Zn1-xRxO (R = Li, Mg, Cr, Mn, Fe and Cd) were obtained by using co-precipitation synthesis technique with constant weight percent of 3% from R ions. The phase composition, crystal structure, morphology, Density Functional Theory (DFT), and, magnetic properties were examined to comprehend the influence of Zn2+ partial substitution with R ions. X-ray diffraction shows that the ZnO lattice parameters were slightly affected by R doping and the doped sample crystallinity is enhanced. Our results show that introducing Cr, Mn and Fe along with Mg into ZnO induces a clear magnetic moment without any apparent distortion in the structural morphology. The spatial configuration of dopant atoms is determined from first-principles calculations, giving a better understanding of the position of the dopant atom responsible for the magnetism. The magnetic moments obtained from our calculations are 3.67, 5.0, and 4.33 μB per dopant atom for Cr, Mn, and Fe, respectively, which agree with the experimental values. While Cr and Fe tend to form clusters, Mn has more propensity to remain evenly distributed within the system, avoiding cluster-derived magnetism.
Owing to fully occupied orbitals, noble gases are considered to be chemically inert and to have limited effect on materials properties under standard conditions. However, using first-principles calculations, we demonstrate herein that the insertion of noble gas (i.e., He, Ne, or Ar) in ZnO results in local destabilization of electron density of the material driven by minimization of an unfavorable overlap of atomic orbitals of the noble gas and its surrounding atoms. Specifically, the noble gas defect (interstitial or substitutional) in ZnO pushes the electron density of its surrounding atoms …
In this paper, a correlation between structural and magnetic properties of Fe implanted ZnO is presented. High fluence Fe^+ implantation into ZnO leads to the formation of superparamagnetic alpha-Fe nanoparticles. High vacuum annealing at 823 K results in the growth of alpha-Fe particles, but the annealing at 1073 K oxidized the majority of the Fe nanoparticles. After a long term annealing at 1073 K, crystallographically oriented ZnFe2O4 nanoparticles were formed inside ZnO with the orientation relationship of ZnFe2O4(111)[110]//ZnO(0001)[1120]. These ZnFe2O4 nanoparticles show a hysteretic be…
Density functional theory (DFT) calculations are carried out to study the structure and electronic structure of amorphous zinc oxide (a-ZnO). The models were prepared by the "melt-quench" method. The models are chemically ordered with some coordination defects. The effect of trivalent dopants in the structure and electronic properties of a-ZnO is investigated. Models of a-X_0.375 Z_0.625 O (X=Al, Ga and In) were also prepared by the "melt- quench" method. The trivalent dopants reduce the four-fold Zn and O, thereby introducing some coordination defects in the network. The dopants prefer to bon…
Surprisingly low solubility and toxicity of Fe-doped ZnO nanoparticles is elucidated on the basis of first-principles calculations. Various ZnO surfaces that could be present in nanoparticles are subject to substitutional Fe doping. We show that Fe stabilizes polar instable surfaces, while non-polar surfaces, namely (1010) and (1120), remain intact. Polar surfaces can be stabilized indirectly through Fe2+-Fe3+ pair assisted charge transfer, what reduces surface polarity and therefore, the solubility in polar solvents.
