Let $H$ be a Hilbert space and $H_1,...,H_n$ be closed subspaces of $H$. Denote by $P_k$ the orthogonal projection onto $H_k$, $k=1,2,...,n$. Following Patrick L. Combettes and Noli N. Reyes, we will say that the system of subspaces $H_1,...,H_n$ possesses the inverse best approximation property (IBAP) if for arbitrary elements $x_1\in H_1,...,x_n\in H_n$ there exists an element $x\in H$ such that $P_k x=x_k$ for all $k=1,2,...,n$. We provide various new necessary and sufficient conditions for a system of $n$ subspaces to possess the IBAP. Using the main characterization theorem, we study properties of the systems of subspaces which possess the IBAP, obtain a sufficient condition for a system of subspaces to possess the IBAP, and provide examples of systems of subspaces which possess the IBAP.
These results are applied to a problem of probability theory. Let $(Ω,\mathcal{F},μ)$ be a probability space and $\mathcal{F}_1,...,\mathcal{F}_n$ be sub-$σ$-algebras of $\mathcal{F}$. We will say that the collection $\mathcal{F}_1,...,\mathcal{F}_n$ possesses the inverse marginal property (IMP) if for arbitrary random variables $ξ_1,...,ξ_n$ such that (1) $ξ_k$ is $\mathcal{F}_k$-measurable, $k=1,2,...,n$; (2) $E|ξ_k|^2<\infty$, $k=1,2,...,n$; (3) $Eξ_1=Eξ_2=...=Eξ_n$, there exists a random variable $ξ$ such that $E|ξ|^2<\infty$ and $E(ξ|\mathcal{F}_k)=ξ_k$ for all $k=1,2,...,n$. We will show that a collection of sub-$σ$-algebras possesses the IMP if and only if the system of corresponding marginal subspaces possesses the IBAP. We consider two examples; in the first example $Ω=\mathbb{N}$, in the second example $Ω=[a,b)$. For these examples we establish relations between the IMP, the IBAP, closedness of the sum of marginal subspaces and "fast decreasing" of tails of the measure $μ$.
We give necessary and sufficient conditions for the sum of n subspaces of a Hilbert space to be closed. We also present various properties of n-tuples of subspaces with closed sum.
By applying methods of Duhamel algebra and reproducing kernels, we prove that every linear bounded operator on the Hardy-Hilbert space H^{2}(D) has a nontrivial invariant subspace. This solves affirmatively the Invariant Subspace Problem in the Hilbert space.
We study finite systems of subspaces of a complex Hilbert space such that each pair of subspaces satisfies a certain condition as described in the following. For each subspace excepting the first one an angle between this subspace and the first one is fixed. The set of all subspaces excluding the first one is divided into disjoint subsets. Each such subset consists of one or two subspaces. Subspaces from different subsets are orthogonal and orthogonal projections onto subspaces from the same subset commute.
In this note, we describe the backward shift invariant subspaces for a large class of reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces. This class includes in particular de Branges-Rovnyak spaces (the non-extreme case) and the range space of co-analytic Toeplitz operators.
A regular generalized sampling theory in some structured T-invariant subspaces of a Hilbert space H, where T denotes a bounded invertible operator in H, is established in this paper. This is done by walking through the most important cases which generalize the usual sampling settings.
We provide a sufficient condition for a finite number of closed subspaces of a Hilbert space to be linearly independent and their sum to be closed. Under this condition a formula for the orthogonal projection onto the sum is given. We also show that this condition is sharp (in a certain sense).
The translation of an operator is defined by using conjugation with time-frequency shifts. Thus, one can define $Λ$-shift-invariant subspaces of Hilbert-Schmidt operators, finitely generated, with respect to a lattice $Λ$ in $\mathbb{R}^{2d}$. These spaces can be seen as a generalization of classical shift-invariant subspaces of square integrable functions. Obtaining sampling results for these subspaces appears as a natural question that can be motivated by the problem of channel estimation in wireless communications. These sampling results are obtained in the light of the frame theory in a se…
In this article, we briefly describe nearly $T^{-1}$ invariant subspaces with finite defect for a shift operator $T$ having finite multiplicity acting on a separable Hilbert space $\mathcal{H}$ as a generalization of nearly $T^{-1}$ invariant subspaces introduced by Liang and Partington in \cite{YP}. In other words we characterize nearly $T^{-1}$ invariant subspaces with finite defect in terms of backward shift invariant subspaces in vector-valued Hardy spaces by using Theorem 3.5 in \cite{CDP}. Furthermore, we also provide a concrete representation of the nearly $T_B^{-1}$ invariant subspaces…
The concept of translation of an operator allows to consider the analogous of shift-invariant subspaces in the class of Hilbert-Schmidt operators. Thus, we extend the concept of average sampling to this new setting, and we obtain the corresponding sampling formulas. The key point here is the use of the Weyl transform, a unitary mapping between the space of square integrable functions in the phase space $\mathbb{R}^d\times \widehat{\mathbb{R}}^d$ and the Hilbert space of Hilbert-Schmidt operators on $L^2(\mathbb{R}^d)$, which permits to take advantage of some well established sampling results.
