This paper concerns the study of the Schwarz differential equation $\{h,τ\}=s\,E_4(τ)$ where $E_4$ is the weight 4 Eisenstein series and $s$ is a complex parameter. In particular, we determine all the values of $s$ for which the solutions $h$ are modular functions for a finite index subgroup of $\mbox{SL}_2(\mathbb Z)$. We do so using the theory of equivariant functions on the complex upper-half plane as well as an analysis of the representation theory of $\mbox{SL}_2(\mathbb Z)$. This also leads to the solutions to the Fuchsian differential equation $y''+s\,E_4\,y=0$.
In this paper, we investigate the non-modular solutions to the Schwarz differential equation $\{f,τ\}=sE_4(τ)$ where $E_4(τ)$ is the weight 4 Eisenstein series and $s$ is a complex parameter. In particular, we provide explicit solutions for each $s=2π^2(n/6)^2$ with $n\equiv 1\mod 12$. These solutions are obtained as integrals of meromorphic weight 2 modular forms. As a consequence, we find explicit solutions to the differential equation $\displaystyle y''+\frac{π^2n^2}{36}\,E_4\,y=0$ for each $n\equiv 1\mod 12$ generalizing the work of Hurwitz and Klein on the case $n=1$. Our investigation re…
For every positive integer $r$, we solve the modular Schwarzian differential equation $\{h,τ\}=2π^2r^2E_4$, where $E_4$ is the weight 4 Eisenstein series, by means of equivariant functions on the upper half-plane. This paper supplements previous works \cite{forum, ramanujan}, where the same equation has been solved for infinite families of rational values of $r$. This also leads to the solutions to the modular differential equation $y''+r^2π^2E_4\,y=0$ for every positive integer $r$. These solutions are quasi-modular forms for $\mbox{SL}_2(\mathbb Z)$ if $r$ is even or for the subgroup of inde…
This paper centers around proving variants of the Ax-Lindemann-Weierstrass (ALW) theorem for analytic functions which satisfy Schwarzian differential equations. In previous work, the authors proved the ALW theorem for the uniformizers of genus zero Fuchsian groups, and in this work, we generalize that result in several ways using a variety of techniques from model theory, galois theory and geometry.
Building on the works of S. Bochner on equivalence of modular relation with functional equation associated to the Dirichlet series, K. Chandrasekharan and R. Narasimhan obtained new equivalences between the functional equation and some arithmetical identities. Sister Ann M. Heath considered the functional equation in the Hawkins and Knopp context and showed its equivalence to two arithmetical identities associated with entire modular cusp integrals involving rational period functions for the full modular group. In this paper we use techniques of Chandrasekharan and Narasimhan and extend the re…
Automorphic fundamental solutions and, more generally, solutions of automorphic differential equations, play a key role in the Diaconu-Garrett-Goldfeld prescription for spectral identities involving moments of L-functions as well as other applications, including an explicit formula relating the number of lattice points in a symmetric space to the automorphic spectrum. In this paper we discuss two cases in which the automorphic fundamental solution exhibits branching: pathwise meromorphic continuations may differ by a term involving an Eisenstein series.
We investigate the relations for $L$-functions satisfying certain functional equation, summationa formulas of Voronoi-Ferrar type and Maass forms of integral and half-integral weight. Summation formulas of Voronoi-Ferrar type can be viewed as an automorphic property of distribution vectors of non-unitary principal series representations of the double covering group of $SL(2)$. Our goal is converse theorems for automorphic distributions and Maass forms of level $N$ characterizing them by analytic properties of the associated $L$-functions. As an application of our converse theorems, we construc…
If C is a smooth projective curve over a number field k, then, under fair hypotheses, its L-function admits meromorphic continuation and satisfies the anticipated functional equation if and only if a related function is X-mean-periodic for some appropriate functional space X. Building on the work of Masatoshi Suzuki for modular elliptic curves, we will explore the dual relationship of this result to the widely believed conjecture that such L-functions should be automorphic. More precisely, we will directly show the orthogonality of the matrix coefficients of GL_{2g}-automorphic representations…
We derive a Voronoi-type series approximation for the local weighted mean of an arithmetical function that is associated to Dirichlet series satisfying a functional equation with gamma factors. The series is exploited to study the oscillation frequency with a method of Heath-Brown and Tsang [7]. A by-product is another proof for the well-known result of no element in the Selberg class of degree 0 \textless{} d \textless{} 1. Our major applications include the sign-change problem of the coefficients of automorphic L-functions for GL m , which improves significantly some results of Liu and Wu [1…
Let $π$ be a Hecke--Maass cusp form for $\rm SL_3(\mathbb{Z})$ with normalized Hecke eigenvalues $λ_π(n,r)$. Let $f$ be a holomorphic or Maass cusp form for $\rm SL_2(\mathbb{Z})$ with normalized Hecke eigenvalues $λ_f(n)$. In this paper, we are concerned with obtaining nontrivial estimates for the sum \begin{equation*} \sum_{r,n\geq 1}λ_π(n,r)λ_f(n)e\left(t\,φ(r^2n/N)\right)V\left(r^2n/N\right), \end{equation*} where $e(x)=e^{2πix}$, $V(x)\in \mathcal{C}_c^{\infty}(0,\infty)$, $t\geq 1$ is a large parameter and $φ(x)$ is some real-valued smooth function. As applications, we give an improved s…
A relation between the zeros of different two $L$-functions which have the Euler product and functional equation
As automorphic $L$ -functions or Artin $L$ -functions, several classes of $L$ -functions have Euler products and functional equations . In this paper we study the zeros of $L$ -functions which have the Euler products and functional equations . We show that there exists some relation between the zeros of the Riemann zeta-function and the zeros of such $L$ -functions. As a special case of our results, we find the relations between the zeros of the Riemann zeta-function and the zeros of automorphic $L$ -functions attached to elliptic modular forms or the zeros of Rankin-Selberg $L$ -functions att…
We give a correspondence between automorphic pairs of distributions on $\mathbb{R}$ and Dirichlet series satisfying functional equations and some additional analytic conditions. Moreover, we show that the notion of automorphic pairs of distributions on $\mathbb{R}$ can be regarded as a generalization of automorphic distributions on smooth principal series representations of the universal covering group of $SL(2,\mathbb{R})$. As an application, we prove Weil type converse theorems for automorphic distributions and Maass forms of real weights.
