There has been a significant progress in Text-To-Speech (TTS) synthesis technology in recent years, thanks to the advancement in neural generative modeling. However, existing methods on any-speaker adaptive TTS have achieved unsatisfactory performance, due to their suboptimal accuracy in mimicking the target speakers' styles. In this work, we present Grad-StyleSpeech, which is an any-speaker adaptive TTS framework that is based on a diffusion model that can generate highly natural speech with extremely high similarity to target speakers' voice, given a few seconds of reference speech. Grad-StyleSpeech significantly outperforms recent speaker-adaptive TTS baselines on English benchmarks. Audio samples are available at https://nardien.github.io/grad-stylespeech-demo.

With rapid progress in neural text-to-speech (TTS) models, personalized speech generation is now in high demand for many applications. For practical applicability, a TTS model should generate high-quality speech with only a few audio samples from the given speaker, that are also short in length. However, existing methods either require to fine-tune the model or achieve low adaptation quality without fine-tuning. In this work, we propose StyleSpeech, a new TTS model which not only synthesizes high-quality speech but also effectively adapts to new speakers. Specifically, we propose Style-Adaptiv…
In expressive speech synthesis, there are high requirements for emotion interpretation. However, it is time-consuming to acquire emotional audio corpus for arbitrary speakers due to their deduction ability. In response to this problem, this paper proposes a cross-speaker emotion transfer method that can realize the transfer of emotions from source speaker to target speaker. A set of emotion tokens is firstly defined to represent various categories of emotions. They are trained to be highly correlated with corresponding emotions for controllable synthesis by cross-entropy loss and semi-supervis…

Building cross-lingual voice conversion (VC) systems for multiple speakers and multiple languages has been a challenging task for a long time. This paper describes a parallel non-autoregressive network to achieve bilingual and code-switched voice conversion for multiple speakers when there are only mono-lingual corpora for each language. We achieve cross-lingual VC between Mandarin speech with multiple speakers and English speech with multiple speakers by applying bilingual bottleneck features. To boost voice cloning performance, we use an adversarial speaker classifier with a gradient reversa…

Recently, synthesizing personalized speech by text-to-speech (TTS) application is highly demanded. But the previous TTS models require a mass of target speaker speeches for training. It is a high-cost task, and hard to record lots of utterances from the target speaker. Data augmentation of the speeches is a solution but leads to the low-quality synthesis speech problem. Some multi-speaker TTS models are proposed to address the issue. But the quantity of utterances of each speaker imbalance leads to the voice similarity problem. We propose the Target Domain Adaptation Speech Synthesis Network (…

Recent neural networks such as WaveNet and sampleRNN that learn directly from speech waveform samples have achieved very high-quality synthetic speech in terms of both naturalness and speaker similarity even in multi-speaker text-to-speech synthesis systems. Such neural networks are being used as an alternative to vocoders and hence they are often called neural vocoders. The neural vocoder uses acoustic features as local condition parameters, and these parameters need to be accurately predicted by another acoustic model. However, it is not yet clear how to train this acoustic model, which is p…
We present a meta-learning approach for adaptive text-to-speech (TTS) with few data. During training, we learn a multi-speaker model using a shared conditional WaveNet core and independent learned embeddings for each speaker. The aim of training is not to produce a neural network with fixed weights, which is then deployed as a TTS system. Instead, the aim is to produce a network that requires few data at deployment time to rapidly adapt to new speakers. We introduce and benchmark three strategies: (i) learning the speaker embedding while keeping the WaveNet core fixed, (ii) fine-tuning the ent…
We propose Guided-TTS, a high-quality text-to-speech (TTS) model that does not require any transcript of target speaker using classifier guidance. Guided-TTS combines an unconditional diffusion probabilistic model with a separately trained phoneme classifier for classifier guidance. Our unconditional diffusion model learns to generate speech without any context from untranscribed speech data. For TTS synthesis, we guide the generative process of the diffusion model with a phoneme classifier trained on a large-scale speech recognition dataset. We present a norm-based scaling method that reduces…

