We consider a flavor model based on A4 modular group to account for both lepton and quark parameters (masses and mixing). The inverse seesaw mechanism is considered to produce the light neutrino masses. Lepton masses and mixing are obtained in terms of Yukawa coupling ratios and values of the modulus τ nearby some fixed points for inverted neutrino mass hierarchy. The quark masses and mixing are arisen at the same τ values used in inverted neutrino mass hierarchy and are in agreements with the recent data.
We present a model of leptonic mixing based on two $A_5$ modular symmetries using the Weinberg operator. The two modular symmetries are broken to the respective diagonal $A_5$ subgroup. At the effective level, the model behaves as a model with a single $A_5$ modular flavour symmetry, but with two moduli. Using both as stabilisers, different residual symmetries are preserved, leading to golden ratio mixing that is perturbed by a rotation.
We extend the even weight modular forms of modular invariant approach to general integral weight modular forms. We find that the modular forms of integral weights and level $N$ can be arranged into irreducible representations of the homogeneous finite modular group $Γ'_N$ which is the double covering of $Γ_N$. The lowest weight 1 modular forms of level 3 are constructed in terms of Dedekind eta-function, and they transform as a doublet of $Γ'_3 \cong T'$. The modular forms of weights 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 are presented. We build a model of lepton masses and mixing based on $T'$ modular symmetry.
We construct lepton flavour models based on two $A_4$ modular symmetries. The two $A_4$ are broken by a bi-triplet field to the diagonal $A_4$ subgroup, resulting in an effective modular $A_4$ flavour symmetry with two moduli. We employ these moduli as stabilisers, that preserve distinct residual symmetries, enabling us to obtain Tri-Maximal 2 (TM2) mixing with a minimal field content (without flavons).
We study models of lepton masses and mixing based on broken modular invariance. We consider invariance under the finite modular group $Γ_4 \simeq S_4$ and focus on the minimal scenario where the expectation value of the modulus is the only source of symmetry breaking, such that no flavons need to be introduced. After constructing a basis for the lowest weight modular forms, we build two minimal models, one of which successfully accommodates charged lepton masses and neutrino oscillation data, while predicting the values of the Dirac and Majorana CPV phases.
We discuss a minimal flavour model with twin modular symmetries, leading to trimaximal TM$_1$ lepton mixing in which the first column of the tri-bimaximal lepton mixing matrix is preserved. The model involves two modular $S_4$ groups, one acting in the neutrino sector, associated with a modulus field value $τ_{SU}$ with residual $Z^{SU}_2$ symmetry, and one acting in the charged lepton sector, associated with a modulus field value $τ_{T}$ with residual $Z^{T}_3$ symmetry. Apart from the predictions of TM$_1$ mixing, the model leads to a new neutrino mass sum rule which implies lower bounds on …
We present a comprehensive analysis of neutrino mass and lepton mixing in theories with $A_5$ modular symmetry. We construct the weight 2, weight 4 and weight 6 modular forms of level 5 in terms of Dedekind eta-functions and Klein forms, and their decomposition into irreducible representation of $A_5$. We construct all the simplest models based on $A_5$ modular symmetry, including scenarios of models with and without flavons in the charged lepton sectors. For each case, the neutrino masses can be generated through either the Weinberg operator or the type I seesaw mechanism. We perform an exhau…
We show how quark and lepton mass hierarchies can be reproduced in the framework of modular symmetry. The mechanism is analogous to the Froggatt-Nielsen (FN) mechanism, but without requiring any Abelian symmetry to be introduced, nor any Standard Model (SM) singlet flavon to break it. The modular weights of fermion fields play the role of FN charges, and SM singlet fields with non-zero modular weight called weightons play the role of flavons. We illustrate the mechanism by analysing $A_4$ (modular level 3) models of quark and lepton (including neutrino) masses and mixing, with a single modulus…
