We report on a rigorous operator-algebraic renormalization group scheme and construct the continuum free field as the scaling limit of Hamiltonian lattice systems using wavelet theory. A renormalization group step is determined by the scaling equation identifying lattice observables with the continuum field smeared by compactly supported wavelets. Causality follows from Lieb-Robinson bounds for harmonic lattice systems. The scheme is related with the multi-scale entanglement renormalization ansatz and augments the semi-continuum limit of quantum systems.
We present a rigorous renormalization group scheme for lattice quantum field theories in terms of operator algebras. The renormalization group is considered as an inductive system of scaling maps between lattice field algebras. We construct scaling maps for scalar lattice fields using Daubechies' wavelets, and show that the inductive limit of free lattice ground states exists and the limit state extends to the familiar massive continuum free field, with the continuum action of spacetime translations. In particular, lattice fields are identified with the continuum field smeared with Daubechies'…
Entanglement renormalization is a unitary real-space renormalization scheme. The corresponding quantum circuits or tensor networks are known as MERA, and they are particularly well-suited to describing quantum systems at criticality. In this work we show how to construct Gaussian bosonic quantum circuits that implement entanglement renormalization for ground states of arbitrary free bosonic chains. The construction is based on wavelet theory, and the dispersion relation of the Hamiltonian is translated into a filter design problem. We give a general algorithm that approximately solves this des…
Using continuous wavelet transform it is possible to construct a regularization procedure for scale-dependent quantum field theory models, which is complementary to functional renormalization group method in the sense that it sums up the fluctuations of larger scales in order to get the effective action at small observation scale (M.V.Altaisky, Phys. Rev. D93(2016) 105043. The standard RG results for $ϕ^4$ model are reproduced. The fixed points of the scale-dependent theory are studied in one loop approximation.
We construct entanglement renormalization schemes which provably approximate the ground states of non-interacting fermion nearest-neighbor hopping Hamiltonians on the one-dimensional discrete line and the two-dimensional square lattice. These schemes give hierarchical quantum circuits which build up the states from unentangled degrees of freedom. The circuits are based on pairs of discrete wavelet transforms which are approximately related by a "half-shift": translation by half a unit cell. The presence of the Fermi surface in the two-dimensional model requires a special kind of circuit archit…
I present an example of how to analytically optimize a multiscale entanglement renormalization ansatz for a finite antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain. For this purpose, a quantum-circuit representation is taken into account, and we construct the exactly entangled ground state so that a trivial IR state is modified sequentially by operating separated entangler layers (monodromy operators) at each scale. The circuit representation allows us to make a simple understanding of close relationship between the entanglement renormalization and quantum integrability. We find that the entangler should ma…
We advocate the use of Daubechies wavelets as a basis for treating a variety of problems in quantum field theory. This basis has both natural large volume and short distance cutoffs, has natural partitions of unity, and the basis functions are all related to the fixed point of a linear renormalization group equation.
This paper aims at presenting the first steps towards a formulation of the Exact Renormalization Group Equation in the Hopf algebra setting of Connes and Kreimer. It mostly deals with some algebraic preliminaries allowing to formulate perturbative renormalization within the theory of differential equations. The relation between renormalization, formulated as a change of boundary condition for a differential equation, and an algebraic Birkhoff decomposition for rooted trees is explicited.
In the context of massless quantum electrodynamics (QED) with a linear covariant gauge fixing, the connection between the counterterm and the Hopf-algebraic approach to renormalization is examined. The coproduct formula of Green's functions contains two invariant charges, which give rise to different renormalization group functions. All formulas are tested by explicit computations to third loop order. The possibility of a finite electron self-energy by fixing a generalized linear covariant gauge is discussed. An analysis of subdivergences leads to the conclusion that such a gauge only exists i…
Wavelets, known to be useful in non-linear multi-scale processes and in multi-resolution analysis, are shown to have a q-deformed algebraic structure. The translation and dilation operators of the theory associate with any scaling equation a non-linear, two parameter algebra. This structure can be mapped onto the quantum group $su_{q}(2)$ in one limit, and approaches a Fourier series generating algebra, in another limit. A duality between any scaling function and its corresponding non-linear algebra is obtained. Examples for the Haar and B-wavelets are worked out in detail.
