A precise knowledge of charged Triple Gauge Couplings (cTGCs) is important for the determination of Higgs couplings and for constraining physics beyond the Standard Model. Future high-energy $e^{+}e^{-}$ colliders could have a significantly improved sensitivity to anomalous cTGCs. The fit framework presented here extracts cTGCs in parallel with chiral cross sections and beam polarisation parameters. It demonstrates that cTGCs can be measured with precision in the $10^{-3}-10^{-4}$ range. A strong dependence of the cTGC sensitivity on the available luminosities and polarisations is observed.
The event generator BEEC [Z. Yang, X.G. Wu and X.Y. Wang, Comput. Phys. Commun. 184, 2848 (2013)] was devoted to the simulation of heavy quarkonium production at an unpolarized electron-positron collider. We upgraded it here by adding the generation of quarkonium with polarized electron and positron beams. In addition, the production of color-singlet 2S-wave states were included. Several future electron-positron colliders with high luminosity have been under discussion in the past decade. Especially, their possibility of producing polarized beams is important for providing more insights into t…
We propose a new beam dump experiment at future colliders with electron ($e^-$) and positron ($e^+$) beams, BDee, which will provide a new possibility to search for hidden particles, like hidden photon. If a particle detector is installed behind the beam dump, it can detect the signal of in-flight decay of the hidden particles produced by the scatterings of $e^\pm$ beams off materials for dumping. We show that, compared to past experiments, BDee (in particular BDee at $e^+e^-$ linear collider) significantly enlarges the parameter region where the signal of the hidden particle can be discovered…
Two photon collisions offer a variety of physics studies that can be performed at the future electron-positron colliders. Using the planned CEPC parameters as a benchmark we consider several topics to be studied in the two-photon collisions. With the full integrated luminosity the Higgs boson photoproduction can be reliably observed. A large statistics of various quarkonium states can be collected. The LEP results on the photon structure function and the tau lepton anomalous magnetic moment can be improved by 1-2 orders of magnitude.
The International Linear Collider is now proposed with a staged machine design, with the first stage at $\sqrt{s}=$~250 GeV and an integrated luminosity goal of 2~ab$^{-1}$. One of the questions for the machine design is the importance of positron polarization. In this report, we review the impact of positron polarization on the physics goals of the $250$ GeV stage of the ILC and demonstrate that positron polarization has distinct advantages.
The effect of single top production on the study of top quark pair production in future high energy electron--positron colliders is evaluated. The rate of the single top quark production process is sizeable throughout a large range of center-of-mass energies and cannot easily be distinguished from the dominant pair production process. We discuss the impact on the top quark mass extraction from a scan through the pair production threshold and the determination of top quark form factors in the continuum. These results advocate for the exploration of the inclusive $e^+e^-\rightarrow W^+bW^-\bar{b…
The generalized Crewther relation relates the cross section ratio $R=σ(e^+e^- \to {\rm hadrons})/σ(e^+e^- \to μ^+ μ^-)$ in $e^+e^-$ annihilation with the Bjorken sum rule or the Gross-Llewellyn Smith sum rule in deep inelastic scattering and provides a fundamental connection for observables in Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) without scale or scheme ambiguities. The ratio $R$ can be measured at the upgrated Bejing Electron Positron Collider or the $τ$-Charm factory with higher precision and thus can be served for a high precision test of QCD in the Standard Model.
The physics potential of an e+e- linear collider can be significantly enhanced if both the electron and positron beams are polarised. Low energy running at the Z-resonance or close to the W-pair threshold is particularly attractive with polarised positrons. This note discusses the experimental aspects and physics opportunities of both low energy running and positron polarisation.
