gives =evidence for the presence of two SC gaps. Additionally, …
The rare-earth compounds R2O2Bi (R=Tb, Dy, Er, Lu, Y) are newly discovered superconductors in the vicinity of a rare-earth magnetic long-range order. In this work, we determine the magnetic order of the parent compound Dy2O2Te by neutron scattering as the A-type antiferromagnetic structure below the Néel temperature TN=9.7K. The large staggered magnetic moment 9.4(1) μB per Dy at T=3.5K lies in the basal ab plane. In a magnetic field, anomalous magnetic properties including the bifurcation between zero-field- and field-cooling magnetization, a butterfly-shaped magnetic hysteresis, and slow mag…
We have studied the newly found superconductor compound LaO$_{1-x}$F$_x$FeAs through the first-principles density functional theory calculations. We find that the parent compound LaOFeAs is a quasi-2-dimensional antiferromgnetic semimetal with most carriers being electrons and with a magnetic moment of $2.3μ_B$ located around each Fe atom on the Fe-Fe square lattice. Furthermore this is a commensurate antiferromagnetic spin density wave due to the Fermi surface nesting, which is robust against the F-doping. The observed superconduction happens on the Fe-Fe antiferromagnetic layer, suggesting a…
The recently discovered K-Fe-Se high temperature superconductor has caused heated debate regarding the nature of its parent compound. Transport, angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, and STM measurements have suggested that its parent compound could be insulating, semiconducting or even metallic [M. H. Fang, H.-D. Wang, C.-H. Dong, Z.-J. Li, C.-M. Feng, J. Chen, and H. Q. Yuan, Europhys. Lett. 94, 27009 (2011); F. Chen et al. Phys. Rev. X 1, 021020 (2011); and W. Li et al.,Phys. Rev. Lett. 109, 057003 (2012)]. Because the magnetic ground states associated with these different phases have …
Mn-based superconductor is rare and recently reported in quasi-one-dimensional KMn$_6$Bi$_5$ with [Mn$_6$Bi$_5$]-columns under high pressure. Here we report the synthesis, magnetic properties, electrical resistivity, and specific heat capacity of the newly-discovered quasi-one-dimensional NaMn$_6$Bi$_5$ single crystal. Compared with other AMn$_6$Bi$_5$ (A = K, Rb, and Cs), NaMn$_6$Bi$_5$ has larger intra-column Bi-Bi bond length, which may result in the two decoupled antiferromagnetic transitions at 47.3 K and 52.3 K. The relatively lower antiferromagnetic transition temperatures make NaMn$_6$…
We report infrared studies of AFe$_{2}$As$_{2}$ (A = Ba, Sr), two representative parent compounds of iron-arsenide superconductors, at magnetic fields (B) up to 17.5 T. Optical transitions between Landau levels (LLs) were observed in the antiferromagnetic states of these two parent compounds. Our observation of a $\sqrt{B}$ dependence of the LL transition energies, the zero-energy intercepts at B = 0 T under the linear extrapolations of the transition energies and the energy ratio ($\sim$ 2.4) between the observed LL transitions, combined with the linear band dispersions in two-dimensional (2D…
We report 75As-NMR/NQR results on new iron-arsenide compounds (La0.5-xNa0.5+x)Fe2As2. The parent compound x=0 exhibits a stripe-type antiferromagnetic (AFM) order below T_N=130 K. The measurement of nuclear spin relaxation rate at hole-doped x=+0.3 and heavily electron-doped x=-0.5 revealed that the normal-state properties are dominated by AFM spin fluctuations (AFMSFs), which are more significant at x=+0.3 than at x=-0.5. Their superconducting (SC) phases are characterized by unconventional multi-gap SC state, where the smaller SC gaps are particularly weaken in common. The experimental resul…
Recently reported quasiparticle interference imaging in underdoped Ca(Fe{1-x}Co{x})_2As{2} shows pronounced C{2} asymmetry that is interpreted as an indication of an electronic nematic phase with a unidirectional electron band, dispersive predominantly along the $b$-axis of this orthorhombic material. On the other hand, even more recent transport measurements on untwinned samples show near isotropy of the resistivity in the $ab$ plane, with slightly larger conductivity along a (and not b). We show that in fact both sets of data are consistent with the calculated ab initio Fermi surfaces, which…
