Lov{á}sz showed that a matching covered graph $G$ has an ear decomposition starting with an arbitrary edge of $G$. Let $G$ be a graph which has a perfect matching. We call $G$ cycle-nice if for each even cycle $C$ of $G$, $G-V(C)$ has a perfect matching. If $G$ is a cycle-nice matching covered graph, then $G$ has ear decompositions starting with an arbitrary even cycle of $G$. In this paper, we characterize cycle-nice claw-free plane graphs. We show that the only cycle-nice simple 3-connected claw-free plane graphs are $K_4$, $W_5$ and $\overline C_6$. Furthermore, every cycle-nice 2-connected claw-free plane graph can be obtained from a graph in the family ${\cal F}$ by a sequence of three types of operations, where ${\cal F}$ consists of even cycles, a diamond, $K_4$, and $\overline C_6$.
It has been conjectured that for every claw-free graph $G$ the choice number of $G$ is equal to its chromatic number. We focus on the special case of this conjecture where $G$ is perfect. Claw-free perfect graphs can be decomposed via clique-cutset into two special classes called elementary graphs and peculiar graphs. Based on this decomposition we prove that the conjecture holds true for every claw-free perfect graph with maximum clique size at most $4$.
A graph is strongly perfect if every induced subgraph H has a stable set that meets every maximal clique of H. A graph is claw-free if no vertex has three pairwise non-adjacent neighbors. The characterization of claw-free graphs that are strongly perfect by a set of forbidden induced subgraphs was conjectured by Ravindra in 1990 and was proved by Wang in 2006. Here we give a shorter proof of this characterization.
Lovasz and Plummer conjectured that there exists a fixed positive constant c such that every cubic n-vertex graph with no cutedge has at least 2^(cn) perfect matchings. Their conjecture has been verified for bipartite graphs by Voorhoeve and planar graphs by Chudnovsky and Seymour. We prove that every claw-free cubic n-vertex graph with no cutedge has more than 2^(n/12) perfect matchings, thus verifying the conjecture for claw-free graphs.
If $G$ is a claw-free hamiltonian graph of order $n$ and maximum degree $Δ$ with $Δ\geq 24$, then $G$ has cycles of at least $\min\left\{ n,\left\lceil\frac{3}{2}Δ\right\rceil\right\}-2$ many different lengths.
A cycle $C$ of length $k$ in graph $G$ is extendable if there is another cycle $C'$ in $G$ with $V(C) \subset V(C')$ and length $k+1$. A graph is cycle extendable if every non-Hamiltonian cycle is extendable. In 1990 Hendry conjectured that any Hamiltonian chordal graph (a Hamiltonian graph with no induced cycle of length greater than three) is cycle extendable, and this conjecture has been verified for Hamiltonian chordal graphs which are interval graphs, planar graphs, and split graphs. We prove that any 2-connected claw-free chordal graph is cycle extendable.
A graph is called t-perfect if its stable set polytope is defined by non-negativity, edge and odd-cycle inequalities. We show that it can be decided in polynomial time whether a given claw-free graph is t-perfect.
For every graph $X$, we consider the class of all connected $\{K_{1,3}, X\}$-free graphs which are distinct from an odd cycle and have independence number at least $4$, and we show that all graphs in the class are perfect if and only if $X$ is an induced subgraph of some of $P_6$, $K_1 \cup P_5$, $2P_3$, $Z_2$ or $K_1 \cup Z_1$. Furthermore, for $X$ chosen as $2K_1 \cup K_3$, we list all eight imperfect graphs belonging to the class; and for every other choice of $X$, we show that there are infinitely many such graphs. In addition, for $X$ chosen as $B_{1,2}$, we describe the structure of all …
An st-path is a path with the end-vertices s and t. An s-path is a path with an end-vertex s. The results of this paper include necessary and sufficient conditions for a {claw, net}-free graph G with given two different vertices s, t and an edge e to have (1)a Hamiltonian s-path, (2) a Hamiltonian st-path, (3) a Hamiltonian s- and st-paths containing edge e when G has connectivity one, and (4) a Hamiltonian cycle containing e when G is 2-connected. These results imply that a connected {claw, net}-free graph has a Hamiltonian path and a 2-connected {claw, net}-free graph has a Hamiltonian cycle…
