We study the out-of-equilibrium properties of a classical integrable non-relativistic theory, with a time evolution initially prepared with a finite energy density in the thermodynamic limit. The theory considered here is the Non-Linear Schrodinger equation which describes the dynamics of the one-dimensional interacting Bose gas in the regime of high occupation numbers. The main emphasis is on the determination of the late-time Generalised Gibbs Ensemble (GGE), which can be efficiently semi-numerically computed on arbitrary initial states, completely solving the famous quench problem in the classical regime. We take advantage of known results in the quantum model and the semiclassical limit to achieve new exact results for the momenta of the density operator on arbitrary GGEs, which we successfully compare with ab-initio numerical simulations. Furthermore, we determine the whole probability distribution of the density operator (full counting statistics), whose exact expression is still out of reach in the quantum model.
In this paper the quantum hydrodynamic equation describing the collective, low energy excitations of a dilute atomic Bose gas in a given trapping potential is investigated with the JWKB semiclassical method. In the case of spherically symmetric harmonic confining potential a good agreement is shown between the semiclassical and the exact energy eigenvalues as well as wave functions. It is also demonstrated that for larger quantum numbers the calculation of the semiclassical wave function is numerically more stable than the exact polynomial with large alternating coefficients.
Using a field-theoretic approach, we systematically generalize the usual semiclassical approximation for a harmonically trapped ideal Bose gas in such a way that its range of applicability is essentially extended. With this we can analytically calculate thermodynamic properties even for small particle numbers. In particular, it now becomes possible to determine the critical temperature as well as the temperature dependence of both heat capacity and condensate fraction in low-dimensional traps, where the standard semiclassical approximation is not even applicable.
We discuss the quasi two-dimensional trapped Bose gas where the thermal occupation of excited states in the tightly confined direction is small but remains finite in the thermodynamic limit. We show that the semiclassical theory describes very accurately the density profile obtained by Quantum Monte Carlo calculations in the normal phase above the Kosterlitz--Thouless temperature T_KT, but differs strongly from the predictions of strictly two-dimensional mean-field theory, even at relatively high temperature. We discuss the relevance of our findings for analyzing ultra-cold-atom experiments in…
A generalization of the semiclassical approximation is suggested allowing for an essential extension of its region of applicability. In particular, it becomes possible to describe Bose-Einstein condensation of a trapped gas in low-dimensional traps and in traps of low confining dimensions, for which the standard semiclassical approximation is not applicable. The results of the modified approach are shown to coincide with purely quantum-mechanical calculations for harmonic traps, including the one-dimensional harmonic trap. The advantage of the semiclassical approximation is in its simplicity a…
We reinvestigate the Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) thermodynamics of a weakly interacting dilute Bose gas under the action of a trap using a semiclassical two-fluid mean-field model in order to find the domain of applicability of the model. Such a model is expected to break down once the condition of diluteness and weak interaction is violated. We find that this breakdown happens for values of coupling and density near the present experimental scenario of BEC. With the increase of the interaction coupling and density the model may lead to unphysical results for thermodynamic observables.
