We review recent results obtained in the scattering theory of dissipative quantum systems representing the long-time evolution of a system $S$ interacting with another system $S'$ and susceptible of being absorbed by $S'$. The effective dynamics of $S$ is generated by an operator of the form $H = H_0 + V - \mathrm{i} C^* C$ on the Hilbert space of the pure states of $S$, where $H_0$ is the self-adjoint generator of the free dynamics of $S$, $V$ is symmetric and $C$ is bounded. The main example is a neutron interacting with a nucleus in the nuclear optical model. We recall the basic objects of the scattering theory for the pair $(H,H_0)$, as well as the results, proven in arXiv:1703.09018 and arXiv:1808.09179, on the spectral singularities of $H$ and the asymptotic completeness of the wave operators. Next, for the nuclear optical model, we show that asymptotic completeness generically holds.
We consider an abstract pseudo-Hamiltonian for the nuclear optical model, given by a dissipative operator of the form $H = H_V - i C^* C$, where $H_V = H_0 + V$ is self-adjoint and $C$ is a bounded operator. We study the wave operators associated to $H$ and $H_0$. We prove that they are asymptotically complete if and only if $H$ does not have spectral singularities on the real axis. For Schrödinger operators, the spectral singularities correspond to real resonances.
Time-dependent scattering theory for a large class of translation invariant models, including the Nelson and Polaron models, restricted to the vacuum and one-particle sectors is studied. We formulate and prove asymptotic completeness for these models. The translation invariance imply that the Hamiltonians considered are fibered with respect to the total momentum. On the way to asymptotic completeness we determine the spectral structure of the fiber Hamiltonians, establish a Mourre estimate and derive a geometric asymptotic completeness statement as an intermediate step.
We review recent results on the existence of asymptotic observables in algebraic QFT. The problem of asymptotic completeness is discussed from this perspective.
We establish the asymptotic completeness in the nonlinear Lamb system for hyperbolic stationary states. For the proof we construct a trajectory of a reduced equation (which is a nonlinear nonautonomous ODE) converging to a hyperbolic stationary point using the Inverse Function Theorem in a Banach space. We give the counterexamples showing nonexistence of such trajectories for nonhyperbolic stationary points.
We consider generalized versions of the massless spin-boson model. Building on the recent work in 'Approach to ground state and time-independent photon bound for massless spin-boson models' (arXiv:1109.5582, Annales H. Poincare, 2012) and 'Propagation bounds and soft photon bounds for the massless spin-boson model' (submitted to arXiv jointly with the present paper), we prove asymptotic completeness.
Under the effect of suitable time-periodic magnetic fields, the velocity of a charged particle grows exponentially in $t$; this phenomenon provides the asymptotic completeness for wave operators with slowly decaying potentials. These facts were shown under some restrictions for time-periodic magnetic fields and the range of wave operators. In this study, we relax these restrictions and finally obtain the asymptotic completeness of wave operators. Additionally, we show them under generalized conditions, which are truly optimal for time-periodic magnetic fields. Moreover, we provide a uniform re…
We show asymptotic completeness for a class of superradiant Klein-Gordon equations. Our results are applied to the Klein-Gordon equation on the De Sitter Kerr metric with small angular momentum of the black hole. For this equation we obtain asymptotic completeness for fixed angular momentum of the field.
We show asymptotic completeness of two-body scattering for a class of translation invariant models describing a single quantum particle (the electron) linearly coupled to a massive scalar field (bosons). Our proof is based on a recently established Mourre estimate for these models. In contrast to previous approaches, it requires no number cutoff, no restriction on the particle-field coupling strength, and no restriction on the magnitude of total momentum. Energy, however, is restricted by the two-boson threshold, admitting only scattering of a dressed electron and a single asymptotic boson. Th…
We formulate a generalized concept of asymptotic completeness and show that it holds in any Haag-Kastler quantum field theory with an upper and lower mass gap. It remains valid in the presence of pairs of oppositely charged particles in the vacuum sector, which invalidate the conventional property of asymptotic completeness. Our result can be restated as a criterion characterizing a class of theories with complete particle interpretation in the conventional sense. This criterion is formulated in terms of certain asymptotic observables (Araki-Haag detectors) whose existence, as strong limits of…
This paper presents the first examples of massless relativistic quantum field theories which are interacting and asymptotically complete. These two-dimensional theories are obtained by an application of a deformation procedure, introduced recently by Grosse and Lechner, to chiral conformal quantum field theories. The resulting models may not be strictly local, but they contain observables localized in spacelike wedges. It is shown that the scattering theory for waves in two dimensions, due to Buchholz, is still valid under these weaker assumptions. The concepts of interaction and asymptotic co…
We formulate a new concept of asymptotic completeness for two-dimensional massless quantum field theories in the spirit of the theory of particle weights. We show that this concept is more general than the standard particle interpretation based on Buchholz' scattering theory of waves. In particular, it holds in any chiral conformal field theory in an irreducible product representation and in any completely rational conformal field theory. This class contains theories of infraparticles to which the scattering theory of waves does not apply.