Motivated by the Hilbert-space model for quantum mechanics, we define a pre-Hilbert space logic to be a pair $(S,\el)$, where $S$ is a pre-Hilbert space and $\el$ is an orthocomplemented poset of orthogonally closed linear subspaces of $S$, closed w.r.t. finite dimensional perturbations, (i.e. if $M\in\el$ and $F$ is a finite dimensional linear subspace of $S$, then $M+F\in \el$). We study the order topology $τ_o(\el)$ on $\el$ and show that completeness of $S$ can by characterized by the separation properties of the topological space $(\el,τ_o(\el))$. It will be seen that the remarkable lack …
We prove that a Hilbert space frame $\fti$ contains a Riesz basis if every subfamily $\ftj , J \subseteq I ,$ is a frame for its closed span. Secondly we give a new characterization of Banach spaces which do not have any subspace isomorphic to $c_0$. This result immediately leads to an improvement of a recent theorem of Holub concerning frames consisting of a Riesz basis plus finitely many elements.
Given a family of subspaces we investigate existence, quantity and quality of common complements in Hilbert spaces and Banach spaces. In particular we are interested in complements for countable families of closed subspaces of finite codimension. Those families naturally appear in the context of exponential type splittings like the multiplicative ergodic theorem, which recently has been proved in various infinite-dimensional settings. In view of these splittings, we show that common complements with subexponential decay of quality are generic in Hilbert spaces. Moreover, we prove that the exis…
Controlled g-atomic subspace for a bounded linear operator is being presented and a characterization has been given. We give an example of controlled K-g-fusion frame. We construct a new controlled K-g-fusion frame for the Hilbert space H ? X using the controlled K-g-fusion frames of the Hilbert spaces H and X. Several useful resolutions of the identity operator on a Hilbert space using the theory of controlled g-fusion frames have been discussed. Frame operator for a pair of controlled g-fusion Bessel sequences has been introduced.
We construct a weak Hilbert Banach space such that for every block subspace $Y$ every bounded linear operator on Y is of the form D+S where S is a strictly singular operator and D is a diagonal operator. We show that this yields a weak Hilbert space whose block subspaces are not isomorphic to any of their proper subspaces.
We characterize the frames on an infinite dimensional separable Hilbert space that can be projected to a tight frame for an infinite dimensional subspace. A result of Casazza and Leon states that an arbitrary frame for a 2N- or (2N-1)-dimensional Hilbert space can be projected to a tight frame for an N-dimensional subspace. Surprisingly, we demonstrate a large class of frames for infinite dimensional Hilbert spaces which cannot be projected to a tight frame for any infinite dimensional subspace.
We study two subspace systems in a separable infinite-dimensional Hilbert space up to (bounded) isomorphism. One of the main result of this paper is the following: Isomorphism classes of two subspace systems given by graphs of bounded operators are determined by unitarily equivalent classes of the operator ranges and the nullity of the original bounded operators giving graphs. We construct several non-isomorphic examples of two subspace systems in an infinite-dimensional Hilbert space.
Following Davie's example of a Banach space failing the approximation property [D], we show how to construct a Banach space E which is asymptotically Hilbertian and fails the approximation property. Moreover, the space E is shown to be a subspace of a space with an unconditional basis which is ``almost'' a weak Hilbert space and which can be written as the direct sum of two subspaces all of whose subspaces have the approximation property.