By exploiting the relatively long lifetime of the tau lepton, we propose several novel methods for searching for new physics at an electron-positron collider. We consider processes that involve final states consisting of a tau lepton pair plus two missing particles. The mass and spin of the new physics particles can be measured in 3-prong tau decays. The tau polarization, which reflects the coupling to new physics, can be measured from the $τ\to πν$ decay channel using the impact parameter distribution of the charged pion. We also discuss the corresponding backgrounds for these measurements, t…
Precision studies at electron-positron colliders with center-of-mass energies in the charm-tau region and below have strongly contributed to our understanding of light-meson interactions at low energies. We focus on the processes involving two or three light mesons with invariant masses below nucleon-antinucleon threshold. A prominent role is given to the interactions of the nine lightest pseudoscalar mesons (pions, kaons, $η$, and $η'$) and the two narrow neutral isoscalar vector mesons $ω$ and $ϕ$. Experimental methods used to produce the mesons are reviewed as well as theory tools to extrac…
In 2012, a light scalar boson (denoted as H(125) in this paper) was discovered at the LHC. We explore the possible correlation between the lightness of H(125) and the smallness of CP-violation based on the Lee model, namely the spontaneous CP-violation two-Higgs-doublet-model. It is a new way to understand why H(125) is light. Based on this we propose that it is the much heavier scalar bosons, instead of the H(125), which need to be understood. This opens a new paradigm that one tries to understand the electro-weak symmetry breaking and CP violation. For the new paradigm, similar to many other…
The addition of $SU(2)_L$ triplet fermions of zero hypercharge with the Standard Model (SM) helps to explain the origin of the neutrino mass by the so-called seesaw mechanism. Such a scenario is commonly know as the type-III seesaw model. After the electroweak symmetry breaking the mixings between the light and heavy mass eigenstates of the neutral leptons are developed which play important roles in the study of the charged and neutral multiplets of the triplet fermions at the colliders. In this article we study such interactions to produce these multiplets of the triplet fermion at the electr…
In the context of the positrons sources studies for the Future Linear Collider, the Accelerator Department at LAL Orsay is involved since several years in different activities both experiments and simulations.
Probing Higgs width $Γ_h$ is critical to test the Higgs properties. In this work we propose to measure $Γ_h$ at the $e^+e^-$ collider with a model-independent analysis under the Standard Model Effective Field Theory framework. We demonstrate that making use of the cross section measurements from $e^+e^-\to Zh$, $e^+e^-\to ν_e\barν_eh$ production and Higgs decay branching ratios $h\to WW^*/ZZ^*/γγ$, one could determine $Γ_h$ at a percentage level with a center of mass energy $\sqrt{s}=250$ and 350 GeV and integrated luminosity $5~{\rm ab}^{-1}$. This conclusion would not depend on the assumptio…
We present a study to examine the sensitivity of a future $e^{-} e^{+}$ collider to the anomalous top flavour-changing neutral current (FCNC) to the gluon. To separate signal from background a multivariate analysis is performed on top-quark pair and background events, where one top quark is considered to follow the dominant Standard Model (SM) decay, $t \rightarrow Wb$, and the other top decays through FCNC, $t\rightarrow qg$, where $q$ is a $u-$ or a $c-$quark. The analysis of fully-hadronic FCNC decay of the $t \bar{t}$ pair is also presented. The $95\%$ confidence level limits on the top-qu…
The violation of CP symmetry at the electro-weak scale is one of the essential ingredients for electro-weak baryogenesis. It is therefore of great interest to map the CP properties of the Higgs sector in as much detail as possible. A linear electron-positron Higgs factory collider will provide many opportunities to probe the CP nature of the Higgs sector, thanks to access to several Higgs production processes at a wide range of centre-of-mass energies. In this paper we report on two studies based on full simulation of detector response and realistic reconstruction algorithms: 1) a study of $h …
Circular electron positron colliders, such as the CEPC and FCC-ee, have been proposed to measure Higgs boson properties precisely, test the Standard Model, search for physics beyond the Standard Model, and so on. One of the important goals of these colliders is to measure the $W$ boson mass with great precision by taking data around the $W$-pair production threshold. In this paper, the data-taking scheme is investigated to maximize the achievable precisions of the $W$ boson mass and width with a threshold scan, when various systematic uncertainties are taken into account. The study shows that …
We propose a fixed-target experiment to search for Axion-like particles (ALPs) coupling to photons, which utilizes electron and positron beams available at KEK Linac. The sensitivity to ALP is evaluated for two shielding setups in conjunction with other beam dump experiments, fixed-target experiments, and $e^+e^-$ collider experiments. This study shows that the two setups can explore the gap between the search region excluded by the beam dump experiments and the $e^+e^-$ collider experiments.
