In this work, we revisit the study by M. E. Schonbek [11] concerning the problem of existence of global entropic weak solutions for the classical Boussinesq system, as well as the study of the regularity of these solutions by C. J. Amick [1]. We propose to regularize by a "fractal" operator (i.e. a differential operator defined by a Fourier multiplier of type $ε|ξ|^λ, \, (ε,λ) \in\,\mathbb{R}_+\times ] 0,2]$). We first show that the regularized system is globally unconditionally well-posed in Sobolev spaces of type $H^s(\mathbb{R}),\,s > \frac {1}{2},$, uniformly in the regularizing parameters $(ε,λ) \in\,\mathbb{R}_+\times ]0,2]$. As a consequence we obtain the global well-posedness of the classical Boussinesq system at this level of regularity as well as the convergence in the strong topology of the solution of the regularized system towards the solution of the classical Boussinesq equation as the parameter e goes to 0. In a second time, we prove the existence of low regularity entropic solutions of the Boussinesq equations emanating from $u_0 \in H^1$ and $ζ_0$ in an Orlicz class as weak limits of regular solutions.
In this paper, our goal is to improve the local well-posedness theory for certain generalized Boussinesq equations by revisiting bilinear estimates related to the Schrödinger equation. Moreover, we propose a novel, automated procedure to handle the summation argument for these bounds.
The 2D conservative Boussinesq system describes inviscid, incompressible, buoyant fluid flow in gravity field. The possibility of finite time blow up for solutions of this system is a classical problem of mathematical hydrodynamics. We consider a 1D model of 2D Boussinesq system motivated by a particular finite time blow up scenario. We prove that finite time blow up is possible for the solutions to the model system.
Consideration is given to three different full dispersion Boussinesq systems arising as asymptotic models in the bi-directional propagation of weakly nonlinear surface waves in shallow water. We prove that, under a non-cavitation condition on the initial data, these three systems are well-posed on a time scale of order $\mathcal{O}(\frac1\varepsilon)$, where $\varepsilon$ is a small parameter measuring the weak non-linearity of the waves. This result seems new for one of these systems, even for short time. The two other systems involve surface tension, and for one of them, the non-cavitation c…
We apply the Lie-group formalism and the nonclassical method due to Bluman and Cole to deduce symmetries of the generalized Boussinesq equation, which has the classical Boussinesq equation as an special case. We study the class of functions $f(u)$ for which this equation admit either the classical or the nonclassical method. The reductions obtained are derived. Some new exact solutions can be derived.
The linearization of the classical Boussinesq system is solved explicitly in the case of nonzero boundary conditions on the half-line. The analysis relies on the unified transform method of Fokas and is performed in two different frameworks: (i) by exploiting the recently introduced extension of Fokas's method to systems of equations; (ii) by expressing the linearized classical Boussinesq system as a single, higher-order equation which is then solved via the usual version of the unified transform. The resulting formula provides a novel representation for the solution of the linearized classica…
The contribution of this paper will be focused on the global existence and uniqueness topic in three-dimensional case of the axisymmetric viscous Boussinesq system in critical Lebesgue spaces. We aim at deriving analogous results for the classical two-dimensional and three-dimensional axisymmetric Navier-Stokes equations recently obtained in \cite{Gallay,Gallay-Sverak}. Roughly speaking, we show essentially that if the initial data $(v_0,ρ_0)$ is axisymmetric and $(ω_0,ρ_0)$ belongs to the critical space $L^1(Ω)\times L^1(\mathbb{R}^3)$, with $ω_0$ is the initial vorticity associated to $v_0$ …
This paper establishes the global in time existence of classical solutions to the 2D anisotropic Boussinesq equations with vertical dissipation. When only the vertical dissipation is present, there is no direct control on the horizontal derivatives and the global regularity problem is very challenging. To solve this problem, we bound the derivatives in terms of the $L^\infty$-norm of the vertical velocity $v$ and prove that $\|v\|_{L^{r}}$ with $2\le r<\infty$ at any time does not grow faster than $\sqrt{r \log r}$ as $r$ increases. A delicate interpolation inequality connecting $\|v\|_{L^\inf…
