We present BOFFIN TTS (Bayesian Optimization For FIne-tuning Neural Text To Speech), a novel approach for few-shot speaker adaptation. Here, the task is to fine-tune a pre-trained TTS model to mimic a new speaker using a small corpus of target utterances. We demonstrate that there does not exist a one-size-fits-all adaptation strategy, with convincing synthesis requiring a corpus-specific configuration of the hyper-parameters that control fine-tuning. By using Bayesian optimization to efficiently optimize these hyper-parameter values for a target speaker, we are able to perform adaptation with an average 30% improvement in speaker similarity over standard techniques. Results indicate, across multiple corpora, that BOFFIN TTS can learn to synthesize new speakers using less than ten minutes of audio, achieving the same naturalness as produced for the speakers used to train the base model.
Few-shot speaker adaptation is a specific Text-to-Speech (TTS) system that aims to reproduce a novel speaker's voice with a few training data. While numerous attempts have been made to the few-shot speaker adaptation system, there is still a gap in terms of speaker similarity to the target speaker depending on the amount of data. To bridge the gap, we propose GC-TTS which achieves high-quality speaker adaptation with significantly improved speaker similarity. Specifically, we leverage two geometric constraints to learn discriminative speaker representations. Here, a TTS model is pre-trained fo…

Training neural text-to-speech (TTS) models for a new speaker typically requires several hours of high quality speech data. Prior works on voice cloning attempt to address this challenge by adapting pre-trained multi-speaker TTS models for a new voice, using a few minutes of speech data of the new speaker. However, publicly available large multi-speaker datasets are often noisy, thereby resulting in TTS models that are not suitable for use in products. We address this challenge by proposing transfer-learning guidelines for adapting high quality single-speaker TTS models for a new speaker, usin…
Neural TTS has shown it can generate high quality synthesized speech. In this paper, we investigate the multi-speaker latent space to improve neural TTS for adapting the system to new speakers with only several minutes of speech or enhancing a premium voice by utilizing the data from other speakers for richer contextual coverage and better generalization. A multi-speaker neural TTS model is built with the embedded speaker information in both spectral and speaker latent space. The experimental results show that, with less than 5 minutes of training data from a new speaker, the new model can ach…
We propose Guided-TTS 2, a diffusion-based generative model for high-quality adaptive TTS using untranscribed data. Guided-TTS 2 combines a speaker-conditional diffusion model with a speaker-dependent phoneme classifier for adaptive text-to-speech. We train the speaker-conditional diffusion model on large-scale untranscribed datasets for a classifier-free guidance method and further fine-tune the diffusion model on the reference speech of the target speaker for adaptation, which only takes 40 seconds. We demonstrate that Guided-TTS 2 shows comparable performance to high-quality single-speaker …
Personalizing a speech synthesis system is a highly desired application, where the system can generate speech with the user's voice with rare enrolled recordings. There are two main approaches to build such a system in recent works: speaker adaptation and speaker encoding. On the one hand, speaker adaptation methods fine-tune a trained multi-speaker text-to-speech (TTS) model with few enrolled samples. However, they require at least thousands of fine-tuning steps for high-quality adaptation, making it hard to apply on devices. On the other hand, speaker encoding methods encode enrollment utter…

The diversity of speaker profiles in multi-speaker TTS systems is a crucial aspect of its performance, as it measures how many different speaker profiles TTS systems could possibly synthesize. However, this important aspect is often overlooked when building multi-speaker TTS systems and there is no established framework to evaluate this diversity. The reason behind is that most multi-speaker TTS systems are limited to generate speech signals with the same speaker profiles as its training data. They often use discrete speaker embedding vectors which have a one-to-one correspondence with individ…
Several recently proposed text-to-speech (TTS) models achieved to generate the speech samples with the human-level quality in the single-speaker and multi-speaker TTS scenarios with a set of pre-defined speakers. However, synthesizing a new speaker's voice with a single reference audio, commonly known as zero-shot multi-speaker text-to-speech (ZSM-TTS), is still a very challenging task. The main challenge of ZSM-TTS is the speaker domain shift problem upon the speech generation of a new speaker. To mitigate this problem, we propose adversarial speaker-consistency learning (ASCL). The proposed …

