Non divergence-free discretisations for the incompressible Stokes problem may suffer from a lack of pressure-robustness characterised by large discretisations errors due to irrotational forces in the momentum balance. This paper argues that also divergence-free virtual element methods (VEM) on polygonal meshes are not really pressure-robust as long as the right-hand side is not discretised in a careful manner. To be able to evaluate the right-hand side for the test functions, some explicit interpolation of the virtual test functions is needed that can be evaluated pointwise everywhere. The standard discretisation via an $L^2$-best approximation does not preserve the divergence and so destroys the orthogonality between divergence-free test functions and possibly eminent gradient forces in the right-hand side. To repair this orthogonality and restore pressure-robustness another divergence-preserving reconstruction is suggested based on Raviart-Thomas approximations on local subtriangulations of the polygons. All findings are proven theoretically and are demonstrated numerically in two dimensions. The construction is also interesting for hybrid high-order methods on polygonal or polyhedral meshes.
The Virtual Element Method (VEM) is a Galerkin approximation method that extends the Finite Element Method (FEM) to polytopal meshes. In this paper, we present a conforming formulation that generalizes the Scott-Vogelius finite element method for the numerical approximation of the Stokes problem to polygonal meshes in the framework of the virtual element method. In particular, we consider a straightforward application of the virtual element approximation space for scalar elliptic problems to the vector case and approximate the pressure variable through discontinuous polynomials. We assess the …
In a plane polygon $P$ with straight sides, we prove analytic regularity of the Leray-Hopf solution of the stationary, viscous, and incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. We assume small data, analytic volume force and no-slip boundary conditions. Analytic regularity is quantified in so-called countably normed, corner-weighted spaces with homogeneous norms. Implications of this analytic regularity include exponential smallness of Kolmogorov $N$-widths of solutions, exponential convergence rates of mixed $hp$-discontinuous Galerkin finite element and spectral element discretizations and of mod…
In this paper, we study the biharmonic equation with Dirichlet boundary conditions in a polygonal domain. In particular, we propose a method that effectively decouples the fourth-order problem into a system of two Poison equations and one Stokes equation, or a system of one Stokes equation and one Poisson equation. It is shown that the solution of each system is equivalent to that of the original fourth-order problem on both convex and non-convex polygonal domains. Two finite element algorithms are in turn proposed to solve the decoupled systems. In addition, we show the regularity of the solu…

In two dimensions, we propose and analyze an a posteriori error estimator for finite element approximations of the stationary Navier Stokes equations with singular sources on Lipschitz, but not necessarily convex, polygonal domains. Under a smallness assumption on the continuous and discrete solutions, we prove that the devised error estimator is reliable and locally efficient. We illustrate the theory with numerical examples.
First-order convergence in time and space is proved for a fully discrete semi-implicit finite element method for the two-dimensional Navier--Stokes equations with $L^2$ initial data in convex polygonal domains, without extra regularity assumptions or grid-ratio conditions. The proof utilises the smoothing properties of the Navier--Stokes equations, an appropriate duality argument, and the smallness of the numerical solution in the discrete $L^2(0,t_m;H^1)$ norm when $t_m$ is smaller than some constant. Numerical examples are provided to support the theoretical analysis.
In this paper we propose a pressure robust staggered discontinuous Galerkin method for the Stokes equations on general polygonal meshes by using piecewise constant approximations. We modify the right hand side of the body force in the discrete formulation by exploiting divergence preserving velocity reconstruction operator, which is the crux for pressure independent velocity error estimates. The optimal convergence for velocity gradient, velocity and pressure are proved. In addition, we are able to prove the superconvergence of velocity approximation by the incorporation of divergence preservi…
We analyse the p- and hp-versions of the virtual element method (VEM) for the the Stokes problem on a polygonal domain. The key tool in the analysis is the existence of a bijection between Poisson-like and Stokes-like VE spaces for the velocities. This allows us to re-interpret the standard VEM for Stokes as a VEM, where the test and trial discrete velocities are sought in Poisson-like VE spaces. The upside of this fact is that we inherit from [7] an explicit analysis of best interpolation results in VE spaces, as well as stabilization estimates that are explicit in terms of the degree of accu…
A new discontinuous Galerkin finite element method for the Stokes equations is developed in the primary velocity-pressure formulation. This method employs discontinuous polynomials for both velocity and pressure on general polygonal/polyhedral meshes. Most finite element methods with discontinuous approximation have one or more stabilizing terms for velocity and for pressure to guarantee stability and convergence. This new finite element method has the standard conforming finite element formulation, without any velocity or pressure stabilizers. Optimal-order error estimates are established for…
The virtual element method (VEM) is a Galerkin approximation method that extends the finite element method to polytopal meshes. In this paper, we present two different conforming virtual element formulations for the numerical approximation of the Stokes problem that work on polygonal meshes. The velocity vector field is approximated in the virtual element spaces of the two formulations, while the pressure variable is approximated through discontinuous polynomials. Both formulations are inf-sup stable and convergent with optimal convergence rates in the $L^2$ and energy norm. We assess the effec…
We present a stability analysis of the Discontinuous Galerkin method on polygonal and polyhedral meshes (PolyDG) for the Stokes problem. In particular, we analyze the discrete inf-sup condition for different choices of the polynomial approximation order of the velocity and pressure approximation spaces. To this aim, we employ a generalized inf-sup condition with a pressure stabilization term. We also prove a priori hp-version error estimates in suitable norms. We numerically check the behaviour of the inf-sup constant and the order of convergence with respect to the mesh configuration, the mes…
The nonconforming Morley-type virtual element method for the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations formulated in terms of the stream-function on simply connected polygonal domains (not necessarily convex) is designed. A rigorous analysis by using a new enriching operator is developed. More precisely, by employing such operator, we provide novel discrete Sobolev embeddings, which allow to establish the well-posedness of the discrete scheme and obtain optimal error estimates in broken $H^2$-, $H^1$- and $L^2$-norms under minimal regularity condition on the weak solution. The velocity and vortic…
In this paper, we design and analyze staggered discontinuous Galerkin methods of arbitrary polynomial orders for the stationary Navier-Stokes equations on polygonal meshes. The exact divergence-free condition for the velocity is satisfied without any postprocessing. The resulting method is pressure-robust so that the pressure approximation does not influence the velocity approximation. A new nonlinear convective term that earning non-negativity is proposed. The optimal convergence estimates for all the variables in $L^2$ norm are proved. Also, assuming that the rotational part of the forcing t…

