We study the geometry of positive cones of left-invariant total orders (left-order, for short) in finitely generated groups. We introduce the \textit{Hucha property} and the \texit{Prieto property} for left-orderable groups. The first one means that in any left-order the corresponding positive cone is not coarsely connected, and the second one that in any left-order the corresponding positive cone is coarsely connected. We show that all left-orderable free products have the Hucha property, and that the Hucha property is stable under certain free products with amalgamatation over Prieto subgroups. As an application we show that non-abelian limit groups in the sense of Z. Sela (e.g. free groups, fundamental group of hyperbolic surfaces, doubles of free groups and others) and non-abelian finitely generated subgroups of free $\mathbb{Q}$-groups in the sense of G. Baumslag have the Hucha property. In particular, this implies that these groups have empty BNS-invariant $Σ^1$ and that they don't have finitely generated positive cones.
We construct a finitely presented group with infinitely many non-homeomorphic asymptotic cones. We also show that the existence of cut points in asymptotic cones of finitely presented groups does, in general, depend on the choice of scaling constants and ultrafilters.
Let G be a connected semisimple Lie group with at least one absolutely simple factor S such that R-rank(S) is at least 2, and let $Γ$ be a uniform lattice in G. (a) If $CH$ holds, then $Γ$ has a unique asymptotic cone up to homeomorphism. (b) If $CH$ fails, then $Γ$ has $2^{2^ω}$ asymptotic cones up to homeomorphism.
We show that there exists no left order on the free product of two nontrivial, finitely generated, left-orderable groups such that the corresponding positive cone is represented by a regular language. Since there are orders on free groups of rank at least two with positive cone languages that are context-free (in fact, 1-counter languages), our result provides a bound on the language complexity of positive cones in free products that is the best possible within the Chomsky hierarchy. It also provides a strengthening of a result by Cristobal Rivas stating that the positive cone in a free produc…
We show that for any metric space $M$ satisfying certain natural conditions, there is a finitely generated group $G$, an ultrafilter $ω$, and an isometric embedding $ι$ of $M$ to the asymptotic cone ${\rm Cone}_ω(G)$ such that the induced homomorphism $ι^ \ast :π_1(M)\to π_1({\rm Cone}_ω(G))$ is injective. In particular, we prove that any countable group can be embedded into a fundamental group of an asymptotic cone of a finitely generated group.
We show how a recent result of Hrushovsky implies that if an asymptotic cone of a finitely generated group is locally compact, then the group is virtually nilpotent.
We prove the Morrison-Kawamata cone conjecture for klt Calabi-Yau pairs in dimension 2. That is, for a large class of rational surfaces as well as K3 surfaces and abelian surfaces, the action of the automorphism group of the surface on the convex cone of ample divisors has a rational polyhedral fundamental domain. More concretely: there many be infinitely many curves with negative self-intersection on the surface, but all such curves fall into finitely many orbits under the automorphism group of the surface. The proof uses the geometry of groups acting on hyperbolic space. We deduce a characte…
Gromov asked whether an asymptotic cone of a finitely generated group was always simply connected or had uncountable fundamental group. We prove that Gromov's dichotomy holds for asympotic cones with cut points, as well as, HNN extensions and amalgamated products where the associated subgroups are nicely embedded. We also show a slightly weaker dichotomy for multiple HNN extensions of free groups.
We propose a criterion for preserving the regularity of a formal language representation when passing from groups to subgroups. We use this criterion to show that the regularity of a positive cone language in a left-orderable group passes to its finite index subgroups, and to show that there exists no left order on a finitely generated acylindrically hyperbolic group such that the corresponding positive cone is represented by a quasi-geodesic regular language. We also answer one of Navas' questions by giving an example of an infinite family of groups which admit a positive cone that is generat…
We study the geometry of warped cones over free, minimal isometric group actions and related constructions of expander graphs. We prove a rigidity theorem for the coarse geometry of such warped cones: Namely, if a group has no abelian factors, then two such warped cones are quasi-isometric if and only if the actions are finite covers of conjugate actions. As a consequence, we produce continuous families of non-quasi-isometric expanders and superexpanders. The proof relies on the use of coarse topology for warped cones, such as a computation of their coarse fundamental groups.
We prove that Abels' group over an arbitrary nondiscrete locally compact field has a quadratic Dehn function. As applications, we exhibit connected Lie groups and polycyclic groups whose asymptotic cones have uncountable abelian fundamental group. We also obtain, from the case of finite characteristic, uncountably many non-quasi-isometric finitely generated solvable groups, as well as peculiar examples of fundamental groups of asymptotic cones.
