Custom voice, a specific text to speech (TTS) service in commercial speech platforms, aims to adapt a source TTS model to synthesize personal voice for a target speaker using few speech data. Custom voice presents two unique challenges for TTS adaptation: 1) to support diverse customers, the adaptation model needs to handle diverse acoustic conditions that could be very different from source speech data, and 2) to support a large number of customers, the adaptation parameters need to be small enough for each target speaker to reduce memory usage while maintaining high voice quality. In this work, we propose AdaSpeech, an adaptive TTS system for high-quality and efficient customization of new voices. We design several techniques in AdaSpeech to address the two challenges in custom voice: 1) To handle different acoustic conditions, we use two acoustic encoders to extract an utterance-level vector and a sequence of phoneme-level vectors from the target speech during training; in inference, we extract the utterance-level vector from a reference speech and use an acoustic predictor to predict the phoneme-level vectors. 2) To better trade off the adaptation parameters and voice quality, we introduce conditional layer normalization in the mel-spectrogram decoder of AdaSpeech, and fine-tune this part in addition to speaker embedding for adaptation. We pre-train the source TTS model on LibriTTS datasets and fine-tune it on VCTK and LJSpeech datasets (with different acoustic conditions from LibriTTS) with few adaptation data, e.g., 20 sentences, about 1 minute speech. Experiment results show that AdaSpeech achieves much better adaptation quality than baseline methods, with only about 5K specific parameters for each speaker, which demonstrates its effectiveness for custom voice. Text to speech (TTS) is widely used to synthesize personal voice for a target speaker, where a well-trained source TTS model is fine-tuned with few paired adaptation data (speech and its transcripts) on this target speaker. However, in many scenarios, only untranscribed speech data is available for adaptation, which brings challenges to the previous TTS adaptation pipelines (e.g., AdaSpeech). In this paper, we develop AdaSpeech 2, an adaptive TTS system that only leverages untranscribed speech data for adaptation. Specifically, we introduce a mel-spectrogram encoder to a well-trained TTS model…
Adaptive text to speech (TTS) can synthesize new voices in zero-shot scenarios efficiently, by using a well-trained source TTS model without adapting it on the speech data of new speakers. Considering seen and unseen speakers have diverse characteristics, zero-shot adaptive TTS requires strong generalization ability on speaker characteristics, which brings modeling challenges. In this paper, we develop AdaSpeech 4, a zero-shot adaptive TTS system for high-quality speech synthesis. We model the speaker characteristics systematically to improve the generalization on new speakers. Generally, the …
Custom voice is to construct a personal speech synthesis system by adapting the source speech synthesis model to the target model through the target few recordings. The solution to constructing a custom voice is to combine an adaptive acoustic model with a robust vocoder. However, training a robust vocoder usually requires a multi-speaker dataset, which should include various age groups and various timbres, so that the trained vocoder can be used for unseen speakers. Collecting such a multi-speaker dataset is difficult, and the dataset distribution always has a mismatch with the distribution o…
We describe our approach to create and deliver a custom voice for a conversational AI use-case. More specifically, we provide a voice for a Digital Einstein character, to enable human-computer interaction within the digital conversation experience. To create the voice which fits the context well, we first design a voice character and we produce the recordings which correspond to the desired speech attributes. We then model the voice. Our solution utilizes Fastspeech 2 for log-scaled mel-spectrogram prediction from phonemes and Parallel WaveGAN to generate the waveforms. The system supports a c…

Voice Conversion (VC) for unseen speakers, also known as zero-shot VC, is an attractive research topic as it enables a range of applications like voice customizing, animation production, and others. Recent work in this area made progress with disentanglement methods that separate utterance content and speaker characteristics from speech audio recordings. However, many of these methods are subject to the leakage of prosody (e.g., pitch, volume), causing the speaker voice in the synthesized speech to be different from the desired target speakers. To prevent this issue, we propose a novel self-su…

In this paper, we propose a new approach to pathological speech synthesis. Instead of using healthy speech as a source, we customise an existing pathological speech sample to a new speaker's voice characteristics. This approach alleviates the evaluation problem one normally has when converting typical speech to pathological speech, as in our approach, the voice conversion (VC) model does not need to be optimised for speech degradation but only for the speaker change. This change in the optimisation ensures that any degradation found in naturalness is due to the conversion process and not due t…
In this paper, we focus on improving the performance of the text-dependent speaker verification system in the scenario of limited training data. The speaker verification system deep learning based text-dependent generally needs a large scale text-dependent training data set which could be labor and cost expensive, especially for customized new wake-up words. In recent studies, voice conversion systems that can generate high quality synthesized speech of seen and unseen speakers have been proposed. Inspired by those works, we adopt two different voice conversion methods as well as the very simp…

