In this paper, we consider solutions of the backward heat equation with Ricci flow on manifolds as a type of infinite dimensional limit of solutions of a wave equation on a larger manifold with an analysis of wavefront set. Specifically, the projection of the solution of the wave equation $ \left(\frac{2t}{N} \cdot \frac{\partial^{2}}{\partial t^{2}} + \frac{tR(t, x)}{N} \frac{\partial}{\partial t} - Δ_{\tilde{g}^{(N)}(t)} \right) u = R(t, x) $ outside its wavefront set onto $ \mathbb{R}_{t} \times M_{x, g(t)} $ solves the backward heat equation $ \partial_{t} u + Δ_{x, g(t)} u = -R(t, x) $ within some appropriate time interval. We discuss this approximation starting from Euclidean case, and then extend to the open Riemannian manifold situation. This idea partially comes from Perelman's original papers in proving Poincaré conjecture as well as Terence Tao's Notes in UCLA.
In this paper, we prove a unique continuation or ``backwards-uniqueness'' theorem for solutions to the Ricci flow. A particular consequence is that the isometry group of a solution cannot expand within the lifetime of the solution.
In this paper, we study the evolving behaviors of the first eigenvalue of Laplace-Beltrami operator under the normalized backward Ricci flow, construct various quantities which are monotonic under the backward Ricci flow and get upper and lower bounds. We prove that in cases where the backward Ricci flow converges to a sub-Riemannian geometry after a proper rescaling, the eigenvalue evolves toward zero.
In this paper, we derive a general evolution formula for possible Harnack quantities. As a consequence, we prove several differential Harnack inequalities for positive solutions of backward heat-type equations with potentials (including the conjugate heat equation) under the Ricci flow. We shall also derive Perelman's Harnack inequality for the fundamental solution of the conjugate heat equation under the Ricci flow.
In this paper we study backward Ricci flow of locally homogeneous geometries of $4$-manifolds which admit compact quotients. We describe the long-term behavior of each class and show that many of the classes exhibit the same behavior near the singular time. In most cases, these manifolds converge to a sub-Riemannian geometry after suitable rescaling.
Let $λ(t)$ be the first eigenvalue of $-Δ+aR\, (a>0)$ under the backward Ricci flow on locally homogeneous 3-manifolds, where $R$ is the scalar curvature. In the Bianchi case, we get the upper and lower bounds of $λ(t)$. In particular, we show that when the the backward Ricci flow converges to a sub-Riemannian geometry after a proper re-scaling, $λ^{+}(t)$ approaches zero, where $λ^{+}(t)=\max\{λ(t),0\}$.
This paper defines a parabolic frequency for solutions of the heat equation on a Ricci flow and proves it's monotonicity along the flow. Frequency monotonicity is known to have many useful consequences; here it is shown to provide a simple proof of backwards uniqueness. For solutions of more general parabolic equations on a Ricci flow, this paper provides bounds on the derivative of the frequency, which similarly imply backwards uniqueness.
In this paper, we study the backward Ricci flow on locally homogeneous 3-manifolds. We describe the long time behavior and show that, typically and after a proper re-scaling, there is convergence to a sub-Riemannian geometry. A similar behavior was observed by the authors in the case of the cross curvature flow.
This paper is concerned with properties of maximal solutions of the Ricci and cross curvature flows on locally homogeneous three-manifolds of type SL(2,R). We prove that, generically, a maximal solution originates at a sub-Riemannian geometry of Heisenberg type. This solves a problem left open in earlier work by two of the authors.
Given a solution of the (backwards) Ricci flow one can construct a so called canonical soliton metric on space-time, introduced by E. Cabezas-Rivas and P. Topping. We observe that for a mean curvature flow within a (backwards) Ricci flow background, the space-time track of the mean curvature flow yields a canonical soliton of the coupled flow within the canonical Ricci soliton. We show that this provides a link between Hamilton's differential Harnack estimate for the mean curvature flow and Hamilton's differential Harnack estimate for the Ricci flow. Moreover the second fundamental form of our…
A coupling by reflection of a time-inhomogeneous diffusion process on a manifold are studied. The condition we assume is a natural time-inhomogeneous extension of lower Ricci curvature bounds. In particular, it includes the case of backward Ricci flow. As in time-homogeneous cases, our coupling provides a gradient estimate of the diffusion semigroup which yields the strong Feller property. To construct the coupling via discrete approximation, we establish the convergence in law of geodesic random walks as well as a uniform non-explosion type estimate.
