Error correction codes are an integral part of communication applications, boosting the reliability of transmission. The optimal decoding of transmitted codewords is the maximum likelihood rule, which is NP-hard due to the curse of dimensionality. For practical realizations, sub-optimal decoding algorithms are employed; yet limited theoretical insights prevent one from exploiting the full potential of these algorithms. One such insight is the choice of permutation in permutation decoding. We present a data-driven framework for permutation selection, combining domain knowledge with machine learning concepts such as node embedding and self-attention. Significant and consistent improvements in the bit error rate are introduced for all simulated codes, over the baseline decoders. To the best of the authors' knowledge, this work is the first to leverage the benefits of the neural Transformer networks in physical layer communication systems.
A novel permutation decoding method for Reed-Muller codes is presented. The complexity and the error correction performance of the suggested permutation decoding approach are similar to that of the recursive lists decoder. It is demonstrated that the proposed decoding technique can take advantage of several early termination methods leading to a significant reduction of the operations number required for the decoding, with the error correction performance being the same.
Reed-Muller (RM) and polar codes are a class of capacity-achieving channel coding schemes with the same factor graph representation. Low-complexity decoding algorithms fall short in providing a good error-correction performance for RM and polar codes. Using the symmetric group of RM and polar codes, the specific decoding algorithm can be carried out on multiple permutations of the factor graph to boost the error-correction performance. However, this approach results in high decoding complexity. In this paper, we first derive the total number of factor graph permutations on which the decoding c…
In this paper we describe a variation of the classical permutation decoding algorithm that can be applied to any affine-invariant code with respect to certain type of information sets. In particular, we can apply it to the family of first-order Reed-Muller codes with respect to the information sets introduced in [2]. Using this algortihm we improve considerably the number of errors we can correct in comparison with the known results in this topic.
We introduce the notion of the stopping redundancy hierarchy of a linear block code as a measure of the trade-off between performance and complexity of iterative decoding for the binary erasure channel. We derive lower and upper bounds for the stopping redundancy hierarchy via Lovasz's Local Lemma and Bonferroni-type inequalities, and specialize them for codes with cyclic parity-check matrices. Based on the observed properties of parity-check matrices with good stopping redundancy characteristics, we develop a novel decoding technique, termed automorphism group decoding, that combines iterativ…
An alternative permutation decoding method is described which can be used for any binary systematic encoding scheme, regardless whether the code is linear or not. Thus, the method can be applied to some important codes such as Z2Z4-linear codes, which are binary and, in general, nonlinear codes in the usual sense. For this, it is proved that these codes allow a systematic encoding scheme. As a particular example, this permutation decoding method is applied to some Hadamard Z2Z4-linear codes.
A frequency permutation array (FPA) of length $n=mλ$ and distance $d$ is a set of permutations on a multiset over $m$ symbols, where each symbol appears exactly $λ$ times and the distance between any two elements in the array is at least $d$. FPA generalizes the notion of permutation array. In this paper, under the distance metric $\ell_\infty$-norm, we first prove lower and upper bounds on the size of FPA. Then we give a construction of FPA with efficient encoding and decoding capabilities. Moreover, we show our design is locally decodable, i.e., we can decode a message bit by reading at most…
Polar codes are a channel coding scheme for the next generation of wireless communications standard (5G). The belief propagation (BP) decoder allows for parallel decoding of polar codes, making it suitable for high throughput applications. However, the error-correction performance of polar codes under BP decoding is far from the requirements of 5G. It has been shown that the error-correction performance of BP can be improved if the decoding is performed on multiple permuted factor graphs of polar codes. However, a different BP decoding scheduling is required for each factor graph permutation w…
A new permutation decoding approach for polar codes is presented. The complexity of the algorithm is similar to that of a successive cancellation list (SCL) decoder, while it can be implemented with the latency of a successive cancellation decoder. As opposed to the SCL algorithm, the sorting operation is not used in the proposed method. It is shown that the error correction performance of the algorithm is similar to that of the SCL decoder for polar codes. Moreover, a new construction aiming to improve the error correction performance of polar codes under the proposed algorithm is presented.