If $\left(\h,\langle\cdot,\cdot\rangle\right)$ is a Hilbert space and on it we consider the sesquilinear form $\langle\,W\cdot,\cdot\rangle$ so-called $W$-metric, where $W^{*}=W\in\BH$, and $\ker\,W=\{0\}$, then the space $\left(\h,\langle\,W\cdot,\cdot\rangle\right)$ is called Hilbert space with $W$-metric or simply $W$-space. In this paper we investigate the dynamic of frames of subspace on these spaces, where the sense of dynamics refers to the behavior of frames of subspace in $\h_{W}$ (the completion of $\left(\h,\langle\,W\cdot,\cdot\rangle\right)$) comparing with $\h$ and vice versa. Th…
In the setting of operators on Hilbert spaces, we prove that every quasinilpotent operator has a non-trivial closed invariant subspace if and only if every pair of idempotents with a quasinilpotent commutator has a non-trivial common closed invariant subspace. We also present a geometric characterization of invariant subspaces of idempotents and classify operators that are essentially idempotent.
This paper demonstrates that random, independently chosen equi-dimensional subspaces with a unitarily invariant distribution in a real Hilbert space provide nearly tight, nearly equiangular fusion frames. The angle between a pair of subspaces is measured in terms of the Hilbert-Schmidt inner product of the corresponding orthogonal projections. If the subspaces are selected at random, then a measure concentration argument shows that these inner products concentrate near an average value. Overwhelming success probability for near tightness and equiangularity is guaranteed if the dimension of the…
We study the relative position of four subspaces in a Hilbert space. For any positive integer n, we give an example of exotic indecomposable system of four subspaces in a Hilbert space whose defect is (2n+1)/3. By an exotic system, we mean a system which is not isomorphic to any closed operator system under any permutation of subspaces. We construct the examples by a help of certain nice sequences used by Jiang and Wang in their study of strongly irreducible operators.
We study the relative position of three subspaces in a separable infinite-dimensional Hilbert space. In the finite-dimensional case, Brenner described the general position of three subspaces completely. We extend it to a certain class of three subspaces in an infinite-dimensional Hilbert space. We also give a partial result which gives a condition on a system to have a (dense) decomposition containing a pentagon.
For a shift operator $T$ with finite multiplicity acting on a separable infinite dimensional Hilbert space we represent its nearly $T^{-1}$ invariant subspaces in terms of invariant subspaces under the backward shift. Going further, given any finite Blaschke product $B$, we give a description of the nearly $T_{B}^{-1}$ invariant subspaces for the operator $T_B$ of multiplication by $B$ in a scale of Dirichlet-type spaces.
The relative position of one subfactor of a factor has been proved quite rich since the work of Jones. We shall show that the theory of relative position of several subspaces of a separable infinite-dimensional Hilbert space is also rich. In finite-dimensonal case, Gelfand and Ponomarev gave a complete classification of indecomposable systems of four subspaces. We construct exotic examples of indecomposable systems of four subspaces in infinite-dimensional Hilbert spaces. We extend their Coxeter functors and defect using Fredholm index. There exist close connections with strongly irreducible o…
We describe the structure of the resolvent of the discrete rough truncated Hilbert transform under the critical exponent. This extends the results obtained in [8].
Our aim in this paper is to obtain necessary and sufficient conditions for weighted shift operators on the Hilbert spaces $\ell^{2}(\mathbb Z)$ and $\ell^{2}(\mathbb N)$ to be subspace-transitive, consequently, we show that the Herrero question (D. A. Herrero. Limits of hypercyclic and supercyclic operators, J. Funct. Anal., 99 (1991)179-190) holds true even on a subspace of a Hilbert space, i.e. there exists an operator $T$ such that both $T$ and $T^*$ are subspace-hypercyclic operators for some subspaces. We display the conditions on the direct sum of two invertable bilateral forward weighte…
Let T be a C_{\cdot 0}-contraction on a Hilbert space H and S be a non-trivial closed subspace of H. We prove that S is a T-invariant subspace of H if and only if there exists a Hilbert space D and a partially isometric operator Π: H^2_D(\mathbb{D}) \raro H such that ΠM_z = T Πand that S = ran Π, or equivalently, P_S = ΠΠ^*. As an application we completely classify the shift-invariant subspaces of C_{\cdot 0}-contractive and analytic reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces over the unit disc. Our results also includes the case of weighted Bergman spaces over the unit disk.
Methods of *-representations in Hilbert space are applied to study of systems of $n$ subspaces in a linear space. It is proved that the problem of description of $n$-transitive subspaces in a finite-dimensional linear space is *-wild for $n \geq 5$.
We show that the bilateral shift group on $L^p(\mathbb{R})$ for $p \in (1, \infty) \setminus \{2\}$ provides a counterexample to the inverse generator problem.
In this note, we provide some sufficient and necessary conditions for the core inverse of the perturbed operator to have the simplest possible expression. The results improve the recent work by H. Ma (Optimal perturbation bounds for the core inverse, Appl. Math. Comput. 336 (2018) 176-181.).