Let $G$ be a graph on $n\geq 3$ vertices. A graph $G$ is almost distance-hereditary if each connected induced subgraph $H$ of $G$ has the property $d_{H}(x,y)\leq d_{G}(x,y)+1$ for any pair of vertices $x,y\in V(H)$. A graph $G$ is called 1-heavy (2-heavy) if at least one (two) of the end vertices of each induced subgraph of $G$ isomorphic to $K_{1,3}$ (a claw) has (have) degree at least $n/2$, and called claw-heavy if each claw of $G$ has a pair of end vertices with degree sum at least $n$. Thus every 2-heavy graph is claw-heavy. In this paper we prove the following two results: (1) Every 2-c…
Let $G$ be a graph, and $v\in V(G)$ and $S\subseteq V(G)\backslash v$ of size at least $k$. An important result on graph connectivity due to Perfect states that, if $v$ and $S$ are $k$-linked, then a $(k-1)$-link between a vertex $v$ and $S$ can be extended to a $k$-link between $v$ and $S$ such that the endvertices of the $(k-1)$-link are also the endvertices of the $k$-link. We begin by proving a generalization of Perfect's result by showing that, if two disjoint sets $S_1$ and $S_2$ are $k$-linked, then a $t$-link ($t< k$) between two disjoint sets $S_1$ and $S_2$ can be extended to a $k$-l…
The Erdős-Gyárfás conjecture states that every graph with minimum degree at least three has a cycle whose length is a power of 2. Since this conjecture has proven to be far from reach, Hobbs asked if the Erdős-Gyárfás conjecture holds in claw-free graphs. In this paper, we obtain some results on this question, in particular for cubic claw-free graphs.
The subject of this work is the study of $\LS_+$-perfect graphs defined as those graphs $G$ for which the stable set polytope $\stab(G)$ is achieved in one iteration of Lovász-Schrijver PSD-operator $\LS_+$, applied to its edge relaxation $\estab(G)$. In particular, we look for a polyhedral relaxation of $\stab(G)$ that coincides with $\LS_+(\estab(G))$ and $\stab(G)$ if and only if $G$ is $\LS_+$-perfect. An according conjecture has been recently formulated ($\LS_+$-Perfect Graph Conjecture); here we verify it for the well-studied class of claw-free graphs.
A graph $X$ is said to be chordal bipartite if it is bipartite and contains no induced cycle of length at least $6$. It is proved that if $X$ does not contain bipartite claw as an induced subgraph, then the Weisfeiler-Leman dimension of $X$ is at most $3$. The proof is based on the theory of coherent configurations.
In this research, we determine the structure of (claw, bull)-free graphs. We show that every connected (claw, bull)-free graph is either an expansion of a path, an expansion of a cycle, or the complement of a triangle-free graph; where an expansion of a graph $G$ is obtained by replacing its vertices with disjoint cliques and adding all edges between cliques corresponding to adjacent vertices of $G$. This result also reveals facts about the structure of triangle-free graphs, which might be of independent interest.
Let $G$ be a graph on $n\geq 3$ vertices, claw the bipartite graph $K_{1,3}$, and $Z_i$ the graph obtained from a triangle by attaching a path of length $i$ to its one vertex. $G$ is called 1-heavy if at least one end vertex of each induced claw of $G$ has degree at least $n/2$, and claw-\emph{o}-heavy if each induced claw of it has a pair of end vertices with degree sum at least $n$. In this paper we prove two results: (1) Every 2-connected claw-$o$-heavy graph $G$ is Hamiltonian if every pair of vertices $u,v$ in a subgraph $H\cong Z_1$ contained in an induced subgraph $Z_2$ of $G$ with $d_{…
We show that deciding whether a given graph $G$ of size $m$ has a unique perfect matching as well as finding that matching, if it exists, can be done in time $O(m)$ if $G$ is either a cograph, or a split graph, or an interval graph, or claw-free. Furthermore, we provide a constructive characterization of the claw-free graphs with a unique perfect matching.
