The discovery of a Higgs-like boson with mass near 126 GeV, at the LHC, has reignited interest in future energy frontier colliders. We propose here a proton-proton (pp) collider in a 100 km ring, with center of mass (CM) energy of ~100 TeV which would have substantial discovery potential for new heavy particles and new physics beyond the Standard Model. In the case that LHC experiments have already found exotic resonances or heavy "partner" particles, this collider could fill out the "tower" of resonances (thus e.g. confirming an extra dimension) or the full suite of partner particles (e.g. for supersymmetry). The high luminosity of the new collider would enable unique precision studies of the Higgs boson (including Higgs self coupling and rare Higgs decays), and its higher energy would allow more complete measurements of vector boson scattering to help elucidate electroweak symmetry breaking. We also discuss an e+e- collider in the same 100 km ring with CM energies from 90 to 350 GeV. This collider would enable precision electroweak measurements up to the ttbar threshold, and serve as a Higgs factory.
Fermilab will continue to maintain its pre-eminent position in the world of High Energy Physics, with a unique opportunity to make unprecedented studies of the top quark and major discoveries, until the Large Hadron collider (LHC) at CERN becomes operational near the end of the decade. Run II is well underway with major accelerator and detector upgrades since Run I. A program of further upgrades to the accelerator complex will result in an integrated luminosity of 4-8 fb-1 per experiment, by the year 2009.
In the context of the positrons sources studies for the Future Linear Collider, the Accelerator Department at LAL Orsay is involved since several years in different activities both experiments and simulations.
This note presents measurements that support the conclusion that it is feasible to achieve magnetic field values at the level of 5 milliGauss for a cryomodule in a realistic and representative ambient magnetic field environment.
We present the strategy which has been used recently to optimize integrated luminosity at the Fermilab Tevatron proton-antiproton collider. We use a relatively simple model where we keep the proton intensity fixed, use parameters from fits to the luminosity decay of recent stores as a function of initial antiproton intensity (stash size), and vary the stash size to optimize the integrated luminosity per week. The model assumes a fixed rate of antiproton production, that a store is terminated as soon as the target stash size for the next store is reached, and that the only downtime is due to st…
At the end of its operations in 2011, the Fermilab antiproton production complex consisted of a sophisticated target system, three 8-GeV storage rings (namely the Debuncher, the Accumulator and the Recycler), 25 independent multi-GHz stochastic cooling systems, the world's only relativistic electron cooling system and a team of technical experts equal to none. The accelerator complex at Fermilab supported a broad physics program including the Tevatron Collider Run II, neutrino experiments using 8-GeV and 120-GeV proton beams, as well as a test beam facility and other fixed target experiments u…
We discuss a low energy $e^+e^-$ collider for production of the not yet observed ($μ^+μ^-$) bound system (dimuonium). Collider with large crossing angle for $e^+e^-$ beams intersection produces dimuonium with non-zero momentum, therefore, its decay point is shifted from the beam collision area providing effective suppression of the elastic $e^+e^-$ scattering background. The experimental constraints define subsequent collider specifications. We show preliminary layout of the accelerator and obtained main parameters. High luminosity in chosen beam energy range allows to study $π^\pm$ and $η$ -m…
We present here the first direct and detailed measurements of the spatial distribution of the ionizing radiation surrounding a hadron collider experiment. Using data from two different exposures we measure the effect of additional shielding on the radiation field around the Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF). Employing a simple model we parameterize the ionizing radiation field surrounding the detector.
The beam energy measurement system (BEMS) for the upgraded Beijing electron-positron collider BEPC-II is described. The system is based on measuring the energies of Compton back-scattered photons. The relative systematic uncertainty of the electron and positron beam energy determination is estimated as 2 \cdot 10^{-5}. The relative uncertainty of the beam's energy spread is about 6 %.
The physics potential of an e+e- linear collider can be significantly enhanced if both the electron and positron beams are polarised. Low energy running at the Z-resonance or close to the W-pair threshold is particularly attractive with polarised positrons. This note discusses the experimental aspects and physics opportunities of both low energy running and positron polarisation.