A novel recursive list decoding (RLD) algorithm for Reed-Muller (RM) codes based on successive permutations (SP) of the codeword is presented. A low-complexity SP scheme applied to a subset of the symmetry group of RM codes is first proposed to carefully select a good codeword permutation on the fly. Then, the proposed SP technique is integrated into an improved RLD algorithm that initializes different decoding paths with random codeword permutations, which are sampled from the full symmetry group of RM codes. Finally, efficient latency and complexity reduction schemes are introduced that virt…
Permutation decoding gained recent interest as it can exploit the symmetries of a code in a parallel fashion. Moreover, it has been shown that by viewing permuted polar codes as polar subcodes, the set of usable permutations in permutation decoding can be increased. We extend this idea to pre-transformed polar codes, such as cyclic redundancy check (CRC)-aided polar codes, which previously could not be decoded using permutations due to their lack of automorphisms. Using belief propagation (BP)-based subdecoders, we showcase a performance close to CRC-aided SCL (CA-SCL) decoding. The proposed a…
We investigate the stopping redundancy hierarchy of linear block codes and its connection to permutation decoding techniques. An element in the ordered list of stopping redundancy values represents the smallest number of possibly linearly dependent rows in any parity-check matrix of a code that avoids stopping sets of a given size. Redundant parity-check equations can be shown to have a similar effect on decoding performance as permuting the coordinates of the received codeword according to a selected set of automorphisms of the code. Based on this finding we develop new decoding strategies fo…
Permutation decoding is a technique which involves finding a subset $S$, called PD-set, of the permutation automorphism group of a code $C$ in order to assist in decoding. An explicit construction of $\left \lfloor{\frac{2^m-m-1}{1+m}} \right \rfloor$-PD-sets of minimum size $\left \lfloor{\frac{2^m-m-1}{1+m}} \right \rfloor + 1$ for partial permutation decoding for binary linear Hadamard codes $H_m$ of length $2^m$, for all $m\geq 4$, is described. Moreover, a recursive construction to obtain $s$-PD-sets of size $l$ for $H_{m+1}$ of length $2^{m+1}$, from a given $s$-PD-set of the same size f…
Permutation codes were extensively studied in order to correct different types of errors for the applications on power line communication and rank modulation for flash memory. In this paper, we introduce the neural network decoders for permutation codes to correct these errors with one-shot decoding, which treat the decoding as $n$ classification tasks for non-binary symbols for a code of length $n$. These are actually the first general decoders introduced to deal with any error type for these two applications. The performance of the decoders is evaluated by simulations with different error mo…
In this paper we address the problem of selecting factor-graph permutations of polar codes under belief propagation (BP) decoding to significantly improve the error-correction performance of the code. In particular, we formalize the factor-graph permutation selection as the multi-armed bandit problem in reinforcement learning and propose a decoder that acts like an online-learning agent that learns to select the good factor-graph permutations during the course of decoding. We use state-of-the-art algorithms for the multi-armed bandit problem and show that for a 5G polar codes of length 128 wit…
Polar coding solutions demonstrate excellent performance under the list decoding that is challenging to implement in hardware due to the path sorting operations. As a potential solution to this problem, permutation decoding recently became a hot research topic. However, it imposes more constraints on the code structure. In this paper, we study the structural properties of Arikan's polar codes. It is known that they are invariant under lower-triangular affine permutations among others. However, those permutations are not useful in the context of permutation decoding. We show that, unfortunately…
Iterative decoding techniques have gain popularity due to their performance and their application in most communications systems. In this paper, we present a new application of our iterative decoder on the GPCB (Generalized Parallel Concatenated Block codes) which uses cyclic permutations. We introduce a new variant of the component decoder. After extensive simulation; the obtained result is very promising compared with several existing methods. We evaluate the effects of various parameters component codes, interleaver size, block size, and the number of iterations. Three interesting results a…
A novel permuted fast successive-cancellation list decoding algorithm with fast Hadamard transform (FHT-FSCL) is presented. The proposed decoder initializes $L$ $(L\ge1)$ active decoding paths with $L$ random codeword permutations sampled from the full symmetry group of the codes. The path extension in the permutation domain is carried out until the first constituent RM code of order $1$ is visited. Conventional path extension of the successive-cancellation list decoder is then utilized in the information bit domain. The simulation results show that for a RM code of length $512$ with $46$ info…