The oscillation frequencies of collective excitations of a trapped Bose-Einstein condensate, when calculated in the mean-field approximation and in the Thomas-Fermi limit, are independent of the scattering length $a$. We calculate the leading corrections to the frequencies from quantum fluctuations around the mean field. The semiclassical correction is proportional to $N^{1/5} a^{6/5}$, where $N$ is the number of atoms in the condensate. The correction is positive semidefinite and is zero for surface modes whose eigenfunctions have a vanishing laplacian. The shift in the frequency of the lowes…
In this paper, we investigate the thermodynamic behavior of a rotating Bose-Einstein condensation with non-zero interatomic interactions theoretically. The analysis relies on a semiclassical Hartree-Fock approximation where an integral is performed over the phase space and function of the grand canonical ensemble is derived. Subsequently, we use this result to derive several thermodynamic quantities including the condensate fraction, critical temperature, entropy and heat capacity. Thereby, we investigate the effect of the rotation rate and interactions parameter on the thermodynamic behavior.…
We analyze the spectrum of the 3-site Bose-Hubbard model with periodic boundary conditions using a semiclassical method. The Bohr-Sommerfeld quantization is applied to an effective classical Hamiltonian which we derive using resonance normal form theory. The derivation takes into account the 1:1 resonance between frequencies of a linearized classical system, and brings nonlinear terms into a corresponding normal form. The obtained expressions reproduce the exact low-energy spectrum of the system remarkably well even for a small number of particles N corresponding to fillings of just two partic…
We analyze the time evolution of the Bose-Hubbard model after a sudden quantum quench to a weakly interacting regime. Specifically, motivated by a recent experiment at Kyoto University, we numerically simulate redistribution of the kinetic and onsite-interaction energies at an early time, which was observed in non-equilibrium dynamics of ultracold Bose gases in a cubic optical lattice starting with a singly-occupied Mott-insulator state. In order to compute the short-time dynamics corresponding to the experimental situation, we apply the truncated-Wigner approximation (TWA) to the Bose-Hubbard…
We analyze the Bogoliubov spectrum of the 3-sites Bose-Hubbard model with finite number of Bose particles by using a semiclassical approach. The Bogoliubov spectrum is shown to be associated with the low-energy regular component of the classical Hubbard model. We identify the full set of the integrals of motions of this regular component and, quantizing them, obtain the energy levels of the quantum system. The critical values of the energy, above which the regular Bogoliubov spectrum evolves into a chaotic spectrum, is indicated as well.
We theoretically examine equilibrium properties of the harmonically trapped ideal Bose and Fermi gases in the quantum degeneracy regime. We analyze thermodynamic characteristics of gases with a finite number of atoms by means of the known semiclassical approach and perform comparison with exact numerical results. For a Fermi gas, we demonstrate deviations in the Fermi energy values originating from a discrete level structure and show that these are observable only for a small number of particles. For a Bose gas, we observe characteristic softening of phase transition features, which contrasts …
We discuss the effect of dissipation on heating which occurs in periodically driven quantum many body systems. We especially focus on a periodically driven Bose-Hubbard model coupled to an energy and particle reservoir. Without dissipation, this model is known to undergo parametric instabilities which can be considered as an initial stage of heating. By taking the weak on-site interaction limit as well as the weak system-reservoir coupling limit, we find that parametric instabilities are suppressed if the dissipation is stronger than the on-site interaction strength and stable steady states ap…
The existence of superfluidity in a 3D Bose-gas can depend on boundary interactions with channel walls. We study a simple model where the dilute moving Bose-gas interacts with the walls via hard-core repulsion. Special boundary excitations are introduced, and their excitation spectrum is calculated within a semiclassical approximation. It turns out that the state of the moving Bose-gas is unstable with respect to the creation of these boundary excitations in the system gas + walls, i.e. the critical velocity vanishes in the semiclassical (Bogoliubov) approximation. We discuss how a condensate …
We discuss the effect of inter-atoms interactions on the condensation temperature $T_c$ of an atomic laboratory trapped Bose-Einstein condensate. We show that, in the mean-field Hartree-Fock and semiclassical approximations, interactions produce a shift $ΔT_{c}/T_{c}^{0} \approx b_1 (a/λ_{T_c}) + b_2 (a/λ_{T_c})^2 + ψ[a/λ_{T_c}]$ with $a$ the s-wave scattering length, $λ_T$ the thermal wavelength and $ψ[a/λ_{T_c}]$ a non-analytic function such that $ψ[0] = ψ'[0] = ψ"[0] = 0$ and $|ψ"'[0]| = \infty$. Therefore, with no more assumptions than Hartree-Fock and semiclassical approximations, interac…
We investigate the stability and critical velocity of a weakly interacting Bose gas flowing in a random potential. By applying the Bogoliubov theory to a disordered Bose system with a steady flow, the condensate density and the superfluid density are determined as functions of the disorder strength, flow velocity, and temperature. The critical velocity, at which the steady flow becomes unstable, is calculated from the spectrum of hydrodynamic excitation. We also show that in two dimensions the critical velocity strongly depends on the system size.