I summarise the physics opportunities and experimental challenges at future Linear Colliders, using material from the recent ECFA/DESY workshop on the subject as well as contributions to the series of worldwide studies. For reasons of economy, the discussion is restricted to the European Tesla project and to its electron-positron mode only.
A Monte Carlo generator has been constructed to simulate the reaction e^+e^- \to γ+ 4 π, where the photon is assumed to be observed in the detector. Only initial state radiation is considered. Additional collinear photon radiation has been incorporated with the technique of structure functions. Predictions are presented for cms energies of 1GeV, 3GeV and 10GeV, corresponding to the energies of DAPHNE, BEBC and of B-meson factories. The event rates are sufficiently high to allow for a precise measurement of R(Q^2) in the region of Q between approximately 1GeV and 2.5GeV. For the construction of…
An electron-positron linear collider in the energy range between 500 and 1000 GeV is of crucial importance to precisely test the Standard Model and to explore the physics beyond it. The physics program is complementary to that of the Large Hadron Collider. Some of the main physics goals and the expected accuracies of the anticipated measurements at such a linear collider are discussed. A short review of the different collider designs presently under study is given including possible upgrade paths to the multi-TeV region. Finally a framework is presented within which the realisation of such a p…
Particle Identification (PID) plays a key role in heavy flavor physics in high-energy physics experiments. However, its impact on Higgs physics is still not clear. In this note, we will explore some of the potential of PID to improve the identification of heavy-flavour jets by using identified charged Kaons in addition to the traditional vertexing information. This could result in a better measurment of the Higgs-charm Yukawa coupling at the future $e^+e^-$ colliders.
This report describes an all-solid state central tracker which is intended for use in a detector at the proposed DESY 500 GeV electron-positron linear collider or a similar accelerator. The precise position measurements from position-sensitive silicon detectors give the tracker an outstanding momentum resolution for high momentum tracks: sigma_p/p^2 = 3.6 x 10^{-5} (GeV/c)^{-1} for tracks perpendicular to the beam-line. The report concludes with an example layout for a detector which uses this central tracker.
We examine the possibility of using single-Higgs production at an $e^+e^-$ collider with polarized beams to measure, or constrain, indirectly a possible anomalous triple-Higgs coupling, which can contribute to the process via one-loop diagrams. In the dominant process $e^+e^- \to ZH$, longitudinally polarized beams can lead to an improvement in the cross section by 50\% for $e^-$ and $e^+$ polarizations of $-0.8$ and $+0.3$, respectively. This corresponds to an improvement in the sensitivity to the triple-Higgs coupling of about 18\% for a centre-of-mass energy of 250 GeV and an integrated lum…
This exposition provides a detailed picture of ongoing and planned activities towards the development of a detector for a high-energy Linear Collider. Cases for which research and development activity does not exist, or needs to be bolstered, are identified for the various subsystems. The case is made that the full exploitation of the potential of a high-energy Linear Collider will require the augmentation of existing detector technology and simulation capability, and that this program should become a major focus of the worldwide particle physics community should the construction of a Linear C…
The study of the process $e^+e^- \to W^+W^-$ at Linear Collider energies presents a good opportunity to investigate anomalous triple gauge boson couplings and $W^+_LW^-_L$ rescattering. The helicity analysis of the $e^+e^- \to W^+_LW^-_L$ decays will benefit if the charm quark containing jet can be identified for events which contain one hadronic $W$ boson decay to a charm and another quark. A JAVA implementation of the SLD collaboration's topological vertex finding algorithm (ZVTOP) in the linear collider analysis framework has been used to extract charm tag efficiencies and purities based on…
After the Higgs discovery, precise measurements of the Higgs properties and the electroweak observables become vital for the experimental particle physics. A powerful Higgs/Z factory, the Circular Electron Positron Collider(CEPC) is proposed. The Particle Flow oriented detector design is proposed to the CEPC and a Particle Flow algorithm, Arbor is optimized accordingly. We summarize the physics object reconstruction performance of the Particle Flow oriented detector design with Arbor algorithm and conclude that this combination fulfills the physics requirement of CEPC.