Recursive list decoding of Reed-Muller (RM) codes, with moderate list size, is known to approach maximum-likelihood (ML) performance of short length $(\leq 256)$ RM codes. Recursive decoding employs the Plotkin construction to split the original code into two shorter RM codes with different rates. In contrast to the standard approach which decodes the lower-rate code first, the method in this paper decodes the higher-rate code first. This modification enables an efficient permutation-based decoding technique, with permutations being selected on the fly from the automorphism group of the code u…
Linear constraints for a matrix polytope with no fractional vertex are investigated as intersecting research among permutation codes, rank modulations, and linear programming methods. By focusing the discussion to the block structure of matrices, new classes of such polytopes are obtained from known small polytopes. This concept, called "consolidation", is applied to find a new compact graph which is known as an approach for the graph isomorphism problem. Encoding and decoding algorithms for our new permutation codes are obtained from existing algorithms for small polytopes. The minimum distan…
In this paper we propose an enhanced soft cancellation (SCAN) decoder for polar codes based on decoding stages permutation. The proposed soft cancellation list (SCANL) decoder runs $L$ independent SCAN decoders, each one relying on a different permuted factor graph. The estimated bits are selected among the $L$ candidates through a dedicated metric provided by the decoders. Furthermore, we introduce an early-termination scheme reducing decoding latency without affecting error correction performance. We investigate the error-correction performance of the proposed scheme under various combinatio…
Recently, a permutation-based successive cancellation (PSC) decoding framework for polar codes attaches much attention. It decodes several permuted codewords with independent successive cancellation (SC) decoders. Its latency thus can be reduced to that of SC decoding. However, the PSC framework is ineffective for permutations falling into the lower-triangular affine (LTA) automorphism group, as they are invariant under SC decoding. As such, a larger block lower-triangular affine (BLTA) group that contains SC-variant permutations was discovered for decreasing polar codes. But it was unknown wh…
In this paper, we propose an analysis of the automorphism group of polar codes, with the scope of designing codes tailored for automorphism ensemble (AE) decoding. We prove the equivalence between the notion of decreasing monomial codes and the universal partial order (UPO) framework for the description of polar codes. Then, we analyze the algebraic properties of the affine automorphisms group of polar codes, providing a novel description of its structure and proposing a classification of automorphisms providing the same results under permutation decoding. Finally, we propose a method to list …
In this paper, soft-decision (SD) decoders of permutation trellis code (PTC) with $M$-ary frequency shift keying are designed using three optimization algorithms and presented in four decoding schemes. In a concatenated code such as PTC, the Viterbi decoder for the outer convolutional code provides maximum likelihood decoding. Hence, the error correction performance is dependent on the decoding scheme used for the inner code. Due to the structure of the encoder with the modulation scheme, the channel output can be interpreted as an assignment problem. SD decoding can then be designed according…
A set of linearly constrained permutation matrices are proposed for constructing a class of permutation codes. Making use of linear constraints imposed on the permutation matrices, we can formulate a minimum Euclidian distance decoding problem for the proposed class of permutation codes as a linear programming (LP) problem. The main feature of this class of permutation codes, called LP decodable permutation codes, is this LP decodability. It is demonstrated that the LP decoding performance of the proposed class of permutation codes is characterized by the vertices of the code polytope of the c…
Recursive projection aggregation (RPA) decoding as introduced in [1] is a novel decoding algorithm which performs close to the maximum likelihood decoder for short-length Reed-Muller codes. Recently, an extension to RPA decoding, called sparse multi-decoder RPA (SRPA), has been proposed [2]. The SRPA approach makes use of multiple pruned RPA decoders to lower the amount of computations while keeping the performance loss small compared to RPA decoding. However, the use of multiple sparse decoders again increases the computational burden. Therefore, the focus is on the optimization of sparse sin…
It is well known that spatially coupled (SC) codes with erasure-BP decoding have powerful error correcting capability over memoryless erasure channels. However, the decoding performance of SC-codes significantly degrades when they are used over burst erasure channels. In this paper, we propose band splitting permutations (BSP) suitable for $(l,r,L)$ SC-codes. The BSP splits a diagonal band in a base matrix into multiple bands in order to enhance the span of the stopping sets in the base matrix. As theoretical performance guarantees, lower and upper bounds on the maximal burst correctable lengt…
We consider recursive decoding for Reed-Muller (RM) codes and their subcodes. Two new recursive techniques are described. We analyze asymptotic properties of these algorithms and show that they substantially outperform other decoding algorithms with nonexponential complexity known for RM codes. Decoding performance is further enhanced by using intermediate code lists and permutation procedures. For moderate lengths up to 512, near-optimum decoding with feasible complexity is obtained.
