Can a given Lagrangian submanifold be realized as the fixed point set of an anti-symplectic involution? If so, it is called \emph{real}. We give an obstruction for a closed Lagrangian submanifold to be real in terms of the displacement energy of nearby Lagrangians. Applying this obstruction to toric fibres, we obtain that the central fibre of many (and probably all) toric monotone symplectic manifolds is real only if the corresponding moment polytope is centrally symmetric. Furthermore, we embed the Chekanov torus in all toric monotone symplectic manifolds and show that it is exotic and not real, extending Kim's result (arXiv:1909.09972) for $S^2 \times S^2$. Inside products of $S^2$, we show that all products of Chekanov tori are pairwise distinct and not real either. These results indicate that real tori are rare. Our methods are elementary in the sense that we do not use~$J$-holomorphic curves. Instead, we rely on symplectic reduction and the displacement energy of product tori in $\mathbb{R}^{2n}$.
In this note we analyze displaceability of pre-Lagrangian toric fibers in contact toric manifolds. While every symplectic toric manifold contains at least one non-displaceable Lagrangian toric fiber and infinitely many displaceable ones, we show that this is not the case for contact toric manifolds. More precisely, we prove that for the contact toric manifolds $\mathbb{S}^{2d-1} (d\geq 2)$ and $\mathbb{T}^k \times \mathbb{S}^{2d+k-1} (d \geq 1)$ all pre-Lagrangian toric fibers are displaceable, and that for all contact toric manifolds for which the toric action is free, except possibly non-tri…
In this article, using the idea of toric degeneration and the computation of the full potential function of Hirzebruch surface $F_2$, which is \emph{not} Fano, we produce a continuum of Lagrangian tori in $S^2 \times S^2$ which are non-displaceable under the Hamiltonian isotopy.
We construct monotone Lagrangian tori in the standard symplectic vector space, in the complex projective space and in products of spheres. We explain how to classify these Lagrangian tori up to symplectomorphism and Hamiltonian isotopy, and how to show that they are not displaceable by Hamiltonian isotopies.
This small note contains two simple remarks about Bohr - Sommerfeld with respect to the anticanonical class lagrangian tori in the projective spaces, which are the most popular examples of monotone symplectic manifolds.
We prove the existence of a one-parameter family of nondisplaceable Lagrangian tori near a linear chain of Lagrangian 2-spheres in a symplectic 4-manifold. When the symplectic structure is rational we prove that the deformed Floer cohomology groups of these tori are nontrivial. The proof uses the idea of toric degeneration to analyze the full potential functions with bulk deformations of these tori.
Product Lagrangian tori in standard symplectic space $R^{2n}$ were classified up to symplectomorphism in [Che96]. We extend this classification to tame symplectically aspherical symplectic manifolds. We show by examples that the asphericity assumption cannot be omitted.
We prove some results about linking of Lagrangian tori in the symplectic vector space $(\mathbb{R}^4, ω)$. We show that certain enumerative counts of holomophic disks give useful information about linking. This enables us to prove, for example, that any two Clifford tori are unlinked in a strong sense. We extend work of Dimitroglou Rizell and Evans on linking of monotone Lagrangian tori to a class of non-monotone tori in $\mathbb{R}^4$ and also strengthen their conclusions in the monotone case in $\mathbb{R}^4$.
We extract from a toric model of the Chekanov-Schlenk exotic torus in $\mathbb{CP}^2$ methods of construction of Lagrangian submanifolds in toric symplectic manifolds. These constructions allow for some control of the monotonicity. We recover this way some known monotone Lagrangians in the toric symplectic manifolds $\mathbb{CP}^2$ and $\mathbb{CP}^1 \times \mathbb{CP}^1$ as well as new examples.
An effective class in a closed symplectic four-manifold $(X, ω)$ is a two-dimensional homology class which is realized by a $J$-holomorphic cycle for every tamed almost complex structure $J$. We prove that effective classes are orthogonal to Lagrangian tori in $H_2 (X ; \Bbb{Z})$.