We prove that the genus polynomials of the graphs called iterated claws are real-rooted. This continues our work directed toward the 25-year-old conjecture that the genus distribution of every graph is log-concave. We have previously established log-concavity for sequences of graphs constructed by iterative vertex-amalgamation or iterative edge-amalgamation of graphs that satisfy a commonly observable condition on their partitioned genus distributions, even though it had been proved previously that iterative amalgamation does not always preserve real-rootedness of the genus polynomial of the i…
We describe $Forb\{K_{1,3}, \overline {K_{1,3}}\}$, the class of graphs $G$ such that $G$ and its complement $ \overline{G}$ are claw-free. With few exceptions, it is made of graphs whose connected components consist of cycles of length at least 4, paths or isolated vertices, and of the complements of these graphs. Considering the hypergraph ${\mathcal H} ^{(3)}(G)$ made of the 3-element subsets of the vertex set of a graph $G$ on which $G$ induces a clique or an independent subset, we deduce from above a description of the Boolean sum $G\dot{+}G'$ of two graphs $G$ and $G'$ giving the same hy…

With few exceptions, it is made of graphs whose connected components consist of cycles of length at least 4, paths, and of the complements of these graphs. Considering the hypergraph ${\mathcal H}^{(3)}(G)$ made of the 3-element subsets of the vertex set of a graph $G$ on which $G$ induces a clique or an independent subset, we deduce from above a description of the Boolean sum $G\dot{+}G'$ of two graphs $G$ and $G'$ giving the same hypergraph. We indicate the r…
A conjecture of Carsten Thomassen states that every 4-connected line graph is hamiltonian. It is known that the conjecture is true for 7-connected line graphs. We improve this by showing that any 5-connected line graph of minimum degree at least 6 is hamiltonian. The result extends to claw-free graphs and to Hamilton-connectedness.
In this paper, we study the game of cops and robber on the class of graphs with no even hole (induced cycle of even length) and claw (a star with three leaves). The cop number of a graph $G$ is defined as the minimum number of cops needed to capture the robber. Here, we prove that the cop number of all claw-free even-hole-free graphs is at most two and, in addition, the capture time is at most $2n$ rounds, where $n$ is the number of vertices of the graph. Moreover, our results can be viewed as a first step towards studying the structure of claw-free even-hole-free graphs.
Perfect Matching-Cut is the problem of deciding whether a graph has a perfect matching that contains an edge-cut. We show that this problem is NP-complete for planar graphs with maximum degree four, for planar graphs with girth five, for bipartite five-regular graphs, for graphs of diameter three and for bipartite graphs of diameter four. We show that there exist polynomial time algorithms for the following classes of graphs: claw-free, $P_5$-free, diameter two, bipartite with diameter three and graphs with bounded tree-width.
For a fixed integer, the $k$-Colouring problem is to decide if the vertices of a graph can be coloured with at most $k$ colours for an integer $k$, such that no two adjacent vertices are coloured alike. A graph $G$ is $H$-free if $G$ does not contain $H$ as an induced subgraph. It is known that for all $k\geq 3$, the $k$-Colouring problem is NP-complete for $H$-free graphs if $H$ contains an induced claw or cycle. The case where $H$ contains a cycle follows from the known result that the problem is NP-complete even for graphs of arbitrarily large fixed girth. We examine to what extent the situ…
Richard P. Stanley defined the chromatic symmetric function of a simple graph and has conjectured that every tree is determined by its chromatic symmetric function. Recently, Takahiro Hasebe and the author proved that the order quasisymmetric functions, which are analogs of the chromatic symmetric functions, distinguish rooted trees. In this paper, using a similar method, we prove that the chromatic symmetric functions distinguish trivially perfect graphs. Moreover, we also prove that claw-free cographs, that is, $ \{K_{1,3},P_{4}\} $-free graphs belong to a known class of $ e $-positive graph…
In a series of papers, of which this is the first, we study sufficient conditions for Hamiltonicity in terms of forbidden induced subgraphs and extend such results to locally finite infinite graphs. For this we use topological circles within the Freudenthal compactification of a locally finite graph as infinite cycles. In this paper we focus on conditions involving claws, nets and bulls as induced subgraphs. We extend Hamiltonicity results for finite claw-free and net-free graphs by Shepherd to locally finite graphs. Moreover, we generalise a classification of finite claw-free and net-free gra…
A lemma of Fouquet implies that a claw-free graph contains an induced $C_5$, contains no odd hole, or is quasi-line. In this paper we use this result to give an improved shortest-odd-hole algorithm for claw-free graphs by exploiting the structural relationship between line graphs and quasi-line graphs suggested by Chudnovsky and Seymour's structure theorem for quasi-line graphs. Our approach involves reducing the problem to that of finding a shortest odd cycle of length $\geq 5$ in a graph. Our algorithm runs in $O(m^2+n^2\log n)$ time, improving upon Shrem, Stern, and Golumbic's recent $O(nm^…
The maximum cardinality of an induced $2$-regular subgraph of a graph $G$ is denoted by $c_{\rm ind}(G)$. We prove that if $G$ is an $r$-regular graph of order $n$, then $c_{\rm ind}(G) \geq \frac{n}{2(r-1)} + \frac{1}{(r-1)(r-2)}$ and we prove that if $G$ is a cubic claw-free graph on order $n$, then $c_{\rm ind}(G) > 13n/20$ and this bound is asymptotically best possible.