In this letter, we evaluate potential of linear $e^+e^-$ colliders to measure the top quark mass in radiative events and in a suitable short-distance scheme. We present a calculation of the differential cross section for production of a top quark pair in association with an energetic photon from initial state radiation, as a function of the invariant mass of the $t\bar{t}$ system. This {\it matched} calculation includes the QCD enhancement of the cross section around the $t\bar{t}$ production threshold and remains valid in the continuum well above the threshold. The uncertainty in the top mass…
TPC is a promising technology for the future electron positron colliders. However, its application might be limited at high event rate and high hit occupancies. In this paper, we study the feasibility of using TPC at the circular electron positron collider (CEPC) at $Z$ pole using full simulated $Z \rightarrow q\bar{q}$ samples. By evaluating the local charge density and voxel occupancy at different TPC parameters. Our study shows that the TPC could be applied to the CEPC $Z$ pole operation if back flow ion is controlled to per mille level. We also suggest the applicable TPC parameters for FCC…
We discuss a low energy $e^+e^-$ collider for production of the not yet observed ($μ^+μ^-$) bound system (dimuonium). Collider with large crossing angle for $e^+e^-$ beams intersection produces dimuonium with non-zero momentum, therefore, its decay point is shifted from the beam collision area providing effective suppression of the elastic $e^+e^-$ scattering background. The experimental constraints define subsequent collider specifications. We show preliminary layout of the accelerator and obtained main parameters. High luminosity in chosen beam energy range allows to study $π^\pm$ and $η$ -m…
We study the phenomenology of the type-II seesaw model at a linear e^-e^- collider. We show that the process e^-e^- \rightarrow alpha^-beta^- (alpha, beta = e, mu, tau being charged leptons) mediated by a doubly charged scalar is very sensitive to the neutrino parameters, in particular the absolute neutrino mass scale and the Majorana CP-violating phases. We identify the regions in parameter space in which appreciable collider signatures in the channel with two like-sign muons in the final state are possible. This includes Higgs triplet masses beyond the reach of the LHC.
We present a calculation of the cross section for the process e+ e- --> W+/- H-/+ in the minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM) and the Two Higgs Doublet Model (THDM). We study the basic features of the MSSM prediction for some distinctive parameter scenarios. We find large effects from virtual squarks for scenarios with large mixing in the stop sector which can lead to a cross section vastly different from a THDM with identical Higgs sector parameters. We investigate this interesting behaviour in more detail by thoroughly scanning the MSSM parameter space for regions of large cross sect…
We suggest that supersymmetric dark matter be used to set the energy scale of a linear $e^+ e^-$ collider. Assuming that the lightest supersymmetric particle (LSP) is a stable neutralino $χ$, as in many incarnations of the MSSM with conserved R parity, previous calculations that include coannihilation effects have delineated the region of the $(m_{1/2}, m_0)$ plane where the LSP cosmological relic density lies in the preferred range $0.1 \la Ω_χ h^2 \la 0.3$. We evaluate here the total cross section for $e^+ e^- \to$ visible pairs of supersymmetric particles, for different values of $m_{1/2}$ …
We propose a dark matter explanation to simultaneously account for the excess of antiproton-to-proton and positron power spectra observed in the AMS-02 experiment while having the right dark matter relic abundance and satisfying the current direct search bounds. We extend the Higgs triplet model with a hidden gauge symmetry of $SU(2)_X$ that is broken to $Z_3$ by a quadruplet scalar field, rendering the associated gauge bosons stable weakly-interacting massive particle dark matter candidates. By coupling the complex Higgs triplet and the $SU(2)_X$ quadruplet, the dark matter candidates can ann…
Conformal tracking is an innovative and comprehensive pattern recognition technique using a cellular automaton-based track finding performed in a conformally-mapped space. It is particularly well-suited for light-weight silicon systems with high position resolution, such as the next generation of tracking detectors designed for future electron-positron colliders. The algorithm has been developed and validated with simulated data of the CLICdet tracker. It has demonstrated not only excellent performance in terms of tracking efficiency, fake rate and track parameters resolution but also robustne…