We present a detailed NQR, NMR and $μ$SR study of a magnetic phase obtained during a topotactic chemical reaction of YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{6.5}$ high- temperature superconductor with low-pressure water vapor. Our studies give straightforward evidence that the ''empty'' Cu(1) chains play the role of an easy water insertion channel. It is shown that the NQR spectrum of the starting material transforms progressively under insertion of water, and completely disappears when one H$_{2}$O molecule is inserted per unit cell. Similarly, a Cu ZFNMR signal characteristic of this water inserted material ap…
It has long been a challenging task to find compounds with similar crystal and electronic structures as cuprate superconductors with low dimensionality and strong antiferromagnetic fluctuations. The parent compounds of cuprate superconductors are Mott insulators with strong in-plane antiferromagnetic exchange interactions between Cu moments. Here we show, based on first-principles density functional calculations, that AFeSe2 (A=Tl, K, Rb, or Cs) exhibit many of the physical properties common to the cuprate parent compounds: (1) the FeSe2 layer in AFeSe2 is similar in crystalline and electronic…
Strongly correlated electrons in layered perovskite structures have been the birthplace of high-temperature superconductivity, spin liquid, and quantum criticality. Specifically, the cuprate materials with layered structures made of corner sharing square planar CuO$_4$ units have been intensely studied due to their Mott insulating grounds state which leads to high-temperature superconductivity upon doping. Identifying new compounds with similar lattice and electronic structures has become a challenge in solid state chemistry. Here, we report the hydrothermal crystal growth of a new copper tell…
In this paper the magnetic behaviour of SmFeAsO and SmFeAs(O0.85F0.15) samples is presented and discussed. Molar susceptibility of SmFeAsO exhibits a local peak at T around 140K due to the establishment of a long range antiferromagnetic ordering of the Fe moments in Fe-As layers. This feature has already been observed with different techniques, and frequently ascribed to the onset of a Spin Density Wave (SDW). At TN around 6K another peak, which we attribute to the establishment of antiferromagnetic ordering of Sm ion sublattice, is observed. Furthermore, a temperature independent signal (Paul…
We report the first observation of soft-x-ray scattering from spin fluctuations in a high-Tc parent compound. An antiferromagnetic charge transfer insulator, CaCuO2, was irradiated by Cu M-edge soft x-rays. Ultra-high resolution measurements of scattered intensity revealed magnon-magnon excitations, due to spin exchange scattering, as low-energy loss features. The process is analogous to optical Raman scattering. The spectra provide the first measurement of the two-magnon excitation energy and the antiferromagnetic exchange parameter in infinite-layer CaCuO2. The results reveal resonant inelas…
A Neutron Powder Diffraction (NPD) experiment has been performed to investigate the structural phase transition and magnetic order in CaFe1-xCoxAsF superconductor compounds (x = 0, 0.06, 0.12). The parent compound CaFeAsF undergoes a tetragonal to orthorhombic phase transition at 134(3) K, while the magnetic order in form of a spin-density wave (SDW) sets in at 114(3) K. The antiferromagnetic structure of the parent compound has been determined with a unique propagation vector k = (1,0,1) and the Fe saturation moment of 0.49(5)uB aligned along the long a-axis. With increasing Co doping, the lo…
The chromium arsenides BaCr2As2 and BaCrFeAs2 with ThCr2Si2 type structure (space group I4/mmm; also adopted by '122' iron arsenide superconductors) have been suggested as mother compounds for possible new superconductors. DFT-based calculations of the electronic structure evidence metallic antiferromagnetic ground states for both compounds. By powder neutron diffraction we confirm for BaCr2As2 a robust ordering in the antiferromagnetic G-type structure at T_N = 580 K with mu_Cr = 1.9 mu_B at T = 2K. Anomalies in the lattice parameters point to magneto-structural coupling effects. In BaCrFeAs2…