We construct an exotic monotone Lagrangian torus in CP^2 using techniques motivated by mirror symmetry. We show that it bounds 10 families of Maslov index 2 holomorphic discs, and it follows that this exotic torus is not Hamiltonian isotopic to the known Clifford and Chekanov tori.
In this note, we prove that two constructions of exotic monotone Lagrangian tori, namely the one by Chekanov and Schlenk and the one obtained by the circle bundle construction of Biran are Hamiltonian isotopic in $\mathbb{C}P^2$ and $S^2 \times S^2$.
Given a fibration of a symplectic manifold by lagrangian tori, we show that each symplectic vector field splits into two parts : the first is Hamiltonian and the second is symplectic and preserves the fibration. We then show an application of this result in the study of the regular deformations of completely integrable systems.
We construct infinitely many families of monotone Lagrangian tori in $\mathbb{R}^6$, no two of which are related by Hamiltonian isotopies (or symplectomorphisms). These families are distinguished by the (arbitrarily large) numbers of families of Maslov index 2 pseudo-holomorphic discs that they bound.
We prove that a monotone Lagrangian torus in $S^2\times S^2$ which suitably sits in a symplectic fibration with two sections in its complement is Hamiltonian isotopic to the Clifford torus.
We use Floer cohomology to prove the monotone version of a conjecture of Audin: the minimal Maslov number of a monotone Lagrangian torus in C^n is 2. Our approach is based on the study of the quantum cup product on Floer cohomology and in particular the behaviour of Oh's spectral sequence with respect to this product. As further applications we prove existence of holomorphic disks with boundaries on Lagrangians as well as new results on Lagrangian intersections.
We compute the Lagrangian Floer cohomology groups of certain tori in closed simply connected symplectic 4-manifolds arising from Fintushel-Stern knot surgery. These manifolds are usually not symplectically aspherical. As a result of the computation we observe examples where $HF(L_0)\cong HF(L_1)$ and $L_0$ and $L_1$ are smoothly isotopic but $L_0,L_1$ are not symplectically isotopic and are distinguished by $HF(L_0,L_1)$.
We study the Lagrangian quantum homology of real parts of Fano toric manifolds of minimal Chern number at least 2, using coefficients in a ring of Laurent polynomials over Z/2Z. We show that these Lagrangians are wide, in the sense that their quantum homology is isomorphic as a module to their classical homology tensored with this ring. Moreover, we show that the quantum homology is isomorphic as a ring to the quantum homology of the ambient symplectic manifold.
We classify weakly exact, rational Lagrangian tori in $T^* \mathbb{T}^2- 0_{\mathbb{T}^2}$ up to Hamiltonian isotopy. This result is related to the classification theory of closed $1$-forms on $\mathbb{T}^n$ and also has applications to symplectic topology. As a first corollary, we strengthen a result due independently to Eliashberg-Polterovich and to Giroux describing Lagrangian tori in $T^* \mathbb{T}^2-0_{\mathbb{T}^2}$ which are homologous to the zero section. As a second corollary, we exhibit pairs of disjoint totally real tori $K_1, K_2 \subset T^*\mathbb{T}^2$, each of which is isotopic…
We construct almost toric fibrations (ATFs) on all del Pezzo surfaces, endowed with a monotone symplectic form. Except for $\mathbb{C}P^2 \# 1 \overline{\mathbb{C}P^2}$ and $\mathbb{C}P^2 \# 2 \overline{\mathbb{C}P^2}$ , we are able to get almost toric base diagrams (ATBDs) of triangular shape and prove the existence of infinitely many symplectomorphism (in particular Hamiltonian isotopy) classes of monotone Lagrangian tori in $\mathbb{C}P^2 \# k \overline{\mathbb{C}P^2}$, for k=0,3,4,5,6,7,8. We name these tori $Θ^{n_1,n_2,n_3}_{p,q,r}$. Using the work of Karpov-Nogin, we are able to classify…
Related to each degeneration from CP^2 to CP(a^2,b^2,c^2), for (a,b,c) a Markov triple - positive integers satisfying a^2 + b^2 + c^2 = 3abc - there is a monotone Lagrangian torus, which we call T(a^2,b^2,c^2). We employ techniques from symplectic field theory to prove that no two of them are Hamiltonian isotopic to each other.