We report on the status and plans of experiments now running or proposed for electron-positron colliders at energies between the $ϕ$ and the Z. The $e^{+}e^{-}$ B and charm factories we considered were PEP-II/BABAR, KEKB/Belle, superKEK, SuperBABAR, and CESR-c/CLEO-c. We reviewed the programs at the $ϕ$ factory at Frascati and the proposed PEP-N facility at Stanford Linear Accelerator Center. We studied the prospects for B physics with a dedicated linear collider Z factory, associated with the TESLA high energy linear collider. In all cases, we compared the physics reach of these facilities wi…
The beam energy measurement system (BEMS) for the upgraded Beijing electron-positron collider BEPC-II is described. The system is based on measuring the energies of Compton back-scattered photons. The relative systematic uncertainty of the electron and positron beam energy determination is estimated as 2 \cdot 10^{-5}. The relative uncertainty of the beam's energy spread is about 6 %.
Based on the PYTHIA physics simulation package, and a fast simulation of the proposed detector for the Next Linear Collider, a set of cuts is identified which leads to a sample of e+e- -> qq events appropriate for the precise measurement of alpha_s in e+e- annihilation at sqrt(s) = 500 GeV/c^2. Using these cuts, the systematic uncertainty on alpha_s associated with correcting for selection cut biases and remaining non-e+e- -> qq (q ^= t) contamination is expected to be less than +/- 1%. This work was done as part of a study of the prospects for the precise measurement of alpha_s at future High…
The beam energy measurement system for the VEPP-2000 electron-positron collider is described. The method of Compton backscattering of $CO$ laser photons on the electron beam is used. The relative systematic uncertainty of the beam energy determination is estimated as 6\cdot10^{-5}. It was obtained through comparison of the results of the beam energy measurements using the Compton backscattering and resonance depolarization methods.
We consider the possibility that dark matter (DM) only interacts with the Standard Model leptons, but not quarks at tree level, and analyze the future lepton collider prospects of such leptophilic DM in the monophoton and mono-$Z$ (both leptonic and hadronic) channels. Adopting a model-independent effective field theory framework, we consider all possible dimension-six operators of scalar-pseudoscalar (SP), vector-axial vector (VA), and tensor-axial tensor (TAT) types for a fermionic DM and derive the collider sensitivities on the effective cutoff scale $Λ$ as a function of the DM mass. As a c…
The introduction of a longitudinal polarised positron beam in an $e^+e^-$ linear collider calls for its polarisation monitoring and measurement at low energies near its production location. Here it is shown that a relatively simple Bhabha scattering polarimeter allows, at energies below 5000 MeV, a more than adequate positron beam longitudinal polarisation measurement by using only the final state electrons. It is further shown that out of the three, 10, 250 or 5000 MeV positron beam energy locations, where the polarisationmeasurement in the TESLA linear collider can be performed, the 250 MeV …
Jet reconstruction is critical for the precision measurement of Higgs boson properties and the electroweak observables at the CEPC. We analyze the jet energy and angular responses of benchmark 2- and 4-jet processes with fully simulated samples with the CEPC baseline detector geometry. We observe a relative resolution of 3.5$\%$ and 1$\%$ on the jet energy and angular measurement for jets in the detector barrel region ($|cosθ| < 0.6$) with energy greater than 60 GeV. Meanwhile, the jet energy/angular scale can be controlled within 0.5/0.01$\%$. The differential dependences of the jet response …
Various Higgs factories are proposed to study the Higgs boson precisely and systematically in a model-independent way. In this study, the Particle Flow Network and ParticleNet techniques are used to classify the Higgs decays into multi-categories and the ultimate goal is to realize an "end-to-end" analysis. A Monte Carlo simulation study is performed to demonstrate the feasibility, and the performance looks rather promising. This result could be the basis of a "one-shop" analysis to measure all the branching fractions of the Higgs decays simultaneously.