In this paper, we study the Hilbert$-$Schmidt frame (HS-frame) theory for separable Hilbert spaces. We first present some characterizations of HS-frames and prove that HS-frames share many important properties with frames. Then, we show how the inverse of the HS-frame operator can be approximated using finite-dimensional methods. Finally, we present a classical perturbation result and prove that HS-frames are stable under small perturbations.
Extending Meshulam's result on the boundedness of orbits of relaxed projections onto affine subspaces from finite to infinite-dimensional Hilbert spaces
This paper is a follow-up contribution to our work [20] where we discussed some invariant subspace results for contractions on Hilbert spaces. Here we extend the results of [20] to the context of n-tuples of bounded linear operators on Hilbert spaces. Let T = (T_1, \ldots, T_n) be a pure commuting co-spherically contractive n-tuple of operators on a Hilbert space \mathcal{H} and \mathcal{S} be a non-trivial closed subspace of \mathcal{H}. One of our main results states that: \mathcal{S} is a joint T-invariant subspace if and only if there exists a partially isometric operator Π\in \mathcal{B}(…
We describe continuity properties of the multivalued inverse of the numerical range map $f_A:x \mapsto \left\langle Ax, x \right\rangle$ associated with a linear operator $A$ defined on a complex Hilbert space $\mathcal{H}$. We prove in particular that $f_A^{-1}$ is strongly continuous at all points of the interior of the numerical range $W(A)$. We give examples where strong and weak continuity fail on the boundary and address special cases such as normal and compact operators.
In this article we explore several aspects concerning to the Moore-Penrose inverse of a bounded linear operator. On the one hand, we study monotonicity properties of the Moore-Penrose inverse with respect to the Löwner, star, minus, sharp and diamond orders. On the other hand, we analyze the validity of the reverse order law, $B^\dagger A^\dagger=(AB)^\dagger$, under hypothesis of operator ranges and also under hypothesis of order operators. Finally, we study the operator $B^\dagger A^\dagger$ as different weighted inverses of $AB$.
In this paper, we answer a question posed in the introduction of \cite{sub hyp} positively, i.e, we show that if $T$ is $\mathcal M$-hypercyclic operator with $\mathcal M$-hypercyclic vector $x$ in a Hilbert space $\mathcal H$, then $P(Orb(T,x))$ is dense in the subspace $\mathcal M$ where $P$ is the orthogonal projection onto $\mathcal M$. Furthermore, we give some relations between ${\mathcal M}^{\perp}$-hypercyclicity and the orthogonal projection onto ${\mathcal M}^{\perp}$. We also give sufficient conditions for a bilateral weighted shift operators on a Hilbert space $\ell^{2}(\mathbb Z)$…
Using the Spectral Theorem for unbounded self-adjoint operators we prove that any countable family of Lagrangian subspaces of a symplectic Hilbert space admits a common complementary Lagrangian.
Wigner's classical theorem on symmetry transformations plays a fundamental role in quantum mechanics. It can be formulated, for example, in the following way: Every bijective transformation on the set L of all 1-dimensional subspaces of a Hilbert space H which preserves the angle between the elements of L is induced by either a unitary or an antiunitary operator on H. The aim of this paper is to extend Wigner's result from the 1-dimensional case to the case of n-dimensional subspaces of H with n fixed.
In this note we prove that the reproducing kernel of a Hilbert space satisfying the division property has integrable form, is locally of trace class, and the Hilbert space itself is a Hilbert space of holomorphic functions.
In this paper, we introduce and study frame of operators in quaternionic Hilbert spaces as a generalization of g frames which in turn generalized various notions like Pseduo frames, bounded quasi-projectors and frame of subspaces (fusion frames) in separable quaternionic Hilbert spaces.
A Hilbert space operator $U$ is called universal (in the sense of Rota) if every Hilbert space operator is similar to a multiple of $U$ restricted to one of its invariant subspaces. It follows that the Invariant Subspace Problem for Hilbert spaces is equivalent to the statement that all minimal invariant subspaces for $U$ are one dimensional. In this article we characterize all linear fractional composition operators $C_ϕ f=f\circϕ$ that have universal translates on both the classical Hardy spaces $H^2(\mathbb{C}_+)$ and $H^2(\mathbb{D})$ of the half-plane and the unit disk respectively. The s…
Pick spaces are a class of reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces that generalize the classical Hardy space and the Drury--Arveson reproducing kernel spaces. We give characterizations of certain contractively included subspaces of Pick spaces. These generalize the characterization of closed invariant subspaces of Trent and McCullough, as well as results for the Drury--Arveson space obtained by Ball, Bolotnikov and Fang.
