Adaptive text to speech (TTS) can synthesize new voices in zero-shot scenarios efficiently, by using a well-trained source TTS model without adapting it on the speech data of new speakers. Considering seen and unseen speakers have diverse characteristics, zero-shot adaptive TTS requires strong generalization ability on speaker characteristics, which brings modeling challenges. In this paper, we develop AdaSpeech 4, a zero-shot adaptive TTS system for high-quality speech synthesis. We model the speaker characteristics systematically to improve the generalization on new speakers. Generally, the modeling of speaker characteristics can be categorized into three steps: extracting speaker representation, taking this speaker representation as condition, and synthesizing speech/mel-spectrogram given this speaker representation. Accordingly, we improve the modeling in three steps: 1) To extract speaker representation with better generalization, we factorize the speaker characteristics into basis vectors and extract speaker representation by weighted combining of these basis vectors through attention. 2) We leverage conditional layer normalization to integrate the extracted speaker representation to TTS model. 3) We propose a novel supervision loss based on the distribution of basis vectors to maintain the corresponding speaker characteristics in generated mel-spectrograms. Without any fine-tuning, AdaSpeech 4 achieves better voice quality and similarity than baselines in multiple datasets.

Custom voice, a specific text to speech (TTS) service in commercial speech platforms, aims to adapt a source TTS model to synthesize personal voice for a target speaker using few speech data. Custom voice presents two unique challenges for TTS adaptation: 1) to support diverse customers, the adaptation model needs to handle diverse acoustic conditions that could be very different from source speech data, and 2) to support a large number of customers, the adaptation parameters need to be small enough for each target speaker to reduce memory usage while maintaining high voice quality. In this wo…

Text to speech (TTS) is widely used to synthesize personal voice for a target speaker, where a well-trained source TTS model is fine-tuned with few paired adaptation data (speech and its transcripts) on this target speaker. However, in many scenarios, only untranscribed speech data is available for adaptation, which brings challenges to the previous TTS adaptation pipelines (e.g., AdaSpeech). In this paper, we develop AdaSpeech 2, an adaptive TTS system that only leverages untranscribed speech data for adaptation. Specifically, we introduce a mel-spectrogram encoder to a well-trained TTS model…
While recent text to speech (TTS) models perform very well in synthesizing reading-style (e.g., audiobook) speech, it is still challenging to synthesize spontaneous-style speech (e.g., podcast or conversation), mainly because of two reasons: 1) the lack of training data for spontaneous speech; 2) the difficulty in modeling the filled pauses (um and uh) and diverse rhythms in spontaneous speech. In this paper, we develop AdaSpeech 3, an adaptive TTS system that fine-tunes a well-trained reading-style TTS model for spontaneous-style speech. Specifically, 1) to insert filled pauses (FP) in the te…

Given a piece of speech and its transcript text, text-based speech editing aims to generate speech that can be seamlessly inserted into the given speech by editing the transcript. Existing methods adopt a two-stage approach: synthesize the input text using a generic text-to-speech (TTS) engine and then transform the voice to the desired voice using voice conversion (VC). A major problem of this framework is that VC is a challenging problem which usually needs a moderate amount of parallel training data to work satisfactorily. In this paper, we propose a one-stage context-aware framework to gen…

HierSpeech++: Bridging the Gap between Semantic and Acoustic Representation of Speech by Hierarchical Variational Inference for Zero-shot Speech Synthesis
We introduce a language modeling approach for text to speech synthesis (TTS). Specifically, we train a neural codec language model (called Vall-E) using discrete codes derived from an off-the-shelf neural audio codec model, and regard TTS as a conditional language modeling task rather than continuous signal regression as in previous work. During the pre-training stage, we scale up the TTS training data to 60K hours of English speech which is hundreds of times larger than existing systems. Vall-E emerges in-context learning capabilities and can be used to synthesize high-quality personalized sp…

Recently, few-shot voice cloning has achieved a significant improvement. However, most models for few-shot voice cloning are single-modal, and multi-modal few-shot voice cloning has been understudied. In this paper, we propose to use multi-modal learning to improve the few-shot voice cloning performance. Inspired by the recent works on unsupervised speech representation, the proposed multi-modal system is built by extending Tacotron2 with an unsupervised speech representation module. We evaluate our proposed system in two few-shot voice cloning scenarios, namely few-shot text-to-speech(TTS) an…
This paper investigates how to leverage a DurIAN-based average model to enable a new speaker to have both accurate pronunciation and fluent cross-lingual speaking with very limited monolingual data. A weakness of the recently proposed end-to-end text-to-speech (TTS) systems is that robust alignment is hard to achieve, which hinders it to scale well with very limited data. To cope with this issue, we introduce AdaDurIAN by training an improved DurIAN-based average model and leverage it to few-shot learning with the shared speaker-independent content encoder across different speakers. Several fe…
Adapting a neural text-to-speech (TTS) model to a target speaker typically involves fine-tuning most if not all of the parameters of a pretrained multi-speaker backbone model. However, serving hundreds of fine-tuned neural TTS models is expensive as each of them requires significant footprint and separate computational resources (e.g., accelerators, memory). To scale speaker adapted neural TTS voices to hundreds of speakers while preserving the naturalness and speaker similarity, this paper proposes a parameter-efficient few-shot speaker adaptation, where the backbone model is augmented with t…
On account of growing demands for personalization, the need for a so-called few-shot TTS system that clones speakers with only a few data is emerging. To address this issue, we propose Attentron, a few-shot TTS model that clones voices of speakers unseen during training. It introduces two special encoders, each serving different purposes. A fine-grained encoder extracts variable-length style information via an attention mechanism, and a coarse-grained encoder greatly stabilizes the speech synthesis, circumventing unintelligible gibberish even for synthesizing speech of unseen speakers. In addi…
Several recently proposed text-to-speech (TTS) models achieved to generate the speech samples with the human-level quality in the single-speaker and multi-speaker TTS scenarios with a set of pre-defined speakers. However, synthesizing a new speaker's voice with a single reference audio, commonly known as zero-shot multi-speaker text-to-speech (ZSM-TTS), is still a very challenging task. The main challenge of ZSM-TTS is the speaker domain shift problem upon the speech generation of a new speaker. To mitigate this problem, we propose adversarial speaker-consistency learning (ASCL). The proposed …
We present a unified system to realize one-shot voice conversion (VC) on the pitch, rhythm, and speaker attributes. Existing works generally ignore the correlation between prosody and language content, leading to the degradation of naturalness in converted speech. Additionally, the lack of proper language features prevents these systems from accurately preserving language content after conversion. To address these issues, we devise a cascaded modular system leveraging self-supervised discrete speech units as language representation. These discrete units provide duration information essential f…
We propose a Text-to-Speech method to create an unseen expressive style using one utterance of expressive speech of around one second. Specifically, we enhance the disentanglement capabilities of a state-of-the-art sequence-to-sequence based system with a Variational AutoEncoder (VAE) and a Householder Flow. The proposed system provides a 22% KL-divergence reduction while jointly improving perceptual metrics over state-of-the-art. At synthesis time we use one example of expressive style as a reference input to the encoder for generating any text in the desired style. Perceptual MUSHRA evaluati…