We report the structural and magnetic properties of ZnO single crystals implanted at 623 K with up to 10 at. % of Ni. As revealed by X-ray diffraction, crystalline fcc-Ni nanoparticles were formed inside ZnO. The magnetic behavior (magnetization with field reversal and with different temperature protocol) of all samples is well explained by a magnetic Ni-nanoparticle system. Although the formation of Ni:ZnO based diluted magnetic semiconductor cannot be ruled out, the major contribution to the magnetic properties stems from crystalline nanoparticles synthesized under these implantation conditi…
In this work, ZnO nanowire arrays decorated with titanium nitride (TiN) nanoparticles as surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrates is demonstrated. ZnO nanowires were grown by hydrothermal synthesis while ~100 nm TiN nanoparticles were obtained by grinding commercial powders for several hours. They were then decorated on the ZnO nanowire arrays using acetone as the medium. Scanning electron microscopy confirmed the presence of TiN nanoparticles on the ZnO nanowires. TiN nanoparticles exhibited localized surface plasmon resonances at 430, 520 and 600 nm. SERS experiments using Nile Bl…
We fabricate and compare nanocomposite thin-film ZnO chemoresistive acetone sensors with gold or palladium nanoparticles on the surface, at low operating temperatures. The sensors are fabricated by pulsed laser deposition and operate in the temperature range 159-200oC. The ZnO films are polycrystalline, crystallizing mainly at the (002) and (101) orientations of the hexagonal phase. The nanocomposite ZnO:Au and ZnO:Pd sensors have a lower detection limit and show a response enhancement factor between 2-7, compared with pure ZnO sensors. The ZnO:Pd sensor performs better than the ZnO:Au sensor.…
ZnO nanoparticles (NP) of size less than around 20 nm inside a chamber exhibits complete reduction in their visible photoluminescence (PL) intensity when partial pressure of oxygen in the surrounding gaseous environment is decreased by evacuation. However the visible PL from ZnO nanoparticles are insensitive to the gases like N2, He and Ar. The rate of change of PL intensity with pressure (or the sensitivity) is inversely proportional to the ambient air pressure. Sensitivity increases when surface to volume ratio increases for lower particle size. The charged oxygen vacancies are attributed as…
Silver-doped ZnO nanoparticles were successfully fabricated at $400\,^{\circ}\mathrm{C}$ via a simple and rapid method based on short time solid state milling and calcination of precursor powders. The effect of Ag dilute doping on the structural, optical, and photocatalytic properties of ZnO nanoparticles was investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), UV-vis spectrophotometer and photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy.~X-ray analysis revealed that Ag doped ZnO solidified in hexagonal wurtzite structure.~ The intensity of deep level emission was reduced with increasing silver doping in PL measuremen…
We report a novel effect that the visible photoluminescence (in the blue-green band) from ZnO anoparticles can be controlled by changing the ionic or polar nature of the medium in which the nanoparticles are dispersed. We find that the presence of sufficient amount of electrolytes can even quench the emission. We propose an explanation based on surface charge of the ZnO nanoparticles which control the band bending in the depletion layer at the surface of the anoparticles. The band bending in turn, decides the predominant nature of the visible emission. The explanation is validated by establish…
Reversible control of the photoluminescence of ZnO occurring in the visible range, has been achieved by application of a few volts (< 5V) to a device consisting of nanostructured ZnO film sandwiched between Indium Tin Oxide electrode and polyethylene oxide-lithium perchlorate, a solid polymer electrolyte. The photoluminescence intensity shows nearly 100% modulation with a response time less than 30 seconds, when the bias is applied at the electrolyte-electrode. A model is proposed for the observed effect that is based on defect states of ZnO and the band bending at the ZnO-electrolyte interfac…
Dopants of transition metal ions in II-VI semiconductors exhibit native 2+ valency. Despite this, 3+ or mixed 3+/2+ valency of iron ions in ZnO was reported previously. Several contradictory mechanisms have been put forward for explanation of this fact so far. Here, we analyze Fe valency in ZnO by complementary theoretical and experimental studies. Our calculations within the generalized gradient approximation (GGA+U) indicate that the Fe ion is a relatively shallow donor. Its stable charge state is Fe2+ in ideal ZnO, however, the high energy of the (+/0) transition level enhances the compensa…
In this letter, the authors present a study of the energetics and magnetic interactions in Fe doped ZnO clusters by ab-initio density functional calculations. The results indicate that defects under suitable conditions can induce ferromagnetic interactions between the dopant Fe atoms whereas antiferromagnetic coupling dominates in a neutral defect-free cluster. The calculations also reveal an unusual ionic state of the dopant Fe atom residing at the surface of the cluster, a feature that is important to render the cluster ferromagnetic.