The structure of overlapping subdivergences, which appear in the perturbative expansions of quantum field theory, is analyzed using algebraic lattice theory. It is shown that for specific QFTs the sets of subdivergences of Feynman diagrams form algebraic lattices. This class of QFTs includes the Standard model. In kinematic renormalization schemes, in which tadpole diagrams vanish, these lattices are semimodular. This implies that the Hopf algebra of Feynman diagrams is graded by the coradical degree or equivalently that every maximal forest has the same length in the scope of BPHZ renormaliza…
A new formalism for the perturbative construction of algebraic quantum field theory is developed. The formalism allows the treatment of low dimensional theories and of non-polynomial interactions. We discuss the connection between the Stueckelberg-Petermann renormalization group which describes the freedom in the perturbative construction with the Wilsonian idea of theories at different scales . In particular we relate the approach to renormalization in terms of Polchinski's Flow Equation to the Epstein-Glaser method. We also show that the renormalization group in the sense of Gell-Mann-Low (w…
In this paper I give an overview of mathematical structures appearing in perturbative algebraic quantum field theory (pAQFT) in the case of the massless scalar field on Minkowski spacetime. I also show how these relate to Kontsevich-Zagier periods. Next, I review the pAQFT version of the renormalization group flow and reformulate it in terms of Feynman graphs. This allows me to relate Kontsevich-Zagier periods to numbers appearing in computing the pAQFT $β$-function.
This paper is devoted to the study of renormalization of the quartic melonic tensor model in dimension (=rank) five. We review the perturbative renormalization and the computation of the one loop beta function, confirming the asymptotic freedom of the model. We then define the Connes-Kreimer-like Hopf algebra describing the combinatorics of the renormalization of this model and we analyze in detail, at one- and two-loop levels, the Hochschild cohomology allowing to write the combinatorial Dyson-Schwinger equations. Feynman tensor graph Hopf subalgebras are also exhibited.
The perturbative approach to nonlinear Sigma models and the associated renormalization group flow are discussed within the framework of Euclidean algebraic quantum field theory and of the principle of general local covariance. In particular we show in an Euclidean setting how to define Wick ordered powers of the underlying quantum fields and we classify the freedom in such procedure by extending to this setting a recent construction of Khavkine, Melati and Moretti for vector valued free fields. As a by-product of such classification, we prove that, at first order in perturbation theory, the re…
In the present paper, which is a mathematical follow--up of [16] taking inspiration from [11], we present an abstract formulation of exact renormalization group (RG) in the framework of Batalin--Vilkovisky (BV) algebra theory. In the first part, we work out a general algebraic and geometrical theory of BV algebras, canonical maps, flows and flow stabilizers. In the second part, relying on this formalism, we build a BV algebraic theory of the RG. In line with the graded geometric outlook of our approach, we adjoin the RG scale with an odd parameter and analyse in depth the implications of the r…
This masters thesis reviews the algebraic formulation of renormalization using Hopf algebras as pioneered by Dirk Kreimer and applies it to a toy model of quantum field theory given through iterated insertions of a single primitive divergence into itself. Using this example in a subtraction scheme, we exhibit the renormalized Feynman rules to yield Hopf algebra morphisms into the Hopf algebra of polynomials and as a consequence study the emergence of the renormalization group in connection with combinatorial Dyson-Schwinger equations. In particular we relate the perturbative expansion of the a…
In this series of eight papers we present the applications of methods from wavelet analysis to polynomial approximations for a number of accelerator physics problems. In this part we consider orbital motion in transverse plane for a single particle in a circular magnetic lattice in case when we take into account multipolar expansion up to an arbitrary finite number. We reduce initial dynamical problem to the finite number (equal to the number of n-poles) of standard algebraical problem and represent all dynamical variables via an expansion in the base of periodical wavelets.
The multiscale entanglement renormalization ansatz describes quantum many-body states by a hierarchical entanglement structure organized by length scale. Numerically, it has been demonstrated to capture critical lattice models and the data of the corresponding conformal field theories with high accuracy. However, a rigorous understanding of its success and precise relation to the continuum is still lacking. To address this challenge, we provide an explicit construction of entanglement-renormalization quantum circuits that rigorously approximate correlation functions of the massless Dirac confo…
We formulate the Hopf algebraic approach of Connes and Kreimer to renormalization in perturbative quantum field theory using triangular matrix representation. We give a Rota-Baxter anti-homomorphism from general regularized functionals on the Feynman graph Hopf algebra to triangular matrices with entries in a Rota-Baxter algebra. For characters mapping to the group of unipotent triangular matrices we derive the algebraic Birkhoff decomposition for matrices using Spitzer's identity. This simple matrix factorization is applied to characterize and calculate perturbative renormalization.