Discrete symmetries being preferred to explain the neutrino phenomenology, we chose the simplest $S_3$ group and explore the implication of its modular form on neutrino masses and mixing. Non-trivial transformations of Yukawa couplings under this symmetry, make the model phenomenologically interesting by reducing the requirement of multiple scalar fields. This symmetry imposes a specific flavor structure to the neutrino mass matrix within the framework of less frequented type III seesaw mechanism and helps to explore the neutrino mixing consistent with the current observation. Apart, we also e…
We study lepton mixing patterns which are derived from finite modular groups Gamma_N, requiring subgroups G_nu and G_e to be preserved in the neutrino and charged lepton sectors, respectively. We show that only six groups Gamma_N with N=3,4,5,7,8,16 are relevant. A comprehensive analysis is presented for G_e arbitrary and G_nu=Z2 x Z2, as demanded if neutrinos are Majorana particles. We discuss interesting patterns arising from both groups G_e and G_nu being arbitrary. Several of the most promising patterns are specific deviations from tri-bimaximal mixing, all predicting theta_13 non-zero as …
The present work is inspired by the application of $A_4$ modular symmetry in the linear seesaw framework, which restricts the use of multiple flavon fields. Linear seesaw is realized with six heavy $SU(2)_L$ singlet fermion superfields and a weighton in a supersymmetric framework. The non-trivial transformation of Yukawa couplings under the $A_4$ modular symmetry helps to explore the neutrino phenomenology with a specific flavor structure of the mass matrix. We discuss the phenomena of neutrino mixing and show that the obtained mixing angles and CP violating phase in this framework are compati…
In this paper, we investigate the double covering of modular $Γ^{}_5 \simeq A^{}_5$ group and derive all the modular forms of weight one for the first time. The modular forms of higher weights are also explicitly given by decomposing the direct products of weight-one forms. For the double covering group $Γ^\prime_5 \simeq A^\prime_5$, there exist two inequivalent two-dimensional irreducible representations, into which we can assign two right-handed neutrino singlets in the minimal seesaw model. Two concrete models with such a salient feature have been constructed to successfully explain lepton…
We construct phenomenologically viable models of lepton masses and mixing based on modular $A_4$ invariance broken to residual symmetries $\mathbb{Z}^{T}_3$ or $\mathbb{Z}^{ST}_3$ and $\mathbb{Z}^S_2$ respectively in the charged lepton and neutrino sectors. In these models the neutrino mixing matrix is of trimaximal mixing form. In addition to successfully describing the charged lepton masses, neutrino mass-squared differences and the atmospheric and reactor neutrino mixing angles $θ_{23}$ and $θ_{13}$, these models predict the values of the lightest neutrino mass (i.e., the absolute neutrino …
In this paper, we show how the mixing angles of the standard parameterization add when multiplying the quark and leptonic mixing matrices, i.e., we derive explicit sum rules for the quark and leptonic mixing angles. In this connection, we also discuss other recently proposed sum rules for the mixing angles assuming bimaximal fermion mixing. In addition, we find that the present experimental and phenomenological data of the mixing angles naturally fulfill our sum rules, and thus, give rise to bilarge or bimaximal fermion mixing.

We perform a comprehensive study of the homogeneous finite modular group $A'_5$ which is the double covering of $A_5$. The integral weight and level 5 modular forms have been constructed up to weight 6 and they are decomposed into the irreducible representations of $A'_5$. Then we perform a systematical analysis of the $A'_5$ modular models for lepton masses and mixing. The phenomenologically viable models with minimal number of free parameters and the results of fit are presented. We find out 15 models with 9 real free parameters which can accommodate the experimental data of lepton sector. A…
It is shown that a fermion mass matrix changing in orientation (rotating) with changing scales can give a simple yet near-quantitative explanation for quark mixing, neutrino oscillations and the fermion mass hierarchy.