We construct Lagrangian sections of a Lagrangian torus fibration on a 3-dimensional conic bundle, which are SYZ dual to holomorphic line bundles over the mirror toric Calabi-Yau 3-fold. We then demonstrate a ring isomorphism between the wrapped Floer cohomology of the zero-section and the regular functions on the mirror toric Calabi-Yau 3-fold. Furthermore, we show that in the case when the Calabi-Yau 3-fold is affine space, the zero section generates the wrapped Fukaya category of the mirror conic bundle. This allows us to complete the proof of one direction of homological mirror symmetry for…
By a result due to Ziltener, there exist no closed embedded Bohr-Sommerfeld Lagrangians inside $\mathbb CP^n$ for the prequantisation bundle whose total space is the standard contact sphere. On the other hand, any embedded monotone Lagrangian torus has a canonical nontrivial cover which is a Bohr-Sommerfeld immersion. We draw the front projections for the corresponding Legendrian lifts inside a contact Darboux ball of the threefold covers of both the two-dimensional Clifford and Chekanov tori (the former is the Legendrian link of the Harvey-Lawson special Lagrangian cone), and compute the asso…
In this article, we consider the Floer cohomology (with $\Z_2$ coefficients) between torus fibers and the real Lagrangian in Fano toric manifolds. We first investigate the conditions under which the Floer cohomology is defined, and then develop a combinatorial description of the Floer complex based on the polytope of the toric manifold. We show that if the Floer cohomology is defined, and the Floer cohomology of the torus fiber is non-zero, then the Floer cohomology of the pair is non-zero. We use this result to develop some applications to non-displaceability and the minimum number of interse…
In this paper we show that there exist simply connected symplectic 4-manifolds which contain infinitely many knotted lagrangian tori, i.e. lagrangian embeddings of tori that are homotopic but not isotopic. Moreover, the homology class they represent can be assumed to be nontrivial and primitive. This answers a question of Eliashberg and Polterovich.
We exhibit monotone Lagrangian tori inside the standard symplectic four-dimensional unit ball that become Hamiltonian isotopic to the Clifford torus, i.e.~the standard product torus, only when considered inside a strictly larger ball (they are not even symplectomorphic to a standard torus inside the unit ball). These tori are then used to construct new examples of symplectic embeddings of toric domains into the unit ball which are symplectically knotted in the sense of J.~Gutt and M.~Usher. We also give a characterisation of the Clifford torus inside the ball as well as the projective plane in…
In recent papers, summarized in survey [1], we construct a number of examples of non standard lagrangian tori on compact toric varieties and as well on certain non toric varieties which admit pseudotoric structures. Using this pseudotoric technique we explain how non standard lagrangian tori of Chekanov type can be constructed and what is the topological difference between standard Liouville tori and the non standard ones. However we have not discussed the natural question about the periods of the constructed twist tori; in particular the monotonicity problem for the monotonic case was not stu…
The following interesting quantity was introduced by K. Cieliebak and K. Mohnke for a Lagrangian submanifold $L$ of a symplectic manifold: the minimal positive symplectic area of a disc with boundary on $L$. They also showed that this quantity is bounded from above by $π/n$ for a Lagrangian torus inside the $2n$-dimensional unit disc equipped with the standard symplectic form. A Lagrangian torus for which this upper bound is attained is called extremal. We show that an extremal Lagrangian torus inside the four-dimensional unit disc is contained in the boundary $\partial D^4=S^3$, and is hence …