This article aims at advancing the recently introduced exponential method for renormalisation in perturbative quantum field theory. It is shown that this new procedure provides a meaningful recursive scheme in the context of the algebraic and group theoretical approach to renormalisation. In particular, we describe in detail a Hopf algebraic formulation of Bogoliubov's classical R-operation and counterterm recursion in the context of momentum subtraction schemes. This approach allows us to propose an algebraic classification of different subtraction schemes. Our results shed light on the pecul…
A braiding operation defines a real-space renormalization group for anyonic chains. The resulting renormalization group flow can be used to define a quantum scaling limit by operator-algebraic renormalization. It is illustrated how this works for the Ising chain, also known as transverse-field Ising model. In this case, the quantum scaling limit results in the vacuum state of the well-known Ising CFT. Distinguishing between the braiding and its inverse is directly related to the chiral sectors of the Ising CFT. This has direct implications for the simulation of CFTs on topological quantum comp…
This article is an extension of the author's second master thesis [1]. It aims to introduce to the theory of perturbatively quantized General Relativity coupled to Spinor Electrodynamics, provide the results thereof and set the notation to serve as a starting point for further research in this direction. It includes the differential geometric and Hopf algebraic background, as well as the corresponding Lagrange density and some renormalization theory. Then, a particular problem in the renormalization of Quantum General Relativity coupled to Quantum Electrodynamics is addressed and solved by a g…
Motivated by recent work of Connes and Marcolli, based on the Connes-Kreimer approach to renormalization, we augment the latter by a combinatorial, Lie algebraic point of view. Our results rely both on the properties of the Dynkin idempotent, one of the fundamental Lie idempotents in the theory of free Lie algebras, and on properties of Hopf algebras encapsulated in the notion of associated descent algebras. Besides leading very directly to proofs of the main combinatorial aspects of the renormalization procedures, the new techniques give rise to an algebraic approach to the Galois theory of r…
Block spin renormalization group is the main tool used in our program to see symmetry breaking in a weakly interacting many Boson system on a three dimensional lattice at low temperature. In this paper, we discuss some of its purely algebraic aspects in an abstract setting. For example, we derive some "well known" identities like the composition rule and the relation between critical fields and background fields.
This paper continues our previous study of Feynman integrals in configuration spaces and their algebro-geometric and motivic aspects. We consider here both massless and massive Feynman amplitudes, from the point of view of potential theory. We consider a variant of the wonderful compactification of configuration spaces that works simultaneously for all graphs with a given number of vertices and that also accounts for the external structure of Feynman graph. As in our previous work, we consider two version of the Feynman amplitude in configuration space, which we refer to as the real and comple…
We give a simple presentation of the combinatorics of renormalization in perturbative quantum field theory in terms of triangular matrices. The prescription, that may be of calculational value, is derived from first principles, to wit, the ``Birkhoff decomposition'' in the Hopf-algebraic description of renormalization by Connes and Kreimer.
In a previous paper "Anomalies in Quantum Field Theory and Cohomologies of Configuration Spaces" (arXiv:0903.0187) we presented a new method for renormalization in Euclidean configuration spaces based on certain renormalization maps. This approach is aimed to serve for developing an algebraic algorithm for computing the Gell--Mann--Low renormalization group action. In the present work we introduce a modification of the theory of renormalization maps for the case of Minkowski space and we give the way how it is combined with the causal perturbation theory.
Some work in progress is announced, on the use of algebraic geometry, mostly concerning elliptic curve theory, to model turbulence. Attention is given to flows across the scales, on some convenient model space, and some current trials are exposed, where one seeks for an ordinal correlation between the escape rates of some L functions and a proper observable on these mentioned flows across the scales.
We describe the Hopf algebraic structure of Feynman graphs for non-abelian gauge theories, and prove compatibility of the so-called Slavnov-Taylor identities with the coproduct. When these identities are taken into account, the coproduct closes on the Green's functions, which thus generate a Hopf subalgebra.
We present the applications of variation -- wavelet analysis to polynomial/rational approximations for orbital motion in transverse plane for a single particle in a circular magnetic lattice in case when we take into account multipolar expansion up to an arbitrary finite number and additional kick terms. We reduce initial dynamical problem to the finite number (equal to the number of n-poles) of standard algebraical problems. We have the solution as a multiresolution (multiscales) expansion in the base of compactly supported wavelet basis.
This short note aims to describe the deformations of QFTs and give an action of the same pro-algebraic group $U^*$ which appears in Connes-Marcolli's setting, on the finite QFTs constructed by Epstein-Glaser renormalization scheme.
We present a novel framework for the study of a large class of non-linear stochastic PDEs, which is inspired by the algebraic approach to quantum field theory. The main merit is that, by realizing random fields within a suitable algebra of functional-valued distributions, we are able to use techniques proper of microlocal analysis which allow us to discuss renormalization and its associated freedomw without resorting to any regularization scheme and to the subtraction of infinities. As an example of the effectiveness of the approach we apply it to the perturbative analysis of the stochastic $Φ…
Central in the Hopf algebra approach to the renormalization of perturbative quantum field theory of Connes and Kreimer is their Algebraic Birkhoff Decomposition. In this tutorial article, we introduce their decomposition and prove it by the Atkinson Factorization in Rota-Baxter algebra. We then give some applications of this decomposition in the study of divergent integrals and multiple zeta values.