In this work, we report optical and photovoltaic properties of ZnO based solid polymeric photoelectrochemical (PEC) cell. In this device construction, film of ZnO nanoparticle (NP) has been sandwiched between ITO and LiClO4-PEO solid electrolyte. ZnO NP has been used as photo-anode and the electrolyte LiClO4 has been dissolved in a solid solution polyethylene oxide that makes the device lightweight and portable. The charge transfer is performed by Li+ and ClO4- ions which serve the purpose of a redox couple in a conventional dye sensitize solar cell (DSSC). Short Circuit Current (JSC) shows ma…
The attachment of semiconducting nanoparticles to carbon nanotubes is one of the most challenging subjects in nanotechnology. Successful high coverage attachment and control over the charge transfer mechanism and photo-current generation opens a wide field of new applications such as highly effective solar cells and fibre-enhanced polymers. In this work we study the charge transfer in individual double-wall carbon nanotubes highly covered with uniform ZnO nanoparticles. The synthetic colloidal procedure was chosen to avoid long-chained ligands at the nanoparticle-nanotube interface. The result…
ZnO is co-doped with Na+ and Si4+ in the ratio 2:1. The ratio was intentionally chosen so that net valence state of dopant theoretically matches that of host. This is to avoid dependence in the amount of oxygen vacancies/interstitials arising out of cationic valence state of the dopant. With such a combination, modifications in structural and optical properties do not depend on excess or deficit of the dopant charge state. For lower doping, Na+ ions behave as interstitial sites which enhance strain, lattice disorder and thereby creating defects. Formation of interstitial defects leads to reduc…
The $s,p-d$ exchange coupling between the spins of band carriers and of transition metal (TM) dopants ranging from Ti to Cu in ZnO is studied within the density functional theory. The $+U$ corrections are included to reproduce the experimental ZnO band gap and the dopant levels. The $p-d$ coupling reveals unexpectedly complex features. In particular, (i) the $p-d$ coupling constants $N_0β$ vary about 10 times when going from V to Cu, (ii) not only the value but also the sign of $N_0β$ depends on the charge state of the dopant, (iii) the $p-d$ coupling with the heavy holes and the light holes i…
Optical properties of ZnO nanoparticles prepared from a simple chemical method using sodium zincate bath show strong white light emission. X-ray absorption fine structure studies reveal a completely different local environment around Zn in these ZnO nanoparticles. The observed luminescence properties and local structural changes have been explained on the basis of a linkage between Zn and OH- ions in the surface layers of ZnO nanoparticles.
The effect of hydrogenation on magnetic properties of Zn0.85Co0.05Li0.10O nanoparticles is presented. It was found that the sample hydrided at room temperature (RT) showed weak ferromagnetism (FM) while that hydrided at 400oC showed robust ferromagnetism at room temperature. In both cases reheating the sample at 400oC in air converts it back into paramagnetic state (P) completely. The characterization of samples by X-ray and electron diffraction (ED) showed that room temperature ferromagnetism observed in the samples hydrogenated at RT is intrinsic in nature whereas that observed in the sample…
Effect of ambient gases on photoluminescence (PL) and electrical conductivity of films prepared using ZnO nanoparticles (NPs) have been investigated. It is observed that NPs of size below 20 nm kept inside a chamber exhibit complete reduction in their visible PL when oxygen partial pressure of the surrounding gases is decreased by evacuation. However the visible PL from ZnO NPs is insensitive to other major gases present in the ambient air. The rate of change of PL intensity with pressure is inversely proportional to the ambient air pressure and increases when particle size decreases due to th…
The equation for the size strain plot methods reported by A. Khorsand Zak et al. (Solid State Sci. 13 (2011), 251) does not follow the dimensional homogeneity, consequently leading to an inaccurate estimation of the crystallite size and strain values of the materials under investigation and the dimensions of the obtained parameters. We also perceived an error in the values of crystallite size and strain reported by the authors using the size-strain plot method. We will discuss the importance of dimensional analysis and its repercussions on the estimated values and the units of parameters.
We simulated and experimentally investigated the sputter yield of ZnO and GaAs nanowires, which were implanted with energetic Mn ions at room temperature. The resulting thinning of the nanowires and the dopant concentration with increasing Mn ion fluency were measured by accurate scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and nano-X-Ray Fluorescence (nanoXRF) quantification, respectively. We observed a clear enhanced sputter yield for the irradiated nanowires compared to bulk, which is also corroborated by iradina simulations. These show a maximum if the ion range matches the nanowire diameter. As a c…
Raman spectroscopic investigations are carried out on ZnO nanoparticles for various photon energies. Intensities of E1-LO and E2 modes exhibit large changes as the excitation energy varied from 2.41 to 3.815 eV, signifying substantially large contribution of Frohlich interaction to the Raman polarizability as compared to deformation potential close to the resonance. Relative strength of these two mechanisms is estimated for the first time in nanoparticles and compared with those in the bulk.