Mironov, Panov and Kotelskiy studied Hamiltonian-minimal Lagrangians inside $\mathbb{C}^n$. They associated a closed embedded Lagrangian $L$ to each Delzant polytope $P$. In this paper we develop their ideas and prove that $L$ is monotone if and only if the polytope $P$ is Fano. In some examples, we further compute the minimal Maslov numbers. Namely, let $\mathcal{N}\to T^k$ be some fibration over the $k$-dimensional torus with a fiber equal to either $S^k \times S^l$, or $S^k \times S^l \times S^m$, or $\#_5(S^{2p-1} \times S^{n-2p-2})$. We construct monotone Lagrangian embeddings $\mathcal{N…
In this paper we introduce a new way of displacing Lagrangian fibers in toric symplectic manifolds, a generalization of McDuff's original method of probes. Extended probes are formed by deflecting one probe by another auxiliary probe. Using them, we are able to displace all fibers in Hirzebruch surfaces except those already known to be nondisplaceable, and can also displace an open dense set of fibers in the weighted projective space P(1,3,5) after resolving the singularities. We also investigate the displaceability question in sectors and their resolutions. There are still many cases in which…
We show that, up to Lagrangian isotopy, there is a unique Lagrangian torus inside each of the following uniruled symplectic four-manifolds: the symplectic vector space $\mathbb{R}^4$, the projective plane $\mathbb{C}P^2$, and the monotone $S^2 \times S^2$. The result is proven by studying pseudoholomorphic foliations while performing the splitting construction from symplectic field theory along the Lagrangian torus. A number of other related results are also shown. Notably, the nearby Lagrangian conjecture is established for $T^*\mathbb{T}^2$, i.e.~it is shown that every closed exact Lagrangia…
We construct a family of Lagrangian tori $Θ^n_s$ $\subset$ $(\mathbb{C}P^1)^n$, $s \in (0,1)$, where $Θ^n_{1/2} = Θ^n$, is the monotone twist Lagrangian torus described by Chekanov-Schlenk. We show that for $n = 2m$ and $s \ge 1/2$ these tori are non-displaceable. Then by considering $Θ^{k_1}_{s_1}$ $ \times$ $\cdots$ $\times$ $ Θ^{k_l}_{s_l}$ $ \times$ $ (S^2_{\mathrm{eq}})^{n - \sum_i k_i}$ $ \subset $ $(\mathbb{C}P^1)^n$, with $s_i \in [1/2,1)$ and $k_i \in 2\mathbb{Z}_{>0}$, $\sum_i k_i \le n$ we get several $l$-dimensional families of non-displaceable Lagrangian tori. We also show that th…
We prove that every smoothly immersed 2-torus of $\mathbb{R}^4$ can be approximated, in the C0-sense, by immersed polyhedral Lagrangian tori. In the case of a smoothly immersed (resp. embedded) Lagrangian torus of $\mathbb{R}^4$, the surface can be approximated in the C1-sense by immersed (resp. embedded) polyhedral Lagrangian tori. Similar statements are proved for isotropic 2-tori of $\mathbb{R}^{2n}$.
We investigate which orbits of an $n$-dimensional torus action on a $2n$-dimensional toric Kähler manifold $M$ are minimal. In other words, we study minimal submanifolds appearing as the fibres of the moment map on a toric Kähler manifold. Amongst other questions we investigate and give partial answers to the following: (1) How many such minimal Lagrangian tori exist? (2) Can their stability, as critical points of the area functional, be characterised just from the ambient geometry? (3) Given a toric symplectic manifold, for which sets of orbits $S$, is there a compatible toric Kähler metric w…
This is a continuation of part I in the series of the papers on Lagrangian Floer theory on toric manifolds. Using the deformations of Floer cohomology by the ambient cycles, which we call bulk deformations, we find a continuum of non-displaceable Lagrangian fibers on some compact toric manifolds. We also provide a method of finding all fibers with non-vanishing Floer cohomology with bulk deformations in arbitrary compact toric manifolds, which we call bulk-balanced Lagrangian fibers.