We introduce a concept of tree-graded metric space and we use it to show quasi-isometry invariance of certain classes of relatively hyperbolic groups, to obtain a characterization of relatively hyperbolic groups in terms of their asymptotic cones, to find geometric properties of Cayley graphs of relatively hyperbolic groups, and to construct the first example of finitely generated group with a continuum of non-$π_1$-equivalent asymptotic cones. Note that by a result of Kramer, Shelah, Tent and Thomas, continuum is the maximal possible number of different asymptotic cones of a finitely generate…
The study of the set of limit roots associated to an infinite Coxeter group was initiated by Hohlweg, Labbé and Ripoll and further developed by Dyer, Hohlweg, Péaux and Ripoll. The Davis complex associated to a finitely generated Coxeter group $W$ is a piecewise Euclidean CAT(0) space on which $W$ acts properly, cocompactly by isometries. The one skeleton of the Davis complex can be identified with the Cayley graph of $W$. In this paper we define a natural map from the Davis complex into the normalised imaginary cone of a based root system.
Addressing a question of Gromov, we give a rate in Pansu's theorem about the convergence in Gromov-Hausdorff metric of a finitely generated nilpotent group equipped with a left-invariant word metric scaled by a factor 1/n towards its asymptotic cone. We show that due to the possible presence of abnormal geodesics in the asymptotic cone, this rate cannot be better than n^{1/2} for general non-abelian nilpotent groups. As a corollary we also get an error term of the form vol(B(n))=cn^d + O(n^{d-2/(3r)}) for the volume of Cayley balls of a nilpotent group with nilpotency class r. We also state a …
In the present paper we prove lemmata on strong contractibility in asymptotic cones and metric ultraproducts which we apply to both the case of finitely generated word norms and the case of conjugation invariant norms. We recover classically known contractibility results on free products and prove the contractibility of the asymptotic cone of the infinite symmetric group $\Sym_\infty$ equipped with a conjugation invariant norm. Furthermore, we give examples of contractible metric ultraproducts arising from subgroups of general linear groups. Additionally, we discuss algebraic properties of gro…
We prove that every countable left-ordered group embeds into a finitely generated left-ordered simple group. Moreover, if the first group has a computable left-order, then the simple group also has a computable left-order. We also obtain a Boone-Higman-Thompson type theorem for left-orderable groups with recursively enumerable positive cones. These embeddings are Frattini embeddings, and isometric whenever the initial group is finitely generated. Finally, we reprove Thompson's theorem on word problem preserving embeddings into finitely generated simple groups and observe that the embedding is …
The main goal of this paper is a detailed study of asymptotic cones of the mapping class groups. In particular, we prove that every asymptotic cone of a mapping class group has a bi-Lipschitz equivariant embedding into a product of real trees, sending limits of hierarchy paths onto geodesics, and with image a median subspace. One of the applications is that a group with Kazhdan's property (T) can have only finitely many pairwise non-conjugate homomorphisms into a mapping class group. We also give a new proof of the rank conjecture of Brock and Farb (previously proved by Behrstock and Minsky, a…
We prove that the subgroup zeta function and the normal zeta function of a finitely generated virtually nilpotent group are finite sums of Euler products of cone integrals over $\mathbb{Q}$ and we deduce from this that they have rational abscissa of convergence and some meromorphic continuation. We also define Mal'cev completions of a finitely generated virtually nilpotent group and we prove that the subgroup growth and the normal subgroup growth of the latter are invariants of its $\mathbb{Q}$-Mal'cev completion.
We study the connection between amenability, Følner conditions and the geometry of finitely generated semigroups. Using results of Klawe, we show that within an extremely broad class of semigroups (encompassing all groups, left cancellative semigroups, finite semigroups, compact topological semigroups, inverse semigroups, regular semigroups, commutative semigroups and semigroups with a left, right or two-sided zero element), left amenability coincides with the strong Følner condition. Within the same class, we show that a finitely generated semigroup of subexponential growth is left amenable i…
We call a finitely generated group lacunary hyperbolic if one of its asymptotic cones is an R-tree. We characterize lacunary hyperbolic groups as direct limits of Gromov hyperbolic groups satisfying certain restrictions on the hyperbolicity constants and injectivity radii. Using central extensions of lacunary hyperbolic groups, we solve a problem of Gromov by constructing a group whose asymptotic cone C has countable but non-trivial fundamental group (in fact C is homeomorphic to the direct product of a tree and a circle, so π_1(C)=Z). We show that the class of lacunary hyperbolic groups conta…
For every finitely generated free group we construct an explicit left order extending the lexicographic order on the free monoid generated by the positive letters. The order is defined by a left, free action on the orbit of 0 of a free group of piecewise linear homeomorphisms of the line. The membership in the positive cone is decidable in linear time in the length of the input word. The positive cone forms a context-free language closed under word reversal.
We study languages of geodesics in lamplighter groups and Thompson's group F. We show that the lamplighter groups $L_n$ have infinitely many cone types, have no regular geodesic languages, and have 1-counter, context-free and counter geodesic languages with respect to certain generating sets. We show that the full language of geodesics with respect to one generating set for the lamplighter group is not counter but is context-free, while with respect to another generating set the full language of geodesics is counter and context-free. In Thompson's group F with respect to the standard finite ge…
A group is metabelian if its commutator subgroup is abelian. For finitely generated metabelian groups, classical commutative algebra, algebraic geometry and geometric group theory, especially the latter two subjects, can be brought to bear on their study. The object of this paper is to describe some of the new ideas and open problems that arise.