End-to-end speech recognition systems have achieved competitive results compared to traditional systems. However, the complex transformations involved between layers given highly variable acoustic signals are hard to analyze. In this paper, we present our ASR probing model, which synthesizes speech from hidden representations of end-to-end ASR to examine the information maintain after each layer calculation. Listening to the synthesized speech, we observe gradual removal of speaker variability and noise as the layer goes deeper, which aligns with the previous studies on how deep network functi…
At present, Text-to-speech (TTS) systems that are trained with high-quality transcribed speech data using end-to-end neural models can generate speech that is intelligible, natural, and closely resembles human speech. These models are trained with relatively large single-speaker professionally recorded audio, typically extracted from audiobooks. Meanwhile, due to the scarcity of freely available speech corpora of this kind, a larger gap exists in Arabic TTS research and development. Most of the existing freely available Arabic speech corpora are not suitable for TTS training as they contain mu…
Emotional voice conversion models adapt the emotion in speech without changing the speaker identity or linguistic content. They are less data hungry than text-to-speech models and allow to generate large amounts of emotional data for downstream tasks. In this work we propose EmoCat, a language-agnostic emotional voice conversion model. It achieves high-quality emotion conversion in German with less than 45 minutes of German emotional recordings by exploiting large amounts of emotional data in US English. EmoCat is an encoder-decoder model based on CopyCat, a voice conversion system which trans…

One-shot voice conversion (VC) with only a single target speaker's speech for reference has become a hot research topic. Existing works generally disentangle timbre, while information about pitch, rhythm and content is still mixed together. To perform one-shot VC effectively with further disentangling these speech components, we employ random resampling for pitch and content encoder and use the variational contrastive log-ratio upper bound of mutual information and gradient reversal layer based adversarial mutual information learning to ensure the different parts of the latent space containing…
Denoising diffusion probabilistic models (DDPMs) have recently achieved leading performances in many generative tasks. However, the inherited iterative sampling process costs hinder their applications to text-to-speech deployment. Through the preliminary study on diffusion model parameterization, we find that previous gradient-based TTS models require hundreds or thousands of iterations to guarantee high sample quality, which poses a challenge for accelerating sampling. In this work, we propose ProDiff, on progressive fast diffusion model for high-quality text-to-speech. Unlike previous work e…

To extract accurate speaker information for text-independent speaker verification, temporal dynamic CNNs (TDY-CNNs) adapting kernels to each time bin was proposed. However, model size of TDY-CNN is too large and the adaptive kernel's degree of freedom is limited. To address these limitations, we propose decomposed temporal dynamic CNNs (DTDY-CNNs) which forms time-adaptive kernel by combining static kernel with dynamic residual based on matrix decomposition. Proposed DTDY-ResNet-34(x0.50) using attentive statistical pooling without data augmentation shows EER of 0.96%, which is better than oth…

This paper presents an end-to-end text-independent speaker verification framework by jointly considering the speaker embedding (SE) network and automatic speech recognition (ASR) network. The SE network learns to output an embedding vector which distinguishes the speaker characteristics of the input utterance, while the ASR network learns to recognize the phonetic context of the input. In training our speaker verification framework, we consider both the triplet loss minimization and adversarial gradient of the ASR network to obtain more discriminative and text-independent speaker embedding vec…
Speech emotion recognition (SER) has attracted great attention in recent years due to the high demand for emotionally intelligent speech interfaces. Deriving speaker-invariant representations for speech emotion recognition is crucial. In this paper, we propose to apply adversarial training to SER to learn speaker-invariant representations. Our model consists of three parts: a representation learning sub-network with time-delay neural network (TDNN) and LSTM with statistical pooling, an emotion classification network and a speaker classification network. Both the emotion and speaker classificat…
Transcribed datasets typically contain speaker identity for each instance in the data. We investigate two ways to incorporate this information during training: Multi-Task Learning and Adversarial Learning. In multi-task learning, the goal is speaker prediction; we expect a performance improvement with this joint training if the two tasks of speech recognition and speaker recognition share a common set of underlying features. In contrast, adversarial learning is a means to learn representations invariant to the speaker. We then expect better performance if this learnt invariance helps generaliz…