A decade ago, a cost analysis was conducted to bore a 233 km circumference Very Large Hadron Collider (VLHC) tunnel passing through Fermilab. Here we outline implementations of $e^+e^-$, $p \bar{p}$, and $μ^+ μ^-$ collider rings in this tunnel using recent technological innovations. The 240 and 500 GeV $e^+e^-$ colliders employ Crab Waist Crossings, ultra low emittance damped bunches, short vertical IP focal lengths, superconducting RF, and low coercivity, grain oriented silicon steel/concrete dipoles. Some details are also provided for a high luminosity 240 GeV $e^+ e^-$ collider and 1.75 TeV…
Positron sources are the key elements for the future and current lepton collider projects such as ILC, CLIC, SuperKEKB, FCC-ee, Muon Collider/LEMMA, etc., introducing challenging critical requirements for high intensity and low emittance beams in order to achieve high luminosity. In fact, due to their large production emittance and constraints given by the target thermal load, the main collider parameters such as the peak and average current, the emittances, the damping time, the repetition frequency and consequently the luminosity are determined by the positron beam characteristics. In this p…
In this publication we collected descriptions of some installations with liquid metals which could be used for high-energy colliders, ILC particularly, for the purposes of targeting, collimation, cooling, collection of secondary particles etc. Some important components of the system with liquid metals, such as pumps, nozzles, windows, and the fluid dynamics in the Lithium lens are described also.
The Tevatron proton-antiproton collider at Fermilab continues operation as the world's highest energy particle accelerator by delivering luminosity at a center-of-mass energy of 1.96 TeV. We review recent performance and plans for the remainder of Run 2.
The beam energy measurement system for the VEPP-2000 electron-positron collider is described. The method of Compton backscattering of $CO$ laser photons on the electron beam is used. The relative systematic uncertainty of the beam energy determination is estimated as 6\cdot10^{-5}. It was obtained through comparison of the results of the beam energy measurements using the Compton backscattering and resonance depolarization methods.
A possible solution to realize a conventional positron source driven by a several-GeV electron beam for the International Linear Collider is proposed. A 300 Hz electron linac is employed to create positrons with stretching pulse length in order to cure target thermal load. ILC requires about 2600 bunches in a train which pulse length is 1 ms. Each pulse of the 300 Hz linac creates about 130 bunches, then 2600 bunches are created in 63 ms. Optimized parameters such as drive beam energy, beam size, and target thickness, are discussed assuming a L-band capture system to maximize the capture effic…
An unprecedented positron average current is required to fit the luminosity demands of future $e^+e^-$ high energy physics colliders. In addition, in order to access precision-frontier physics, these machines require positron polarization to enable exploring the polarization dependence in many HEP processes cross sections, reducing backgrounds and extending the reach of chiral physics studies beyond the standard model. The ILC has a mature plan for the polarized positron source based on conversion in a thin target of circularly polarized gammas generated by passing the main high energy e-beam …
Fermilab's Recycler ring was used as a storage ring for accumulation and subsequent manipulations of 8-GeV antiprotons destined for the Tevatron collider. To satisfy these missions, a unique electron cooling system was designed, developed and successfully implemented. The most important features that distinguish the Recycler cooler from other existing electron coolers are its relativistic energy (it employs a 4.3 MeV, 0.1 A DC electron beam), a weak continuous longitudinal magnetic field in the cooling section (~100 G), and lumped focusing elsewhere. With the termination of the collider operat…
The characteristics of the electron-photon showers initiated by 2 to 10 GeV electrons aligned along the <111>-axis of tungsten crystals are compared with those for the amorphous tungsten . In this energy range, as known, the positron yield at the optimal target thicknesses is larger in a crystal case only by several percent. However, the amount of the energy deposition in a crystal turns out to be considerably (by 20 - 50 %) lower than in an amorphous target providing the same positron yield, while the peak energy-deposition density is approximately of the same magnitude in the both cases.
