We consider a coupled two-phase Navier-Stokes/Mullins-Sekerka system describing the motion of two immiscible, incompressible fluids inside a bounded container. The moving interface separating the liquids meets the boundary of the container at a constant ninety degree angle. This common interface is unknown and has to be determined as a part of the problem.
We show well-posedness and investigate the long-time behaviour of solutions starting close to certain equilibria. We prove that for equal densities these solutions exist globally in time, are stable, and converge to an equilibrium solution at an exponential rate.
It is shown that any three-dimensional periodic configuration that is strictly stable for the area functional is exponentially stable for the surface diffusion flow and for the Mullins-Sekerka or Hele-Shaw flow. The same result holds for three-dimensional periodic configurations that are strictly stable with respect to the sharp-interface Ohta-Kawaski energy. In this case, they are exponentially stable for the so-called modified Mullins-Sekerka flow.
We study a linearized Mullins-Sekerka/Stokes system in a bounded domain with various boundary conditions. This system plays an important role to prove the convergence of a Stokes/Cahn-Hilliard systemto its sharp interface limit, which is a Stokes/Mullins-Sekerka system, and to prove solvability of the latter system locally in time. We prove solvability of the linearized system in suitable $L^2$-Sobolev spaces with the aid of a maximal regularity result for non-autonomous abstract linear evolution equations.
We analyze the convergence rates to a planar interface in the Mullins-Sekerka model by applying a relaxation method based on relationships among distance, energy, and dissipation. The relaxation method was developed by two of the authors in the context of the 1-d Cahn-Hilliard equation and the current work represents an extension to a higher dimensional problem in which the curvature of the interface plays an important role. The convergence rates obtained are optimal given the assumptions on the initial data.
We first give a complete linearized stability analysis around stationary solutions of the Mullins-Sekerka flow with $90^\circ$ contact angle in two space dimensions. The stationary solutions include flat interfaces, as well as arcs of circles. We investigate the different stability behaviour in dependence of properties of the stationary solution, such as its curvature and length, as well as the curvature of the boundary of the domain at the two contact points. We show that the behaviour changes in terms of these parameters, ranging from exponential stability to instability. We also give a firs…
We propose a novel weak solution theory for the Mullins-Sekerka equation primarily motivated from a gradient flow perspective. Previous existence results on weak solutions due to Luckhaus and Sturzenhecker (Calc. Var. PDE 3, 1995) or Röger (SIAM J. Math. Anal. 37, 2005) left open the inclusion of both a sharp energy dissipation principle and a weak formulation of the contact angle at the intersection of the interface and the domain boundary. To incorporate these, we introduce a functional framework encoding a weak solution concept for Mullins-Sekerka flow essentially relying only on (i) a sing…
We show local well-posedness for the Mullins-Sekerka system with ninety degree angle boundary contact. We will describe the motion of the moving interface by a height function over a fixed reference surface. Using the theory of maximal regularity together with a linearization of the equations and a localization argument we will prove well-posedness of the full nonlinear problem via the contraction mapping principle. Here one difficulty lies in choosing the right space for the Neumann trace of the height function and showing maximal $L_p-L_q$-regularity for the linear problem. In the second par…
We consider a two-phase problem for two incompressible, viscous and immiscible fluids which are separated by a sharp interface. The problem arises as a sharp interface limit of a diffuse interface model. We present results on local existence of strong solutions and on the long-time behavior of solutions which start close to an equilibrium. To be precise, we show that as time tends to infinity, the velocity field converges to zero and the interface converges to a sphere at an exponential rate.
In this survey we present the state of the art about the asymptotic behavior and stability of the modified Mullins--Sekerka flow and the surface diffusion flow of smooth sets, mainly due to E.~Acerbi, N.~Fusco, V.Julin and M.Morini. First we discuss in detail the properties of the nonlocal Area functional under a volume constraint, of which the two flows are the gradient flow with respect to suitable norms, in particular, we define the strict stability property for a critical set of such functional and we show that it is a necessary and sufficient condition for minimality under $W^{2,p}$-pertu…

We prove the convergence of an implicit time discretization for the one-phase Mullins-Sekerka equation, possibly with additional non-local repulsion, proposed in [F. Otto, Arch. Rational Mech. Anal. 141 (1998) 63--103]. Our simple argument shows that the limit satisfies the equation in a distributional sense as well as an optimal energy-dissipation relation. The proof combines arguments from optimal transport, gradient flows & minimizing movements, and basic geometric measure theory.
The Mullins-Sekerka problem is numerically solved in $\mathbb{R}^2$ with the aid of the charge simulation method. This is an expansion of the numerical scheme by which Sakakibara and Yazaki computed the Hele-Shaw flow. We investigate a sufficient condition for the number of collocation points to ensure that the length of the generated approximate polygonal curves gradually decreases. We propose a new benchmark function for the Mullins-Sekerka flow to confirm that the scheme works well. Moreover, by changing the fundamental solutions of the charge simulation method, we are successful to establi…

In this paper, we establish the convergence of the Ohta-Kawasaki equation to motion by nonlocal Mullins-Sekerka law on any smooth domain in space dimensions $N\leq 3$. These equations arise in modeling microphase separation in diblock copolymers. The only assumptions that guarantee our convergence result are $(i)$ well-preparedness of the initial data and $(ii)$ smoothness of the limiting interface. Our method makes use of the "Gamma-convergence" of gradient flows scheme initiated by Sandier and Serfaty and the constancy of multiplicity of the limiting interface due to its smoothness. For the …
A Structure-Preserving Method of Fundamental Solutions for the Multi-Phase Mullins-Sekerka Flow

We introduce a new sharp interface model for the flow of two immiscible, viscous, incompressible fluids. In contrast to classical models for two-phase flows we prescribe an evolution law for the interfaces that takes diffusional effects into account. This leads to a coupled system of Navier-Stokes and Mullins-Sekerka type parts that coincides with the asymptotic limit of a diffuse interface model. We prove the long-time existence of weak solutions, which is an open problem for the classical two-phase model. We show that the phase interfaces have in almost all points a generalized mean curvatur…
In this paper, we aim to study the motions of interfaces and coarsening rates governed by the time-fractional Cahn--Hilliard equation (TFCHE). It is observed by many numerical experiments that the microstructure evolution described by the TFCHE displays quite different dynamical processes comparing with the classical Cahn--Hilliard equation, in particular, regarding motions of interfaces and coarsening rates. By using the method of matched asymptotic expansions, we first derive the sharp interface limit models. Then we can theoretically analyze the motions of interfaces with respect to differe…
We consider the sharp interface limit of a coupled Stokes/Cahn\textendash Hilliard system in a two dimensional, bounded and smooth domain, i.e., we consider the limiting behavior of solutions when a parameter $ε>0$ corresponding to the thickness of the diffuse interface tends to zero. We show that for sufficiently short times the solutions to the Stokes/Cahn\textendash Hilliard system converge to solutions of a sharp interface model, where the evolution of the interface is governed by a Mullins\textendash Sekerka system with an additional convection term coupled to a two\textendash phase stati…