This paper examines the global regularity problem on the two-dimensional incompressible Boussinesq equations with fractional dissipation, given by $Λ^αu$ in the velocity equation and by $Λ^βθ$ in the temperature equation, where $Λ=\sqrt{-Δ}$ denotes the Zygmund operator. We establish the global existence and smoothness of classical solutions when $(α,β)$ is in the critical range: $α>\frac{\sqrt{1777}-23}{24} =0.798103..$, $β>0$ and $α+ β=1$. This result improves the previous work of Jiu, Miao, Wu and Zhang \cite{JMWZ} which obtained the global regularity for $α> \frac{23-\sqrt{145}}{12} \appro…
Through Borel summation methods, we analyze the Boussinesq equations for coupled fluid velocity and temperature fields. We prove that an equivalent system of integral equations in the Borel variable p dual to 1/t has a unique solution in a class of exponentially bounded functions, implying the existence of a classical solution to the Boussinesq equations in a complex t-region that includes a real positive time axis segment. For analytic initial data and forcing, it is shown that the solution is Borel summable, implying that that formal series in powers of t is Gevrey-1 asymptotic, and within t…
We study the global existence issue for the two-dimensional Boussinesq system with horizontal viscosity in only one equation. We first examine the case where the Navier-Stokes equation with no vertical viscosity is coupled with a transport equation. Second, we consider a coupling between the classical two-dimensional incompressible Euler equation and a transportdiffusion equation with diffusion in the horizontal direction only. For the both systems and for arbitrarily large data, we construct global weak solutions `a la Leray. Next, we state global wellposedness results for more regular data. …
We investigate the existence of exact solutions in closed form to a fractional version of the nonlinear Boussinesq equation for groundwater flow through an unconfined aquifer. We show this fractional equation appears naturally when the classical nonlinear Darcy's law is replaced by a space-fractional one. After a physical discussion on the fractional model, we give several exact solutions in closed form for special choices of initial and boundary data. We provide solutions for steady and unsteady cases, by considering both classical and fractional derivatives in time.
The Boussinesq $abcd$ system arises in the modeling of long wave small amplitude water waves in a channel, where the four parameters $(a,b,c,d)$ satisfy one constraint. In this paper we focus on the solitary wave solutions to such a system. In particular we work in two parameter regimes where the system does not admit a Hamiltonian structure (corresponding to $b \ne d$). We prove via analytic global bifurcation techniques the existence of solitary waves in such parameter regimes. Some qualitative properties of the solutions are also derived, from which sharp results can be obtained for the glo…
Through Borel summation methods, we analyze two different variations of the Navier-Stokes equation --the Boussinesq equation and the magnetic Benard equation. This method has previously been applied to the Navier-Stokes equation. We prove that an equivalent system of integral equations in each case has a unique solution, which is exponentially bounded for p in R^{+}, p being the Laplace dual variable of 1/t. This implies the local existence of a classical solution in a complex t-region that includes a real positive time (t)-axis segment. In this formalism, global existence of PDE solutions bec…
We consider the evolution of two incompressible fluids with homogeneous densities $ρ_-<ρ_+$ subject to gravity described by the inviscid Boussinesq equations and provide the explicit relaxation of the associated differential inclusion. The existence of a subsolution to the relaxation allows one to conclude the existence of turbulently mixing solutions to the original Boussinesq system. As a specific application we investigate subsolutions emanating from the classical Rayleigh-Taylor initial configuration where the two fluids are separated by a horizontal interface with the heavier fluid being …
R. Glassey and W. Strauss have proved in [Arch. Rational Mech. Anal. 92 (1986), 59--90] that classical solutions to the relativistic Vlasov-Maxwell system in three space dimensions do not develop singularities as long as the support of the distribution function in the momentum variable remains bounded. The present paper simplifies their proof.
A hyperbolic problem wich combines a classical(Dirichlet) and a non-local contraint is considered. The existence and uniqueness of strong solutions are proved,we use a functionnal analysis method based on a priori estimate and on the density of the range of the operator generated by the considered problem.