A new class of space time codes with high performance is presented. The code design utilizes tailor-made permutation codes, which are known to have large minimal distances as spherical codes. A geometric connection between spherical and space time codes has been used to translate them into the final space time codes. Simulations demonstrate that the performance increases with the block lengths, a result that has been conjectured already in previous work. Further, the connection to permutation codes allows for moderate complex en-/decoding algorithms.
Owing to its high parallelism, belief propagation (BP) decoding is highly amenable to high-throughput implementations and thus represents a promising solution for meeting the ultra-high peak data rate of future communication systems. However, for polar codes, the error-correcting performance of BP decoding is far inferior to that of the widely used CRC-aided successive cancellation list (SCL) decoding algorithm. To close the performance gap to SCL, BP list (BPL) decoding expands the exploration of candidate codewords through multiple permuted factor graphs (PFGs). From an implementation perspe…
In this paper, we modify polar codes constructed with some 2^t x 2^t polarization kernels to reduce the time complexity of the window decoding. This modification is based on the permutation of the columns of the kernels. This method is applied to some of the kernels constructed in the literature of size 16 and 32, with different error exponents and scaling exponents such as eNBCH kernel. It is shown that this method reduces the complexity of the window decoding significantly without affecting the performance.

This work explores the rate-reliability-complexity limits of the quasi-static K-user multiple access channel (MAC), with or without feedback. Using high-SNR asymptotics, the work first derives bounds on the computational resources required to achieve near-optimal (ML-based) decoding performance. It then bounds the (reduced) complexity needed to achieve any (including suboptimal) diversity-multiplexing performance tradeoff (DMT) performance, and finally bounds the same complexity, in the presence of feedback-aided user selection. This latter effort reveals the ability of a few bits of feedback …
This paper defines cyclic and minimal derivative descendants (DDs) of an extended cyclic code from the derivative of the Mattson-Solomon polynomials, respectively. First, it demonstrates that the cyclic DDs are the same extended cyclic code. It allows us to perform soft-decision decoding for extended cyclic codes based on their cyclic DDs. Then, it proves that the minimal DDs are equivalent codes. It also allows us to perform soft-decision decoding based on the minimal DDs with permutations. Simulation results show that our proposed derivative decoding can be close to the maximum likelihood de…
This paper introduces a class of structured lowdensity parity-check (LDPC) codes whose parity check matrices are arrays of permutation matrices. The permutation matrices are obtained from Latin squares and form a finite field under some matrix operations. They are chosen so that the Tanner graphs do not contain subgraphs harmful to iterative decoding algorithms. The construction of column-weight-three codes is presented. Although the codes are optimized for the Gallager A/B algorithm over the binary symmetric channel (BSC), their error performance is very good on the additive white Gaussian no…
Guessing random additive noise decoding (GRAND) algorithm has emerged as an excellent decoding strategy that can meet both the high reliability and low latency constraints. This paper proposes a successive addition-subtraction algorithm to generate noise error permutations. A noise error patterns generation scheme is presented by embedding the "1" and "0" bursts alternately. Then detailed procedures of the proposed algorithm are presented, and its correctness is also demonstrated through theoretical derivations. The aim of this work is to provide a preliminary paradigm and reference for future…
In this paper, we show that Quasi-Cyclic LDPC codes can efficiently accommodate the hybrid iterative/ML decoding over the binary erasure channel. We demonstrate that the quasi-cyclic structure of the parity-check matrix can be advantageously used in order to significantly reduce the complexity of the ML decoding. This is achieved by a simple row/column permutation that transforms a QC matrix into a pseudo-band form. Based on this approach, we propose a class of QC-LDPC codes with almost ideal error correction performance under the ML decoding, while the required number of row/symbol operations…
This paper discusses bit-level soft decoding of triple-parity Reed-Solomon (RS) codes through automorphism permutation. A new method for identifying the automorphism groups of RS binary images is first developed. The new algorithm runs effectively, and can handle more RS codes and capture more automorphism groups than the existing ones. Utilizing the automorphism results, a new bit-level soft-decision decoding algorithm is subsequently developed for general $(n,n-3,4)$ RS codes. Simulation on $(31,28,4)$ RS codes demonstrates an impressive gain of more than 1 dB at the bit error rate of $10^{-…