In this paper, we study the implications of the modular $A^{}_4$ flavor symmetry in constructing a supersymmetric minimal type-(I+II) seesaw model, in which only one right-handed neutrino and two Higgs triplets are introduced to account for the tiny neutrino masses, flavor mixing and CP violation. The right-handed neutrino as well as the Higgs triplets in this model are assigned into the trivial one-dimensional irreducible representation of the modular group $A^{}_{4}$. We show that the individual contributions to the neutrino masses from the right-handed neutrino and the Higgs triplet are com…
We study a flavor model that the quark sector has the $S_3$ modular symmetry, while the lepton sector has the $A_4$ modular symmetry. Our model leads to characteristic quark mass matrices which are consistent with experimental data of quark masses, mixing angles and the CP violating phase. The lepton sector is also consistent with the experimental data of neutrino oscillations. We also study baryon and lepton number violations in our flavor model.
We discuss the case of simultaneous mixing of gauge bosons and mixing of fermions in a model independent way and for a variety of extra-fermion representations. In this context we analyze a class of lepton family violating processes, namely Z --> e tau, Z --> mu tau, Z --> e mu, mu --> e e e, tau --> e e e, tau --> mu mu mu, tau --> e mu mu and tau --> mu e e in the presence of one extra neutral gauge boson, Z', with universal, non-universal or family changing couplings. We derive bounds on the combined effect of Z-Z' mixing and ordinary--exotic lepton mixing.
We report on an explicit on-shell framework to renormalize the fermion-flavour mixing matrices in the Standard Model and its extensions, at one-loop level. It is based on a novel procedure to separate the external-leg mixing corrections into gauge-independent self-mass and gauge-dependent wave-function renormalization contributions.
We study the lepton flavor models, whose flavor symmetries are finite subgroups of the modular group such as $S_3$ and $A_4$. In our models, couplings are also nontrivial representations of these groups and modular functions of the modulus. We study the possibilities that these models realize realistic values of neutrino masses and lepton mixing angles.
We formulate and discuss a 4-dimensional SUSY version of an A4 model for tri-bimaximal neutrino mixing which is completely natural. We also study the next-to-the-leading corrections and show that they are small, once the ratios of A4 breaking VEVs to the cutoff are fixed in a specified interval. We also point out an interesting way of presenting the A4 group starting from the modular group. In this approach, which could be interesting in itself as an indication on a possible origin of A4, the lagrangian basis where the symmetry is formulated coincides with the basis where the charged leptons a…
We investigate the mixing of an extra ${Z^0}^\prime$ with the standard $Z^0$ and mixings of exotic fermions with their standard counterparts through some precisely measured electroweak observables. These observables are geared to search for physics beyond the Standard Model. We observe that although most of such mixings are severely constrained by the recent LEP data, some of the mixing angles could still be rather large, awaiting future tests.
Two topics are covered in this paper. In the first part the relation between quark mass matrices and observable quantities in gauge theories. In the second part neutrino masses and mixings in a seesaw framework.
The possibility of adding an SU(2) horizontal symmetry to the 331 model is studied. It is found that simple, anomaly-free fermion assignments can be made which lead to plausible results for fermion masses and mixings. In particular, all particles of the first generation are massless at tree-level, and the CKM matrix acquires a realistic form.
I propose the first multiscalar singlet extension of the Standard Model (SM), that generates tree level top quark and exotic fermion masses as well as one and three loop level masses for charged fermions lighter than the top quark and for light active neutrinos, respectively, without invoking electrically charged scalar fields. That model, which is based on the $S_{3}\times Z_{8}$ discrete symmetry, successfully explains the observed SM fermion mass and mixing pattern. The charged exotic fermions induce one loop level masses for charged fermions lighter than the top quark. The $Z_{8}$ charged …
We have performed a systematical analysis of lepton and quark masses models based on $Γ_4\cong S_4$ modular symmetry with gCP symmetry. We have considered both cases that neutrinos are Majorana particles and Dirac particles. All possible nontrivial representation assignments of matter fields are considered, and the most general form of fermion mass matrices are given. The phenomenologically viable models with the lowest number of free parameters together with the results of fit are presented. We find out nine lepton models with seven real free parameters including the real and imaginary parts …
We carry out a systematic analysis of flavor mixing and CP violation in the conceptually interesting limit where two quarks or leptons of the same charge are degenerate in mass. We pay some particular attention to the impact of neutrino mass degeneracy and Majorana phase degeneracy on the lepton flavor mixing matrix.