We present a semiclassical two-fluid model for an interacting Bose gas confined in an anisotropic harmonic trap and solve it in the experimentally relevant region for a spin-polarized gas of Rb-87 atoms, obtaining the temperature dependence of the internal energy and of the condensate fraction. Our results are in agreement with recent experimental observations by Ensher et al.
Using a focused laser beam we stir a $^{87}$Rb Bose-Einstein condensate confined in a magnetic trap. We observe that the steady states of the condensate correspond to an elliptic cloud, stationary in the rotating frame. These steady states depend nonlinearly on the stirring parameters (amplitude and frequency), and various solutions can be reached experimentally depending on the path followed in this parameter space. These states can be dynamically unstable and we observe that such instabilities lead to vortex nucleation in the condensate.
We study the Bose-Einstein condensation of an interacting gas with attractive interaction confined in a harmonic trap using a semiclassical two-fluid mean-field model. The condensed state is described by converged numerical solution of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation. By solving the system of coupled equations of this model iteratively we obtain converged results for the temperature dependencies of the condensate fraction, chemical potential, and internal energy for the Bose-Einstein condensate of $^7$Li atoms.
We present a Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov (HFB) theoretical treatment of the two-dimensional trapped Bose gas and indicate how semiclassical approximations to this and other formalisms have lead to confusion. We numerically obtain results for the fully quantum mechanical HFB theory within the Popov approximation and show that the presence of the trap stabilizes the condensate against long wavelength fluctuations. These results are used to show where phase fluctuations lead to the formation of a quasicondensate.
We compare the semiclassical Hartree-Fock approximation for a trapped Bose gas to a direct Path Integral Quantum Monte Carlo simulation. The chosen parameters correspond to current Rb experiments. We observe corrections to the mean-field density profile. The Path Integral calculation reveals an increase of the number of condensed particles, which is of the same order as a previously computed result for a homogeneous system. We discuss the experimental observability of the effect and propose a method to analyze data of in-situ experiments.
We develop a hybrid semiclassical method to study the time evolution of one dimensional quantum systems in and out of equilibrium. Our method handles internal degrees of freedom completely quantum mechanically by a modified time evolving block decimation method, while treating orbital quasiparticle motion classically. We can follow dynamics up to timescales well beyond the reach of standard numerical methods to observe the crossover between pre-equilibrated and locally phase equilibrated states. As an application, we investigate the quench dynamics and phase fluctuations of a pair of tunnel co…
We use a semiclassical two-fluid model to study the momentum distribution of a Bose-condensed gas with repulsive interactions inside a harmonic trap at finite temperature, with specific focus on atomic hydrogen. We give particular attention to the average kinetic energy, which is almost entirely associated with the thermal cloud. A non-linear dependence of the kinetic energy on temperature is displayed, affording a precise way to assess the temperature of the gas. We also show that the kinetic energy increases with the strength of the interactions, reflecting an enhanced rate of depletion of t…
In a recent experiment, a Bose-Einstein condensate was trapped in an anharmonic potential which is well approximated by a harmonic and a quartic part. The condensate was set into such a fast rotation that the centrifugal force in the corotating frame overcompensates the harmonic part in the plane perpendicular to the rotation axis. Thus, the resulting trap potential became Mexican-hat shaped. We present an analysis for an ideal Bose gas which is confined in such an anharmonic rotating trap within a semiclassical approximation where we calculate the critical temperature, the condensate fraction…
We investigate theoretically a one-dimensional ideal Bose gas that is driven into a steady state far from equilibrium via the coupling to two heat baths: a global bath of temperature $T$ and a "hot needle", a bath of temperature $T_h\gg T$ with localized coupling to the system. Remarkably, this system features a crossover to finite-size Bose condensation at temperatures $T$ that are orders of magnitude larger than the equilibrium condensation temperature. This counterintuitive effect is explained by a suppression of long-wavelength excitations resulting from the competition between both baths.…