In this paper, we derive a Sobolev inequality along an extended Ricci flow and prove a point-wise Guassian type bound for the fundamental solutions of the conjugate heat equation under the flow.
In this paper, we study how to get the Ricci expanders from W+-functional through the heat kernel estimate of the conjugate heat equation to the type III singularity of Ricci flow. The Gaussian upper and lower bounds are established for the related heat kernel in accordance to the interesting work of Cao-Zhang for the type I Rici flow.
In this note we obtain local derivative estimates of Shi-type for the heat equation coupled to the Ricci flow. As applications, in part combining with Kuang's work, we extend some results of Zhang and Bamler-Zhang including distance distortion estimates and a backward pseudolocality theorem for Ricci flow on compact manifolds to the noncompact case.
We prove a Davies type double integral estimate for the heat kernel $H(y,t;x,l)$ under the Ricci flow. As a result, we give an affirmative answer to a question proposed by Chow etc.. Moreover, we apply the Davies type estimate to provide a new proof of the Gaussian upper and lower bounds of $H(y,t;x,l)$ which were first shown by Chau-Tam-Yu.
In this paper we analyze the behavior of the distance function under Ricci flows whose scalar curvature is uniformly bounded. We will show that on small time-intervals the distance function is $\frac12$-Hölder continuous in a uniform sense. This implies that the distance function can be extended continuously up to the singular time.
In this paper we analyze Ricci flows on which the scalar curvature is globally or locally bounded from above by a uniform or time-dependent constant. On such Ricci flows we establish a new time-derivative bound for solutions to the heat equation. Based on this bound, we solve several open problems: 1. distance distortion estimates, 2. the existence of a cutoff function, 3. Gaussian bounds for heat kernels, and, 4. a backward pseudolocality theorem, which states that a curvature bound at a later time implies a curvature bound at a slightly earlier time. Using the backward pseudolocality theorem…
The paper considers a manifold $M$ evolving under the Ricci flow and establishes a series of gradient estimates for positive solutions of the heat equation on $M$. Among other results, we prove Li-Yau-type inequalities in this context. We consider both the case where $M$ is a complete manifold without boundary and the case where $M$ is a compact manifold with boundary. Applications of our results include Harnack inequalities for the heat equation on $M$.
We provide a quick overview of various calculus tools and of the main results concerning the heat flow on compact metric measure spaces, with applications to spaces with lower Ricci curvature bounds. Topics include the Hopf-Lax semigroup and the Hamilton-Jacobi equation in metric spaces, a new approach to differentiation and to the theory of Sobolev spaces over metric measure spaces, the equivalence of the L^2-gradient flow of a suitably defined "Dirichlet energy" and the Wasserstein gradient flow of the relative entropy functional, a metric version of Brenier's Theorem, and a new (stronger) d…
We prove Gaussian type bounds for the fundamental solution of the conjugate heat equation evolving under the Ricci flow. As a consequence, for dimension 4 and higher, we show that the backward limit of type I $κ$-solutions of the Ricci flow must be a non-flat gradient shrinking Ricci soliton. This extends Perelman's previous result on backward limits of $κ$-solutions in dimension 3, in which case that the curvature operator is nonnegative (follows from Hamilton-Ivey curvature pinching estimate). The Gaussian bounds that we obtain on the fundamental solution of the conjugate heat equation under…
We study the Ricci flow for initial metrics which are C^0 small perturbations of the Euclidean metric on R^n. In the case that this metric is asymptotically Euclidean, we show that a Ricci harmonic map heat flow exists for all times, and converges uniformly to the Euclidean metric as time approaches infinity. In proving this stability result, we introduce a monotone integral quantity which measures the deviation of the evolving metric from the Euclidean metric. We also investigate the convergence of the diffeomorphisms relating Ricci harmonic map heat flow to Ricci flow.
We prove several differential Harnack inequalities for positive solutions to nonlinear backward heat equations with different potentials coupled with the Ricci flow. We also derive an interpolated Harnack inequality for the nonlinear heat equation under the $\varepsilon$-Ricci flow on a closed surface. These new Harnack inequalities extend the previous differential Harnack inequalities for linear heat equations with potentials under the Ricci flow.