Room temperature single photon emitters are very important resources for photonics and emerging quantum technologies. In this work we study single photon emission from defect centers in 20 nm zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles. The emitters exhibit bright broadband fluorescence in the red spectral range centered at 640 nm with polarized excitation and emission. The studied emitters showed continuous blinking, however, bleaching can be suppressed using a polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) coating. Furthermore, hydrogen termination increased the density of single photon emitters. Our results will contri…
ZnO nanoparticles with Wurtzite structure were prepared by chemical methods at low temperature in aqueous solution. Nanoparticles are in the range from about 10 to 30 nm. Ferromagnetic properties were observed from 2 K to room temperature and above. Magnetization vs temperature, M(T) and isothermal measurements M(H) were determined. The coercive field clearly shows ferromagnetism above room temperature. The chemical synthesis, structural defects in the bulk related to oxygen vacancies are the main factors for the observed magnetic behavior. PACS numbers: 61.46.Hk Nanocrystals, 75.50.Pp Magneti…
Flower-like nanostructures formed by ZnO nanorods were synthesized and deposited on seeded silicon and glass substrates by a hexamethylenetetramine (HMTA) - assisted hydrothermal method at low temperature (90 oC) with methenamine ((CH3)6N4), as surfactant and catalyst. The substrates were seeded with ZnO nanoparticles. The structure and morphology of the nanostructures were studied by means of x-ray diffraction (XRD), high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) techniques. Influence of the seed nanoparticle on the formation of the flower-lik…
In this letter, we study how coupling between AuNPs and ZnO thin films affects their emission properties. The emission intensity of ZnO thin films changes when Al2O3 spacer layer of different thickness are included in ZnO/Au films, consistent with theoretical predictions. The emission properties are also controlled using the polarization of the excitation source. Emission properties depended on the polarization of the excitation source because of the surface plasmon resonance of AuNPs. The photoluminescence anisotropy of these systems shows that enhanced photoluminescence can be achieved throu…
The origin of room temperature (RT) ferromagneticlike behavior in ZnO-based diluted magnetic semiconductors is still an unclear topic. The present work concentrates on the appearance of RT magnetic moments in just mixed ZnO/Co3O4 mixtures without thermal treatment. In this study, it is shown that the magnetism seems to be related to surface reduction of the Co3O4 nanoparticles, in which, an antiferromagnetic Co3O4 nanoparticle (core) is surrounded by a CoO-like shell. This singular superficial magnetism has also been found in other mixtures with semiconductors such as TiO2 and insulators such …
This work reports the successful solid state synthesis of ZnO/NiFe2O4 nanocomposite by calcinations of both green synthesized ZnO nanorods and NiFe2O4 prismatic nanorods at high temperature (850 °C) for ten hours. These nanomaterials were characterized for structural, functional groups and morphological studies using XRD, FTIR and SEM respectively. The photocatalytic activity of the catalysts was assessed through photodegradation of methylene blue (MB) dye. The photocatalytic studies reveal that the ZnO/NiFe2O4 nanocomposite exhibits high degradation efficiency under UV light. The study shows …
Proton exchange membrane fuel cells hold promise as energy conversion devices for hydrogen-based power generation and storage. However, the slow kinetics of the oxygen reduction at the cathode imposes the need for highly active catalysts, typically Pt or Pt-based, with a large available area. The scarcity of Pt increases deployment and operational cost, driving the development of novel highly-active material systems. As an alternative, Rh-doped PtNi nanoparticle has been suggested as promising oxygen reduction catalyst, but the 3D distributions of constituent elements in the nanoparticles have…
We present a comprehensive study of the energetics and magnetic properties of ZnO clusters doped with 3d transition metals (TM) using ab initio density functional calculations in the framework of generalized gradient approximation + Hubbard U (GGA+U) method. Our results within GGA+U for all 3d dopants except Ti indicate that antiferromagnetic interaction dominates in a neutral, defect-free cluster. Formation energies are calculated to identify the stable defects in the ZnO cluster. We have analyzed in details the role of these defects to stabilize ferromagnetism when the cluster is doped with …
The study particularly focuses on the effect of the Cr co-doping on the structural, optical and magnetic properties of Zn0.99Fe0.01O. Zn0.99-xFe0.01CrxO (x =0, 0.01, 0.03 and 0.05) nanoparticles. Powder x-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis confirms all the samples have hexagonal wurtzite structures. The average crystallite size (D) and microstrain of the samples were calculated using the Williamson-Hall relation and D was found to be 13 +- 1 nm for Zn0.99Fe0.01O. In Cr co-doped samples, D increase slightly with Cr content and are given by 9 +- 1, 10 +- 1, and 11 +- 1 nm for the samples with x = 0.…
We report persistently increased conduction in ZnO nanowires irradiated by ion beam with various ion energies and species. This effect is shown to be related to the already known persistent photo conduction in ZnO and dubbed persistent ion beam induced conduction. Both effects show similar excitation efficiency, decay rates, and chemical sensitivity. Persistent ion beam induced conduction will potentially allow countable (i.e., single dopant) implantation in ZnO nanostructures and other materials showing persistent photo conduction.