Recursive list decoding is considered for Reed-Muller (RM) codes. The algorithm repeatedly relegates itself to the shorter RM codes by recalculating the posterior probabilities of their symbols. Intermediate decodings are only performed when these recalculations reach the trivial RM codes. In turn, the updated lists of most plausible codewords are used in subsequent decodings. The algorithm is further improved by using permutation techniques on code positions and by eliminating the most error-prone information bits. Simulation results show that for all RM codes of length 256 and many subcodes …
An interleaver is a critical component for the channel coding performance of turbo codes. Algebraic constructions are of particular interest because they admit analytical designs and simple, practical hardware implementation. Contention-free interleavers have been recently shown to be suitable for parallel decoding of turbo codes. In this correspondence, it is shown that permutation polynomials generate maximum contention-free interleavers, i.e., every factor of the interleaver length becomes a possible degree of parallel processing of the decoder. Further, it is shown by computer simulations …
This paper studies the complicated interplay of the completion time (as a measure of throughput) and the decoding delay performance in instantly decodable network coded (IDNC) systems over wireless broadcast erasure channels with memory, and proposes two new algorithms that improve the balance between the completion time and decoding delay of broadcasting a block of packets. We first formulate the IDNC packet selection problem that provides joint control of the completion time and decoding delay as a statistical shortest path (SSP) problem. However, since finding the optimal packet selection p…
In this paper we deal with polar code automorphisms that are beneficial under low-latency automorphism ensemble (AE) decoding, and we propose polar code designs that have such automorphisms. Successive-cancellation (SC) decoding and thus SC-based AE decoding are invariant with respect to the only known polar code automorphisms, namely those of the lower-triangular affine (LTA) group. To overcome this problem, we provide methods to determine whether a given polar code has non-LTA automorphisms and to identify such automorphisms. Building on this, we design specific polar codes that admit automo…

An efficient scheme to increase the performance of polar codes at short and moderate block lengths is a concatenation of CRC code and a polar code. In order to obtain better result of the concatenation, a CRC code with best error control performance among all CRC codes with a fixed number of check bits has to be used. In this work we investigate CRC codes of 11 to 19 parity bits and determine those of them which have maximum minimum distance at any length it can be used. For CRC codes of 24 parity bits we were not able to perform complete search and we present the best obtained results. The in…
Quantum deletions, which are harder to correct than erasure errors, occur in many realistic settings. It is therefore pertinent to develop quantum coding schemes for quantum deletion channels. To date, not much is known about which explicit quantum error correction codes can combat quantum deletions. We note that {\em any} permutation-invariant quantum code that has a distance of $t+1$ can correct $t$ quantum deletions for any positive integer $t$ in both the qubit and the qudit setting. Leveraging on coding properties of permutation-invariant quantum codes under erasure errors, we derive corr…
We investigate joint power allocation and decoding order selection (PA-DOS) aimed at enhancing the outage performance of non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) systems. By considering the diverse target rates of users, new important properties of NOMA are revealed: When users' target rates satisfy certain conditions, the channel state information (CSI) is not required by PA-DOS to minimize the system outage probability, and different users' outage probabilities can be minimized simultaneously; When such conditions are not satisfied, the opposite situation occurs. Following these properties, two…
A novel and efficient neural decoder algorithm is proposed. The proposed decoder is based on the neural Belief Propagation algorithm and the Automorphism Group. By combining neural belief propagation with permutations from the Automorphism Group we achieve near maximum likelihood performance for High Density Parity Check codes. Moreover, the proposed decoder significantly improves the decoding complexity, compared to our earlier work on the topic. We also investigate the training process and show how it can be accelerated. Simulations of the hessian and the condition number show why the learni…
Permutation Entropy (PE) has been shown to be a useful tool for time series analysis due to its low computational cost and noise robustness. This has drawn for its successful application in many fields. Some of these include damage detection, disease forecasting, and financial volatility analysis. However, to successfully use PE, an accurate selection of two parameters is needed: the permutation dimension $n$ and embedding delay $τ$. These parameters are often suggested by experts based on a heuristic or by a trial and error approach. unfortunately, both of these methods can be time-consuming …