In this paper, we systematically study the heat kernel of the Ricci flows induced by Ricci shrinkers. We develop several estimates which are much sharper than their counterparts in general closed Ricci flows. Many classical results, including the optimal Logarithmic Sobolev constant estimate, the Sobolev constant estimate, the no-local-collapsing theorem, the pseudo-locality theorem and the strong maximum principle for curvature tensors, are essentially improved for Ricci flows induced by Ricci shrinkers. Our results provide many necessary tools to analyze short time singularities of the Ricci…
This paper is the sequel to our study of heat kernels on Ricci shrinkers in \cite{LW20}. In this paper, we improve many estimates in \cite{LW20} and extend the recent progress of Bamler \cite{Bam20a}. In particular, we drop the compactness and curvature boundedness assumptions and show that the theory of $\IF$-convergence holds naturally on any Ricci flows induced by Ricci shrinkers.
The aim of this article is to provide a Liouville theorem for heat equation along ancient super Ricci flow. We formulate such a Liouville theorem under a growth condition concerning Perelman's reduced distance.
On gradient shrinking Ricci solitons, we observe that the study of Schrödinger heat kernel seems to be more natural than the classical heat kernel. In this paper we derive sharp Gaussian upper bounds for the Schrödinger heat kernel on complete gradient shrinking Ricci solitons. As applications, we prove sharp upper bounds for the Green's function of the Schrödinger operator. We also prove sharp lower bounds for eigenvalues of the Schrödinger operator. These sharp cases are all achieved at Euclidean Gaussian shrinking Ricci solitons.
We show that the linear trace Harnack quadratic on a steady gradient Ricci soliton satisfies the heat equation. Similar result holds for shrinkers. We also present an interpolation between Perelman's and Cao--Hamilton's Harnacks on a steady soliton.
We prove the existence of Sobolev extension operators for certain uniform classes of domains in a Riemannian manifold with an explicit uniform bound on the norm depending only on the geometry near their boundaries. We use this quantitative estimate to obtain uniform Neumann heat kernel upper bounds and gradient estimates for positive solutions of the Neumann heat equation assuming integral Ricci curvature conditions and geometric conditions on the boundary. Those estimates also imply quantitative lower bounds on the first Neumann eigenvalue of the considered domains.
In this paper we establish new geometric and analytic bounds for Ricci flows, which will form the basis of a compactness, partial regularity and structure theory for Ricci flows in [Bam20a, Bam20b]. The bounds are optimal up to a constant that only depends on the dimension and possibly a lower scalar curvature bound. In the special case in which the flow consists of Einstein metrics, these bounds agree with the optimal bounds for spaces with Ricci curvature bounded from below. Moreover, our bounds are local in the sense that if a bound depends on the collapsedness of the underlying flow, then …
We introduce a flow of Kähler structures over Fano manifolds with formal limit at infinite time a Kähler-Ricci soliton. This flow correspond to a Perelman's modified backward Kähler-Ricci type flow that we call Soliton-Kähler-Ricci flow. It can be generated by the Soliton-Ricci flow. We assume that the Soliton-Ricci flow exists for all times and the Bakry-Emery-Ricci tensor preserve a positive uniform lower bound with respect to the evolving metric. In this case we show that the corresponding Soliton-Kähler-Ricci flow converges exponentially fast to a Kähler-Ricci soliton.
In this note we prove the backwards uniqueness of the mean curvature flow for (codimension one) hypersurfaces in a Euclidean space. More precisely, let $F_t, \widetilde{F}_t:M^n \rightarrow \mathbb{R}^{n+1}$ be two complete solutions of the mean curvature flow on $M^n \times [0,T]$ with bounded second fundamental forms. Suppose $F_T=\widetilde{F}_T$, then $F_t=\widetilde{F}_t$ on $M^n \times [0,T]$. This is an analog of a result of Kotschwar on the Ricci flow.
In this paper we prove first order differential Harnack estimates for positive solutions of the heat equation (in the sense of distributions) under closed Finsler-Ricci flows. We assume mild non-linearities (in terms of the Chern connection, $\mathbf{S}-$curvature and Hessian) and suitable Ricci curvature bounds throughout the flow. One of the key tools we use is the Bochner identity for Finsler structures proved by Ohta and Sturm.