We report here on the magnetic properties of ZnO:Mn and ZnO:Co doped nanoparticles. We have found that the ferromagnetism of ZnO:Mn can be switched on and off by consecutive low-temperature annealings in O2 and N2 respectively, while the opposite phenomenology was observed for ZnO:Co. These results suggest that different defects (presumably n-type for ZnO:Co and p-type for ZnO:Mn) are required to induce a ferromagnetic coupling in each case. We will argue that ferromagnetism is likely to be restricted to a very thin, nanometric layer, at the grain surface. These findings reveal and give insigh…
Colloidal zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles are frequently used in the field of organic photovoltaics for the realization of solution-producible, electron-selective interfacial layers. Despite of the widespread use, there is a lack of detailed investigations regarding the impact of structural properties of the particles on the device performance. In this work, ZnO nanoparticles with varying surface-area-to-volume ratio were synthesized and implemented into polymer-fullerene bulk heterojunction solar cells with a gas-permeable top electrode. By comparing the electrical characteristics before and a…
Electronic structure of the transition metal (TM) dopants in ZnO is calculated by first principles approach. Analysis of the results is focused on the properties determined by the intrashell Coulomb coupling. The role of both direct and exchange interaction channel is analyzed. The coupling is manifested in the strong charge state dependence of the TM gap levels, which leads to the metastability of photoexcited Mn, and determines the accessible equilibrium charge states of TM ions. The varying magnitude of the exchange coupling is reflected in the dependence of the spin splitting energy on the…

The structural and magnetic properties of ZnFe2O4 nanoparticles embedded in a non-magnetic ZnO matrix are presented. X-ray diffractograms and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) images showed that the resulting samples are composed of crystalline ferrite nanoparticles with average crystallite size <D> = 23.4(0.9) nm, uniformly dispersed within the ZnO matrix. Magnetization data indicated a superparamagnetic-like behavior from room temperature down to T_{M} ~ 20 K, where a transition to a frozen state is observed. The M(H) curves displayed nearly zero coercive field down to TM, where a sharp…
The focus of this article is based on the aqueous dispersed state properties of inorganic ZnO nanoparticles (average size lessthan or equal to 4 nm), their surface modification and bio-functionalization with folic acid at physiological pH ~ 7.5, suitable for bio-imaging and targeted therapeutic application. While TEM studies of the ZnO nano-crystallites have been performed to estimate their size and morphology in dry state, the band gap properties of the freshly prepared samples, the hydrodynamic size in aqueous solution phase and the wide fluorescence range in visible region have been investi…
Several experimental studies have referred to the grain boundary (GB) defect as the origin of the ferromagnetism in ZnO. However, the mechanism of this hypothesis has never been confirmed. Present study investigates the atomic structure and the effect of point defects in a ZnO GB using the GGA+U approximation. The relaxed GB possesses large periodicity and channels with 8 and 10 numbered atoms having 4 and 3 fold coordination. Unlike O vacancy (VO), Zn vacancy (VZn) is preferentially aggregated at the GB, relative to the bulk-like region, indicating the possibility of obtaining p-type conducti…
In this paper we have tried to understand the precise nature of magnetism in ZnO nanoparticles. Cooling field dependence of magnetic hysteresis and coercive field was observed for high temperature annealed sample indicating cooperative magnetic correlation and ordering within the agglomerated nanograins. The increasing induced internal magnetic field along the direction of external field for the high temperature annealed sample has been fitted with the modified Weiss-Brillouin model indicating emergence of long range intergrain interaction among the superparamagnetic grains. We propose a simpl…
Uniaxial hot pressing has been used to obtain ceramics based on zinc oxide, and their optical, x-ray-structure, luminescence, and scintillation characteristics have been studied. It is shown that, by changing the concentration of the dopant (Ga) and the codopant (N), it is possible to change the intensities of the edge band (397.5 nm) and the intraband luminescence (510 nm) of the ZnO luminescence, as well as their ratio. Undoped ZnO ceramic has good transparency in the visible region and fairly high luminous yield: 9050 photons per MeV. Ceramic ZnO:Ga possesses intense edge luminescence with …