Project X is a multi-megawatt proton facility being developed to support intensity frontier research in elementary particle physics, with possible applications to nuclear physics and nuclear energy research, at Fermilab. The centerpiece of this program is a superconducting H- linac that will support world leading programs in long baseline neutrino experimentation and the study of rare processes. Based on technology shared with the International Linear Collider (ILC), Project X will provide multi-MW beams at 60-120 GeV from the Main Injector, simultaneous with very high intensity beams at lower…
The performance of a scintillating fiber (2mm diameter) position sensitive detector ($4.8 \times 4.8$ cm$^2$ active area) for the single bremstrahlung luminosity monitor at the VEPP-2M electron-positron collider in Novosibirsk, Russia is described. Custom electronics is triggered by coincident hits in the X and Y planes of 24 fibers each, and reduces 64 PMT signals to a 10 bit (X,Y) address. Hits are accumulated (10 kHz) in memory and display (few Hz) the VEPP-2M collision vertex. Fitting the strongly peaked distribution ( $\sim$ 3-4 mm at 1.6m from the collision vertex of VEPP-2M ) to the exp…
An intense positron sources is a demanding element in the design of future lepton colliders. A crystal-based hybrid positron source could be an alternative to a more conventional scheme based on the electron conversion into positron in a thick amorphous target. The conceptual idea of the hybrid source is to have two separate objects, a photon radiator and a photon-to-positron converter target. In such a scheme an electron beam crosses a thin axially oriented crystal with the emission of a channeling radiation, characterized by a considerably larger amount of photons if compared to Bremsstrahlu…
Various methods of obtaining longitudinally polarized positrons for future linear colliders are reviewed. Special attention is paid to the schemes using circularly polarized high-energy photons for positron production. Most effectively such photons are obtained from electrons passing through a helical undulator or colliding with a circularly polarized laser wave. Spectrum and polarization of radiation emitted during helical motion of electrons are considered in detail. A new simple presentation of known formulas is used to account for the influence of the wave intensity, of the electron-beam a…
In a conventional positron source driven by a few GeV electron beam, a high amount of heat is loaded into a positron converter target to generate intense positrons required by linear colliders, and which would eventually damage the converter target. A hybrid target, composed of a single crystal target as a radiator of intense gamma--rays, and an amorphous converter target placed downstream of the crystal, was proposed as a scheme which could overcome the problem. This paper describes the development of an intense positron source with the hybrid target. A series of experiments on positron genera…
A system for bunch-by-bunch detection of transverse proton and antiproton coherent oscillations in the Tevatron is described. It is based on the signal from a single beam-position monitor located in a region of the ring with large amplitude functions. The signal is digitized over a large number of turns and Fourier-analyzed offline with a dedicated algorithm. To enhance the signal, band-limited noise is applied to the beam for about 1 s. This excitation does not adversely affect the circulating beams even at high luminosities. The device has a response time of a few seconds, a frequency resolu…
In this paper, the feasibility of the electron-positron collider based on plasma accelerator is proved by simulation experiments. Starting from the 17.612cm proton beam provided by SPS (super proton synchrotron), the simulation shows that the long proton beam can form several high quality proton bunches through seeded self-modulation in the first half of the long proton beam in a uniform plasma. Then we use these high-quality bunches to excite the wakefield in a uniform plasma and accelerate witness positrons and witness electrons. The simulation results show that the average energy of witness…
We examine through numerical calculation the collision of counter-propagating trains of optically spaced electron/positron microbunches in a 1 TeV collider scenario for a dielectric laser accelerator (DLA). A time-dependent envelope equation is derived for arbitrary number of bunches in the classical limit, with inclusion of the radiation reaction force (RRF). Example parameters are examined based on a constrained luminosity relation that takes into account the bunch charge for optimal efficiency, material damage limits, and power constraints. We find that for initially identical counter-propa…
Current searches for a dark photon in the mass range below 1 GeV require an electron-positron collider with a luminosity at the level of at least $10^{34}$ cm$^{-2}$s$^{-1}$. The challenge is that, at such low energies, the collider luminosity rapidly drops off due to increase in the beam sizes, strong mutual focusing of the colliding beams, and enhancement of collective effects. Using recent advances in accelerator technology such as the nano-beam scheme of SuperKEK-B, high-current Energy Recovery Linacs (ERL), and magnetized beams, we propose a new configuration of an electron-positron colli…
We briefly outline shorter and longer term physics motivation for constructing a dual, fast-cycling superconducting synchrotron accelerator (DSFMR - Dual Super-Ferric Main Ring) in the Tevatron tunnel at Fermilab. We discuss using this accelerator as a high-intensity dual neutrino beam source for the long-baseline neutrino oscillation search experiments, and also as a fast, dual pre-injector accelerator for the VLHC (Very Large Hadron Collider).