This article shows that under locally uniformly integral bounds of the negative part of Ricci curvature the heat kernel admits a Gaussian upper bound for small times. This provides general assumptions on the geometry of a manifold such that certain function spaces are in the Kato class. Additionally, the results imply bounds on the first Betti number.
On a complete non-compact gradient shrinking Ricci soliton, we prove the analyticity in time for smooth solutions of the heat equation with quadratic exponential growth in the space variable. This growth condition is sharp. As an application, we give a necessary and sufficient condition on the solvability of the backward heat equation in a class of functions with quadratic exponential growth on shrinkers.
In this paper, we first derive a Sobolev inequality along the harmonic-Ricci flow. We then prove a linear parabolic estimate based on the Sobolev inequality and Moser's iteration. As an application, we will obtain an upper bound estimate for the heat kernel under the flow.
We study the Ricci flow of the four-parameter family of Sp(n+1)-invariant metrics on spheres. We determine their forward behaviour and also classify ancient solutions. In doing so, we exhibit a new one-parameter family of ancient solutions on spheres. These (non-isometric) ancient solutions all have a larger isometry group, namely Sp(n+1)Sp(1), Sp(n+1)U(1), or U(2n+2). Two ancient solutions are non-collapsed and converge, under the backwards flow, to Jensen's second Einstein metric. One solution parametrizes the well known Berger metrics. The rest are new and collapse, under a rescaling of the…
We study the fast diffusion equation (FDE) with a linear forcing term under the Ricci flow on complete manifolds with bounded curvature and nonnegative curvature operator. We prove Aronson-Bénilan and Li-Yau-Hamilton type differential Harnack estimates for positive solutions of the FDE. In addition, we use similar method to prove certain Li-Yau-Hamilton estimates for the heat equation and conjugate heat equation which extend those obtained by X. Cao and R. Hamilton, X. Cao, and S. Kuang and Q. Zhang to noncompact setting.
Following Donaldson's oppenness theorem on deforming a conical Kähler-Einstein metric, we prove a parabolic Schauder-type estimate with respect to conical metrics. As a corollary, we show that the conical Kähler-Ricci Flow exists for short time. The key is to establish the relevant heat kernel estimates, where we use the Weber's formula on Bessel function of the second kind and Carslaw's heat kernel representation in \cite{Car}.
In this note, we prove the existence of weak solutions of the Chern-Ricci flow through blow downs of exceptional curves, as well as backwards smooth convergence away from the exceptional curves on compact complex surfaces. The smoothing property for the Chern-Ricci flow is also obtained on compact Hermitian manifolds of dimension n under a mild assumption.
The paper establishes a series of gradient estimates for positive solutions to the heat equation on a manifold $M$ evolving under the Ricci flow, coupled with the harmonic map flow between $M$ and a second manifold $N$. We prove Li-Yau type Harnack inequalities and we consider the cases when $M$ is a complete manifold without boundary and when $M$ is compact, without boundary.
We present a new relation between the short time behavior of the heat flow, the geometry of optimal transport and the Ricci flow. We also show how this relation can be used to define an evolution of metrics on non-smooth metric measure spaces with Ricci curvature bounded from below.
We give a proof of Gaussian upper bound for the heat kernel coupled with the Ricci ow. Previous proofs by Lei Ni [5] use Harnack inequality and doubling volume property, also the recent proof by Zhang and Cao [6] uses Sobolev type inequality that is conserved along Ricci ow. We will use a horizontal coupling of curve [1] Arnaudon Thalmaier, C., in order to generalize Harnack inequality with power -for inhomogeneous heat equation - introduced by F.Y Wang. In the case of Ricci ow, we will derive on-diagonal bound of the Heat kernel along Ricci ow (and also for the usual Heat kernel on complete M…
The paper considers the Ricci flow, coupled with the harmonic map flow between two manifolds. We derive estimates for the fundamental solution of the corresponding conjugate heat equation and we prove an analog of Perelman's differential Harnack inequality. As an application, we find a connection between the entropy functional and the best constant in the Sobolev imbedding theorem in $\mathbb{R}^n$.