Traditional vocoder-based statistical parametric speech synthesis can be advantageous in applications that require low computational complexity. Recent neural vocoders, which can produce high naturalness, still cannot fulfill the requirement of being real-time during synthesis. In this paper, we experiment with our earlier continuous vocoder, in which the excitation is modeled with two one-dimensional parameters: continuous F0 and Maximum Voiced Frequency. We show on the data of 9 speakers that an average voice can be trained for DNN-TTS, and speaker adaptation is feasible 400 utterances (abou…

Recently, synthesizing personalized speech by text-to-speech (TTS) application is highly demanded. But the previous TTS models require a mass of target speaker speeches for training. It is a high-cost task, and hard to record lots of utterances from the target speaker. Data augmentation of the speeches is a solution but leads to the low-quality synthesis speech problem. Some multi-speaker TTS models are proposed to address the issue. But the quantity of utterances of each speaker imbalance leads to the voice similarity problem. We propose the Target Domain Adaptation Speech Synthesis Network (…
We introduce VANI, a very lightweight multi-lingual accent controllable speech synthesis system. Our model builds upon disentanglement strategies proposed in RADMMM and supports explicit control of accent, language, speaker and fine-grained $F_0$ and energy features for speech synthesis. We utilize the Indic languages dataset, released for LIMMITS 2023 as part of ICASSP Signal Processing Grand Challenge, to synthesize speech in 3 different languages. Our model supports transferring the language of a speaker while retaining their voice and the native accent of the target language. We utilize th…
Expressive text-to-speech has shown improved performance in recent years. However, the style control of synthetic speech is often restricted to discrete emotion categories and requires training data recorded by the target speaker in the target style. In many practical situations, users may not have reference speech recorded in target emotion but still be interested in controlling speech style just by typing text description of desired emotional style. In this paper, we propose a text-based interface for emotional style control and cross-speaker style transfer in multi-speaker TTS. We propose t…

End-to-end neural TTS has shown improved performance in speech style transfer. However, the improvement is still limited by the available training data in both target styles and speakers. Additionally, degenerated performance is observed when the trained TTS tries to transfer the speech to a target style from a new speaker with an unknown, arbitrary style. In this paper, we propose a new approach to seen and unseen style transfer training on disjoint, multi-style datasets, i.e., datasets of different styles are recorded, one individual style by one speaker in multiple utterances. An inverse au…
One-shot voice cloning aims to transform speaker voice and speaking style in speech synthesized from a text-to-speech (TTS) system, where only a shot recording from the target reference speech can be used. Out-of-domain transfer is still a challenging task, and one important aspect that impacts the accuracy and similarity of synthetic speech is the conditional representations carrying speaker or style cues extracted from the limited references. In this paper, we present a novel one-shot voice cloning algorithm called Unet-TTS that has good generalization ability for unseen speakers and styles.…
Recent state-of-the-art neural text-to-speech (TTS) synthesis models have dramatically improved intelligibility and naturalness of generated speech from text. However, building a good bilingual or code-switched TTS for a particular voice is still a challenge. The main reason is that it is not easy to obtain a bilingual corpus from a speaker who achieves native-level fluency in both languages. In this paper, we explore the use of Mandarin speech recordings from a Mandarin speaker, and English speech recordings from another English speaker to build high-quality bilingual and code-switched TTS fo…
Fine-tuning is a popular method for adapting text-to-speech (TTS) models to new speakers. However this approach has some challenges. Usually fine-tuning requires several hours of high quality speech per speaker. There is also that fine-tuning will negatively affect the quality of speech synthesis for previously learnt speakers. In this paper we propose an alternative approach for TTS adaptation based on using parameter-efficient adapter modules. In the proposed approach, a few small adapter modules are added to the original network. The original weights are frozen, and only the adapters are fi…
We aim to characterize how different speakers contribute to the perceived output quality of multi-speaker Text-to-Speech (TTS) synthesis. We automatically rate the quality of TTS using a neural network (NN) trained on human mean opinion score (MOS) ratings. First, we train and evaluate our NN model on 13 different TTS and voice conversion (VC) systems from the ASVSpoof 2019 Logical Access (LA) Dataset. Since it is not known how best to represent speech for this task, we compare 8 different representations alongside MOSNet frame-based features. Our representations include image-based spectrogra…
Learning accent from crowd-sourced data is a feasible way to achieve a target speaker TTS system that can synthesize accent speech. To this end, there are two challenging problems to be solved. First, direct use of the poor acoustic quality crowd-sourced data and the target speaker data in accent transfer will apparently lead to synthetic speech with degraded quality. To mitigate this problem, we take a bottleneck feature (BN) based TTS approach, in which TTS is decomposed into a Text-to-BN (T2BN) module to learn accent and a BN-to-Mel (BN2Mel) module to learn speaker timbre, where neural netw…
In this paper, we present CopyCat2 (CC2), a novel model capable of: a) synthesizing speech with different speaker identities, b) generating speech with expressive and contextually appropriate prosody, and c) transferring prosody at fine-grained level between any pair of seen speakers. We do this by activating distinct parts of the network for different tasks. We train our model using a novel approach to two-stage training. In Stage I, the model learns speaker-independent word-level prosody representations from speech which it uses for many-to-many fine-grained prosody transfer. In Stage II, we…