The Recycler Electron Cooler (REC) was the first cooler working at a relativistic energy (gamma = 9.5). It was successfully developed in 1995-2004 and was in operation at Fermilab in 2005-2011, providing cooling of antiprotons in the Recycler ring. After introducing the physics of electron cooling and the REC system, this paper describes measurements carried out to tune the electron beam and optimize its cooling properties. In particular, we discuss the cooling strategy adopted for maximizing the collider integrated luminosity.
We report modeling results for electron cloud buildup and instability in the International Linear Collider positron damping ring. Updated optics, wiggler magnets, and vacuum chamber designs have recently been developed for the 5 GeV, 3.2-km racetrack layout. An analysis of the synchrotron radiation profile around the ring has been performed, including the effects of diffuse and specular photon scattering on the interior surfaces of the vacuum chamber. The results provide input to the cloud buildup simulations for the various magnetic field regions of the ring. The modeled cloud densities thus …
As a part of a feasibility study of using the Fermilab Electron Cooler for a low-energy Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) run at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL), the cooler operation at 1.6 MeV electron beam energy was tested in a short beam line configuration. The main result of the study is that the cooler beam generation system is suitable for BNL needs. In a striking difference with running 4.3 MeV beam, no unprovoked beam recirculation interruptions were observed.
Bruno Touschek's life as a physicist spanned the period from World War II to the 1970s. He was a key figure in the developments of electron-positron colliders, storage rings, and gave important contributions to theoretical high energy physics. Storage rings, initially developed for high energy physics, are being widely used in many countries as synchrotron radiation sources and are a tool for research in physics, chemistry, biology environmental sciences and cultural heritage studies. We describe Touschek's life in Austria, where he was born, Germany, where he participated to the construction …
This project proposes to reuse the DAFNE accelerator complex for producing a high intensity (up to 10^10), high-quality beam of high-energy (up to 500 MeV) positrons for HEP experiments, mainly - but not only - motivated by light dark particles searches. Such a facility would provide a unique source of ultra-relativistic, narrow-band and low-emittance positrons, with a high duty factor, without employing a cold technology, that would be an ideal facility for exploring the existence of light dark matter particles, produced in positron-on-target annihilations into a photon+missing mass, and usin…
Accelerator-based searches for dark matter are aiming for high sensitivity and need an experimental setup with high luminosity. This field of research is often called intensity frontier physics. One of the best motivated portals of interaction between dark matter and ordinary matter is a dark photon which could be observed as a resonance in the invariant mass of the decay products. Electron-positron collisions are known to be the cleanest interaction for such a study. In this paper we propose a scheme for a collider which allows for a luminosity of a few orders of magnitude higher than could b…
Beam cooling enables an increase of peak and average luminosities and significantly expands the discovery potential of colliders; therefore, it is an indispensable component of any modern design. Optical Stochastic Cooling (OSC) is a high-bandwidth, beam-cooling technique that will advance the present state-of-the-art, stochastic cooling rate by more than three orders of magnitude. It is an enabling technology for next-generation, discovery-science machines at the energy and intensity frontiers including hadron and electron-ion colliders. This paper presents the status of our experimental effo…
Beam diagnostics is important to guarantee good quality of beam in particle accelerator. Both the electron and positron run in the tunnel in some modern electron positron colliders such as Circular Electron Positron Collider (CEPC) to be built and Beijing Electron Positron Collider II (BEPC II). To measure the electron and positron beams, picking up of these two different bunches in real time is of notable concern. Because the time interval between adjacent electron and positron bunches is quite small, for example, 6 ns in CEPC, high-speed switch electronics is required. This paper presents th…
A VME-based data acquisition system for beam-loss monitors has been developed and is in use in the Tevatron and Main Injector accelerators at the Fermilab complex. The need for enhanced beam-loss protection when the Tevatron is operating in collider-mode was the main driving force for the new design. Prior to the implementation of the present system, the beam-loss monitor system was disabled during collider operation and protection of the Tevatron magnets relied on the quench protection system. The new Beam-Loss Monitor system allows appropriate abort logic and thresholds to be set over the fu…