We consider the Boussinesq PDE perturbed by a time-dependent forcing. Even though there is no smoothing effect for arbitrary smooth initial data, we are able to apply the method of self-consistent bounds to deduce the existence of smooth classical periodic solutions in the vicinity of 0. The proof is non-perturbative and relies on construction of periodic isolating segments in the Galerkin projections.
The 2d Boussinesq equations model large scale atmospheric and oceanic flows. Whether its solutions develop a singularity in finite-time remains a classical open problem in mathematical fluid dynamics. In this work, blowup from smooth nontrivial initial velocities in stagnation-point form solutions of this system is established. On an infinite strip $Ω=\{(x,y)\in[0,1]\times\mathbb{R}^+\}$, we consider velocities of the form $u=(f(t,x),-yf_x(t,x))$, with scalar temperature\, $θ=yρ(t,x)$. Assuming $f_x(0,x)$ attains its global maximum only at points $x_i^*$ located on the boundary of $[0,1]$, gen…
We investigate the long-time properties of the two-dimensional inviscid Boussinesq equations near a stably stratified Couette flow, for an initial Gevrey perturbation of size $\varepsilon$. Under the classical Miles-Howard stability condition on the Richardson number, we prove that the system experiences a shear-buoyancy instability: the density variation and velocity undergo an $O(t^{-1/2})$ inviscid damping while the vorticity and density gradient grow as $O(t^{1/2})$. The result holds at least until the natural, nonlinear timescale $t \approx \varepsilon^{-2}$. Notice that the density behav…
The classical theory of water waves is based on the theory of inviscid flows. However it is important to include viscous effects in some applications. Two models are proposed to add dissipative effects in the context of the Boussinesq equations, which include the effects of weak dispersion and nonlinearity in a shallow water framework. The dissipative Boussinesq equations are then integrated numerically.
In this paper we deal with semilinear problems at resonance. We present a sufficient condition for the existence of a weak solution in terms of the asymptotic properties of nonlinearity. Our condition generalizes the classical Landesman-Lazer condition but it also covers the cases of vanishing and oscillating nonlinearities.
In this paper we revisit our previous study of the local theory of prescribed Jacobian equations associated with generating functions, which are extensions of cost functions in the theory of optimal transportation. In particular, as foreshadowed in the earlier work, we provide details pertaining to the relaxation of a monotonicity condition A4w in the underlying convexity theory and the consequent classical regularity. Taking advantage of recent work of Kitagawa and Guillen, we also extend our classical regularity theory to the weak form A3w of the critical matrix convexity conditions.
We introduce tow assumptions weaker than the classical Ambrosetti-Rabinowitz and the subcritical polynomial growth conditions to obtain the Palais-Smale Condition. Therefore, we improve the Ambrosetti- Rabinowitz existence theorems. Also, we prove some existence results under a weaken subcritical polynomial growth conditions where the nonlinearity does not satisfy the super-quadratic condition and even it does not have any limits at infinity.
This paper is devoted to studies of non-negative, non-trivial (classical, punctured, or distributional) solutions to the higher order Hardy-Hénon equations \[ (-Δ)^m u = |x|^σu^p \] in $\mathbf R^n$ with $p > 1$. We show that the condition \[ n - 2m - \frac{2m+σ}{p-1} >0 \] is necessary for the existence of distributional solutions. For $n \geq 2m$ and $σ> -2m$, we prove that any distributional solution satisfies an integral equation and a weak super polyharmonic property. We establish some sufficient conditions for punctured or classical solution to be a distributional solution. As applicatio…
In this survey article we revisit Hilbert's $19^{\text{th}}$ problem concerning the regularity of minimizers of variational integrals. We first discuss the classical theory (that is, the statement and resolution of Hilbert's problem in all dimensions). We then discuss recent results concerning the regularity of minimizers of degenerate convex functionals. Finally, we discuss some open problems. Exercises are included for the benefit of researchers who are entering the subject.