In this paper, we propose a new stabilizer free and pressure robust WG method for the Stokes equations with super-convergence on polytopal mesh in the primary velocity-pressure formulation. Convergence rates with one order higher than the optimal-order for velocity in both energy-norm and the $L^2$-norm and for pressure in $L^2$-norm are proved in our proposed scheme. The $H$(div)-preserving operator has been constructed based on the polygonal mesh for arbitrary polynomial degrees and employed in the body source assembling to break the locking phenomenon induced by poor mass conservation in th…
In this paper we propose a novel staggered discontinuous Galerkin method for the Brinkman problem on general quadrilateral and polygonal meshes. The proposed method is robust in the Stokes and Darcy limits, in addition, hanging nodes can be automatically incorporated in the construction of the method, which are desirable features in practical applications. There are three unknowns involved in our formulation, namely velocity gradient, velocity and pressure. Unlike the original staggered DG formulation proposed for the Stokes equations in \cite{KimChung13}, we relax the tangential continuity of…

The Virtual Element Method (VEM) is a new family of numerical methods for the approximation of partial differential equations, where the geometry of the polytopal mesh elements can be very general. The aim of this article is to extend the balancing domain decomposition by constraints (BDDC) preconditioner to the solution of the saddle-point linear system arising from a VEM discretization of the two-dimensional Stokes equations. Under suitable hypotesis on the choice of the primal unknowns, the preconditioned linear system results symmetric and positive definite, thus the preconditioned conjuga…
In this paper we develop a staggered discontinuous Galerkin method for the Stokes and Darcy-Forchheimer problems coupled with the \Red{Beavers-Joseph-Saffman} conditions. The method is defined by imposing staggered continuity for all the variables involved and the interface conditions are enforced by switching the roles of the variables met on the interface, which eliminate the hassle of introducing additional variables. This method can be flexibly applied to rough grids such as the highly distorted grids and the polygonal grids. In addition, the method allows nonmatching grids on the interfac…

We study, both theoretically and numerically, the equilibrium of a hinged rigid leaflet with an attached rotational spring, immersed in a stationary incompressible fluid within a rigid channel. Through a careful investigation of the properties of the functional describing the angular momentum exerted by the fluid on the leaflet (which depends on both the leaflet angular position and its thickness), we identify sufficient conditions on the spring stiffness function for the existence (and uniqueness) of equilibrium positions. We propose a numerical technique that exploits the mesh flexibility of…