The conventional speaker recognition frameworks (e.g., the i-vector and CNN-based approach) have been successfully applied to various tasks when the channel of the enrolment dataset is similar to that of the test dataset. However, in real-world applications, mismatch always exists between these two datasets, which may severely deteriorate the recognition performance. Previously, a few channel compensation algorithms have been proposed, such as Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA) and Probabilistic LDA. However, these methods always require the collections of different channels from a specific sp…
Building a high-quality singing corpus for a person who is not good at singing is non-trivial, thus making it challenging to create a singing voice synthesizer for this person. Learn2Sing is dedicated to synthesizing the singing voice of a speaker without his or her singing data by learning from data recorded by others, i.e., the singing teacher. Inspired by the fact that pitch is the key style factor to distinguish singing from speaking voice, the proposed Learn2Sing 2.0 first generates the preliminary acoustic feature with averaged pitch value in the phone level, which allows the training of…
Multi-speaker TTS has to learn both linguistic embedding and text embedding to generate speech of desired linguistic content in desired voice. However, it is unclear which characteristic of speech results from speaker and which part from linguistic content. In this paper, text embedding is forced to unlearn speaker dependent characteristic using gradient reversal layer to auxiliary speaker classifier that we introduce. We train a speaker classifier using angular margin softmax loss. In subjective evaluation, it is shown that the adversarial training of text embedding for unilingual multi-speak…

Recently, self-supervised learning (SSL) has demonstrated strong performance in speaker recognition, even if the pre-training objective is designed for speech recognition. In this paper, we study which factor leads to the success of self-supervised learning on speaker-related tasks, e.g. speaker verification (SV), through a series of carefully designed experiments. Our empirical results on the Voxceleb-1 dataset suggest that the benefit of SSL to SV task is from a combination of mask speech prediction loss, data scale, and model size, while the SSL quantizer has a minor impact. We further empl…

Representation learning for speech emotion recognition is challenging due to labeled data sparsity issue and lack of gold standard references. In addition, there is much variability from input speech signals, human subjective perception of the signals and emotion label ambiguity. In this paper, we propose a machine learning framework to obtain speech emotion representations by limiting the effect of speaker variability in the speech signals. Specifically, we propose to disentangle the speaker characteristics from emotion through an adversarial training network in order to better represent emot…

Speaker-independent speech separation has achieved remarkable performance in recent years with the development of deep neural network (DNN). Various network architectures, from traditional convolutional neural network (CNN) and recurrent neural network (RNN) to advanced transformer, have been designed sophistically to improve separation performance. However, the state-of-the-art models usually suffer from several flaws related to the computation, such as large model size, huge memory consumption and computational complexity. To find the balance between the performance and computational efficie…
In this paper, we propose a new pooling method called spatial pyramid encoding (SPE) to generate speaker embeddings for text-independent speaker verification. We first partition the output feature maps from a deep residual network (ResNet) into increasingly fine sub-regions and extract speaker embeddings from each sub-region through a learnable dictionary encoding layer. These embeddings are concatenated to obtain the final speaker representation. The SPE layer not only generates a fixed-dimensional speaker embedding for a variable-length speech segment, but also aggregates the information of …
Speaker adaptive training (SAT) of neural network acoustic models learns models in a way that makes them more suitable for adaptation to test conditions. Conventionally, model-based speaker adaptive training is performed by having a set of speaker dependent parameters that are jointly optimised with speaker independent parameters in order to remove speaker variation. However, this does not scale well if all neural network weights are to be adapted to the speaker. In this paper we formulate speaker adaptive training as a meta-learning task, in which an adaptation process using gradient descent …
Recent studies in neural network-based monaural speech separation (SS) have achieved a remarkable success thanks to increasing ability of long sequence modeling. However, they would degrade significantly when put under realistic noisy conditions, as the background noise could be mistaken for speaker's speech and thus interfere with the separated sources. To alleviate this problem, we propose a novel network to unify speech enhancement and separation with gradient modulation to improve noise-robustness. Specifically, we first build a unified network by combining speech enhancement (SE) and sepa…

Generalized end-to-end (GE2E) model is widely used in speaker verification (SV) fields due to its expandability and generality regardless of specific languages. However, the long-short term memory (LSTM) based on GE2E has two limitations: First, the embedding of GE2E suffers from vanishing gradient, which leads to performance degradation for very long input sequences. Secondly, utterances are not represented as a properly fixed dimensional vector. In this paper, to overcome issues mentioned above, we propose a novel framework for SV, end-to-end trainable self-attentive shallow network (SASN), …