Two smooth map germs are right-equivalent if and only if they generate two Lagrangian submanifolds in a cotangent bundle which have the same contact with the zero-section. In this paper we provide a reverse direction to this classical result of Golubitsky and Guillemin. Two Lagrangian submanifolds of a symplectic manifold have the same contact with a third Lagrangian submanifold if and only if the intersection problems correspond to stably right equivalent map germs. We, therefore, obtain a correspondence between local Lagrangian intersection problems and catastrophe theory while the classical…
We prove the Hamiltonian unknottedness of real Lagrangian tori in the monotone $S^2\times S^2$, namely any real Lagrangian torus in $S^2\times S^2$ is Hamiltonian isotopic to the Clifford torus $\mathbb{T}_{\text{Clif}}$. The proof is based on a neck-stretching argument, Gromov's foliation theorem, and the Cieliebak-Schwingenheuer criterion.
In 1993, Y.-G. Oh proposed a problem whether standard Lagrangian tori in C^n are volume minimizing under Hamiltonian isotopies of C^n. In this article, we prove that most of them do not have such property if the dimension n is greater than two. We also discuss the existence of Hamiltonian non-volume minimizing Lagrangian torus orbits of compact toric Kahler manifolds.
For the sake of hyperk{ä}hler SYZ conjecture, finding holomorphic Lagrangian fibrations becomes an important issue. Toric hyperk{ä}hler manifolds are real dimension $4n$ non-compact hyperk{ä}hler manifolds which are quaternion analog of toric varieties. The $n$ dimensional residue circle action on it admitting a hyperk{ä}hler moment map. We use the complex part of this moment map to construct a holomorphic Lagrangian fibration with generic fiber diffeomorphic to $(\mathbb{C}^*)^n$, and study the singular fibers.
The Hamiltonian shape invariant of a domain $X \subset \mathbb R^4$, as a subset of $\mathbb R^2$, describes the product Lagrangian tori which may be embedded in $X$. We provide necessary and sufficient conditions to determine whether or not a path in the shape invariant can lift, that is, be realized as a smooth family of embedded Lagrangian tori, when $X$ is a basic $4$-dimensional toric domain such as a ball $B^4(R)$, an ellipsoid $E(a,b)$ with $\frac{b}{a} \in {\mathbb N}_{\geq 2}$, or a polydisk $P(c,d)$. As applications, via the path lifting, we can detect knotted embeddings of product L…
We define new Hamiltonian isotopy invariants for a monotone Lagrangian torus embedded in a symplectic 4-manifold. We show that, in the standard symplectic 4-space, these invariants distinguish a monotone Clifford torus from a Chekanov torus.
Let $M\subset\mathbb{C}^{n+1}$ be a smooth affine hypersurface defined by the equation $xy+p(z_1,\cdots,z_{n-1})=1$, where $p$ is a Brieskorn-Pham polynomial and $n\geq2$. We prove that if $L\subset M$ is an orientable exact Lagrangian submanifold, then $L$ does not admit a Riemannian metric with non-positive sectional curvature. The key point of the proof is to establish a version of homological mirror symmetry for the wrapped Fukaya category of $M$, from which the finite-dimensionality of the symplectic cohomology group $\mathit{SH}^0(M)$ follows by a Hochschild cohomology computation.
In this paper, we study various asymptotic behavior of the infinite family of monotone Lagrangian tori $T_{a,b,c}$ in $\mathbb{CP}^2$ associated to Markov triples $(a,b,c)$ described in \cite{Vi14}. We first prove that the Gromov capacity of the complement $\mathbb{CP}^2 \setminus T_{a,b,c}$ is greater than or equal to $\frac13$ of the area of the complex line for all Markov triple $(a,b,c)$. We then prove that there is a representative of the family $\{T_{a,b,c}\}$ whose loci completely miss a metric ball of nonzero size and in particular the loci of the union of the family is not dense in $\…