A graph is h-perfect if its stable set polytope can be completely described by non-negativity, clique and odd-hole constraints. It is t-perfect if it furthermore has no clique of size 4. For every graph $G$ and every $c\in\mathbb{Z}_{+}^{V(G)}$, the weighted chromatic number of $(G,c)$ is the minimum cardinality of a multi-set $\mathcal{F}$ of stable sets of $G$ such that every $v\in V(G)$ belongs to at least $c_v$ members of $\mathcal{F}$. We prove that every h-perfect line-graph and every t-perfect claw-free graph $G$ has the integer round-up property for the chromatic number: for every non-…
Let claw be the graph $K_{1,3}$. A graph $G$ on $n\geq 3$ vertices is called \emph{o}-heavy if each induced claw of $G$ has a pair of end-vertices with degree sum at least $n$, and 1-heavy if at least one end-vertex of each induced claw of $G$ has degree at least $n/2$. In this note, we show that every 2-connected $o$-heavy or 3-connected 1-heavy graph is Hamiltonian if we restrict Fan-type degree condition or neighborhood intersection condition to certain pairs of vertices in some small induced subgraphs of the graph. Our results improve or extend previous results of Broersma et al., Chen et …
In an attempt to understanding the complexity of the independent set problem, Chv{á}tal defined t-perfect graphs. While a full characterization of this class is still at large, progress has been achieved for claw-free graphs [Bruhn and Stein, Math.\ Program.\ 2012] and $P_{5}$-free graphs [Bruhn and Fuchs, SIAM J.\ Discrete Math.\ 2017]. We take one more step to characterize fork-free t-perfect graphs, and show that they are strongly t-perfect and three-colorable. We also present polynomial-time algorithms for recognizing and coloring these graphs.
For an $m$-cycle $C$, an inside $m$-cycle of $C$ is a cycle on the same vertex set, that is edge-disjoint from $C$. In an $m$-cycle system, $(\mathcal{X}, \mathcal{C})$, if inside $m$-cycles can be chosen -one for each cycle- to form another $m$-cycle system, then $(\mathcal{X}, \mathcal{C})$ is called an almost $2$-perfect $m$-cycle system. Almost $2$-perfect cycle systems can be considered as generalisations of $2$-perfect cycle systems. Cycle packings are generalisations of cycle systems that allow to have leaves after decomposition. In this paper, we prove that an almost $2$-perfect maximu…
A graph $G$ on $n$ vertices is Hamiltonian if it contains a spanning cycle, and pancyclic if it contains cycles of all lengths from 3 to $n$. In 1984, Fan presented a degree condition involving every pair of vertices at distance two for a 2-connected graph to be Hamiltonian. Motivated by Fan's result, we say that an induced subgraph $H$ of $G$ is $f_1$-heavy if for every pair of vertices $u,v\in V(H)$, $d_{H}(u,v)=2$ implies $\max\{d(u),d(v)\}\geq (n+1)/2$. For a given graph $R$, $G$ is called $R$-$f_1$-heavy if every induced subgraph of $G$ isomorphic to $R$ is $f_1$-heavy. In this paper we s…
We call a graph $G$ pancyclic if it contains at least one cycle of every possible length $m$, for $3\le m\le |V(G)|$. In this paper, we define a new property called chorded pancyclicity. We explore forbidden subgraphs in claw-free graphs sufficient to imply that the graph contains at least one chorded cycle of every possible length $4, 5, \ldots, |V(G)|$. In particular, certain paths and triangles with pendant paths are forbidden.