It is shown that a simple breaking of the subnuclear democracy leads to a successful description of the mixing between the second and third family. In the lepton channel the $ν_{μ} - ν_{τ}$ oscillations are expected to be described by a mixing angle of $2.65^ {\circ }$ which might be observed soon in neutrino experiments.
A SUSY SO(10) $\times A_4$ GUT model is constructed for fermion masses and mixing by introducing a minimal set of low dimensional Higgs representations needed to break the guage symmetry down to $SU(3)_c \times U(1)_{em}$. The hierarchy of fermion masses can be understood in the framework of $A_4$ symmetry. From the $A_4$-invariant superpotential, the "double lopsided" mass matrices for the charged leptons and the down quarks are obtained. It is shown that this structure leads to bi-large neutrino mixings simultaneously with small CKM mixing angles. An excellent fit to the masses and mixings o…
We study a class of models for tri-bimaximal neutrino mixing in SO(10) grand unified SUSY framework. Neutrino masses arise from both type-I and type-II seesaw mechanisms. We use dimension five operators in order to not spoil tri-bimaximal mixing by means of type-I contribution in the neutrino sector. We show that it is possible to fit all fermion masses and mixings including also the recent T2K result as deviation from the tri-bimaximal.
We propose a predictive inert 2 Higgs doublet model, where the Standard Model (SM) symmetry is extended by $S_{3}\otimes Z_{2}\otimes Z_{12}$ and the field content is enlarged by extra scalar fields, charged exotic fermions and two heavy right-handed Majorana neutrinos. The charged exotic fermions generate a nontrivial quark mixing and provide one-loop-level masses for the first- and second-generation charged fermions. The masses of the light active neutrinos are generated from a one loop-level radiative seesaw mechanism. Our model successfully explains the observed SM fermion mass and mixing …
Fermion masses and mixing, both in the quark and leptonic sector, are discussed within the approach to the Yukawa puzzle proposed by Arkani-Hamed and Schmaltz. In the quark sector we have shown that at least two extra dimensions are necessary in order to obtain sufficient CP violation, while reproducing the correct quark mass spectrum and mixing angles. We have also studied the consequences of suppressing lepton number violating charged lepton decays within this scenario for lepton masses and mixing angles.
A framework for predicting charged fermion masses in supersymmetric grand unified theories is extended to make predictions in the neutrino sector. Eight new predictions are made, and their relevance to neutrino oscillation experiments and the solar neutrino problem are discussed.
We show that the main features of the pattern of fermion masses and mixing can be expressed in terms of simple relations among weak-basis invariants. In the quark sector, we identify the weak-basis invariants which signal the observed alignment of the up and down quark mass matrices in flavour space. In the lepton sector, we indicate how a set of conditions on weak-basis invariants can lead to an approximate tribimaximal lepton mixing matrix. We also show the usefulness of these invariants in the study of specific ansätze for the flavour structure of fermion mass matrices.
We show that 1-loop transitions between two quasi-degenerate fermions can induce a potentially large renormalization of their mixing angle, and a large renormalized Cabibbo (or PMNS) angle when the second fermion pair in the same two generations is far from degeneracy. At the resonance, the "Cabibbo angle" gets maximal and simply connected to masses without invoking any new physics beyond the standard model. This solution appears as the only one "perturbatively stable" (mixing angles are then renormalized with respect to their classical values by small amounts).