We give a criterion of asymptotic completeness and provide a representation of the scattering matrix for the scattering couple $(A_{0},A)$, where $A_{0}$ and $A$ are semi-bounded self-adjoint operators in $L^{2}(M,{\mathscr B},m)$ such that the set $\{u\in D(A_{0})\cap D(A):A_{0}u=Au\}$ is dense. No sort of trace-class condition on resolvent differences is required. Applications to the case in which $A_{0}$ corresponds to the free Laplacian in $L^{2}({\mathbb R}^{n})$ and $A$ describes the Laplacian with self-adjoint boundary conditions on rough compact hypersurfaces are given.
We consider the problem of existence of asymptotic observables in local relativistic theories of massive particles. Let $\ti p_1$ and $\ti p_2$ be two energy-momentum vectors of a massive particle and let $\De$ be a small neighbourhood of $\ti p_1+\ti p_2$. We construct asymptotic observables (two-particle Araki-Haag detectors), sensitive to neutral particles of energy-momenta in small neighbourhoods of $\ti p_1$ and $\ti p_2$. We show that these asymptotic observables exist, as strong limits of their approximating sequences, on all physical states from the spectral subspace of $\De$. Moreover…
Let $Ω= \mathbb R^3 \setminus \bar{K}$, where $K$ is an open bounded domain with smooth boundary $Γ$. Let $V(t) = e^{tG_b},\: t \geq 0,$ be the semigroup related to Maxwell's equations in $Ω$ with dissipative boundary condition $ν\wedge (ν\wedge E)+ γ(x) (ν\wedge H) = 0, γ(x) > 0, \forall x \in Γ.$ We study the case when $γ(x) \neq 1, \: \forall x \in Γ,$ and we establish a Weyl formula for the counting function of the eigenvalues of $G_b$ in a polynomial neighbourhood of the negative real axis.
We study the velocity of the propagation of information for a class of local dissipative quantum dynamics. This finite velocity is expressed by the so-called Lieb-Robinson bound. Besides the properties of the already studied dynamics, we consider an additional relation that expresses the propagation of certain subspaces. The previously derived bounds did not reflect the dissipative character of the dynamics and yielded the same result as for the reversible case. In this article, we show that for this class the velocity of propagation of information is time dependent and decays in time towards …
We introduce a new model of the logarithmic type of wave like plate equation with a nonlocal logarithmic damping mechanism. We consider the Cauchy problem for this new model in the whole space, and study the asymptotic profile and optimal decay rates of solutions as time goes to infinity in L^{2}-sense. The operator L considered in this paper was first introduced to dissipate the solutions of the wave equation in the paper studied by Charao-Ikehata in 2020. We will discuss the asymptotic property of the solution as time goes to infinity to our Cauchy problem, and in particular, we classify the…
In this paper we consider Schröodinger operators with potentials of order zero on asymptotically conic manifolds. We prove the existence and the completeness of the wave operators with a naturally defined free Hamiltonian.
This note establishes properties of a model of dissipative fluid dynamics as a symmetric hyperbolic system by which Ruggeri once triggered the development of Rational Extended Thermodynamics. These properties, i.e., (1) convergence of solutions to those of the Navier-Stokes-Fourier equations and (2) nonlinear asymptotic stability of homogeneous reference solutions, also hold in the analogous situation for barotropic fluids.
A parabolic integro differential operator operator L suitable to describe many phenomena in various physical fields,is considered. By means of equivalence between L and the third order equation which describe the evolution inside an exponentially shaped Josephson junction (ESJJ), an asymptotic analysis for (ESJJ) is achieved, evaluating explicitly boundary contributions related to the Dirichlet problem.
We consider a singular perturbation for a family of analytic symplectic maps of the annulus possessing a KAM torus. The perturbation introduces dissipation and contains an adjustable parameter. By choosing the adjustable parameter, one can ensure that the torus persists under perturbation. Such models are common in celestial mechanics. In field theory, the adjustable parameter is called the counterterm and in celestial mechanics, the drift. It is known that there are formal expansions in powers of the perturbation both for the quasi-periodic solution and the counterterm. We prove that the asym…
We study a time-dependent scattering theory for Schrödinger operators on a manifold with asymptotically polynomially growing ends. We use the Mourre theory to show the spectral properties of self-adjoint second-order elliptic operators. We prove the existence and the asymptotic completeness of wave operators using the smooth perturbation theory of Kato. We also consider a two-space scattering with a simple reference system.
We show asymptotic completeness for linear massive Dirac fields on the Schwarzschild-Anti-de Sitter spacetime. The proof is based on a Mourre estimate. We also construct an asymptotic velocity for this field.
We study symmetric systems with dissipative boundary conditions. The solutions of the mixed problems for such systems are given by a contraction semigroup $V(t)f = e^{tG_b}f, t \geq 0$. The solutions $u(t, x) = V(t)f$, where $f$ is an eigenfunction of the generator $G_b$ with eigenvalue $λ,\Re λ< 0,$ are called asymptotically disappearing (ADS). We prove that the wave operators are not complete if there exist (ADS). This is the case for Maxwell system with special boundary conditions in the exterior of the sphere. We obtain a representation of the scattering kernel and we examine the inverse b…