Sequence-to-Sequence Text-to-Speech architectures that directly generate low level acoustic features from phonetic sequences are known to produce natural and expressive speech when provided with adequate amounts of training data. Such systems can learn and transfer desired speaking styles from one seen speaker to another (in multi-style multi-speaker settings), which is highly desirable for creating scalable and customizable Human-Computer Interaction systems. In this work we explore one-to-many style transfer from a dedicated single-speaker conversational corpus with style nuances and interje…
With the popularity of deep neural network, speech synthesis task has achieved significant improvements based on the end-to-end encoder-decoder framework in the recent days. More and more applications relying on speech synthesis technology have been widely used in our daily life. Robust speech synthesis model depends on high quality and customized data which needs lots of collecting efforts. It is worth investigating how to take advantage of low-quality and low resource voice data which can be easily obtained from the Internet for usage of synthesizing personalized voice. Style transfer for out-of-domain (OOD) speech synthesis aims to generate speech samples with unseen style (e.g., speaker identity, emotion, and prosody) derived from an acoustic reference, while facing the following challenges: 1) The highly dynamic style features in expressive voice are difficult to model and transfer; and 2) the TTS models should be robust enough to handle diverse OOD conditions that differ from the source data. This paper proposes GenerSpeech, a text-to-speech model towards high-fidelity zero-shot style transfer of OOD custom voice. GenerSpeech decomposes the speech variati…
Speech cloning technology is becoming more sophisticated thanks to the advances in machine learning. Researchers have successfully implemented natural-sounding English speech synthesis and good English speech cloning by some effective models. However, because of prosodic phrasing and large character set of Mandarin, Chinese utilization of these models is not yet complete. By creating a new dataset and replacing Tacotron synthesizer with VAENAR-TTS, we improved the existing speech cloning technique CV2TTS to almost real-time speech cloning while guaranteeing synthesis quality. In the process, w…
Nowadays, speech is becoming a more common, if not standard, interface to technology. This can be seen in the trend of technology changes over the years. Increasingly, voice is used to control programs, appliances and personal devices within homes, cars, workplaces, and public spaces through smartphones and home assistant devices using Amazon's Alexa, Google's Assistant and Apple's Siri, and other proliferating technologies. However, most speech interfaces are not accessible for Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing (DHH) people. In this paper, performances of current Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) wit…

We study the individuality of the human voice with respect to a widely used feature representation of speech utterances, namely, the i-vector model. As a first step toward this goal, we compare and contrast uniqueness measures proposed for different biometric modalities. Then, we introduce a new uniqueness measure that evaluates the entropy of i-vectors while taking into account speaker level variations. Our measure operates in the discrete feature space and relies on accurate estimation of the distribution of i-vectors. Therefore, i-vectors are quantized while ensuring that both the quantized…
Speech Enhancement (SE) systems typically operate on monaural input and are used for applications including voice communications and capture cleanup for user generated content. Recent advancements and changes in the devices used for these applications are likely to lead to an increase in the amount of two-channel content for the same applications. However, SE systems are typically designed for monaural input; stereo results produced using trivial methods such as channel independent or mid-side processing may be unsatisfactory, including substantial speech distortions. To address this, we propo…

New Advances in machine learning have made Automated Speech Recognition (ASR) systems practical and more scalable. These systems, however, pose serious privacy threats as speech is a rich source of sensitive acoustic and textual information. Although offline and open-source ASR eliminates the privacy risks, its transcription performance is inferior to that of cloud-based ASR systems, especially for real-world use cases. In this paper, we propose Pr$εε$ch, an end-to-end speech transcription system which lies at an intermediate point in the privacy-utility spectrum. It protects the acoustic feat…

Scores from traditional confidence classifiers (CCs) in automatic speech recognition (ASR) systems lack universal interpretation and vary with updates to the underlying confidence or acoustic models (AMs). In this work, we build interpretable confidence scores with an objective to closely align with ASR accuracy. We propose a new sequence-level CC with a richer context providing CC scores highly correlated with ASR accuracy and scores stable across CC updates. Hence, expanding CC applications. Recently, AM customization has gained traction with the widespread use of unified models. Conventiona…

Textual escalation detection has been widely applied to e-commerce companies' customer service systems to pre-alert and prevent potential conflicts. Similarly, in public areas such as airports and train stations, where many impersonal conversations frequently take place, acoustic-based escalation detection systems are also useful to enhance passengers' safety and maintain public order. To this end, we introduce a system based on acoustic-lexical features to detect escalation from speech, Voice Activity Detection (VAD) and label smoothing are adopted to further enhance the performance in our ex…

Speech synthesis (text to speech, TTS) and recognition (automatic speech recognition, ASR) are important speech tasks, and require a large amount of text and speech pairs for model training. However, there are more than 6,000 languages in the world and most languages are lack of speech training data, which poses significant challenges when building TTS and ASR systems for extremely low-resource languages. In this paper, we develop LRSpeech, a TTS and ASR system under the extremely low-resource setting, which can support rare languages with low data cost. LRSpeech consists of three key techniqu…