We study linear ordinary differential equations which are analytically parametrized on Hermitian symmetric spaces and invariant under the action of symplectic groups. They are generalizations of the classical Lamé equation. Our main result gives a closed relation between such differential equations and automorphic forms for symplectic groups. Our study is based on techniques concerning with the monodromy of complex differential equations, the Baker-Akhiezer functions and algebraic curves attached to rings of differential operators.
We find defining equations for the Shimura curve of discriminant 15 over Z[1/15]. We then determine the graded ring of automorphic forms over the 2-adic integers, as well as the higher cohomology. We apply this to calculate the homotopy groups of a spectrum of "topological automorphic forms" associated to this curve, as well as one associated to a quotient by an Atkin-Lehner involution.
We study the relations governing the ring of quasiautomorphic forms associated to triangle groups with a single cusp, thereby extending our earlier results on Hecke groups. The Eisenstein series associated to these triangle groups are shown to satisfy Ramanujan-like identities. These identities in turn allow us to associate a nonlinear differential equation to each triangle group. We show that they are solved by the quasiautomorphic weight-2 Eisenstein series associated to the triangle group and its orbit under the group action. We conclude by discussing the Painlevé property of these nonlinea…
Physicists such as Green, Vanhove, et al show that differential equations involving automorphic forms govern the behavior of gravitons. One particular point of interest is solutions to $(Δ-λ)u=E_α E_β$ on an arithmetic quotient of the exceptional group $E_8$. We establish that the existence of a solution to $(Δ-λ)u=E_αE_β$ on the simpler space $SL_2(\mathbb{Z})\backslash SL_2(\mathbb{R})$ for certain values of $α$ and $β$ depends on nontrivial zeros of the Riemann zeta function $ζ(s)$. Further, when such a solution exists, we use spectral theory to solve $(Δ-λ)u=E_αE_β$ on $SL_2(\mathbb{Z})\ba…
There are many Rankin-Selberg integrals representing Langlands $L$-functions, and it is not apparent what the limits of the Rankin-Selberg method are. The Dimension Equation is an equality satisfied by many such integrals that suggests a priority for further investigations. However there are also Rankin-Selberg integrals that do not satisfy this equation. Here we propose an extension and reformulation of the dimension equation that includes many additional cases. We explain some of these cases, including the new doubling integrals of the authors, Cai and Kaplan. We then show how this same equa…
We prove that for a compact locally symmetric Riemannian space $M$ of rank 1 there exist infinitely many automorphic Tate motives $f$ such that the generalized Selberg zeta function $Z_{M(f)}(s)$ satisfies a simple functional equation in the sense that it has no gamma factors.
Hardy and Littlewood's approximate functional equation for quadratic Weyl sums (theta sums) provides, by iterative application, a powerful tool for the asymptotic analysis of such sums. The classical Jacobi theta function, on the other hand, satisfies an exact functional equation, and extends to an automorphic function on the Jacobi group. In the present study we construct a related, almost everywhere non-differentiable automorphic function, which approximates quadratic Weyl sums up to an error of order one, uniformly in the summation range. This not only implies the approximate functional equ…
The purpose of the present paper is to study the number theoretic properties of the special values of the spectral zeta functions of the non-commutative harmonic oscillator (NcHO), especially in relation to modular forms and elliptic curves from the viewpoint of Fuchsian differential equations, and deepen the understanding of the spectrum of the NcHO. We study first the general expression of special values of the spectral zeta function $ζ_Q(s)$ of the NcHO at $s=n$ $(n=2,3,\dots)$ and then the generating and meta-generating functions for Apéry-like numbers defined through the analysis of speci…
We study various relations governing quasi-automorphic forms associated to discrete subgroups of ${\rm SL}(2,\mathbb{R}) $ called Hecke groups. We show that the Eisenstein series associated to a Hecke group ${\rm H}(m)$ satisfy a set of $m$ coupled linear differential equations, which are natural analogues of the well-known Ramanujan identities for quasi-modular forms of ${\rm SL}(2,\mathbb{Z})$. Each Hecke group is then associated to a (hyper-)elliptic curve, whose coefficients are determined by an anomaly equation. For the $m=3$ and $4$ cases, the Ramanujan identities admit a natural geometr…