In this study, the effect of Sr- and Ni-doping on microstructural, morphological and sensing properties of ZnO nanorods has been investigated. Nanorods with different Sr and Ni loadings were prepared using a simple wet chemical method and characterized by means of scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and photoluminescence (PL) analysis. XRD data confirmed that Sr- and Ni-doped samples maintainsthe wurtzite hexagonal structure of pure ZnO. However, unlikes Sr, Ni doping modifies the nanorod morphology, increases the surface area (SA) and decreases the ratio of IUV/Igreen …
The magnetic transition-metal (TM) @ oxide nanoparticles have been of great interest due to their wide range of applications, from medical sensors in magnetic resonance imaging to photo-catalysis. Although several studies on small clusters of TM@oxide have been reported, the understanding of the physical electronic properties of TMn@(ZnO)42 is far from sufficient. In this work, the electronic, magnetic and optical properties of TMn@(ZnO)42 (TM = Fe, Co and Ni) hetero-nanostructure are investigated using the density functional theory (DFT). It has been found that the core-shell nanostructure Fe…
Functionalization of photocatalytic metal oxide nanoparticles of TiO2, ZnO, WO3 and CuO with amine-terminated (oleylamine) and thiol-terminated (1-dodecanethiol) alkyl chained ligands was studied under ambient conditions. A high selectivity was observed in the binding specificity of a ligand towards nanoparticles of these different oxides. It was observed that oleylamine binds stably to only TiO2 and WO3, while 1-dodecanethiol binds stably only to ZnO and CuO. Similarly, polar to non-polar solvent phase transfer of TiO2 and WO3 nanoparticles could be achieved by using oleylamine, but not by 1-…
We investigated the optical properties of epitaxial \textit{n}- and \textit{p}-type ZnO films grown on lattice-matched ScAlMgO$_4$ substrates. Chemical doping yielded a severe inhomogeneity in a statistical distribution of involved charged impurities. Two approaches are adopted to treat the inhomogeneity effects; Monte Carlo simulation technique for the \textit{n}-doped films, and the fluctuation theory for the \textit{p}-ZnO. The broadening of PL band of \textit{n}-ZnO was significantly larger than predicted by theoretical results in which the linewidths of each individual emissions have been…
The observed correlation of oxygen vacancies and room temperature ferromagnetic ordering in Co doped ZnO1-o nanoparticles reported earlier (Naeem et al Nanotechnology 17, 2675-2680) has been further explored by transport and optical measurements. In these particles room temperature ferromagnetic ordering had been observed to occur only after annealing in forming gas. In the current work the optical properties have been studied by diffuse reflection spectroscopy in the UV-Vis region and the band gap of the Co doped compositions has been found to decrease with Co addition. Reflections minima are…
The magnetic properties of Mn-doped ZnO semi-conductor have been investigated using the Monte Carlo method within the Ising model. The temperature dependences of the spontaneous magnetization, specific heat and magnetic susceptibility have been constructed for different concentrations of magnetic dopant Mn and different carrier concentrations. The exact values of Mn concentration and carrier concentration at which high temperature transition occurs are determined. An alternative for the explanation of some controversies concerning the existence and the nature of magnetism in Mn diluted in ZnO …
We report on the synthesis of high-quality Co-doped ZnO thin films using the pulsed laser deposition technique on (0001)-Al$_2$O$_3$ substrates performed in an oxidizing atmosphere, using Zn and Co metallic targets. We firstly optimized the growth of ZnO in order to obtain the less strained film. Highly crystallized Co:ZnO thin films are obtained by an alternative deposition from Zn and Co metal targets. This procedure allows an homogenous repartition of the Co in the ZnO wurzite structure which is confirmed by the linear dependance of the out-of-plane lattice parameter as a function of the Co…
The composites of strontium-doped lanthanum manganite (LSMO) with zinc oxide (ZnO) are candidate materials for energy harvesting by virtue of their magnetic and piezoelectric characteristics. They could be used to harvest energy from stray sources, such as the vibrations and electromagnetic noise from transformers and compressors within electrical grid power stations to power small diagnostic sensors, among other applications. The LSMO/ZnO nanocomposites were made by: (i) milling the two bulk powders and, (ii) a wet chemical process which resulted in core-shell structures. The electrical, piez…
The role of Cr incorporation into the ZnO were probed through investigations into the structural, optical and magnetic properties. Zn1-xCrxO with x = 0, 0.01, 0.03 and 0.05, nanoparticles were prepared by solution combustion method. Powder x-ray diffraction (XRD) results reveal, all the synthesized samples are in single hexagonal wurtzite crystal structures, indicating that Cr3+ ions substitute the Zn2+ ions without altering the structure. The crystallite size and microstrain were calculated using the Willamson-Hall method and found to be 36 +- 2 nm for ZnO and it reduced with the increase of …