Text-to-speech (TTS) and voice conversion (VC) are two different tasks both aiming at generating high quality speaking voice according to different input modality. Due to their similarity, this paper proposes UnifySpeech, which brings TTS and VC into a unified framework for the first time. The model is based on the assumption that speech can be decoupled into three independent components: content information, speaker information, prosody information. Both TTS and VC can be regarded as mining these three parts of information from the input and completing the reconstruction of speech. For TTS, t…
One-shot voice conversion (VC) aims to convert speech from any source speaker to an arbitrary target speaker with only a few seconds of reference speech from the target speaker. This relies heavily on disentangling the speaker's identity and speech content, a task that still remains challenging. Here, we propose a novel approach to learning disentangled speech representation by transfer learning from style-based text-to-speech (TTS) models. With cycle consistent and adversarial training, the style-based TTS models can perform transcription-guided one-shot VC with high fidelity and similarity. …

The zero-shot scenario for speech generation aims at synthesizing a novel unseen voice with only one utterance of the target speaker. Although the challenges of adapting new voices in zero-shot scenario exist in both stages -- acoustic modeling and vocoder, previous works usually consider the problem from only one stage. In this paper, we extend our previous Glow-WaveGAN to Glow-WaveGAN 2, aiming to solve the problem from both stages for high-quality zero-shot text-to-speech and any-to-any voice conversion. We first build a universal WaveGAN model for extracting latent distribution $p(z)$ of s…

In this paper, we propose SC-GlowTTS: an efficient zero-shot multi-speaker text-to-speech model that improves similarity for speakers unseen during training. We propose a speaker-conditional architecture that explores a flow-based decoder that works in a zero-shot scenario. As text encoders, we explore a dilated residual convolutional-based encoder, gated convolutional-based encoder, and transformer-based encoder. Additionally, we have shown that adjusting a GAN-based vocoder for the spectrograms predicted by the TTS model on the training dataset can significantly improve the similarity and sp…

We propose an unsupervised learning method to disentangle speech into content representation and speaker identity representation. We apply this method to the challenging one-shot cross-lingual voice conversion task to demonstrate the effectiveness of the disentanglement. Inspired by $β$-VAE, we introduce a learning objective that balances between the information captured by the content and speaker representations. In addition, the inductive biases from the architectural design and the training dataset further encourage the desired disentanglement. Both objective and subjective evaluations show…
Zero-shot speaker adaptation aims to clone an unseen speaker's voice without any adaptation time and parameters. Previous researches usually use a speaker encoder to extract a global fixed speaker embedding from reference speech, and several attempts have tried variable-length speaker embedding. However, they neglect to transfer the personal pronunciation characteristics related to phoneme content, leading to poor speaker similarity in terms of detailed speaking styles and pronunciation habits. To improve the ability of the speaker encoder to model personal pronunciation characteristics, we pr…

Zero-shot multi-speaker text-to-speech (ZSM-TTS) models aim to generate a speech sample with the voice characteristic of an unseen speaker. The main challenge of ZSM-TTS is to increase the overall speaker similarity for unseen speakers. One of the most successful speaker conditioning methods for flow-based multi-speaker text-to-speech (TTS) models is to utilize the functions which predict the scale and bias parameters of the affine coupling layers according to the given speaker embedding vector. In this letter, we improve on the previous speaker conditioning method by introducing a speaker-nor…
One-shot voice conversion (VC), which performs conversion across arbitrary speakers with only a single target-speaker utterance for reference, can be effectively achieved by speech representation disentanglement. Existing work generally ignores the correlation between different speech representations during training, which causes leakage of content information into the speaker representation and thus degrades VC performance. To alleviate this issue, we employ vector quantization (VQ) for content encoding and introduce mutual information (MI) as the correlation metric during training, to achiev…

Multi-speaker text-to-speech (TTS) using a few adaption data is a challenge in practical applications. To address that, we propose a zero-shot multi-speaker TTS, named nnSpeech, that could synthesis a new speaker voice without fine-tuning and using only one adaption utterance. Compared with using a speaker representation module to extract the characteristics of new speakers, our method bases on a speaker-guided conditional variational autoencoder and can generate a variable Z, which contains both speaker characteristics and content information. The latent variable Z distribution is approximate…