Non-$D\bar{D}$ decay $\psppto \rhopi$ is searched for using a data sample of $(17.3\pm 0.5) pb^{-1}$ taken at the center-of-mass energy of 3.773 GeV by the BESII detector at the BEPC. No $\rhopi$ signal is observed, and the upper limit of the cross section is measured to be $σ(\EETO \rhopi)<6.0 pb$ at 90% C. L. Considering the interference between the continuum amplitude and the $\pspp$ resonance amplitude, the branching fraction of $\pspp$ decays to $ρπ$ is determined to be $\BR(\pspp\raρπ)\in(6.0\times10^{-6}, 2.4\times10^{-3})$ at 90% C. L. This is in agreement with the prediction of the $S…
The discovery of a Higgs-like boson with mass near 126 GeV, at the LHC, has reignited interest in future energy frontier colliders. We propose here a proton-proton (pp) collider in a 100 km ring, with center of mass (CM) energy of ~100 TeV which would have substantial discovery potential for new heavy particles and new physics beyond the Standard Model. In the case that LHC experiments have already found exotic resonances or heavy "partner" particles, this collider could fill out the "tower" of resonances (thus e.g. confirming an extra dimension) or the full suite of partner particles (e.g. fo…
The performance of a scintillating fiber (2mm diameter) position sensitive detector ($4.8 \times 4.8$ cm$^2$ active area) for the single bremstrahlung luminosity monitor at the VEPP-2M electron-positron collider in Novosibirsk, Russia is described. Custom electronics is triggered by coincident hits in the X and Y planes of 24 fibers each, and reduces 64 PMT signals to a 10 bit (X,Y) address. Hits are accumulated (10 kHz) in memory and display (few Hz) the VEPP-2M collision vertex. Fitting the strongly peaked distribution ( $\sim$ 3-4 mm at 1.6m from the collision vertex of VEPP-2M ) to the exp…
A brief review of the background for experiments at future electron-positron linear colliders is done. Two sources of background are discussed: the beam delivery system and the interaction point. The abundance of background muons, neutrons, photons and electron-positron pairs is quoted for different sub-detectors and both background sources. The background caused by the beamstrahlung is described in more detail. Space distributions are sketched and the impact on calorimeters is discussed for the background neutrons.
The design of a future multi-TeV muon collider needs new ideas to overcome the technological challenges related to muon production, cooling, accumulation and acceleration. In this paper a layout of a positron driven muon source known as the Low EMittance Muon Accelerator (LEMMA) concept is presented. The positron beam, stored in a ring with high energy acceptance and low emittance, is extracted and driven to a multi-target system, to produce muon pairs at threshold. This solution alleviates the issues related to the power deposited and the integrated Peak Energy Density Deposition (PEDD) on th…
We present a Circular Energy Recovery Collider (CERC) as an alternative approach for a high-energy high-luminosity electron-positron collider to current designs for high-energy electron-positron colliders either based on two storage rings with 100 km circumference or two large linear accelerators. Using Energy Recovery Linacs (ERL) located in the same-size 100 km tunnel would allow a large reduction of the beam energy losses, and therefore a reduction of the power consumption, while providing higher luminosity. It also opens a path for extending the center-of-mass (CM) energy to 500 GeV, which…
Detectors at future $e^+e^-$ colliders need special calorimeters in the very forward region for a fast estimate and precise measurement of the luminosity, to improve the hermeticity and mask the central tracking detectors from backscattered particles. In our concept, two compact calorimeters are foreseen, LumiCal and BeamCal. Both are designed as sandwich calorimeters with very thin sensor planes to keep the Molière radius small, facilitating such the measurement of electron showers in the presence of background. Silicon sensor prototypes and dedicated FE ASICs have been developed and produced…