The Boltzmann equation is the traditional framework in which one extends the time-dependent mean field classical description of a many-body system to include the effect of particle-particle collisions in an approximate manner. A semiclassical extension of this approach to quantum many body systems was suggested by Uehling and Uhlenbeck in 1933 for both Fermi and Bose statistics, and many further developments of this approach are known as the BoltzmannUehling-Uhlenbeck (BUU) equations. Here I introduce a pure quantum version of the BUU type of equations, which is mathematically equivalent to a …
We set up recursion relations for the partition function and the ground-state occupancy for a fixed number of non-interacting bosons confined in a square box potential and determine the temperature dependence of the specific heat and the particle number in the ground state. A proper semiclassical treatment is set up which yields the correct small-T-behavior in contrast to an earlier theory in Feynman's textbook on Statistical Mechanics, in which the special role of the ground state was ignored. The results are compared with an exact quantum mechanical treatment. Furthermore, we derive the fini…
We investigate Bose-Einstein condensation of trapped spin-1 atoms with ferromagnetic or antiferromagnetic two-body contact interactions. We adopt the mean field theory and develop a Hartree-Fock-Popov type approximation in terms of a semiclassical two-fluid model. For antiferromagnetic interactions, our study reveals double condensations as atoms in the $|m_F=0>$ state never seem to condense under the constraints of both the conservation of total atom number $N$ and magnetization $M$. For ferromagnetic interactions, however, triple condensations can occur. Our results can be conveniently under…
We present a formalism for simulating quantum dynamics of lattice spin-one systems by first introducing local hidden variables and then doing semiclassical (truncated Wigner) approximation in the extended phase space. In this way we exactly take into account the local on-site Hamiltonian and approximately treat spin-spin interactions. In particular, we represent each spin with eight classical SU(3) variables. Three of them represent the usual spin components and five others are hidden variables representing local spin-spin correlations. We compare our formalism with exact quantum dynamics of f…
Thermalization in closed quantum systems can be explained either by means of the eigenstate thermalization hypothesis or the concept of canonical typicality. Both concepts are based on quantum mechanical formalism such as spectral properties of the eigenstates or entanglement between subsystems respectively. Here we study the onset of thermalization of Bose particles in a two-band double well potential using the truncated Wigner approximation. This allows us to use the familiar classical formalism to explain quantum thermalization in this system. In particular, we demonstrate that sampling of …
Using semiclassical approximation method, Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) of a relativistic ideal boson gas (RIBG) with and without antibosons in three-dimensional (3-D) harmonic traps is investigated. The BEC transition temperature T_{c} and the Helmholtz free energy at T_{c} are calculated. The effect of the rest mass of the boson on the properties of the system is also studied. We find that T_{c} of RIBG is higher than that of the nonrelativistic approximation. The RIBG with antibosons is also investigated and it is found that the Helmholtz free energy of the system with antibosons at T_{c…
We use the quantum kinetic theory to calculate the steady state and the fluctuations of a trapped Bose-Einstein condensate at finite temperature. The system is divided in a condensate and a non-condensate part. A quantum mechanical description based on the number conserving Bogoliubov method is used for describing the condensate part. The non-condensed particles are treated as a classical gas in thermal equilibrium with temperature T and chemical potential mu. We find a master equation for the reduced density operator of the Bose-Einstein condensate, calculate the steady state of the system an…
A nonequilibrium master equation analysis for N interacting bosons, with Bogoliubov quasiparticles as the reservoir is presented. The analysis is based on a simplified Hamiltonian. The steady state solution yields the equilibrium density matrix. The results are in good agreement with and extend our previous rigorous canonical ensemble equilibrium statistical treatment leading to a quantum theory of the atom laser.
We consider a model describing Bose-Josephson junction (BJJ) coupled to a single bosonic mode exhibiting quantum phase transition (QPT). Onset of chaos above QPT is observed from semiclassical dynamics as well from spectral statistics. Based on entanglement entropy we analyze the ergodic behavior of eigenstates with increasing energy density which also reveals the influence of dynamical steady state known as $π$-mode on it. We identify the imprint of unstable $π$-oscillation as many body quantum scar (MBQS), which leads to the deviation from ergodicity and quantify the degree of scarring. Pers…