SO(10) grand unified theory seems to have all the ingredients to be a complete unified theory of quarks and leptons. I review here its minimal, possibly realistic versions, both supersymmetric and not.
We show that, unlike mass matrices, the fermionic gauge currents of the Standard Model exhibit, at the quantum level, remarkable SU(2)_f flavor properties at the observed values of the mixing angles. They accommodate all measured mixing for three families of quarks, and, for neutrinos, maximal theta_{23}, quark-lepton complementarity tan(2 theta_c)=1/2 <--> \tan (2 theta_{12})=2, and a not so small sin^2(2 theta_{13}) = .267 within the present 90% c.l. interval of the T2K experiment.
We present an SU(9) model of family unification with three light chiral families, and a natural hierarchy of charged fermion masses and mixings. The existence of singlet right handed neutrions with masses about two orders of magnitude smaller than the GUT scale, as needed to understand the light neutrinos masses via the see-saw mechanism, is compelling in our model.
We present a complete analysis of the fermion masses and mixing matrices in the framework of the little flavon model. In this model textures are generated by coupling the fermions to scalar fields, the little flavons, that are pseudo-Goldstone bosons of the breaking of a global SU(6) symmetry. The Yukawa couplings arise from the vacuum expectation values of the flavon fields, their sizes controlled by a potential a la Coleman-Weinberg. Quark and lepton mass hierarchies and mixing angles are accomodated within the effective approach in a natural manner.
The problem of fermion masses and mixings is discussed in the context of supersymmetric grand unification theories. Some predictive frameworks based on the $SU(5)$, $SO(10)$ and $SU(6)$ models are reviewed. We propose a multiscalar singlet extension of the singlet-triplet Higgs model capable of explaining the SM fermion mass spectrum and mixing parameters. Our model is based on the $Δ\left( 27\right) $ family symmetry, supplemented by cyclic symmetries, which are spontaneously broken thus yielding the observed hierarchy of the SM charged fermion masses and quark mixing angles. The masses of the light active neutrinos are produced by type-II seesaw mechanism mediated by the neutral component of the $SU(2)_{L}$ scalar triplet. The model symmetries lead to the extended Gatto-Sartori-Tonin relations …
We discuss our recently proposed S3(down)xS3(up) flavour-permutation-symmetric mixing observables, giving expressions for them in terms of (moduli-squared) of the mixing matrix elements. We outline their successful use in providing flavour-symmetric descriptions of (non-flavour-symmetric) lepton mixing schemes. We develop our partially unified flavour-symmetric description of both quark and lepton mixings, providing testable predictions for CP-violating phases in both B decays and neutrino oscillations.
The new contributions to the electron (muon) anomalous magnetic moment arising in mirror fermion theories have been calculated. Imposing the experimental constraint lowers the current upper bound on the ordinary - mirror lepton mixing angles by a factor of 50 making predictions for mirror lepton production at HERA undetectably small. A way out is to allow for different mixing angles of the L and R field components. Choosing very small right mixing angles compatibility with the anomalous magnetic moment measurement may be easily maintained, while choosing left mixing angles close to the upper l…
We discuss fermion masses and mixings in models derived from orbifold GUTs such that gauge coupling unification is achieved without low energy supersymmetry by utilizing a non-canonical U(1)_Y. A gauged U(1)_X flavor symmetry plays an essential role, and the Green-Schwarz mechanism is invoked in anomaly cancellations. Models containing vector-like particles with masses close to M_{GUT} are also discussed.
We propose that the radiative generation of the neutrino mass can be achieved by incorporating the kinetic mixing of fermion fields which arises radiatively at one-loop level. As a demonstrative example of the application of the mechanism, we present the particular case of the Standard Model extension by $U(1)_D$ symmetry. As a result, we show how neutrino masses can be generated via a kinetic mixing portal instead of a mass matrix with residual symmetries responsible for the stability of multicomponent dark matter.