Transformer-based text to speech (TTS) model (e.g., Transformer TTS~\cite{li2019neural}, FastSpeech~\cite{ren2019fastspeech}) has shown the advantages of training and inference efficiency over RNN-based model (e.g., Tacotron~\cite{shen2018natural}) due to its parallel computation in training and/or inference. However, the parallel computation increases the difficulty while learning the alignment between text and speech in Transformer, which is further magnified in the multi-speaker scenario with noisy data and diverse speakers, and hinders the applicability of Transformer for multi-speaker TTS…
In this paper, we present AISHELL-3, a large-scale and high-fidelity multi-speaker Mandarin speech corpus which could be used to train multi-speaker Text-to-Speech (TTS) systems. The corpus contains roughly 85 hours of emotion-neutral recordings spoken by 218 native Chinese mandarin speakers. Their auxiliary attributes such as gender, age group and native accents are explicitly marked and provided in the corpus. Accordingly, transcripts in Chinese character-level and pinyin-level are provided along with the recordings. We present a baseline system that uses AISHELL-3 for multi-speaker Madarin …
There has been a significant progress in Text-To-Speech (TTS) synthesis technology in recent years, thanks to the advancement in neural generative modeling. However, existing methods on any-speaker adaptive TTS have achieved unsatisfactory performance, due to their suboptimal accuracy in mimicking the target speakers' styles. In this work, we present Grad-StyleSpeech, which is an any-speaker adaptive TTS framework that is based on a diffusion model that can generate highly natural speech with extremely high similarity to target speakers' voice, given a few seconds of reference speech. Grad-Sty…

Recently, end-to-end multi-speaker text-to-speech (TTS) systems gain success in the situation where a lot of high-quality speech plus their corresponding transcriptions are available. However, laborious paired data collection processes prevent many institutes from building multi-speaker TTS systems of great performance. In this work, we propose a semi-supervised learning approach for multi-speaker TTS. A multi-speaker TTS model can learn from the untranscribed audio via the proposed encoder-decoder framework with discrete speech representation. The experiment results demonstrate that with only…

We propose a neural text-to-speech (TTS) model that can imitate a new speaker's voice using only a small amount of speech sample. We demonstrate voice imitation using only a 6-seconds long speech sample without any other information such as transcripts. Our model also enables voice imitation instantly without additional training of the model. We implemented the voice imitating TTS model by combining a speaker embedder network with a state-of-the-art TTS model, Tacotron. The speaker embedder network takes a new speaker's speech sample and returns a speaker embedding. The speaker embedding with …

