We report the IR properties of planetary nebulae with WR type and $wels$ central stars known to date and compare them with the IR properties of a sample of PNe with H-rich central stars. We use near-, mid- and far-IR photometric data from archives to derive the IR properties of PNe. We have constructed IR colour-colour diagrams of PNe using measurements from $2MASS$, $IRAS$, $WISE$ and $Akari$ bands. [WR] PNe have a larger near-IR emission from the hot dust component and also show a tendency for stronger 12$μ$m emission as compared to the other two groups. Cool AGB dust properties of all PNe are found to be similar. We derived the dust colour temperatures, dust masses, dust-to-gas mass ratios, IR luminosities and IR excess of PNe for these three groups. [WR] PNe and $wels$-PNe tend to have larger mean values for dust mass when compared to the third group. The average dust-to-gas mass ratio is found to be similar for the three groups of PNe. While there is a strong correlation of dust temperature and IR luminosity with the age for the three groups of PNe, the dust mass, dust-to-gas mass ratios and IR excess are found to be non-varying as the PNe evolve. [WR] PNe and $wels$-PNe show very similar distribution of excitation classes and also show similar distribution with Galactic latitude.
Wolf-Rayet ([WR]) and weak emission-line ($wels$) central stars of planetary nebulae (PNe) have hydrogen-deficient atmospheres, whose origins are not well understood. In the present study, we have conducted plasma diagnostics and abundance analyses of 18 Galactic PNe surrounding [WR] and $wels$ nuclei, using collisionally excited lines (CELs) and optical recombination lines (ORLs) measured with the Wide Field Spectrograph on the ANU 2.3-m telescope at the Siding Spring Observatory complemented with optical archival data. Our plasma diagnostics imply that the electron densities and temperatures…
Close binary interactions perform a key role in the formation and shaping of planetary nebulae. However only a small fraction of Galactic planetary nebulae are known to host close binary systems. Many such systems are detectable through photometric variability. We searched recently published epoch photometry data from Gaia DR3 for planetary nebula central stars with periodic photometric variability indicative of binarity, uncovering four previously unknown close binaries.
Integral field unit (IFU) spectroscopy of planetary nebulae (PNe) provides a plethora of information about their morphologies and ionization structures. An IFU survey of a sample of PNe around hydrogen-deficient stars has been conducted with the Wide Field Spectrograph (WiFeS) on the ANU 2.3-m telescope. In this paper, we present the H$α$ kinematic observations of the PN M2-42 with a weak emission-line star ($wels$), and the compact PNe Hen 3-1333 and Hen 2-113 around Wolf-Rayet ([WR]) stars from this WiFeS survey. We see that the ring and point-symmetric knots previously identified in the vel…

The spectral region between 1250 Angstroms - 3000 Angstroms contains important spectral lines to understand the morphological structures and evolution of planetary nebulae. This is the region sampled by UVIT through various filter bands both in the continuum and in emission lines (e.g. C IV, He I, Mg II etc.). We have mapped several planetary nebulae with different characteristics, ranging in morphology from bipolar to wide and diffuse, and in various states of ionization, comparing the UV with the x-ray morphologies wherever the x-ray images were also available. The major unanticipated discov…
We present observations of planetary nebulae with the LOw Frequency ARray (LOFAR) between 120 and 168 MHz. The images show thermal free-free emission from the nebular shells. We have determined the electron temperatures for spatially resolved, optically thick nebulae. These temperatures are 20 to 60% lower than those estimated from collisionally excited optical emission lines. This strongly supports the existence of a cold plasma component, which co-exists with hot plasma in planetary nebulae. This cold plasma does not contribute to the collisionally excited lines, but does contribute to recom…
Gaseous abundances in planetary nebulae: What have we learned in the past five years?
In this review/tutorial we explore planetary nebulae as a stage in the evolution of low-to-intermediate-mass stars, as major contributors to the mass and chemical enrichment of the interstellar medium, and as astrophysical laboratories. We discuss many observed properties of planetary nebulae, placing particular emphasis on element abundance determinations and comparisons with theoretical predictions. Dust and molecules associated with planetary nebulae are considered as well. We then examine distances, binarity, and planetary nebula morphology and evolution. We end with mention of some of the…
This review provides useful background and information on how we find, vet and compile Planetary Nebulae (PNe) candidates and verify them. It presents a summary of the known Galactic PNe population and their curation in the Hong Kong/AAO/Strasbourg/H-alpha PNe catalogue, HASH. It is a simple introduction for anyone interested in working with PNe, including postgraduate students entering the field and for more general interest too.
A Preferred Orientation Angle for Bipolar Planetary Nebulae
We compute successfully the launching of two magnetic winds from two circumbinary disks formed after a common envelope event. The launching is produced by the increase of magnetic pressure due to the collapse of the disks. The collapse is due to internal torques produced by a weak poloidal magnetic field. The first wind can be described as a wide jet, with an average mass-loss rate of $\sim 1.3 \times 10^{-7}$ \Moy\ and a maximum radial velocity of $\sim 230$ \kms. The outflow has a half-opening angle of $\sim 20^{\circ}$. Narrow jets are also formed intermittently with velocities up to 3,000 …
Eight planetary nebulae have been identified as `born-again', a class of object typified by knotty secondary ejecta having low masses ($\sim$$10^{-4}$ M$_{\odot}$) with nearly no hydrogen. Abell 30, the archetype of the class, also belongs to a small subset of planetary nebulae that exhibit extreme abundance discrepancy factors (where Abell 30 is the most extreme), a phenomenon strongly linked to binary star interactions. We report the presence of light curve brightness variations having a period of 1.060 days that are highly suggestive of a binary central star in Abell 30. If confirmed, this …