We present the weighted weak group inverse, which is a new generalized inverse of operators between two Hilbert spaces, introduced to extend weak group inverse for square matrices. Some characterizations and representations of the weighted weak group inverse are investigated. We also apply these results to define and study the weak group inverse for a Hilbert space operator. Using the weak group inverse, we define and characterize various binary relations.
It is shown that the algebra \(L^\infty(μ)\) of all bounded measurable functions with respect to a finite measure \(μ\) is localizing on the Hilbert space \(L^2(μ)\) if and only if the measure \(μ\) has an atom. Next, it is shown that the algebra \(H^\infty({\mathbb D})\) of all bounded analytic multipliers on the unit disc fails to be localizing, both on the Bergman space \(A^2({\mathbb D})\) and on the Hardy space \(H^2({\mathbb D}).\) Then, several conditions are provided for the algebra generated by a diagonal operator on a Hilbert space to be localizing. Finally, a theorem is provided abo…
In this paper, a sufficient condition for the existence of hyperinvariant subspace of compact perturbations of multiplication operators on some Banach spaces is presented. An interpretation of this result for compact perturbations of normal and diagonal operators on Hilbert space is also discussed. An improvement of a result of [FX12] for compact perturbations of diagonal operators is also obtained.
We introduce the notion of a pseudomultiplier of a Hilbert space $\mathcal H$ of functions on a set $Ω$. Roughly, a pseudomultiplier of $\mathcal H$ is a function which multiplies a finite-codimensional subspace of $\mathcal H$ into $\mathcal H$, where we allow the possibility that a pseudomultiplier is not defined on all of $Ω$. A pseudomultiplier of $\mathcal H$ has singularities, which comprise a subspace of $\mathcal H$, and generalize the concept of singularities of an analytic function, even though the elements of $\mathcal H$ need not enjoy any sort of analyticity. We analyse the nature…
Mosic and Djordjevic introduced the notation of the gDMP inverse for Hilbert space operators in [J. Spectr. Theory, 8(2):555-573, 2018] by considering generalized Drazin inverse with the Moore-Penrose inverse. This paper introduces two new classes of inverses: GD1 (generalized Drazin and inner) inverse and 1GD (inner and generalized Drazin) inverse for Hilbert space operators. The existence and uniqueness of the GD1 (also 1GD) inverse are discussed, along with some properties through core-quasinilpotent decomposition and closed range decomposition operator. We further establish a few explicit …
Using Read's construction of operators without non-trivial invariant subspaces/subsets on $\ell_{1}$ or $c_{0}$, we construct examples of operators on a Hilbert space whose set of hypercyclic vectors is "large" in various senses. We give an example of an operator such that the closure of every orbit is a closed subspace, and then, answering a question of D. Preiss, an example of an operator such that the set of its non-hypercyclic vectors is Gauss null. This operator has the property that it is orbit-unicellular, i.e. the family of the closures of its orbits is totally ordered. We also exhibit…
Let X be a real Banach space. We prove that the existence of an injective, positive, symmetric and not strictly singular operator from X into its dual implies that either X admits an equivalent Hilbertian norm or it contains a nontrivially complemented subspace which is isomorphic to a Hilbert space. We also treat the non-symmetric case.
It is proved that a commutative algebra $A$ of operators in a reflexive real Banach space has an invariant subspace if each operator $T\in A$ satisfies the condition $$\|1- \varepsilon T^2\|_e \le 1 + o(\varepsilon) \text{ when } \varepsilon\searrow 0,$$ where $\|\cdot\|_e$ is the essential norm. This implies the existence of an invariant subspace for every commutative family of essentially selfadjoint operators in a real Hilbert space.
A frame is a system of vectors $S$ in Hilbert space $\mathscr{H}$ with properties which allow one to write algorithms for the two operations, analysis and synthesis, relative to $S$, for all vectors in $\mathscr{H}$; expressed in norm-convergent series. Traditionally, frame properties are expressed in terms of an $S$-Gramian, $G_{S}$ (an infinite matrix with entries equal to the inner product of pairs of vectors in $S$); but still with strong restrictions on the given system of vectors in $S$, in order to guarantee frame-bounds. In this paper we remove these restrictions on $G_{S}$, and we obt…