Zero-shot multi-speaker text-to-speech (ZSM-TTS) models aim to generate a speech sample with the voice characteristic of an unseen speaker. The main challenge of ZSM-TTS is to increase the overall speaker similarity for unseen speakers. One of the most successful speaker conditioning methods for flow-based multi-speaker text-to-speech (TTS) models is to utilize the functions which predict the scale and bias parameters of the affine coupling layers according to the given speaker embedding vector. In this letter, we improve on the previous speaker conditioning method by introducing a speaker-nor…
When deploying a Chinese neural text-to-speech (TTS) synthesis system, one of the challenges is to synthesize Chinese utterances with English phrases or words embedded. This paper looks into the problem in the encoder-decoder framework when only monolingual data from a target speaker is available. Specifically, we view the problem from two aspects: speaker consistency within an utterance and naturalness. We start the investigation with an Average Voice Model which is built from multi-speaker monolingual data, i.e. Mandarin and English data. On the basis of that, we look into speaker embedding …
We propose a novel training algorithm for a multi-speaker neural text-to-speech (TTS) model based on multi-task adversarial training. A conventional generative adversarial network (GAN)-based training algorithm significantly improves the quality of synthetic speech by reducing the statistical difference between natural and synthetic speech. However, the algorithm does not guarantee the generalization performance of the trained TTS model in synthesizing voices of unseen speakers who are not included in the training data. Our algorithm alternatively trains two deep neural networks: multi-task di…
Recent advances in neural multi-speaker text-to-speech (TTS) models have enabled the generation of reasonably good speech quality with a single model and made it possible to synthesize the speech of a speaker with limited training data. Fine-tuning to the target speaker data with the multi-speaker model can achieve better quality, however, there still exists a gap compared to the real speech sample and the model depends on the speaker. In this work, we propose GANSpeech, which is a high-fidelity multi-speaker TTS model that adopts the adversarial training method to a non-autoregressive multi-s…
This paper proposes speaker-adaptive neural vocoders for parametric text-to-speech (TTS) systems. Recently proposed WaveNet-based neural vocoding systems successfully generate a time sequence of speech signal with an autoregressive framework. However, it remains a challenge to synthesize high-quality speech when the amount of a target speaker's training data is insufficient. To generate more natural speech signals with the constraint of limited training data, we propose a speaker adaptation task with an effective variation of neural vocoding models. In the proposed method, a speaker-independen…

When the available data of a target speaker is insufficient to train a high quality speaker-dependent neural text-to-speech (TTS) system, we can combine data from multiple speakers and train a multi-speaker TTS model instead. Many studies have shown that neural multi-speaker TTS model trained with a small amount data from multiple speakers combined can generate synthetic speech with better quality and stability than a speaker-dependent one. However when the amount of data from each speaker is highly unbalanced, the best approach to make use of the excessive data remains unknown. Our experiment…
One-shot voice conversion (VC) aims to convert speech from any source speaker to an arbitrary target speaker with only a few seconds of reference speech from the target speaker. This relies heavily on disentangling the speaker's identity and speech content, a task that still remains challenging. Here, we propose a novel approach to learning disentangled speech representation by transfer learning from style-based text-to-speech (TTS) models. With cycle consistent and adversarial training, the style-based TTS models can perform transcription-guided one-shot VC with high fidelity and similarity. …

Adaptive text to speech (TTS) can synthesize new voices in zero-shot scenarios efficiently, by using a well-trained source TTS model without adapting it on the speech data of new speakers. Considering seen and unseen speakers have diverse characteristics, zero-shot adaptive TTS requires strong generalization ability on speaker characteristics, which brings modeling challenges. In this paper, we develop AdaSpeech 4, a zero-shot adaptive TTS system for high-quality speech synthesis. We model the speaker characteristics systematically to improve the generalization on new speakers. Generally, the …