A subset $S\subseteq V$ in a graph $G=(V,E)$ is a $k$-quasiperfect dominating set (for $k\geq 1$) if every vertex not in $S$ is adjacent to at least one and at most $k$ vertices in $S$. The cardinality of a minimum $k$-quasiperfect dominating set in $G$ is denoted by $γ_ {\stackrel{}{1k}}(G)$. Those sets were first introduced by Chellali et al. (2013) as a generalization of the perfect domination concept and allow us to construct a decreasing chain of quasiperfect dominating numbers $ n \ge γ_ {\stackrel{}{11}}(G) \ge γ_ {\stackrel{}{12}}(G)\ge \ldots \ge γ_ {\stackrel{}{1Δ}}(G)=γ(G)$ in order…
A disconnected cut of a connected graph is a vertex cut that itself also induces a disconnected subgraph. The decision problem whether a graph has a disconnected cut is called Disconnected Cut. This problem is closely related to several homomorphism and contraction problems, and fits in an extensive line of research on vertex cuts with additional properties. It is known that Disconnected Cut is NP-hard on general graphs, while polynomial-time algorithms are known for several graph classes. However, the complexity of the problem on claw-free graphs remained an open question. Its connection to t…
In this paper we provide a unified combinatorial approach to establish a connection between Stirling permutations, cycle structures of permutations and perfect matchings. The main tool of our investigations is MY-sequences. In particular, we discover that the Eulerian polynomials have a simple combinatorial interpretation in terms of some statistics on MY-sequences.
A clique-coloring of a graph $G$ is a coloring of the vertices of $G$ so that no maximal clique of size at least two is monochromatic. The clique-hypergraph, $\mathcal{H}(G)$, of a graph $G$ has $V(G)$ as its set of vertices and the maximal cliques of $G$ as its hyperedges. A (vertex) coloring of $\mathcal{H}(G)$ is a clique-coloring of $G$. The clique-chromatic number of $G$ is the least number of colors for which $G$ admits a clique-coloring. Every planar graph has been proved to be 3-clique-colorable (Electr. J. Combin. 6 (1999), \#R26). Recently, we showed that every claw-free planar graph…
We study the structure of a minimum dominating set of $C_{2n+1}^n$, the Cartesian product of $n$ copies of the cycle of size $2n+1$, where $2n+1$ is a prime.
An L-factor of a graph G is a spanning subgraph of G whose every component is a 3-vertex path. Let v(G) be the number of vertices of G and d(G) the domination number of G. A claw is a graph with four vertices and three edges incident to the same vertex. A graph is claw-free if it has no induced subgraph isomorphic to a claw. Our results include the following. Let G be a 3-connected claw-free graph, x a vertex in G, e = xy an edge in G, and P a 3-vertex path in G. Then (a1) if v(G) = 0 mod 3, then G has an L-factor containing (avoiding) e, (a2) if v(G) = 1 mod 3, then G - x has an L-factor, (a3…
A decomposition of a graph is a set of subgraphs whose edges partition those of $G$. The 3-decomposition conjecture posed by Hoffmann-Ostenhof in 2011 states that every connected cubic graph can be decomposed into a spanning tree, a 2-regular subgraph, and a matching. It has been settled for special classes of graphs, one of the first results being for Hamiltonian graphs. In the past two years several new results have been obtained, adding the classes of plane, claw-free, and 3-connected tree-width 3 graphs to the list. In this paper, we regard a natural extension of Hamiltonian graphs: removi…
Mock threshold graphs are a simple generalization of threshold graphs that, like threshold graphs, are perfect graphs. Our main theorem is a characterization of mock threshold graphs by forbidden induced subgraphs. Other theorems characterize mock threshold graphs that are claw-free and that are line graphs. We also discuss relations with chordality and well-quasi-ordering as well as algorithmic aspects.
In this paper, we investigate the ratio of the numbers of odd and even cycles in outerplanar graphs. We verify that the ratio generally diverges to infinity as the order of a graph diverges to infinity. We also give sharp estimations of the ratio for several classes of outerplanar graphs, and obtain a constant upper bound of the ratio for some of them. Furthermore, we consider similar problems in graphs with some pairs of forbidden subgraphs/minors, and propose a challenging problem concerning claw-free graphs.
We study Hamilton cycles and perfect matchings in a uniform attachment graph. In this random graph, vertices are added sequentially, and when a vertex $t$ is created, it makes $k$ independent and uniform choices from $\{1,\dots,t-1\}$ and attaches itself to these vertices. Improving the results of Frieze, Pérez-Giménez, Prałat and Reiniger (2019), we show that, with probability approaching 1 as $n$ tends to infinity, a uniform attachment graph on $n$ vertices has a perfect matching for $k \ge 5$ and a Hamilton cycle for $k\ge 13$. One of the ingredients in our proofs is the identification of a…

We show that for all simple graphs G other than the cycles C_3,C_4,C_5, and the claw K_1,3 there exists a K > 0 such that whenever k > K the k-th iterate of the line graph can be distinguished by at most two colors. Additionally we determine, for trees, when the distinguishing number of the line graph of T is greater than the distinguishing number of T.
